It’s sweater weather! Now that the temperatures are dropping in my part of the world, I’ve got sweaters on my body and on the brain! Fall is a great time to cozy up with some yarn and make yourself or someone you love a beautiful handmade cardigan! I love the longer cardigans that can be thrown over a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and you’ve got an instantly classy look that keeps you warm and cozy. I’ve rounded up some great cardigan patterns for you to consider making this season

The Uptown Cardigan from All About Ami is probably one of my favourites; this was my late summer/early fall cardigan project. It’s a super simple knit and if there was a pattern rating system, I would put this one in the category of “Easy to knit while watching Netflix.” It’s lovely working with the delicate Coboo yarn from Lion Brand. It’s a worsted weight yarn that is sooooooo soft and has a lovely drape. It’s totally worth ordering the kit from Lion Brand, especially if you can get a good 40% off kits deal that Lion Brand is offering right now with the code 40KITS!

Stephanie also recently created this simple Rosewood Cardigan Crochet Pattern, also made with Coboo yarn. It’s similarly styled to the knit version, but for crocheters! This is also offered as a kit from Lion Brand and with 40% off right now, it’s a great time to pick it up!

This chunky cable-knit Braid Cardigan looks like it would work up really quickly with the chunky yarn and mostly garter stitch. And how cozy does it look? I love the cable braid detail.

Do you love the seed stitch? I love the look of it and as a continental knitter, switching between knitting and purling is pretty quick for me. The Autumn Sweater is another easy-level knitting pattern, worked up with chunky yarn, so it would come together quickly. It looks so warm!

Chantal from Knitatude has released this lovely cable knit chunky sweater as well. The Cable Crush Coat is knit with super bulky We Art Knitters The Wool (use my code: MGMKTKWSM to get $12 off!).

The Nina Cardigan is a crochet pattern for a long oversized cardigan with pockets. Pockets! We all love pockets! So you can make yourself a beautiful long cardigan whether you knit or crochet! This pattern is crocheted top-down, which is an excellent construction to work with for a sweater, so there are no surprises about how long it is because you can try it on as you go!

The Telavi Crocheted Cardigan Pattern has a lovely open lace stitch pattern, making a beautiful addition to your wardrobe, blending light and airy with soft and cozy.

So, are you ready for sweater weather? Which of these gorgeous patterns are you hoping to work up this season? Grab a pattern today or pin it for later!

DIY Wall Hangings

We redecorated our sitting room this year. It started with fixing the ceiling, which had a hole in it from someone sticking their foot through it when we were renovating the bathroom upstairs. Isn’t it fascinating how one project can lead to the next one? Haha. Well, after living with a hole in our ceiling for an embarrassingly long time, we finally got to fixing it. Nothing is easy in this old house because there’s a layer of drywall over the original lath and plaster, so it’s always a really big mess. Additionally, nothing is straight, so that’s another adventure.

However, our ceiling went from this

to this

in a day and a half with three of us working on it (and two of us are not very experienced and one of us is over 70). Seriously, if you need to re-do your ceiling, this is definitely something to consider. (Here’s a link to a DIY blog that has more information.) So much time and back-breaking work saved on mudding and taping and sanding, not to mention how much easier cleanup was!

Since all the furniture was already out of the room and it’d been nearly 9 years since we’d painted that room, I decided I may as well paint the room, too. I went with a light neutral grey, but it took us a couple tries to get just the right colour. I put down 2 coats of primer because we had it and a wee little bit of the red was peeking through after the first coat. Primer is like 1/2 the price of paint, so you may as well use that to get full coverage. The first colour we chose ended up looking too cool in the room, so we went back to the store and had the second can of paint we had bought (that thankfully we didn’t need to open) and had them re-tint it to a warmer grey. It’s amazing how our eyes can trick us. As I was painting the second colour, I asked Mr Evangelist’s opinion and he said, “It looks brown” (he did not want brown). And to be fair, it looked much warmer than the first colour. But after the first wall was painted, I knew it was going to be ok. He was out at the time and I texted him, “You are going to be shocked at how not-brown this looks.”

So, now the room is grey. Here’s a photo of the wall and the finished mantle (another project I finished for this room this summer). It’s really hard to get a good picture of the colour of the room; as you can see in this photo, the light really affects how it looks. Anyway, I like it, it’s very neutral, it’s lighter in there, and we’ve added some pops of colour. While I’m still thinking about the love seat, I’ve also started thinking about the walls. And right now, wall hangings are pretty fun and trendy and I think it might just be the right thing for this room. Check out some of these patterns and let me know what you think I should put in the room.

I could go simple and trendy with this diagonal fringe The Les Cayes Bobble Wall Hanging. It’s an easy/intermediate crochet pattern, so if you’re new to crochet, it would be a great project to try out your new skills!

I’m not sure this round crocheted wall hanging pattern with flowers is going to fit with the rest of the decor in the room, but I still think this one is really fun and it might be nice in a bedroom or hallway… Definitely something to keep in mind.

The Eleanor Wall Hanging crochet pattern can make 4 different styles of wall hangings, which makes this pattern super versatile. I love how it has a narrow and mini version so you could basically make a wall hanging for any little space in your house!

This one caught my eye because it has that beautiful mustard yellow in it. It really just got me thinking that maybe I could come up with my own simple design in the bobble stitch similar to this That’s Amore Wall Hanging pattern, which would look super sweet hanging in a nursery.

Now, macrame seems to have made a bit of a comeback. For me, this is definitely a throwback to my 1980’s Girl Guide days and I don’t think I’ve done macrame ever since. I did, however, have a solid year or two of complex friendship bracelet making, so I think it wouldn’t be so hard to pick up some macrame to make this macrame wall hanging pattern.

So far, I think this Adirondack Wall Hanging is leading the pack for me. The mustard colour is just perfect to go with the pops of colour we’ve put in the room and the natural colours and scene would fit in just perfectly with the rustic accents that we have in there. Time to go pick up some Thick & Quick!

Here’s another easy crochet pattern for a lovely boho wall hanging. I love the way this one is styled with the hats on the wall. It’s definitely a style I appreciate, but I think I would feel like a big phoney with a styling like this. Also, why is there a garlic braid hanging on this wall with the hats and tambourine? Who stores their things this way? Anyway, that pattern is pretty cool. Make that.

My friend Orsi is a beautiful crochet pattern designer and she has recently started designing tapestry crochet. This might be pushing my sensibilities a little bit, but I also enjoy a bit of whimsy in my house, something interesting that sparks some conversation. I think this Crochet Alpaca Wall Hanging definitely has the potential to be that point of interest in the room.

Are you considering a DIY wall hanging for one of your rooms? Which direction do you think I should head with my wall hanging? If you want to make one of these or think about it later, pick up one of these great patterns or pin it for later!

Bundle of Baby Booties

It may be due to the birthday of my youngest this month, but I’ve got babies on the brain. Let me be clear, I do not want any more babies on a permanent basis in my house, but I could definitely do with some baby snuggles. And baby booties just might be the most adorable of the handmade items for babies. So, if you have a baby due in your life that you would like to make for, check out this beautiful bundle of baby bootie patterns.

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

Check out these modern booties, the Taika Boot crochet pattern. These hiking boot-inspired booties would make a lovely pair of slippers for a little baby boy. They would make a great baby shower gift!

The Forrester Boot Crochet Bootie Pattern is another great hiking boot inspired bootie pattern. These are so great for little boys and even little mountain girls! So sweet! I wonder if I can make a pair large enough for me…

To keep your baby’s toes super toasty this winter, crochet up a pair of theses Summit Snowboots Intrepid Boots! I can’t get over how much these look like winter boots! What a treasure these would be!

Or you could put a pair of these Baby Work Boots on your little construction worker! I love the addition of the grommets for a very realistic look! So adorable!

For a more lady-like slipper, you could make a pair of these Sassy Straps Baby Shoes for the little ballerina baby! Careful with those buttons for the little ones, but super adorable for a little girl!

For a more sporty bootie, check out this Converse-inspired high top baby booties crochet pattern! I think these would be great for the baby boy or baby girl of a guy friend or relative. I think it’s easy for guys to feel a little left out of the whole baby thing. My husband preferred to dress our kids as little people, instead of as dolls, which took a little adjusting for me with our baby girl, but he always had good taste.

Not entirely forgetting the knitters, this adorable Baby booties knitting pattern is embellished with this cute flower design, I love the double-lined look to add extra cosiness and help keep those booties on baby’s feet! The last thing you want someone to do is to lose one of these adorable handmade slippers out of a stroller or car seat!

Here’s another pattern for the knitters, this Baby Moc-a-Soc knitting pattern also has a faux sock attached with a striking collar-like fold-over cuff, they’d be perfect for a Christmas family photoshoot!

I think this Chunky crocheted baby booties pattern with suede soles is a super cute pattern, perfect for a rustic look. They look super warm and appropriate for the entire chilly season but are also very suitable for Christmas. What parent wouldn’t love a pair of these adorable booties for their new baby?

I don’t really have a baby in my life to make one of these adorable pairs of booties for right now, but I’m sure you do, so share with me which pair you’re going to make or pin one of these images for later!

Chunky Crocheted Hats

Last week I shared a bunch of chunky knit hat patterns, but just so I don’t leave my hookers out of the loop, here’s a great group of winter beanies (toques for us Canadians) for you to start working on. And you have plenty of time before the busy gift-giving season to work up some of these gorgeous patterns!

Crochet in the Summertime

Did you know that some people think yarn crafts are only for winter and fall? Crazy, right?! I get it, though. If it’s sweltering outside, the last thing you might want to do is sit under a heavy afghan while you crochet (though, with office air conditioning, I still feel like I need a sweater at work!). Well, regardless of the temperature, there are plenty of patterns you can make in the relaxing summer months, that don’t have to make you sweat. Check out some of these great summer finds!

Instead of thinking garments like sweaters and toques, you can make decor, like this Fresh Fringe Banner by Candace from Wildflower Crochet Co. I met Candace at the knit night before Our Maker Life this year and she was working on one of these beauties. It comes together starting in triangle pieces, so you can travel with it while you make it. (She also has some finished items if you don’t crochet or don’t have time to make one!).

I’m a big fan of these gorgeous summer dresses, made from pieced together crocheted motifs. This crocheted dress would be perfect to make during the spring or summer and wear on the beach or at the resort during your winter getaway.

Sophie and Me Pdf Pattern Design also has a lovely summer dress crochet pattern that would definitely be worth your time! I love the beachy vibes of this Florence Granny Lace Dress/Top! The pattern is so versatile, you can make it either a top or a dress!

For another beachy pattern, check out this gorgeous Butterfly Crochet Crop Top! I love the sexy, strappy look of this cute top!

I can’t get enough of these bright and lively mandalas! This Spanish Mandala crochet pattern has instructions for making it into a round colourful cushion! I think the colours and design are just stunning and the different stitches look like a joy to make!

Summertime is also a great time to be making some amigurumi! This adorable Clyde the Monkey crochet pattern is so fun and if you want to get a head start on your holiday making, this little guy is perfect!

For a quick project you can use right away, this sweet Luna Headband crochet pattern is perfect for keeping your hair out of your face this summer!

The Steffy Crochet Headband Pattern is another quick stash-busting crochet pattern that is perfect to throw in your handbag to keep your hands busy while travelling. Lightweight and cheeky, this charming headband requires just 200 yards of yarn! Perfect summer project!

This bath mitt makes a great year-round project and a perfect little gift for anyone from your coworker to your mother in law! You can make them up with some lightweight cotton yarn in the summer and be all ready for the gift-giving season!

Summer is also a great time to make up a new handbag. This textured Macie Handbag Crochet Pattern is a summer bag pattern that’s just a little different!

There are so many great patterns you can make in the summer and for summer, you never have to stop making! Pick up a pattern today and make one of these gorgeous designs! Or pin it for later!

Our Maker Life

Today is Our Maker Life make meet up! I’m so pleased that I was able to get a ticket! It’s in Calgary, which is less than 3 hours’ drive for me, which is also great news! And it happens to be my and Mr Evangelist’s anniversary that day, so he is coming down with me and we are having a little getaway on the side! He’s such a good sport about my maker life… it’s OUR maker life! haha

Anyway, in honour of Our Maker Life, I wanted to highlight the OML 2019 presenters and their patterns! Check out these great designers and pick up one of their fabulous patterns. Support individual makers: their creativity and discipline in putting out incredible designs make this maker life so much more rich!

One of my all-time favourite designers is Stephanie from All About Ami. It was only in the last year or so that I learned she was from Edmonton, just like me! I’m so excited to meet her and hear her speak at OML! She designs beautiful knit and crochet patterns, from amigurumi to garments and bags, baskets, blankets & more! Her pdf patterns are really reasonably-priced, and you can even get them for free on her blog! The pattern above is her new Wildrose Backpack Crochet Pattern, which I’ve been meaning to make, but there’s just so much to make!!!

This Spring Bunnies Crochet pattern is an example of some of her great amigurumi patterns. These would make an adorable baby shower gift or a super sweet handmade Easter gift!

The Midtown Cardigan knitting pattern is a beautiful example of one of her wearable knit designs. I’m thinking I’m going to put this one on the docket to make this fall…

The other keynote speaker for OML 2019 is Chantal from Knitatude. She is from Calgary and I’m super excited to meet her and learn from her as well! She has a whole shop full of great knit garment patterns. I really like the Easy Eyelet Yoke Lite Sweater Pattern above. It looks like a lovely design to wear in warmer months and would layer well for the cooler seasons!

I also love this Cozy Celtic Raglan Cable Knit Sweater. Maybe it’s the gorgeous mustard coloured yarn that it’s made with, but I love the chunky yarn and the cozy jumbo cowl with the cropped body! Super cute!

Chantel’s knit dress patterns are absolutely to die for! This super cute Diamond Knit Dress pattern has made an appearance on my blog before, but it’s so cute, I can’t stop telling you about it!

As you might be able to imagine, many makers who are attending OML 2019 are making their own garments to wear. You can check them out on Instagram using the hashtag #dressmeupOML19. I have made myself one of these gorgeous Peaks Crochet Tank Tops in a sunshiney yellow! Bonus: this pattern is free from hookedbyanna.com!

I plan to be thoroughly enjoying OML today! Have a great maker day today! Pin this for later and to share with your friends! Oh, and happy anniversary, Mr Evangelist!

Canada Patterns

Happy Canada Day! I love this great country we live in and if you’re up for celebrating with some red and white, maple leaves, moose, beavers, sweaters, mountains, and the outdoors, then have I got some patterns for you!

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

Even in Canada right now, it’s too warm to wear this Oh Canada Maple Leaf Vintage Canadian Style sweater, but it’s not too early to get working on it for fall!

How about these funky Canada Maple Leaf Socks? Show your Canadian pride with these funky pair of socks at your next curling game!

If you’re not up for an involved project, this Canada Day, this Maple Leaf Dishcloth knitting pattern will work up quickly and add a festive feel to your kitchen while you clean up your Nanaimo Bar-making mess.

This Buffalo Plaid Moose Lovey for Baby pattern is the perfect thing to make if you’re a Canadian maker who loves some baby living out of the country… Or if you just love plaid and moose.

Or maybe you’d like to be a little more precise and make our country’s national animal, which is the beaver, so you could check out this Beaver Amigurumi Crochet Pattern by Planet June.

There’s also the ubiquitous Canadian toque (Canadian for winter beanie). Crochet yours using the waistcoat stitch, which looks remarkably like knitting.

What’s more Canadian than a Crocheted Plaid Hooded Woodland Moose Blanket? This would be fantastic for warming up at the cabin and sitting by the fire camping. What’s more Canadian than that?

Another classic Canada toque crochet pattern, also in waistcoat stitch. Big, bold CANADA printed on it. We’re usually pretty understated about our patriotism, but take us out of the country and we’re pretty proud to be Canadian. Wear this toque to keep yourself warm this winter (or today for the late night fireworks… it’s a little chilly here this Canada Day).

Or make yourself a handy crocheted Our Canada Gift Set of this tote bag and potholder. Very festive in the red and white!

Happy Canada Day! I hope you have a fantastic day and hopefully it is warm where you are and you make it out of the house to the fireworks tonight! Or pin it for later!
