Patterns to Make Your Own Plants and Hangers

I don’t know if your plant collection has been growing during this global panorama, but mine has! Plants are life! If you’re running out of places to put them, then I’ve got a great collection of knit and crochet planters for you to make so you can hang them on your wall or from your ceiling! If you have not had much luck with your plants, I even have a few patterns to knit or crochet your own plants, which require next to no care or green thumb at all!

This Air Plant Holder from La Leh Crochet is perfect for silk plants or air plants. I bet you could even get a small succulent in this little planter and hang it from a wall just about anywhere. This simple little pattern will work up quickly and use up a bit of scrap yarn. This kind of project is perfect to bring in the car with you (while someone else drives!) and make on the go!

This set of 5 Hanging Crochet Planter Patterns from Of Mars is a great way to get a variety of planters made for your home. How fun would a collection of these hanging at various heights in a window be? One of the things I like about this kind of planter is that you could totally reuse some jars for your plants and then crochet one of these beautiful planters for a super eco-friendly and wallet-friendly stylish hanging planter!

While I myself have not done macrame since my Girl Guide days in the ’80s (unless you count my friendship bracelet making days of the ’90s), the Luna Macrame Wall Plant Hanger Pattern from cotton dreamer is totally inspiring me to pick up some macrame cotton and tie some knots! I love it when you can hang plants on the wall and this wall hanging combines the beautiful macrame wall hanging design with the function of a plant hanger! Beauty! These simple and adorable Plant Pocket Crochet Pattern from Sass And Stitch Crochet are perfect for air plants or silk plants or other little bits of greenery that you can just tuck into a little pocket on the wall! The more I look at this functional little crochet pocket, the more I think I might even be able to use one of these in my kitchen for plastic lids! I love how crochet can mimic other crafts, like this Macrame-Inspired Boho Plant Hanger Crochet Pattern from Simply Made By Erin. The chevron pattern around the planter would make in blend in nicely with modern decor. I love these planters made in neutral colours like this, but anything that would work for your space is acceptable. What would you do? Bright colours or muted neutrals?

There have not been a lot of options for knitters this week. But if you’re a knitter and maybe you don’t have much of a green thumb, the Prickle of Cactus Knitting Pattern from Made bye M knits is just the thing for you. This set of three knitting patterns makes adorable knit amigurumi succulent plants for you to pot up in dollar store terra cotta planters and then completely forget about until it’s time to dust them every few month or so! While this Crochet Tiger Lily Flower Pattern from Pippa Patterns Crochet is definitely more involved and is not a one-evening project, the work will be worth it! This realistic looking crocheted tiger lily is stunning! I missed this pattern in my February bouquet round up, but I didn’t want to forget it altogether! The dreaded lily beetle has been ravaging gardens here in Edmonton and it’s a constant battle for gardeners to keep their lilies looking beautiful with this vicious pest around. You won’t have to fight the lily beetle if you just crochet yourself some lilies instead!

Or knit yourself a little succulent. The Succulent Plant Knitting Pattern from Knit the Stars is a quick and easy pattern that will use up some of your scraps and wouldn’t these darling little plants make perfect co-worker gifts or teacher gifts or housewarming gifts?

I have not had a lot of success with growing vines, but I love it when plant hangers have long draping foliage, so I’m definitely eyeing up this 5 Crochet Plant Vines Crochet Pattern from Keeleys Crochet. The beauty of these no-maintenance plants is that you can hang them up high in a place that is difficult to get to and you don’t have to worry about watering them.

I think the plant that has gained the most popularity over the last 16 months is the monstera. This unique plant is just stunning to look at and the beautiful fenestrations just make it such an inspiring plant. If you want some plant-inspired decor, but are not actually looking for plants, The Monstera Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern from Ozinshe is just the thing. The tapestry crochet monstera leaf is fun and would go with just about any home decor.

Play with Your Knit & Crochet!

I just love the versatility of yarn crafts! You can make garments and accessories, blankets, pillows, wall hanging, but also TOYS! There are patterns for dolls, animals and stuffed friends of all kinds, but did you know you can also make interactive toys? Check out this great collection of toys and games that you can make with knit and (mostly) crochet!

I bet you weren’t thinking of chess pieces! First off, finding this pattern was inspired by my middle child who has developed a keen interest in chess. He’s quite good! He and Mr. Evangelist played 3 games last weekend and the almost 14-year old won all three games! I was crocheting while they were playing and he couldn’t find a piece, so I searched and found this incredible Set of Chess Piece Amigurumi Patterns from Vliegende Hollander includes instructions in both English and German for making all six chess pieces. Made with worsted weight yarn, they work up to be 8″-15″ tall, so it would be quite large if you made a whole set of pieces! I would love to try to make these with a smaller sized yarn to see if I really could replace the lost piece!

We also have a big soccer fan in our family. Our youngest child has dreams of playing in the pros! This Soccer Ball Crochet Pattern, also from Vliegende Hollander looks like it would be a far quicker project than a set of chess pieces (and definitely less complex). If you’re new to crochet amigurumi, this would be a great first project for you, learning to make a ball shape and adding some pentagons.

This is a great deal of a pattern, as it also includes the patterns for all of the foods that the hungry caterpillar eats!

Interactive Quiet Play Books like this Bundle of Patterns from Joanite Theron Designs are fun to make and fun for keeping little hands and mind occupied during quiet times. This bundle of patterns includes the Dinosaur Playbook, the Out in Space Playbook, and the Pirate Playbook, a great collection of patterns for the adventure-seeking kid in your life!

Play food is such a fun crocheted toy to make! This inventive Crocheted Peelable Watermelon pattern from honeybee69 wraps up into a round watermelon shape and is totally baby-safe with no loose or small parts. Completely wash- and dry-able, this is a lovely toy for a small child to enjoy as they mimic mom and dad cutting up their own watermelon!

Similarly, honeybee69 also has this cute Crocheted Peelable Orange Amigurumi Pattern in a series of interactive food patterns that include apples, corn, pears, bananas, kiwis, and more! Check out all of the great food patterns!

I’ve always wondered why there aren’t more crocheted puppet patterns. It seems like such a good idea! This Crocheted Giraffe Hand Puppet Pattern is an adorable, baby-safe pattern complete with 30 photos and 13 pages of detailed description for how to make this sweet and cartoonish crocheted giraffe puppet!

Alright, knitters, this one’s for you (sorry: knitting just doesn’t lend itself to toys as well as crochet does!), but this Super Sonic Froggie Knitting Pattern from Phoenix Knits just makes me smile! With elastic through his body and down his arms, he can be shot off across the room by putting a finger down each of his front feet and pulling his back legs to stretch the elastic and letting go! How fun is that!? This would make a fun and delightful little gift for a fun-loving kid in your life!

The summer heat really hit in full force for us here in Edmonton (even though it is technically still spring). Having a water balloon fight is a fun way to cool down with the kids, but I don’t like the waste and mess of conventional water balloons. You can crochet reusable water balloons for your kids with this quick and free crochet pattern and Bernat Blanket Yarn. If you don’t want to make your own, there are plenty of makers who will make these for you!

I was just so delighted when I saw this hilarious Crocheted Monster Amigurumi Pattern from aNZeesCraft. This little monster’s fun little suitcase comes right off, but I just can help thinking that that mouth should zipper open to hold your pyjamas or something! Even if you can’t figure out how to modify this pattern to turn make it hold your pyjamas, it’s still so full of character, it would be sure to delight any child!

It’s Time to Start Making Christmas Gifts

Ok, yes, it seems weird to start thinking about Christmas as we’re just getting started with real Spring and Summer, but if we don’t start thinking about it now, we end up in a mad, hand-cramping, making frenzy in December or giving homemade gift cards for something we need to finish up in January-or worse-buying something! But if we start now, get some ideas, make some plans, and start working consistently, we can use the love we have for our friends and family to guide our making plans over the next 6 months and still enjoy holiday festivities come December. And won’t it be so exciting to present our loved ones with beautiful, thoughtful handmade gifts that we’ve been waiting with anticipation to give them?! So, once a month over the next 6 months, I will gather up a group of ideas and patterns to get us excited and motivated to start making some great gifts for our friends and family!

You thought I was going to start with complex patterns, didn’t you? But The New London Wool Roving Pillow Cover Knitting Pattern from The Autumn Acorn is a quick and easy pattern made with wool roving, so it works up super quickly and makes a thick, warm, and luxurious accessory. I’ve included it here for a couple of reasons: you might need some time to locate the materials you need, but the project will be quick and you’ll get the payoff of being able to check an item off of your make list, which will help keep you going!

Again, we don’t have to make elaborate gifts for everyone. The Hillcrest Cowl Knitting Pattern from Peony Knits is a relatively quick and easy knitting pattern. This would be a great project if you’re a new knitter and you want to make some stylish gifts for your friends.

This beautiful Blossom Wall Hanging crochet pattern from 1 Dog Woof is a lovely home decor crochet pattern that will look fantastic on your friend’s wall! It would be a great wall decor for a baby’s room. Also, it can be hung upside down for a rainbow look: same pattern, two entirely different looks. Just a different placement of the tassels. How fun is that? You can totally whip up one of these for your friend with the boho chic vibe.

1 Dog Woof also has this great crochet pattern for the Plume Sweater, which is a batwing sweater, consisting of 2 seamed panels. This sweater is so versatile; it can be worn year round and it’s so on-trend, your fashion-loving friend will adore this sweater. It is size-inclusive, with sizes from XS to 5XL

If you’re less confident about your recipient’s size, you can make this Boho Poncho with Fringe Crochet Pattern from A Frayed Knot Boutique. This fun poncho can be a great way to use up some half skeins of yarn and you can make them in just about any combo for a different look each time.

Again, just because we’re starting early doesn’t mean we need to make everyone a sweater. The Abigail Monogram Towel crochet pattern from Two Little Birds Patterns is a great, thoughtful gift to make for your colleagues or the women in your small group. It’s also nice to work on a small project that uses light cotton yarn during the warm summer months.

It’s a great pattern to work on through the summer months and would make a delightful gift for your sister or friend. Who doesn’t need another a lovey, relaxed handbag? Have you been meaning to try out the buffalo plaid trend? This classic pattern is used in the Buffalo Plaid Sheepskin Lined Cowl Crochet Pattern from Whistle and Ivy and just screams winter and Christmas. You will need to track down some sheepskin fabric for the lining, but the crocheted buffalo plaid is quick and fun to work on and it’s amazing how a few colours of yarn come together to make the plaid pattern. This would make a great gift for a friend or family member.

We can’t forget the fun of making handmade toys for kids. Amigurumi are crocheted stuffed toys that are so much fun to make and give. Check out this fun and adorable Crochet Yoga Lemur Pattern from Yarns of My Heart. This little stuffed toy is completely wired so it can be bent in all sorts of shapes for a fun and interactive toy!

Easy Adorable Amigurumi Crochet Patterns

Want to get started in amigurumi? Amigurumi is a Japanese word that describes anthropomorphic crocheted (or knit) stuffed toys. Amigurumi stuffies are so cute and satisfying to make. Small amigurumis can be made in just a few hours! There are so many great techniques for adding cuteness. They make delightful gifts for children and fun bits of decor to add interest to your bookshelves! If you’d like to get started with some amigurumi, I’ve collected some easy beginner amigurumi patterns and kits here for you!

If you want a quick, first-time amigurumi to make, you can choose from either the pattern only (if you already have all the supplies you need) or a kit including the yarn and the pattern to make this adorable Beginner Charmander Amigurumi from Animal Crochet Store. This super easy little pattern would work up in under an hour and make a delightful little keychain or pocket toy. Kids love little toys and they’re perfect for travelling, popping in a backpack for some creative play!

Modern Gifts to Make for Mom

If you haven’t already started thinking about Mother’s Day, it’s time! It might be past time if you wanted to make something elaborate, but you still have time to create something beautiful for your mom for Mother’s Day! If you’ve been knitting or crocheting or embroidering for a while, there’s no need to present your mom with a mug from Winners; you can make beautiful and modern gifts that she will treasure and you will be pleased to see displayed in her home. This pretty Winter Rose Embroidery Pattern from Florals and Floss might be more your mom’s style. Florals and Floss also has great embroidery kits if you’re just getting started or you don’t want to shop around for all the different colours of floss you don’t have. I have purchased two of her kits and her instructions are great and the kits are so beautifully packaged. If you live in Edmonton, you can pick it up for free (and usually the next day!)

These gorgeous Wildflowers on Transparent Background embroidery kits from 55 Tree are just incredible, aren’t they? I am seriously considering making some of these for decorating our family room when we’re finally done renovating? (Did I mention we’re renovating again, soon? Well, that is the plan, anyway.)

Or you could make your mom a squishy, Chunky Bobble Crochet Pillow with this pattern by my friend Candace at Hello Wildflower Co. This pattern crochets up quickly with super fluffy chenille yarn. While it is an intermediate pattern, if you have the basics of crochet and can follow a pattern, the new stitches are pretty easy to learn and there are great tutorials online to learn: just Google it!

It might be a bit late for you to get this stunning Gaudi Sidewalk Crochet Blanket Pattern from Briana K Designs made by Mother’s Day, but I just had to share it here. Isn’t it incredible? I love the intricate tile-inspired pieces. You could easily match this to your mom’s decor by choosing a matching colour for the border and joining yarn.

A project like this Sunrise Jute Half Circle Rug Pattern from Vanilla Tuesday might be more reasonably completed by Mother’s Day. This is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern using simple stitches and makes for a chic minimalist design. Using jute makes it an environmentally-friendly piece that can be used indoors or outdoors. The fringed border adds just the right amount of personality!

Flower are always a nice idea on Mother’s Day, but what about making an adorable little plant that needs no care and never dies? This is a great gift idea if your mom has pets that love to dig in the plants or if she likes to travel for long periods of time!

Learn to Crochet This Year!

Happy New Year! This year, diets are out and learning is IN! It’s a great year to learn a new craft, like crochet. Since we are all still staying home for a while and it’s a little chilly here in Edmonton, there’s no better time to learn to crochet. I learned to crochet just before Christmas break one year in college. She taught me one stitch: single crochet. That Christmas break, I crocheted a rather large blanket in single crochet and gave it as a gift to my friend. It was probably not very good. I crocheted VERY loosely with the wrong sized hook. My mom tried to teach me double crochet because she noticed how loosely I was crocheting and double crochet would have sped up the process, but I was a stubborn cow, so I said no and tediously finished my project. Now it’s come back around because my kids don’t really like to learn from me either, so I guess it runs in the family. Anyway, all that to say, learning to crochet can happen at any age and if you have a mom/grandma/friend who will teach you, you should accept some help and then you will be able to make some of these cute crochet patterns even sooner. I’ve gathered up a bunch of patterns that are perfect for the beginner crocheter, so check them out and learn to crochet this year!

If you’re looking for some yarn for your project, can I recommend We Crochet? They have a wide selection of yarn in a variety of price points. Sometimes it’s hard to find jus what you need for a project at Michaels or your local yarn store, so ordering online is a great way to get all the supplies you need for a project. Ordering online also eliminates the worry of dye lots… here’s the deal if you’re new to yarn: most yarn is dyed in lots, meaning that even though they use the same formulation for the same colour names, the dye lots can be ever so slightly different from each other, which you may not be able to tell at the store, but you might be able to tell when you work up a larger project. So, always get an extra skein/hank/ball of yarn if you can afford to. There are few things more frustrating than running out of yarn and not being able to find more.

This year has been a year for getting pets. And that’s great, I think. I mean, if you like a pet and you’re going to take care of a pet and you can tolerate that pet smell and don’t mind cleaning up after and caring for another living being, absolutely, get a pet. That is just not my jam. I’m not saying I don’t think petting a dog or cat for a while isn’t nice and that it wouldn’t be nice to have a dog to lick up the spills, I just can’t get with the other stuff. There’s a lot of things I don’t like about them and they outweigh the things I do like. I also know the great responsibility that comes with pet ownership and it’s not a priority I want to make right now. So, it’s not that I’m not an animal lover, I just love them enough to know they shouldn’t live with me. So if you’re like me and you think that puppies are adorable and they’d be fun to cuddle every now and again, but you’re not ready for the commitment of a living pet, have I got the thing for you! While less realistic, this sleepy cat crochet pattern from Firefly Crochets is an easy striped tabby amigurumi cat pattern that is sure to delight any cat-lover. Plus, he is sleeping, which makes it remarkably realistic (haha!). This easy pattern works up quickly and uses worsted weight yarn, which means you probably already have materials on hand, so you can download this pattern, sit down, and get crocheting!
