10 Fabulous Handmade Bag Patterns

To schlep or not to schlep, that is the question. What is schlepping? I’m not sure I’ve ever read a formal definition, but when used in context I would define it as “transporting (usually large amounts of) things from one place to another, especially by foot, especially multiple times, especially on vacation.” This is a word that entered my vocabulary via my older sister who, while claiming to despise schlepping of all kinds, tends to be the kind of person who has thought to bring everything you need when you didn’t even know you needed it. I admire her commitment to order and covet her organizational prowess, but just can’t seem to stay on top of the ever-present clutter and chaos invading my own home. But I can crochet little chair socks in a pinch, so it’s kind of a trade-off, ok?

Anyway, this post is dedicated to my sister who hates to schlep. Schlepping is reduced by having great bags to tote your stuff around in (also, by getting a beach-front room at the resort). So check out some of these great handmade handbag patterns you can make to reduce your schlepping, or at least do it in style.

I’ve been enamored with this Mochila Handbag Crochet Pattern for the last couple of weeks. I love the fun cherry/floral vibe paired with the geometric triangles. What a fun handbag, perfect for a boho vibe, getting out and about this summer, walking through town or in the park. I’m totally fascinated to try this tapestry crochet technique because the fabric looks so solid and secure. Once I get myself a set of tunisian crochet hooks (I have my eye on these ones from KnitPicks), I’m going to give this a try. Get this amazing pattern HERE.

If you can finally bring your bags to your market again, then you knitters could make up one of these sweet and lightweight Pike Place Market Bag Knitting Patterns to schlep your vegetables home. This little bag will fit easily in your purse and then expand to fit all your fabulous market finds and haul them home. Make it from washable cotton yarn and you can wash and reuse this lovely bag over and over. Find this sweet pattern HERE.

Don’t hoard all that handmade goodness for yourself, though. You can make this adorable Panda Purse Crochet Pattern for one of your littles (or yourself, I don’t judge). I don’t know what it is with my kids, but it seems to take them a while to get the hang of bags to haul their stuff in. The littlest will stumble his way from the house to the truck, tripping over his blanket, grabbing his favourite stuffy, an Etch-a-Sketch, his computer mouse, a different bag (that for some unknown reason does not contain the other stuff) and a bottle of water. Perhaps if he had an adorable stuffy-like bag, he would put it all in there (doubtful… but one can try!) Maybe it will work for your kid. Get this adorable pattern HERE.

By now we should all know how much I love lemons. I love the flavour of tart lemonade and the bright vibrant colour of lemons. It might be a bit of overkill (a lot of yellow and lemons have leaked into my wardrobe), but perhaps I’ll make one of these delightful little Lemon Bag Crochet Patterns to go along with some of my adorable yellow attire. Or maybe I’ll just hang it in my bathroom to contain a few odds and ends. If you want to make one yourself, you can get this cute pattern HERE.

I love the sophistication of this Bryce Bag by Lakeside Loops Crochet Pattern. I love the subtle colour blocking and the crocheted rope handles. This pattern comes in 2 sizes, so you can make a matching one for your little one. The gorgeous pattern has such a lovely simplicity to it with the single crochet stitch pattern crocheted in the round. And the colour options are endless! Stripes and colour blocking. So easily customizable! This should absolutely be your next project! Buy the pattern HERE.

Check out Stephanie’s new Camellia Tote Bag Crochet Pattern! Don’t you just love the different simple stitch patterns joined together in this adorable new tote bag? I love this lovely subtle mustard colour pictured here, but if mustard isn’t your thing, there are many more fantastic colours of Lionbrand 24/7 Cotton to choose from. Get the pattern by going to THIS LINK. Or pick up the kit from Lionbrand which includes the pattern and all the yarn you need.

I’m absolutely in love with this Boho Tote Bag Crochet Pattern! I love the tassel and the sling feel of this bucket purse. Perfect for the beach or just a super relaxed beach accessory. Pair this gorgeous tote with a pair of cut-off jeans, your favourite breezy tank and a large straw sunhat for a fun summer outfit. For a more sturdy and simple bag, check out this Simple Beauty Market Bag Crochet Pattern. You can schlep all your odds and ends in this gorgeous bag made with a cross stitch single crochet for a night tight fabric. Haul your crochet hooks and projects in this adorable tote or it’s sturdy enough to carry a bottle of wine! Don’t forget to add a beautiful custom leatherette tag to add that touch of professional flair to your handmade items. Find the pattern by clicking HERE.

Don’t worry, knitters: I haven’t forgotten about you (but seriously, learn to crochet because it is all kinds of awesome). If knitting is your thing–or even if it’s not totally your thing–then even a beginner knitter can handle this gorgeous and simple Drawstring Backpack Knitting Pattern. Patterns with simple stitch patterns like this one are so approachable for new knitters. I love it when you can surprise a beginner with a project idea that isn’t just a hat or scar (nothing wrong with hats, but hey, you’ve only got one head!) This backpack is just fabulous and you’ll get to say over and over again, “Thanks, I made it.” And can we just say how much of a mood this photo is. Like, I want to go to there. Get the pattern going to THIS LINK.

And we shan’t leave you knitters with only a backpack, you can also join the relaxed crew with this super chill Everyday Knit Bag Pattern. Haul your towel and dry clothes to the beach and swing this cute tote over your shoulder for an easy vibe that just screams summer. Make it in all kinds of stripes or solids to fit any outfit or look you’re going for. Find this pattern HERE.

I hope you’ve found a lovely bag pattern here to haul all your stuff so you can reduce the dreaded schlepping, especially summer schlepping, which is sure to be sweaty and cutting into your valuable relaxing time. No need to schlep if you can haul it all in one trip! Grab one of these great patterns today or pin it for later.

Summer Makes

Yesterday was a perfect summer day in Edmonton. A perfect day to spend outdoors in the garden! It was super calm and sunny, hardly any mosquitoes. I finally got to replacing the wood chips around my garden, which pretty much took the entire (work) day. It feels good to have that done and it was glorious to spend the day outside since I’ve been spending so many of my days indoors due to the rain, as well as working and working on our house! After I had finished working and took a lovely bath, I spent part of the evening sitting on our deck, enjoying a drink, some chill music and some knitting. So, I decided to collect a bunch of patterns for you to consider making this summer, for chill evenings on the deck, and relaxing mornings with a coffee.

Last night, I was actually working on this cute little Pin Me Up Headband from Knitatude. This is one of her patterns that are free on her blog; it’s a pretty quick knit (though not as quick if you modify it to use sock-weight yarn, like I did-haha) and uses up smaller bits of yarn, which I love!

Chantal has also just released her new Tulip Wrap Tank Knitting Pattern which is an intermediate knit wrap tank top pattern that is written in 9 sizes (up to 5 XL)! I’m so pleased to see pattern designers include more sizes in their patterns. All bodies deserve cute hand-knit items; I’m so proud of the efforts that Chantal and other designers have made to increase their size offerings and make hand-knit patterns more accessible to more people. Get the pattern here.

I just love the simple refined look of this Ribbed V-neck cropped tank top knitting pattern. The delicate ribbing makes this easy/intermediate pattern look more difficult than it is. Made with a fingering weight yarn, it will be perfect to wear in the warmer summer months. This is also a size-inclusive pattern including up to 5XL! Get the pattern here.

For an even easier pattern, this Basic Bralette Knitting Pattern is rated “Easy peasy.” Love that. Super cute and quick knit made with a worsted weight yarn, it knits up quickly into a cute and sexy little bralette. Get the pattern here.

For a summer knit tank top that is more work-appropriate, but just as easy of a knit, check out this Silver Spring Knit Tank Top Pattern. You could easily wear this to the office (if that’s where you’re allowed to go these days) or throw a denim or leather jacket on it for a night out! Using worsted weight yarn, this pattern is also size-inclusive in 9 sizes all the way up to 5XL! This is a beginner level pattern and if you check out her Etsy listing, she has included a way to get the pattern for free on her blog. A printable pdf is so handy though, so for just a few bucks and to support this creative designer, get the pattern here.

Another Easy Peasy Tank Top Knitting Pattern! This sexy, relaxed knitting pattern is available in 5 sizes, up to 47-inch chest circumference. Perfect for the beach or just relaxing in the back yard, this intermediate pattern is quick and easy and uses baby cotton for a lovely soft and cool drape. Get the pattern here.

This pattern is also size-inclusive, including 15 sizes, from a 22-inch waist to a 60-inch waist! Any size can wear this cute and flirty skirt! Get the pattern here.

Of course, you can always dress yourself head to toe in summer knits with this Beverly Knit Top and Skirt Set Pattern. This cropped knit tee and high-waisted mini-skirt is a fun and flirty coordinated outfit which features a faux cable ribbing and sleek stockinette stitch. This is a beginner-intermediate pattern available in three sizes (small, medium and large). Get the pattern here.

I know this collection of patterns has mostly been for grown women, but I couldn’t resist including this adorable Baby Bloomers with Skirt Knitting Pattern! How sweet would this be on a new little one this summer? The confident beginner can tackle this pattern as it uses just the basic techniques of casting on, knitting, purling, and binding off. Make these bloomers in 4 different sizes, from 3-6 months all the way up to 2 years with or without the adorable skirt! Get the pattern here.

I certainly wouldn’t want to forget the crocheters out there. Under the Sea

It has been a very very wet summer here in Edmonton. So much rain. Nearly every day. It’s making us all feel a little water logged. But you know, you can always look on the bright side and use it as inspiration! So I’ve been thinking about sea creatures a lot lately. Fish of all sorts! I think that knitted and crocheted fish are so fun. So, while we’re maybe stuck indoors because of the rain, we can make some lovely amigurumi sea creatures! I hope you enjoy this fun collection of patterns.

Of course, immediately when I think of Under the Sea, I think of Ariel the Mermaid from Disney’s Little Mermaid. This adorable Amigurumi Mermaid Crochet Pattern is a sweet nod to Ariel, while still having a unique and decidedly Green Frog Crochet style. Love this sweet doll pattern!

Of course, where would Ariel be without her faithful friend, Flounder? So, you certainly can forget to make one of these adorable Yellow Flounder Fish Crochet Patterns! This would be great toy for the sibling of a Little Mermaid lover. I know the little brothers always loved to play and be part of what the big sister loved. This is such an adorable flounder amigurumi pattern. I can’t wait to make one!

Everyone loves dolphins! Dolphins are such smart creatures and this Daphne the Dolphin Amigurumi Crochet Pattern would make such a unique stuffed toy to give to that special dolphin loving kid! This little dolphin will work up in just a few hours of beginner crocheting stitches! It’s a great contender for a first amigurumi project.

Let’s not forget the knitters in the bunch. Many times there are not a lot of options for knitted toys. Crochet is my preferred yarn craft for making stuffed animals, but this Finding Nemo Inspired Clown Fish Knitting Pattern is a great likeness to the clown fish from Finding Nemo! Fun bright orange and white and black stripes make this sweet stuffy very recognizable to the Finding Nemo fan in your life!

We can’t forget Dory (even if she can forget us)! This Dory Blue Tang Fish Amigurumi Knitting Pattern is another great knitting pattern for the Finding Nemo and Finding Dory series fans. Such a fun little throw pillow/stuffed animal fan for the underwater themed room or for the kid who is still a big fan.

Of course, if you’re going to recreate Finding Nemo, you definitely need Nemo’s aquarium friends. This IndoPacific Reef Fish and Coral Set of Knitting Patterns is the perfect pattern to make all your favourite aquarium fish from Finding Nemo, plus this bonus coral! So fun. If you have a real aquarium and you’ve had trouble keeping fish alive or can’t be bothered with the maintenance, you can totally make your own set of aquarium sea creatures to populate your aquarium and never have to clean a fish tank again!

“Fish are friends, not food” That’s what this Shark Toy Knitting Pattern reminds me of. His big toothy grin is both hilarious and frightening. You’ve got to have just the right recipient for this hilarious knitted stuffed toy, but I think there are plenty of funny characters in our lives that would know just what to do with this toothy grinned shark!

For a less menacing stuffed toy fish knitting pattern, check out this sweet Piranha toy fish knitting pattern! It has a zipper for its teeth! And an adorable under bite! How fun is that? I love this sweet one made in purple and pink, but your can knit yours in any colour you please!

Of course, you don’t have to just make stuffed animals to celebrate an under the sea theme! You can make one of these Molly Mermaid Baby Photo Prop Set Crochet Patterns for the new little expected one in your circle and have a lovely little photo shoot with your newest little mermaid!

Or for even more fun and functional funkiness, make one of these conversation-starting Magikarp Pouch Crochet Patterns and carry around a little wristlet packed with your necessities. How fun would this be when you’re a little more dressed up, but are carrying this whimsical little pouch?

Or if you just need to carry around something smaller (a key, perhaps?), make one of these little Crochet Mermaid Tail Pouch Necklace Pattern! A little nod to mermaids and sea creatures with this cute little fishy tail! Hold some spare change, a lip balm or a special trinket close to your heart in this adorable little pouch necklace!

This Campervan Travels Day at the Beach Cushion Crochet Pattern might be as close as most of us are getting to under the sea these days. A little nod to the beach and the ocean, as we dream of travelling again. Make up one of these cute pillows while you wait out your storm.

I hope you enjoyed this round up of under the sea inspired knit and crochet patterns. Which one will you make today! Pick up a pattern today or pin it for later!

Life Given You Lemons? Make Lemon Crafts!

You know what they say: When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! Or lemon-inspired crafts! I’m on a bit of a lemon kick these days. I actually love the actual fruit. I love to have a wedge of lemon squeezed in my water… delicious! But I also love all the pretty lemon things. I want to add a bit of a pop of lemon to my new bathroom, so I’ve been exploring lemon crafts to include (and also, I get wandering a little bit, so some of these are definitely not suitable for the bathroom). I hope you enjoy this lemon-inspired crafty round up!

I just love this impressive Lemon Tea Cosy crochet pattern! The pile of lemons on top is so real-looking with their little stem end! And I love the subtle little nod to experienced crocheters who would recognize the stitch in the body of the tea cosy as the lemon peel stitch. Super cute. It would look so fun in my kitchen!

Or check out this super great vintage set of lemon patterns for the kitchen! A rug, potholders, stool covers, and placemats. What a fun set of patterns. I love the simple in the round design, but with the little teardrop shape of the lemon! Such a fun pattern idea! Great vintage lemony vibe!

You don’t just have to decorate with lemons, you can make knitwear, as well! Check out this adorable lemon knitting hat pattern! This cute little hat may look a little complicated, but there’s just some simple shaping at the crown to give it that lemony profile and a little stem and leaf to top it off. It would make a great gender-neutral baby shower gift and comes in 4 sizes: 0-3 months, 6 months, 12 months and 2T.

For a slightly different profile for a darling Lemon Hat knitting pattern, you could try this one. Which one do you prefer1? I like the rolled rim of the second one, but I think either one would make an adorable baby gift!

Or you can crochet a cute little lemon treasure cake! I don’t think the photos do justice to this stunning piece of art! How fun would it be for a little girl to have a cute little lemon cake decoration, but to be able to fill it with her little treasures!? What if that little girl was in her 40s… that wouldn’t be so bad, right? Love this adorable crochet pattern!

On a more practical note, this Lemonade and Limeade Crochet Coaster Pattern is a fun and summery crochet pattern to rest your lemonade and keep it from sweating all over your furniture!

One of the options for decor in my bathroom is a small piece of embroidery. I’ve never been the most avid embroidery fan, but I do love the look of some of the options out there these days, like this Lemons Cross Stitch Pattern. I think it would look sweet hanging in my new bathroom (still not done yet: working madly!)

I think I like this pretty little Lemon Tree Embroidery Pattern even more though. I love the pretty flowers and the different stitches included here. The beauty of a pdf pattern like this is that you can buy it and download it and get working on it if you already have the supplies in your craft room!

I also found this super cool C2C graph for a lemon slice blanket. I love the close-up and modern feel of this lemon. C2C stands for corner to corner, which means you start in the corner and work through the graph diagonally is not something I have done much of, but it does kind of interest me. Perhaps when I’m up and ready again for another big project! I tell ya, renos take a lot out of a girl!

I’ve been thinking about play food amigurumis in a new way recently. I think they’re so adorable, but my kids are too old to be interested in playing with crocheted food, so I’ve been thinking that perhaps I could insert a sponge in them for filling and make them out of cotton and put them by the sink in the kitchen or the bathroom to clean with. What do you think? I think this Amigurumi Lemon Crochet Pattern would be a perfect candidate for such use. If you have ever done this, please let me know any tips or tricks you have!

Perhaps a whole lemon would be a bit easier to get a handful of suds to clean the dishes in the kitchen? What do you think? Also, this little Lemon crochet pattern is a great deal: under $1.50 CAD (so that’s probably like $1 USD!)

There’s also this super tiny lemon wedge crochet play food amigurumi pattern! It looks like it’s almost as small as a real lemon wedge! This designer has such mad crochet skills! What a great-looking pattern! It uses a 1.4 mm crochet hook (which is pretty small!), but look at the final result! This would make such a fun addition to a crochet play food set!

These adorable lemon slice crocheted pillow patterns would make a fun addition to any outdoor space! I love bright and cheery deck decor, so I think I could easily add one of these cushions to my deck! What a fun idea. It could be a great addition to a kids’ bed as well.

And I just had to include this darling Lemon-inspired crocheted doll pattern! I love everything about this sweet little doll, including her lime wedge pony-tail holders, her fun pigtails and adorable little smile! This sweet little doll would make a lovely handmade gift and looks like a ton of fun to make!

I hope you enjoyed this round up of crafty lemon-themed patterns. Pick up a pattern and get crafting today or pin it for later!

Make for Mother’s Day

Since we’re all staying home these days and there are no soccer and no basketball practices or games or concerts to attend, you might find yourself with plenty of time on your hands. There are also not as many stores open, so there’s never been a more perfect time to consider making a gift for your mom this year! And hey, if your mom isn’t around anymore or if your mom isn’t really the person you celebrate, I hope you have a gramma or an auntie or another respected, life-giving woman in your life to celebrate at this time of year. I’ve got a great collection of patterns for you to choose from to make this a fantastic and memorable Mother’s Day, even if it might be on lock-down.

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

Probably the mom in your life has all the awesome rugs she needs. But I could totally find a place for this Modern Scandinavian Design Crochet Rug! I’ve been wanting to make a rug for a while and I have some ideas in the works… but in the mean time, I might check out this fun pattern. What do you think? Would your mom love this rug?

Maybe your mom is a bit more whimsical and would enjoy a smaller fun little rug made from this Pavo the Peacock Mat Crochet Pattern? I love the fuzzy yarn used int he sample on the feathers. It really adds a touch of extra. This adorable little mat would look sweet in a baby’s room or just anywhere you’d want to add that extra little bit of whimsy!

My mom’s been wanting me to make her a tea cozy for a while now (I promise, mom, I’ve totally been thinking about it… I just haven’t got quite the right thing yet). I’m not sure this is what my mom would be looking for, but this cute Sweater Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern is adorable and would totally keep your tea cozy! (Cosy, cozy? What do you say? I’m cool either way. I’m Canadian like that though.)

I don’t know if there’s always room for another pillow, but if there’s not, it’s a good time to cycle a new one in! This Chunky Bobble Crochet Pillow Pattern would make an adorable and quick to crochet gift for your mom this year. There are so many cute pillow patterns out there, I’m having a hard time deciding what to make. I used to be much more anti-throw-pillow, but much to my mother in law’s delight, pillows have grown on me a little more. I still don’t love a ton of them on the bed because you can’t sleep with all those pillows on the bed and then where do you put them? What a hassle. And honestly, our bed doesn’t get made nearly as often as I would like, so then there’d be pillows all over the room most of the time. Ain’t nobody got room for that.

See how I’m having such a tough time deciding on a pillow to make? Check out this adorable Dahlia Pillow Crochet Pattern! This mustard colour is my jam (I don’t really like jam… certainly not as much as I like the phrase “my jam,” but I digress). This pillow would look fantastic in my sitting room, with my mustard yellow chairs. Would your mom like this?

Or maybe your mom would be more into a Crochet Fern Pillow? If you can’t decide between one of these two beauties (the dahlia one and this one), you can get them both in a bundle for a deal. I think they go together great and would be a lovely change for spring!

Moving away from the decor options, perhaps your mom would like this easy-wearing Park City Poncho Crochet Pattern. If all you know how to do is granny stitch, this project would be a great pattern to branch out into garments. Simple construction, simple stitch, stunning result. I love a beginner crochet pattern, even though I can make more advanced projects. Sometimes the simple ones are more impressive… and wearable!

Is your mom a hot mama? When we can go to the beach again and go on warm weather vacations, this Crochet Dress Pattern makes a gorgeous beach cover up, perfect for the resort! For now, I guess it’ll have to do for around the house and lounging around the backyard.

One of the things my mom likes is swans. I’m not sure this Clara the Swan amigurumi pattern is exactly what she’d be looking for because I’m not really sure where she’d put it. Maybe in her office to bring a little bit of joy. But it sure is a sweet little amigurumi!

This Crochet Swan Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern might find a place more easily in my mom’s house. I love this tapestry crochet pattern from the shop Manuska. It would also make a very fun and classy wall decor for a baby’s room, don’t you think? So cute.

Well… here it is… my mom wants a tea cozy and she loves swans. So here it is: the Swan Tea Cozy Pattern! hahahahahaha! I don’t know… I just… can’t. The placement of the spout…. oh man! It’s just so weird. That said, it’s a really well-done pattern, clever and it really looks like a swan… but with a weird… appendage. What about you? Would you make this? Is it good for a laugh?

If you’re not the maker type, Etsy has some great gift options from small businesses in their Mother’s Day gift guide. There’s still time to grab something that’s ready to go. Buy small right now. Many people are depending on their side gigs in difficult times. Your purchases mean so much more to makers and designers than they do to Amazon or Walmart. So pick up one of these cute patterns and get making today or pin it for later!

Spring Home Patterns

We’ve finally climbed out of the bone-chilling winter temperatures (and only a month into spring! #whydoilivehere?), so it’s definitely time to celebrate! It’s time to open the windows, enjoy some fresh air, and take walks without a coat (sweaters still required). And it’s definitely time to bring some spring life into our homes. Here in Edmonton, garden centres and greenhouses have been declared essential services during this pandemic(#agree), so I’m so excited that we will be able to get some plants since I didn’t start any seeds this year. There’s still some time, so I might still get to it. Maybe tomorrow afternoon…

Anyway, let’s bring some spring indoors! We still have some chilly evenings ahead and since we’re hunkered down so much, we have some time to freshen up our indoors with some lovely handmade spring decor! Check out these patterns to get making today!

Bring some homey-ness to your plants with a Crochet Planter Pattern. Warm up your plants and add some cohesiveness to your home decor. I know I have a bunch of mis-matched planters around my house, so wrapping them all up in a matching set of crocheted planters like this would be perfect!

I probably wouldn’t hang this outdoors, as I don’t think the yarn would hold up to the elements very well, but it is a lovely way to bring a hint of spring into your home!

I know I usually focus on fibre arts here, but there are so many crafts worth trying. This French Beaded Crocus Pattern is a beautiful introduction into bead-work. What a lovely looking project to try! Have you ever tried beading like this? So neat!

What better way to breathe life into your home than making one of these Trinity Macrame Plant Hanger Pattern to hang your plants. This is definitely a 70’s throwback, but macrame is vintage and very trendy right now. So many fun ways to hang plants! I remember doing macrame in Girl Guides when I was a child. And I also made a lot of friendship bracelets in my early twenties, which uses some of the same knot techniques used in macrame.

I love this modern take on macrame. And I might even be able to find a place for this Macrame Planter Hanger Pattern for the wall… maybe in my bathroom upstairs… Or perhaps in the bathroom down here when we get around to doing that.

Spring Sweater Patterns

While technically “spring is here,” it is currently snowing here in Edmonton. While it’s not unusual for it to snow here this time of year, it is getting a little wearisome. I quite love springtime when it’s cooperating, though. I love the longer days, the warmer weather, the grass emerging and turning green from under its cover of winter snow. I love planting things and getting outside again. I can hardly wait for those things! But while it still snows here, I may as well think about the indoor activities of knitting and crocheting while I look forward to what I will wear in the coming warmer months ahead. Will you join me? Here’s a collection of 10 spring sweater patterns for you to choose from to make while we anticipate soon being about to wear them outside!

Cuddly Creatures

I’m sure we could all use a little extra comfort right now. A crocheted (or knit!) cuddly creature is the perfect thing to make to get a feeling of accomplishment with only a few hours of work (well, depending on the pattern). Smaller amigurumis (crocheted stuffed toys) can come together in one to three hours. It’s so fun to watch your yarn turn into a cuddly little friend. What better gift to give to your child or grandchild than a handmade stuffed toy for a little bit of extra comfort? Check out these adorable amigurumi patterns to make! (There’s even a couple of knitting patterns in here!)

One of my favourite amigurumi designers, Manuska, has created this beautiful Maya Angelou Crochet Doll Pattern, celebrating a strong and accomplished woman. What a lovely way to introduce a young woman to this excellent female role model!

Of course, if you’re all about the animals, this Pug Shpuntic Dog Amigurumi Crochet Pattern is a hilarious, cartoony amigurumi pattern that you simply must try! I love all his folds and crazy eyes!

If you’ve stumbled on this post with not much time until Easter, this Charlie the Chick Crochet Pattern is a small pattern that works up quickly with a small amount of yarn. If you’re looking for a free version, it’s available here on the Yarn Society website.

For a different style of bird pattern, check out the Blu the Bird Amigurumi Crochet Pattern. Such a cute little birdie pattern. It’s also available for free on the Yarn Society website by clicking here.

For my knitters, I haven’t forgotten about you! It’s just not as easy to find cute knitted toys. The visibility of increases and decreases in knitting just doesn’t lend itself as well to amigurumi. But these Moss the Sheep Knitting Patterns are an exception! Fluff and Fuzz has quite a few adorable amigurumi knitting patterns, so if you’re not interested in learning crochet, check out the great variety of knitting patterns in the Fluff and Fuzz shop.

This one was another favourite from Fluff & Fuzz, the Berry Bear knitting pattern. In this fuzzy yarn, you can’t tell it’s knit at all! It looks so good! My kids would love one of these adorable scruffy-looking stuffed bears.

I know that some of you may have difficulty getting out to get supplies if you’re either quarantined or social distancing or if stores have temporarily closed in your area. Most online retailers continue to ship and in my city, Michaels is still offering curbside pick up. It’s not quite the same as making a trip into a store and squishing all the yarn, but Knitpicks and Lionbrand Yarn have a wide selection of yarn and other supplies that you can order and have shipped to you if you need some supplies to make these cute amigurumi toys.

Which of these adorable amigurumis will you get to work on today? Pick up a pattern or pin it for later!

Calming Crafts (Free Patterns!)

So, it feels weird to just go about my business sharing my favourite crafts and encouraging you to get making something right now, but with all the weirdness of the world right now and the recommendation of social distancing, crafts are EXACTLY what we should be doing. Studies have shown that knitting can reduce anxiety and depression and crocheting can improve your sense of calm and give you a project to help pass some of your newfound downtime. But I also know that this is a time of great uncertainty for a lot of people, as many people are experiencing reduced work hours (and pay) and have uncertainty about the security of their jobs and income. So today I want to share some great FREE and discounted craft resources for you!

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

Knit Scamander Scarf free knitting pattern for this Hufflepuff scarf, as seen on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them by New Scamander. This pattern is available for free from craft evangelist. Check out the free pattern round up! #newtscamanderscarf #freescarfpattern #hufflepuffscarf #knittingpattern #freeknittingpattern #freepattern #craftevangelist #knitscamander

Let me just give you a little glimpse into pattern designing and the business side of things: knit and crochet designers (among other pattern designers) put a lot of work into designing, writing and testing patterns. Those that offer them for free on their blogs can earn some ad revenue from your traffic and they often offer a pdf printable pattern for a small fee, often on Etsy or Ravelry. As I’ve disclosed, I’m an affiliate and so I get a little bit of commission bit if you make a purchase through one of my Etsy links. If you need free patterns, please be sure to access the designer’s website and give them the traffic they need to earn a little bit of ad revenue and if you can afford it (and also because pdf patterns are so handy), please use one of my links to purchase from Etsy, as that’s how the designer earns some money and how I earn a little bit, too (same price for you and it encourages me to keep finding great patterns to share with you). It really is a joy for me to promote patterns on Etsy because as someone with my own (sad) Etsy shop, I know that pattern designers are individuals, mostly women and often moms just trying to earn a little extra from home for their families, not giant corporations. And I’m glad to support and promote them in their creative endeavours.

First of all, there’s my local knit and crochet celebrity, Stephanie from All About Ami. Stephanie has nearly all of her patterns available for free on her blog. Here she is modelling her Daylight Cardigan, which is free on her blog or available on Etsy here. This cardigan is made with Lionbrand Chainette yarn and is available as a kit from Lionbrand. Lionbrand is running a promotion right now with 25% off all kits with the code KITS25.

Some of my favourite patterns from Stephanie include her amigurumi patterns. Every year, she designs a new one for Chinese New Year, which is really awesome. This year is the Year of the Rat, so she’s got this adorable Chinese New Year Rat amigurumi pattern. It’s available here for free on her blog and also available as a printable pdf pattern on Etsy.

Another great resource for free crochet patterns is Whistle & Ivy. You can get this great Tartan Plaid Slouchy Hat pattern for free on her blog. Bethany has so many great buffalo plaid crochet patterns too, but also crochet patterns of all kinds! She’s very prolific! I learned to crochet buffalo plaid from this hat pattern. If you want to purchase one of her ad-free patterns, they’re available here on Etsy.

Beyond buffalo plaid, Whistle & Ivy also has this beautiful crocheted flip flop pattern for free on her blog here or an ad-free pdf printable pattern here. This is a perfect pattern to work up right now to be ready for the summer weather to come. Some of you can already see the grass where you are (unlike me, who still just sees 20 cm of crusty snow covering my garden), so the hope of summer sandals is much more real for you. These flip flops are so cute! I can’t wait for summer!

If you’re just learning to knit or crochet and would like access to hundreds of online classes and crafting resources, Bluprint is offering 14 days of free online classes to new subscribers and 40% off any item this week (ends March 27, 2020).

We Crochet is a new crochet-focussed spin-off company from Knitpicks. They offer some free crochet patterns as well as pattern kits, complete with both the pattern and the yarn, as well as the option to purchase any hooks or other supplies you might need. Check out this cute Floral Tapestry Top, which is a free downloadable pdf pattern! Bonus!

I love Knitpicks for affordable yarn and needles. But did you also know they have free resources for learning to knit? You can learn to Cast On, Knit, Purl and Bind off. There are so many great free resources available on YouTube and blogs. If you have a free resource you’d like to share, please do so in the comments!

Now that we’re talking about Knitpicks, I must say I really do love my Knitpicks interchangeable needles, especially the beautiful wood needles! I have the Caspian Options Short Interchangeable Set, which I love for hats and sleeves. It’s so great to knit in the round without using double-pointed needles. I do also have a set of Caspian Double Pointed Needles, which come in very handy for finer yarns and when decreasing at the top of a hat. I love how all the Options interchangeable sets work with each other, so it’s like Lego, you can use them with all your other sets and mix and match as need be!

Jessica from Mama In A Stitch has a bunch of lovely free knitting patterns and free crochet patterns including this fun Trails End Seamless Poncho. Nearly every knitter and crocheter I know dislikes seaming, so when we see seamless, we’re in love! Get the free pattern here on her blog or the pdf printable version here on Etsy. Check out her Etsy shop for all her pdf downloadable patterns.

Another free pattern that I’ve made a few times and given away (all my kids have one in their rooms) is this No Fuss Fish pattern from Eden Reborn. You can get the free pattern here on the blog or buy a low cost, ad-free, printable pdf pattern here. It makes a super cute gift and really doesn’t take too long to make at all. Check out all of Eden Reborn’s free crochet patterns here.

Since we still have some time before Easter, it’s not too late to make this floppy bunny amigurumi pattern from One Dog Woof. You can find the free pattern here on the blog or an ad-free pdf printable pattern here on Etsy.

Ashleigh from Sewrella also offers a lot of free patterns on her blog. The Crochet Seaside Cardigan is a lovely drapey cardigan that’s perfect for summer. Find the free pattern here on her blog or an ad-free pdf printable pattern on Etsy here.

I recently made one of Ashleigh’s Double Thick Crocheted Potholders from the free pattern here on her blog (get the ad-free pdf printable pattern here on Etsy). I had some cotton yarn for dishcloths leftover from a previous project, so I whipped up one of these babies when I realized Mr Evangelist’s hands don’t really fit in our oven mitts, so that’s why he’s been using my tea towels!!!

Since we’ve been watching all the Great British Baking Show episodes lately, I want to make one of these Double Oven Mitts by Sarah of Ned and Mimi. She’s got the free pattern on her blog and an ad-free pdf printable pattern available for purchase on Ravelry. So pick up some cotton dishie yarn or any other 100% cotton worsted weight yarn and get making one of these lovely double oven mitts today. I have some Lionbrand 24/7 yarn kicking around, so I think that’s what I’m going to use.

If you are looking for a mandala pattern like the one in the pin and the title heading, I have a resource for you, but it’s not for the exact pattern that I have here. I think I ended up guessing my way through this pattern with an image of a partial chart and a photo, so I don’t really have a pattern for it. But there are some similar-looking patterns here from Mollie Makes.

I hope you’re able to make some of these great free patterns while you’re practicing social distancing. Makers, we’re ready for this! We’ve been stockpiling yarn for YEARS! It’s time to put your stash and your skills to use! Take this break from the whirlwind of life and make some beautiful things. It may help calm the anxiety and you could also get a sweater out of it!

Pin this for later so you can find all these great resources when you’re looking for them!
