Quick & Beautiful Handmade Christmas Wall Hangings

It’s kick it into high gear on the gift-making front for me right now! But (of course), as I’m looking for things to make for the family, I’m always finding things to make for myself and our home. Who knows, maybe I’ll make one of these for a family member? I have a spot at my front door for a small one, or I can temporarily displace the standard one I have up most of the time! This might just be my after Christmas project for me! Check out this beautiful collection of handmade Christmas wall hangings and tell me which one you like!

This Crochet Christmas Tree Wall Hanging Pattern from Little Light Design measures 11 inches wide by 28 inches tall, which just might be the perfect size for the spot at my front door. It uses medium (worsted, or a 4) weight yarn and 5.00 mm crochet hook and is an intermediate level crochet pattern. You’ll need a wooden dowel as well, which you can find for a good price here on Amazon.

Little Light Design has a bunch of wall hanging crochet patterns, but I also love the simple beauty of this Noel Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern. This one works up to be about 17 x 25 inches, so a little too wide for the space at the front entrance, but possible the right size for the spot where my regular crochet wall hanging is (that one was made with this pattern). Bonus: I can totally make it whatever colour I want so I can make it match my living room! #makerlife

Here is another small and minimalist wall hanging that could fill that spot at my front entrance. This Minimalist Christmas Tree Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern from Seacliffe Cottage measures approximately 11.5 x 10 inches, excluding the fringe and would work up super quickly! Perfect for a last-minute, but very thoughtful handmade Christmas gift!

Need a set of crochet hooks? This Crochet Hook Set has everything you need to get started with crochet.

Little Light Design has yet another bobbly crochet Christmas wall hanging with this Snowflake Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern. I love the one-colour simplicity of this wall hanging: it would coordinate with any decor! A little larger, this size of this wall hanging is approximately 16.5 inches wide and 32.5 inches long. The skill level on this pattern is easy, but basic crochet skills and techniques are needed.

If you love those bobble stiches, “A Very Bobble Wall Hanging” Crochet Pattern from Love and Stitch Designs is the pattern for you! The relief design on this wall hanging stands out and has a beautiful texture to enjoy. Made with just one colour of worsted weight yarn and a 5.00 mm crochet hook, it works up quickly. Give yourself a few days though, as it measures 16 inches wide by 25.5 inches long.

It really is all about the bobble, eh? If you want to talk quick projects, this macrame-inspired Christmas Tree Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern from Fresh Knack made with super bulky yarn (size 7), here shown made with Bernat Home Decor (one of my favourites… AND I have some of this in my stash right now!!! Stash project! Wahoo!) This one would whip up so quickly, you could probably make it in a short evening of crocheting!

Love and Stitch Designs coming in with this gorgeous Plaid Christmas Tree Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern! I love how plaid can get worked up so beautifully in crochet! Such a fun colourwork technique! It’s amazing how three colours of yarn that you wouldn’t necessarily would work together magically do when they are worked up in a plaid pattern!

Fresh Knack has another macrame-inspired Modern Christmas Tree Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern for you to check out. When I was looking for wall hanging patterns, almost all of them were rectangular-shaped, which is cool, but this one stood out because it has that macrame-style shape. Such a fun and simple design! I love the incorporation of multiple dowels!

Ok, I went looking for some knitting patterns for Christmas wall hangings and seriously, it just came up with more crochet wall hangings! And hey, I’m not about it, because I found this super cute Christmas Gonk Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern from Stitches in Time Co UK. How adorable is this little gnome? Such a sweet pattern! This guy would take a little longer than the earlier patterns I’ve shared since it’s made with DK (3) weight yarn.

Ok, here’s another really adorable, but a little more involved Christmas Deer Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern by Chicaoutlet. This makes a lovely little wall hanging for a home with kids around. Or for someone who loves whimsical things (why are they always for kids? boo).

This whimsical Snowman Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern from Stitch by Fay is a delightful little winter-themed wall hanging made with DK weight yarn, but measuring only 9.5 inches by 7.5 inches (excluding hanging loops and fringe), so it would work up pretty quickly. Of course, you could use a heavier weight yarn , like a worsted or a bulky weight and a larger hook, and make a larger, chunkier wall hanging to fill a larger space. That’s the beauty of making it yourself: customization!!!

I hope you enjoyed this collection of wall hanging crochet patterns. Grab one today and make a quick gift or pin it for later for a great winter break project!

It’s Time to Start Making Christmas Gifts

Ok, yes, it seems weird to start thinking about Christmas as we’re just getting started with real Spring and Summer, but if we don’t start thinking about it now, we end up in a mad, hand-cramping, making frenzy in December or giving homemade gift cards for something we need to finish up in January-or worse-buying something! But if we start now, get some ideas, make some plans, and start working consistently, we can use the love we have for our friends and family to guide our making plans over the next 6 months and still enjoy holiday festivities come December. And won’t it be so exciting to present our loved ones with beautiful, thoughtful handmade gifts that we’ve been waiting with anticipation to give them?! So, once a month over the next 6 months, I will gather up a group of ideas and patterns to get us excited and motivated to start making some great gifts for our friends and family!

You thought I was going to start with complex patterns, didn’t you? But The New London Wool Roving Pillow Cover Knitting Pattern from The Autumn Acorn is a quick and easy pattern made with wool roving, so it works up super quickly and makes a thick, warm, and luxurious accessory. I’ve included it here for a couple of reasons: you might need some time to locate the materials you need, but the project will be quick and you’ll get the payoff of being able to check an item off of your make list, which will help keep you going!

Again, we don’t have to make elaborate gifts for everyone. The Hillcrest Cowl Knitting Pattern from Peony Knits is a relatively quick and easy knitting pattern. This would be a great project if you’re a new knitter and you want to make some stylish gifts for your friends.

Update: this pattern is unfortunately no longer available. Check out these other great cowl knitting patterns for some great options!

This beautiful Blossom Wall Hanging crochet pattern from 1 Dog Woof is a lovely home decor crochet pattern that will look fantastic on your friend’s wall! It would be a great wall decor for a baby’s room. Also, it can be hung upside down for a rainbow look: same pattern, two entirely different looks. Just a different placement of the tassels. How fun is that? You can totally whip up one of these for your friend with the boho chic vibe.

1 Dog Woof also has this great crochet pattern for the Plume Sweater, which is a batwing sweater, consisting of 2 seamed panels. This sweater is so versatile; it can be worn year round and it’s so on-trend, your fashion-loving friend will adore this sweater. It is size-inclusive, with sizes from XS to 5XL

If you’re less confident about your recipient’s size, you can make this Boho Poncho with Fringe Crochet Pattern from A Frayed Knot Boutique. This fun poncho can be a great way to use up some half skeins of yarn and you can make them in just about any combo for a different look each time.

Again, just because we’re starting early doesn’t mean we need to make everyone a sweater. The Abigail Monogram Towel crochet pattern from Two Little Birds Patterns is a great, thoughtful gift to make for your colleagues or the women in your small group. It’s also nice to work on a small project that uses light cotton yarn during the warm summer months.

The Wildrose Shoulder Bag Crochet Pattern is All About Ami‘s latest pattern using her signature wildrose granny square. It’s a great pattern to work on through the summer months and would make a delightful gift for your sister or friend. Who doesn’t need another a lovey, relaxed handbag? Also, you can get this pattern as part of a Lionbrand Kit, which includes the pattern and all the yarn you need to make this project.

Have you been meaning to try out the buffalo plaid trend? This classic pattern is used in the Buffalo Plaid Sheepskin Lined Cowl Crochet Pattern from Whistle and Ivy and just screams winter and Christmas. You will need to track down some sheepskin fabric for the lining, but the crocheted buffalo plaid is quick and fun to work on and it’s amazing how a few colours of yarn come together to make the plaid pattern. This would make a great gift for a friend or family member.

We can’t forget the fun of making handmade toys for kids. Amigurumi are crocheted stuffed toys that are so much fun to make and give. Check out this fun and adorable Crochet Yoga Lemur Pattern from Yarns of My Heart. This little stuffed toy is completely wired so it can be bent in all sorts of shapes for a fun and interactive toy!

Update: unfortunately, this pattern is no longer available. Check out these other lemur amigurumi crochet patterns for some great options!

12 Classic Festive Knit and Crochet Stocking Patterns

It’s a great year to make your own stockings! Even if it’s late and you don’t think you’ll get them all done before Christmas, don’t fret! Do what you were going to do anyways and then consider yourself ahead for next year, not behind for this year! That’s what I did a few years ago: after Christmas, I sat down and knitted for 5 days straight to make our family stockings and then they hung around empty for another week before I put all the decorations… but then I was all ready for next year! Handmade stockings are a beautiful way to add homey-ness to your Christmas decor, so I’ve collected a beautiful bundle of knit and crochet stockings that can stretch to fit whatever loot Santa has for your loved ones!

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

First up: the knits! I often start with crochet, so I thought I would shake things up a big. And one of the things I prefer about knit stockings here is the closeness of the stitches, so things don’t get caught on the holes when Santa is stuffing them full of goodies. This fun cable-knit chunky Magnolia Stocking Knitting Pattern by White Oak Knits is a pattern that is sure to hold your interest and work up quickly since it is knit with super bulky yarn. You just might have enough time before Christmas Eve to make a couple of these for special folks in your life!

I love the vintage vibe of this Holly Stocking Knitting Pattern from Annies Woolens. Such a classic Christmas look for homey ski-lodge-inspired winter decor. If you’ve been wanting to explore colour work, you’ll love this pattern because of the ease working in the round. This pattern also includes an alphabet chart so you can personalize your stockings!

Vintage patterns are often a super good deal and this Vintage Knit Stocking Patterns from CooloRoonie is no exception. At under $2, you can make your own vintage vibe stockings from a genuine vintage pattern!

The Jumbo Knitted Stocking Pattern from Prinku is sure to excite your favourite little one with the dreams of no limits for what can fit in their stocking. This simply stockinette knit jumbo stocking will work up quickly with a super bulky yarn; it’s the perfect mindless pattern for the intermediate knitter, but an eager beginner can handle the easy to follow step by step photos and instructions.

Another fun vintage knit stocking pattern for you! How fun are these Folk Patterned Vintage Christmas Stocking Knitting Patterns from BC Funk Factory? These stockings work up to be about 28 inches long and includes instructions for making both the Scandinavian Motifs, trees, and snowflakes. This is an advanced knitting pattern, so you might want to save this project for the lazy days following Christmas, but you will be so proud of yourself when you’ve finished these stunning vintage stockings!

I love Christmas gnomes! They’re so adorable and still so trendy! Check out this fun Gnome Christmas Stocking Knitting Pattern from Kathleens Keepsakes! If knitting in the round isn’t your thing, you can make this pattern, as it’s knit flat and sewn up afterwards.

One final knitting pattern. This Old Fashioned Christmas Stocking Knitting Pattern from Aunt Janets Designs is a cable-knit, timeless stocking that will suit any Christmas decor. This pattern is a great one to use up your worsted weight stash and it is knit in the round for a quick knit project! I love knitting in the round on circular needles. If you’re looking for your own set of circular needles, I highly recommend a set of interchangeable needles from KnitPicks. These are what I use and I love the versatility of circular needles. I use them for almost every knitting project, even if it is knit flat. It’s just so easy to keep track of one circular needle instead of worrying about losing one needle! (They also have a wide variety of affordable yarn!)

Ok, now on to the crochet patterns! There are plenty of great crochet stocking patterns, like this Crafty Boho Stocking Crochet Pattern from A Crafty Concept. I love the bobbles and the faux fur topper and pompom! So much fuzzy and festive texture!

I’m sure you knew you could make cables with crochet, but if you didn’t have an idea of where you could us it, this Big Bold Cabled Stocking Crochet Pattern from A Crocheted Simplicity is a great pattern to put it into practice. Also I love those pompoms! Maybe I need to make new stockings with pompoms! (I don’t know: I think my kids are getting to be a little attached to the stockings they have, though!)

Or how about this fun Buffalo Plaid Christmas Stocking Crochet Pattern also from A Crocheted Simplicity?! Don’t you just love the texture of the lemon peel stitch and the fun buffalo plaid? Such a classic and if you’ve incorporated some plaid into your decor, or if you’re trying to, this is a great way to do it. I love this black and white and grey option because it would be so easy to work into our decor…. Hmmmm… maybe plaid stockings. (So many ideas!)

This darling Winter Braid Stocking Crochet Pattern from Sheepish Stitches has a great horizontal braid pattern worked through it for a lovely subtle texture that is warm and inviting. Another fantastic option!

I love the way this O Christmas Tree Crocheted Stocking Pattern from A Crocheted Simplicity works the textured puffy stitches into a Christmas tree design element for this stocking. This pattern uses easy-to-find worsted weight yarn, so you might be able to pull something great out of your stash!

I hope you found some inspiration for the stockings you’re going to make for your family or another family you care about. It’s so worth it to learn to knit or crochet to make your own stockings because they tend to be quite time-consuming. I think of it as the opportunity to think and pray for my recipient, which is one of the invaluable things about handmade. So, go grab yourself one of these patterns and some yarn and get making. Or pin it for later so you can find it when you’re ready!

FREE PATTERN: Gnome Tea Towel Topper Crochet Pattern

Hello friends! I am taking a slight diversion from my regularly scheduled sharing of other people’s patterns and here I am sharing my own. To celebrate this generous Christmas season, this pattern is FREE!!! It’s right here! No clicking away, no scrolling forever and ever. No wondering how you’ll ever find the pattern! It’s right here. No more clicks!

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

I just wrote this pattern today, so it’s super fresh and it’s super-fast, just in time for last-minute gifts for friends, family and colleagues who you want to give something special to, but you have no idea what to get them? Got a nephew who is too old for $20 in a card, but you still want to give a little gift to? Perfect! Got a mom who has everything? She would be delighted by this little handy character! Got a co-worker you hardly know that gave you an unexpected gift and you want to reciprocate? I gotcha.

Meet Snaanbag, the Tea Towel Topper Gnome! Even better, Snaanbag isn’t just a tea towel topper, he’s a tea towel holder! That’s right! He’s got a wooden ring that holds your tea towel so you can easily wash it. You can make this adorable gnome in neutral or Christmassy colours, depending on your mood or decor. He’s a little grumpy, but if you dry your hands quickly on his beard, you’ll be ok.

Because I just wrote this pattern today, it has not been tested. I welcome your feedback, if you want to provide it! If you catch an error or provide me with helpful feedback for improving the pattern and include good pictures of your gnome topper, I will send you a free pdf of the pattern! Get in touch with me via the contact me page; I would love to hear from you!

Snaanbag the Tea Towel Topper Gnome

Crochet Hook: H/8 or 5.00 mm hook
Yarn Weight: (4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight (I used Red Heart Super Saver)
Yarn colours: Hat: Grey (or colour of your choice) Nose: Beige (or colour of your choice)
Stitch markers (1 of any kind, 2 locking), yarn needle, needle & thread for stitching button
Embellishments: 60 mm (2.5 in) wooden ring – measurement taken from the outer edges of ring. (You can also use a covered elastic hair tie), 15 mm (.6 in) button, small amount of polyfill for nose

Finished Size

Tip of the hat to bottom of nose unfolded, laid flat, length: 22 cm (8.625 in).
Folded & buttoned: 11 cm.
The hat only unfolded, laid flat: 20 cm (8 in).
At the widest point of hat, width: 11 cm (4.25 in)

US Terminology

Rnd = Round
MC = Magic Circle
SC = Single Crochet
St = Stitch
YO = Yarn Over
Inv Dec = Invisible Decrease

Special Techniques

Invisible Fasten off – Pull yarn tail through loop and thread onto a yarn needle. Skipping the stitch next to the last stitch of the Rnd, insert the needle under the top 2 loops of the next stitch (where you would insert your hook for a stitch) and pull yarn through. Insert the needle into the middle of the last stitch of the round and down through to the back of the work. Secure yarn by weaving the yarn under 2-4 stitches; do not cut excess tail yarn. (Crochet Arcade has a good tutorial if you need more visuals.)

Invisible Decrease – insert hook under front loop of the first stitch and leave the loop on the hook. Insert hook under front loop of next stitch, YO, pull through 2 (front) loops on hook, YO, pull through 2 loops on hook to complete SC. (All About Ami has a good tutorial!)

Hat

Rnd 1: 5 SC into a MC. (5 sts)

Rnd 2: 2 SC in 1st st. Place marker in 1st st of Rnd. SC to marker. (6 sts)

Always place the marker back in the 1st st of the new Rnd.

Rnd 3-21: Repeat Rnd 2 until you have 25 st in the Rnd. (7-25 sts)

Rnd 22 (add the ring): 2 SC in 1st st, SC 4, SC 8 around the wooden ring: Place wooden ring under working yarn, behind the work (inside the hat). Insert hook in next stitch and YO under the ring, pull through 1 loop, YO above the ring and pull through 2 loops, completing the SC (8 times total). SC to marker. (26 sts)

Rnd 23-32: Repeat Rnd 2. (27-36 sts)

At this point, the wooden ring should be hidden when the hat is laid flat. If it is not, repeat Rnd 2 until it is. If you need more rows here, your st count total will differ from the pattern going forward.

Place nose positioning markers: Before continuing, place 2 locking markers 2 sts from start of Rnd and 10 sts from start of Rnd on the right side of the work. These will remain in place until the nose is positioned.

Rnd 33 (make the button hole): 2 SC in 1st st. SC 12. Ch 1. Skip next st. SC around to marker. (37 sts)

Rnd 34: 2 SC in 1st st, SC around, treating Ch 1 as a st. (38 st)

Ensure you can fit your button through the button hole you have created.

Cut yarn, leaving a 46 cm (18 in) tail.

Use the Invisible Fasten Off technique, weaving the yarn in the direction of where the nose will be placed and DO NOT CUT the excess yarn tail. We will use this yarn to secure the nose in place.

Attach the button

Lay the hat flat with the ring at the back. Secure the button in between Rnds 3 & 4, in the centre of the front of the hat, when laid flat.

Nose

Rnd 1: 5 SC in MC. (5 sts)

Place the marker in the 1st st of Rnd 2. Always place marker back in 1st st of Rnd.

Rnd 2: 2 SC in each st around. (10 sts)

Rnd 3: *2 SC in st, SC. Repeat from * around to marker. (15 sts)

Rnds 4-6: SC around to marker. (15 sts)

Rnd: 7: *Inv Dec, SC. Repeat from * around to marker. (10 sts) Stuff firmly with polyfil.

Rnd 8: Inv Dec around to marker (5 sts)

Cut yarn leaving a 20 cm (8 in) tail and pull through. Thread a yarn needle and weave the needle through the front loops of the 5 stitches of the last Rnd. Pull to tighten and fasten off. Weave the tail inside the stuffing of the nose cut the excess yarn.

Attach the nose

Position the nose with Rnd 1 facing out and between the 2 markers on the underside of the hat along Rnd 5 of the nose. Using the excess tail yarn from the hat, attach the nose with by pushing the needle through one stitch of Rnd 5 of the nose and to the front of the hat. Backstitch along Rnd 32 of the hat onto Rnd 5 of the nose, using the previously placed markers to position the nose. Secure and weave tail through 5-10 stitches of the hat and ending in the nose. Pull slightly and snip tail yarn so the end disappears into the stuffing of the nose.

That’s it! Loop your new little friend to your stove handle or your dishwasher handle and add a tea towel (I like these ones!) to the wooden ring and you can dry your hands on his beard until it’s time for it to be washed!

I hope you enjoyed this free pattern! As soon as I get it formatted into a pdf, I’ll add a link to an ad-free printable pdf pattern that you can download from Etsy or Ravelry for a small fee. Until then (and afterwards!), enjoy it for free here on the blog! If you liked this pattern, please share it on Pinterest!

How cute is this Penguin Crochet Pattern from Cute Toys By Tatiana in his winter cap and scarf? This Snowman and Red Nosed Fawn Crochet Pattern from BVoe668 reminds me of the 1964 stop motion film Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, which I loved as a kid. I love having Christmas decorations that the kids can touch and play with instead of everything being fussy and hands-off. This is a great way to invite littles into the cheer of the Christmas season!

You could make a whole bunch of them and string them up as an adorable gingerbread man garland! They would also make a super fun holiday addition to a child’s play kitchen! So many fun options for this quick and easy pattern.

Of course, we can’t forget Santa. This Crocheted Santa Amigurumi Pattern from R Nata is cuddle-sized when made with the yarn called for, at 20-22 cm tall. Such a sweet little toy for a little one to enjoy!

I just had to share this super cuddly Santa Crochet Pattern from Crochet Wonders Design! This Santa reminds me of the Santa in the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer holiday special as well, with his modern, stylized moustache and beard. He’s made with velour blanket yarn, so it makes the cuddliest stuffed toy! So soft!

Christmas calls for all kinds of elves and gnomes, so if you want to make yourself an adorable bearded gnome for your Christmas decor, try this Amigurumi Christmas Gnome Crochet Pattern from Happy Dolls Hand Made. The pattern includes both the large and the small gnome and they make the perfect whimsical holiday decor! And bonus: if you have kids or grandkids: unbreakable!

This Crochet Christmas Elves Pattern from R Nata is just the thing to bring some Christmas cheer and whimsy! Making Time: Perfect Gifts to Make for Christmas

It’s makin’ time, baby! There’s still almost two months until Christmas and since many of us are not as busy this year running kids around to multiple activities or going out for drinks at restaurants, we may as well take advantage of this time at home and make some lovely handmade Christmas gifts for our friends and family. I found this great group of patterns (mostly crochet) for you to check out and download and get making today!

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

First off, I found this adorable Amigurumi Christmas Baubles Crochet Pattern Set from Cutie Me. This four-in-one pattern includes 15 pages of instructions of how to create these adorable Christmas ornaments. The set includes a bear, a penguin, a bunny and a snowman for a fun and festive unique Christmas gift. Perfect for the person who has everything, no one is going to have one of these!

How cute would an adorable couple of munchkins you know look in these fun Christmas Tree Hats from Too Cute Crochet? This pattern includes 5 sizes from newborn to teen/adult, so you can make the whole family a silly tree hat for some fun holiday family photos! The pattern includes an easy beading technique and a tutorial for working the reverse single crochet stitch. I love finding a pattern that will teach me a new technique! It’s a great way to expand your skills.

Or you could make your little one an adorable reindeer hat, with a matching doll with this Crochet Pattern for Reindeer Hat and Reindeer Doll, also from Too Cute Crochet! This sweet hat pattern comes with instructions to make in 5 different baby and child sizes: Newborn, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 2-3 years, and 4-10 years. This festive hat will make a great photo prop for winter photos. It’s an easy pattern to make, so if you’ve got the basics of crochet and want to expand your skills, I think this is a great next pattern for you!

I just love the subtle beauty of this Crocheted Nativity Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern from Maggie’s Crochet. You can use this pattern to crochet a wall hanging OR an afghan to adorn your home or give to a loved one this Christmas. The pattern comes with instructions to make the wall hanging size (33″ wide x 36″ tall) or the afghan size (46″ wide x 68″ long). What a pretty and unique pattern; it would make a great gift!

For a nativity set that the whole family can enjoy, try making one of these Amigurumi Nativity Sets from Storyland Amis. Your kids will love getting involved with the nativity characters and enjoy playing with these adorable little toys in the weeks leading up to Christmas. I crocheted a little nativity set for my kids many years ago and they loved it, but it was spoiled in a basement flood, so we don’t have it anymore. Every time I see these patterns, it makes me want to crochet up a new set!

For a more grown-up nativity, there’s this classy Mary, Joseph and Jesus Crochet Pattern from Studio Wow Toys. Now that my kids are older and not much playing with the Nativity scene so much (though we do still pull out the Fisher-Price Little People Nativity set and stuff gets moved around… so someone must be playing with it!), this sophisticated nativity might be just the thing for our place. I love having decorations that won’t break if I didn’t put them away properly! And bonus: if the kids do want to play with them, it’s not a problem!

I just couldn’t decide which of these gorgeous nativity crochet patterns to feature, but I couldn’t omit this stunning set from Amour Fou Crochet. I love the details on this beautiful doll set. This is an easy level pattern, so if you’ve been inspired to branch into amigurumi with these gorgeous dolls, this is a great pattern, as it is simple and detailed and written with beginners in mind!

Stockings make another great gift idea. This Alpine Stocking Crochet Pattern from Nella’s Cottage features the textured alpine stitch, which adds lovely cosy-ness and interest to this holiday stocking. This is an intermediate pattern and works up to be an oversized stocking, measuring approximately 23″ tall from hook to toe using a 6.0 mm hook and 5 weight yarn, but you could use whatever yarn you like!

Did you ever make paper chains at school or at home for crafts? Sometimes we got to hang ours on the Christmas tree (ok… always… I don’t think my mom ever said we couldn’t hang something we’d made on the tree! Thanks mom!). Well, now you can make a lasting paper chain with this Crochet Paper Chain Garland pattern from Crochet and Cancer. This is a beginner level pattern and it is great for using up yarn remnants! Make it in multiple colours or one colour for a classic style. Decorate it with beads or buttons! So many fun options!

Update: Please note that the original pattern (as pictured here) is no longer available, so the link above takes you to a slightly different, but similar paper chain pattern.

Since we’re talking classic garlands, how about a popcorn garland?! But this one won’t fall apart all over your floor or get eaten by the dog (hopefully!). This Crochet Popcorn Garland Pattern from The Farmhouse Nook is a fun take on popcorn garland, with which you can get that rustic, farmhouse style with durable and adorable crochet. Little scraps of white or off-white yarn and some twine add just the right homey feel!

If popcorn garland isn’t your thing, check out this classy Christmas Star Garland Crochet Pattern from Outstanding Crochet. You can download the pdf pattern on Etsy for a small fee, or if you read the listing closely, you’ll see that she has a link for the free video tutorial on her website! Personally, I prefer to knit and crochet from a written pattern, but many people love videos to show them how to do it! And a bonus if it’s free! This garland makes a lovely addition to your Christmas decor and it makes a unique gift idea for the person who doesn’t need anything!

Ok, knitters, I know I’ve largely ignored you in this pattern round up. What can I say? Learn to crochet! (hahaha). But here’s a cute Knitted Christmas Tree Pattern for you to make from Squibblybups. They would make sweet little hanging ornaments or additions to wreaths or cute little additions to gift-wrapping! You can decorate them with beads or buttons for some variation as well. This pattern also includes instructions for how to put these trees together into a festive wreath!

I hope you’ve got plenty of ideas for making some great unique Christmas gifts! There are so many lovely patterns out there, and great independent designers to support. During this crazy time when things are so uncertain for everyone, purchasing a pattern from a designer on Etsy or Ravelry or from their own website is a great way to share the love of making and make it financially possible for these designers to keep creating great patterns for us! So, pick up a pattern today or pin this to come back to them later

Great collection of patterns to make for Christmas! Christmas ornaments, Christmas hats, stockings, nativity sets, wall hangings and garlands! Can't wait to make some of these great patterns! #crochet #knit #crochetpatterns #knitpatterns #crochetforchristmas #CraftEvangelist

What to Make During Christmas Break

Happy Christmas break! We made it! Kids did all the winter concert things, you did the parties, you got those cards out (or did you?)? You did all the things! (Ok, I’ve done some of the things). But we made it. I recorded my temporary greeting at work and updated my Out of Office autoreply. I work at one of those great places that close over the Christmas break, so I’m looking forward to a lovely break! Next year, I think I’m going to take a week off at the end of November so I can feel a little bit more ready, but here we are now. Now it’s time to rest (and wrap) and make!

If you’ve been madly trying to finish up a few handmade gifts for your loved ones, you might just want to take a break from making for a while. Sometimes people lose their mojo for making during this past season, especially if you’ve been prepping things to sell at craft fairs or making gifts for people. But I find this is a great time to start looking at fun patterns to make for myself or just browse to see what interesting things there are to make. I’ve often spent the winter break making Christmas accessories for my home, like the stockings I knit one year. I never manage to get these things made in time for Christmas for ourselves, but I just think about it getting done in plenty of time for next year!

So what will you make this winter break? Need some ideas? Why don’t you check out this great collection of fantastic patterns to make this winter? Something for you? Something for someone special? Something for the house?

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

Something for yourself maybe? Or a monarch loving friend? Would you like to try some crochet colourwork? Or a sweater? Try it all at once with this easy/intermediate level Monarch Sweater Crochet pattern. Working with a few colours is a bit of a challenge, but if you’ve mastered the basic stitches (seriously just chain, single crochet and back loop half double crochet) you can totally make this pattern. Also, HaileyBailey has written this as a fully customizable pattern, including suggestions for customize your sweater to fit any size, and if you’re a bit bigger on top and smaller on the bottom, this is a great pattern to make something that fits YOU just perfectly.

Want to whip up something quick for yourself? Think making a sweater takes weeks and weeks of work? Try this Shit That’s Quick Sweater from Knitatude. This baby whips up really quickly for a sweater. With super bulky size yarn and some simple stitches with some fun cable detail on the arms, there’s enough here to keep you interested, but also easy enough to watch shows with your family for most of it.

As a maker, do you ever give gift certificates for handmade things for Christmas because you just plain ran out of time? I’ve totally done that. There’s no shame. Creative people have grand plans and are often not so great at time management. Did you promise a sweater to a special man in your life? if you didn’t, you should. Especially if you crochet, because look at this fantastic WULF Men’s Pullover Crochet Pattern! So classy. It’s not always easy for crocheters to find good sweater patterns. Because crochet typically makes a thicker fabric, sweaters are often really bulky, but I think this one is just fabulous, don’t you!?

Maybe you’ve been wanting some boot cuffs. Check out this Cabled Boot Cuffs Knitting Pattern. The fun thing about more intricate cable patterns like this is that they’re small and they come together relatively quickly. If you’ve never made a cable-knit project before, boot cuffs are a great project to start with. The beauty of this pattern is that you can wear them under the boot like this or folded over the boot for a cuff like this:

So, whichever you prefer, you can make these Cabled Boot Cuffs 4 ways! The bottom half has a ribbed pattern, so you can have 4 different looks from one set of boot cuffs. What a fun pattern!

I’ve really been enjoying Chantel’s patterns from Knitatude. I love this off-the-shoulder look of this Crossback Sweater. It’s also reversible! So you can wear it with the wrap in front or at the back as seen here. This pattern looks interesting but also has simple stitches, so it’s perfect for the advanced beginner. If you’re starting to venture into slightly more difficult projects, this one is for you! So you can stop making dishcloths and you can start making clothes! For yourself! That are fun and stylish. Knitting isn’t just for grannies; you can make trendy, sexy things too! And you’ll be the only one of your friends who has one just like it. Can’t go out to the store and just buy this!

Sometimes you just need to try something different. Like embroidery! This is a fibre craft that you can eventually bring into your knitting and crochet! So start with this Beginner Floral Embroidery Pattern of Wildflowers on a hoop and then maybe try it on a handmade dishcloth, or cup cozy or sweater! Wouldn’t that be fun? I love the beautiful simplicity of the wildflowers and embroidery adds such a special touch to handknit or crocheted items. It’s a great skill to develop and winter break is a great time to try something new! Also, if you take this inspiration to your knitting and crochet, you can use up scrap yarn in the process! I love to put all those bits and pieces to good use!

Did you attend an ugly Christmas sweater party this year? Did you feel blue because you didn’t have one to wear? I just can’t bring myself to buy one in a store, but somehow I feel like it would be so much more fun to make one myself. I know buying one would be less expensive than all the time it’s going to take me to make one myself, but there’s just something more authentic about a handmade ugly Christmas sweater. And if you think they have to be knit, you’re wrong! Check out this crochet pattern for this Rudolf Christmas Sweater. How fun is this? Get working now and you’ll be all ready for next year’s party.

I still think that if I were truly to make ugly Christmas sweaters for my family, I would probably have to go with Harry Potter-inspired sweaters. This one is also crochet. I would probably prefer to do something knitted, but I couldn’t find a pattern for humans, so I guess I’ll have to make one up!

I did, however, manage to find one for dogs! If you have a special dog in your life, let me tell you, that dog does not know that you missed Christmas and their sweater is late. Most of the time they have no idea what day it is anyway! You can still make them a fun Gryffindor sweater for the cold winter months ahead. Check out this Mischief Managed Dog Sweater pattern. Your dog could totally get away with wearing this more frequently than you could your Harry Potter sweater!

Ok, back to the pretty things. Here is another relatively quick knit sweater pattern. The Moss Stitch Sweater is worked up with super bulky yarn, so there are just fewer stitches. It’s a great starter project, even for the novice knitter and will give you a perfect transitional piece that will take you fashionably through the seasons. This is a fun pattern that will work up quickly and be so cozy to wear! I love this golden yellow colour… so gorgeous!

Have you seen these bobble sleeves sweaters? What are your thoughts about them? They’re pretty fun, definitely a statement piece, but not one I’m sure I could pull off wearing this sweater. Super fun though. Here’s the link to this Bobble Sleeves Cardigan. If you make this, you’re going to have to show me a picture and tell me where you wear it. Maybe you’re just way cooler than me and can wear funky things without feeling weird.

Winter break is also a great time to make a blanket! Bigger projects like this are soothing to sit under while you cozy up and watch a movie while it snows outside. I love cozy times when you don’t have to go anywhere, don’t you? This Crochet Square Sampler Blanket Pattern is also perfect to make while travelling since you can make it in pieces and then seam it up afterwards! Samper patterns are also great because they keep the project interesting. you get to make a bunch of different stitches and textures in coordinating colours to make a beautiful cohesive blanket! It’s so satisfying to finish these projects once they all come together!

Crocheters, have you ever been jealous of the beautiful cable-knit patterns that are out there for knitters? So intricate and lovely looking? Well, did you know that you can cable-crochet? It’s a little different, but you can get very similar looks. If you want to learn, try out this Annandale Cable Braided Blanket Crochet Pattern with a Celtic Aran cable pattern, perfect for Irish-inspired home decor. A complex interwoven Celtic design, this blanket is an heirloom-quality project. The pattern brings together three different cable motifs in a symmetric layout to generate a spectacular visual effect. A lace border frames the cables with a feathery elegance. This is a perfect project to make for your home when you have some extra crochet time on your hands!

For something simpler, but still just as satisfying, try this Canyon Throw crochet blanket pattern from Two Little Birds Patterns. This crochet throw pattern is an easy and versatile crochet pattern to compliment any home decor. Make this crochet blanket for yourself or as a beautiful and unique gift for someone special. The modern chevron-look of this stitch pattern is easy to learn and your finished throw blanket will keep you cozy all season!

Wrap yourself up in this romantic throw blanket from Meghan Makes Do. The Livy throw is the perfect pattern to keep you busy this winter season. Made using simple triangle and hexagon motifs it works up fast. You will need to know basic crochet stitches as well as how to make a puff stitch.

The Bicycle Race Crochet Blanket Pattern is an easy pattern for a blanket with a fun repeating bicycle pattern. This is a filet style crochet blanket with rows of bicycles that change directions each row. This pattern includes written directions in US terms and a crochet chart. You can make this blanket in any size as well as any gauge. How cute is this? It would make such a cute baby blanket pattern that’s not too baby-ish. It’d be perfect for anyone, especially bicycle lovers!

So, have I inspired you to make something while you have a bit of extra time to sit around this winter break? Do you get a little bit of extra time to relax this season? Which of these great patterns will you get started on this Christmas! Merry Christmas, makers! Pick up one of these great patterns for yourself or pin it for later!

Mad About Plaid Patterns

Plaid has been back in full force for fall and winter for a few years now. Classic buffalo plaid is becoming synonymous with rustic, chalet-style decor and outdoorsy aesthetic. It reminds me of hiking and warming up after chilly outdoor activities. It reminds me of an old-fashioned Christmas tree hunt and hot chocolate. When I discovered you could crochet a buffalo plaid pattern using red, maroon and black yarn together, I was so excited! It’s so fun to watch the plaid come together with simple stitches mixed with colour changes. So, if you’re mad about plaid, check out this collection of fantastic plaid patterns and plan to make something for the holidays.

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

My first try at plaid in crochet was with a pattern by Bethany from Whistle and Ivy. She’s got some great tutorials for learning to crochet this pattern. She’s also got plenty of free patterns on her website. She’s designed this little moose plaid lovey crochet pattern, which would be a great first start into plaid and you get to make a little bit of amigurumi, too! I shared her plaid hat pattern here on the blog before too.

She’s also got this adorable buffalo plaid ornament pattern! These little ornaments would make great stash busters and last-minute gift ideas for co-workers or friends! I love the festive toppers! They almost look like plaid apples for your tree! Anyone would be delighted to receive one of these as a gift!

The shop Two Little Birds Patterns has loads of cute plaid patterns to crochet, including this adorable plaid tree throw pillow crochet pattern. I love how the plaid pattern is just on the trees and makes a simple throw pillow a conversation piece. Crocheted with just a single crochet stitch, this is a great pattern for a relatively new crocheter to branch into colourwork.

You could also work up one of these crocheted buffalo plaid cowl patterns to add some buffalo plaid to your outdoor wardrobe. Perfect for chilly days when you want to add some warmth and some rustic style. This pattern looks pretty easy to crochet as it’s worked as a flat rectangle with a simple button edge. It’s a great pattern to show off some fun wooden buttons, too.

You can hardly have a collection of plaid patterns without a hat pattern. This Autumn Plaid Beanie Crochet Pattern is an adorable messy bun beanie pattern that makes room for a big top knot. I love the natural coloured brim she’s chosen for this hat and it’s a great idea to finish one of these cute hats off with a custom tag! Here’s where I got mine.

This hat is crocheted with a knit-look stitch called the waistcoat stitch; it makes a nice tightly woven knit-look fabric, perfect for hats and perfect for colourwork designs. The Plaid Pines Crochet Beanie pattern uses a different colourwork technique to form the plaid pattern, using only 2 colours of yarn to form the plaid pattern and alternating the two colours in the mid-tone sections. Such a festive tree pattern to make for the holiday season!

The Thermal Buffalo Plaid Toque Crochet Pattern is worked in a front post double crochet for a thick and cozy hat. I love a thick brim on a handmade hat and don’t forget one of those gorgeous faux fur pompoms! My personal favourites are from GingerSnap Handmade Co.

I love the plaid baubles on this Holiday Plaid Ornament Crochet Pillow Pattern and don’t you just love the detail of the jute bows on top? How adorable would this be decorating your living room during the holiday season? One of these pillows would make a perfect handmade gift idea for that person who has everything!

The Crochet Plaid Baby Blanket Pattern is an easy pattern perfect for beginners, using only a couple of basic stitches. The pattern makes a 53″ by 61″ blanket, but could easily be adjusted for a larger or smaller size, according to your preference. The plaid woven stitch makes this a warm and soft blanket, perfect for that new baby or a trendy throw for a living room.

I think plaid is just the right thing for a stocking. So festive! And can be made to match any colour scheme! This Buffalo Plaid Christmas Stocking Crochet Pattern is a classic crochet stocking pattern with a simple textured stitch and a thick ribbed cuff! I love the added tassel details as well! Fill this up with some goodies for a lovely gift for anyone!

Back to another pattern by Whistle and Ivy. This Buffalo Plaid Crochet Wreath Pattern is such a fantastic take on the buffalo plaid trend; so cute for Christmas. I’m a total wreath fan. I love the rustic and fun look of this simple wreath. How cute would this be to welcome guests at a winter getaway cabin? So festive!

I hope you enjoyed this round-up of crocheted plaid patterns. If you haven’t tried this fun colourwork technique, now is the time to pick up a pattern and learn a new skill! It’s not so hard and the result is very impressive. I love to learn new methods of achieving interesting crocheted patterns! Grab a pattern today or pin it for later.

Amigurumi for Christmas

I just love amigurumi! According to Wikipedia: Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures. The word is a portmanteau of the Japanese words ami, meaning “crocheted or knitted”, and nuigurumi, meaning “stuffed doll”. And this time of year is the perfect time to make some. Amigurumi is perfect for Christmas, as gifts for children, as decorations for your home or tree, as gifts for co-workers. They work up pretty quickly and are really fun to make; you can also use up some of your odds and ends of yarn since they’re usually pretty small and you can customise their colours to whatever you have on hand! So many people are delighted by amigurumi, it makes the perfect whimsical addition to this festive season! Check out these adorable stuffed crocheted creatures and pick out a pattern to start working on today!

How about this festive Little Christmas Deer Crochet Pattern? One pattern gives you all the instructions you need to make these little amigurumi deer dolls, with plenty of high-quality photos to walk you through it. Depending on the size of yarn you use, these little guys could be toys for kids or decorations for your tree!

How adorable are these gingerbread people? Again, here’s another pattern with instructions to make both tops: a Gingerbread Man and Girl Couple Amigurumi Pattern. How much fun would a set of these be for a newlywed couple for their first Christmas? They’re so sweet with all their decoration details!

I’m a sucker for gnomes! I love their big furry beards and festive hats on their squat, rotund bodies. Herbert the Christmas Gnome Amigurumi Pattern would make a great addition to my mantle (which is frankly looking a little sad this year… see my Instagram post about it). But I think this guy would spruce it right up!

Who can resist an adorable cartoon-ish Mr Santa Crochet Pattern? His cloud-like beard and little button eyes just draw you in. My kids were never really enamoured with Santa, and we never really forced them to sit on Santa’s knee because they always looked terrified of him. Besides, who wants to stand in line with kids for 20 minutes to traumatize your kids for an awful over-priced picture? My kids were slightly intrigued by the idea of the right jolly old elf, so I slightly regret not snapping a photo of them looking onto the spectacle of Santa visiting from a distance. I’m sure they would have been much more interested in a stuffed version of Santa like this cute little amigurumi doll.

Mr Pinny Crochet Amigurumi Pattern is a super cute, sweater-clad penguin doll ready to grace your Christmas tree with his chipper little face! It’s time for all the cold-weather creatures to come out and adorn our homes with their cuteness! I don’t know, though; do you think this little guy could use a hat? Or a scarf? He looks a little chilly. I think I’d make him a hat, too.

Of course, you don’t need to make Christmas themed Amigurumi to give out as a gift! You can make a stuffed toy that can be enjoyed year-round, like this Milo the Hipster Cat Amigurumi Pattern. What kid doesn’t want a stuffed cat in a hoodie? My kids love this kind of stuff and I’m sure yours would too!

Or if you have a princess-lover on your hands, this Princess Amigurumi Crochet Pattern Bundle would give you all the instructions you need to make a whole collection of princesses! These dolls are so adorable; how much more special will one of these dolls be to the recipient when they know it was made by your loving hands?
