10 Fabulous Handmade Bag Patterns

To schlep or not to schlep, that is the question. What is schlepping? I’m not sure I’ve ever read a formal definition, but when used in context I would define it as “transporting (usually large amounts of) things from one place to another, especially by foot, especially multiple times, especially on vacation.” This is a word that entered my vocabulary via my older sister who, while claiming to despise schlepping of all kinds, tends to be the kind of person who has thought to bring everything you need when you didn’t even know you needed it. I admire her commitment to order and covet her organizational prowess, but just can’t seem to stay on top of the ever-present clutter and chaos invading my own home. But I can crochet little chair socks in a pinch, so it’s kind of a trade-off, ok?

Anyway, this post is dedicated to my sister who hates to schlep. Schlepping is reduced by having great bags to tote your stuff around in (also, by getting a beach-front room at the resort). Summer Makes

Yesterday was a perfect summer day in Edmonton. A perfect day to spend outdoors in the garden! It was super calm and sunny, hardly any mosquitoes. I finally got to replacing the wood chips around my garden, which pretty much took the entire (work) day. It feels good to have that done and it was glorious to spend the day outside since I’ve been spending so many of my days indoors due to the rain, as well as working and working on our house! After I had finished working and took a lovely bath, I spent part of the evening sitting on our deck, enjoying a drink, some chill music and some knitting. So, I decided to collect a bunch of patterns for you to consider making this summer, for chill evenings on the deck, and relaxing mornings with a coffee.

Last night, I was actually working on this cute little Pin Me Up Headband from Knitatude. This is one of her patterns that are free on her blog; it’s a pretty quick knit (though not as quick if you modify it to use sock-weight yarn, like I did-haha) and uses up smaller bits of yarn, which I love!

Chantal has also just released her new Tulip Wrap Tank Knitting Pattern which is an intermediate knit wrap tank top pattern that is written in 9 sizes (up to 5 XL)! Under the Sea

It has been a very very wet summer here in Edmonton. So much rain. Nearly every day. It’s making us all feel a little water logged. But you know, you can always look on the bright side and use it as inspiration! So I’ve been thinking about sea creatures a lot lately. Fish of all sorts! I think that knitted and crocheted fish are so fun. So, while we’re maybe stuck indoors because of the rain, we can make some lovely amigurumi sea creatures! I hope you enjoy this fun collection of patterns.

Of course, immediately when I think of Under the Sea, I think of Ariel the Mermaid from Disney’s Little Mermaid. This adorable Amigurumi Mermaid Crochet Pattern is a sweet nod to Ariel, while still having a unique and decidedly Green Frog Crochet style. Love this sweet doll pattern!

Of course, where would Ariel be without her faithful friend, Flounder? So, you certainly can forget to make one of these adorable Yellow Flounder Fish Crochet Patterns! Life Given You Lemons? Make Lemon Crafts!

You know what they say: When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! Or lemon-inspired crafts! I’m on a bit of a lemon kick these days. I actually love the actual fruit. I love to have a wedge of lemon squeezed in my water… delicious! But I also love all the pretty lemon things. I want to add a bit of a pop of lemon to my new bathroom, so I’ve been exploring lemon crafts to include (and also, I get wandering a little bit, so some of these are definitely not suitable for the bathroom). I just love this impressive Lemon Tea Cosy crochet pattern! The pile of lemons on top is so real-looking with their little stem end! And I love the subtle little nod to experienced crocheters who would recognize the stitch in the body of the tea cosy as the lemon peel stitch. Super cute. It would look so fun in my kitchen!

Or check out this super great vintage set of lemon patterns for the kitchen! A rug, potholders, stool covers, and placemats. What a fun set of patterns. I love the simple in the round design, but with the little teardrop shape of the lemon! Such a fun pattern idea! Great vintage lemony vibe!

You don’t just have to decorate with lemons, you can make knitwear, as well! Check out this adorable lemon knitting hat pattern! This cute little hat may look a little complicated, but there’s just some simple shaping at the crown to give it that lemony profile and a little stem and leaf to top it off. It would make a great gender-neutral baby shower gift and comes in 4 sizes: 0-3 months, 6 months, 12 months and 2T.

For a slightly different profile for a darling Lemon Hat knitting pattern, you could try this one. Which one do you prefer? I like the rolled rim of the second one, but I think either one would make an adorable baby gift!

One of the options for decor in my bathroom is a small piece of embroidery. I’ve never been the most avid embroidery fan, but I do love the look of some of the options out there these days, like this Lemons Cross Stitch Pattern. I think it would look sweet hanging in my new bathroom (still not done yet: working madly!)

I think I like this pretty little Lemon Tree Embroidery Pattern even more though. I love the pretty flowers and the different stitches included here. The beauty of a pdf pattern like this is that you can buy it and download it and get working on it if you already have the supplies in your craft room!

I also found this super cool C2C graph for a lemon slice blanket. I love the close-up and modern feel of this lemon. C2C stands for corner to corner, which means you start in the corner and work through the graph diagonally is not something I have done much of, but it does kind of interest me. Perhaps when I’m up and ready again for another big project! I tell ya, renos take a lot out of a girl!

I’ve been thinking about play food amigurumis in a new way recently. I think they’re so adorable, but my kids are too old to be interested in playing with crocheted food, so I’ve been thinking that perhaps I could insert a sponge in them for filling and make them out of cotton and put them by the sink in the kitchen or the bathroom to clean with. What do you think? I think this Amigurumi Lemon Crochet Pattern would be a perfect candidate for such use. If you have ever done this, please let me know any tips or tricks you have!

These adorable lemon slice crocheted pillow patterns would make a fun addition to any outdoor space! I love bright and cheery deck decor, so I think I could easily add one of these cushions to my deck! What a fun idea. It could be a great addition to a kids’ bed as well.

And I just had to include this darling Lemon-inspired crocheted doll pattern! I love everything about this sweet little doll, including her lime wedge pony-tail holders, her fun pigtails and adorable little smile! This sweet little doll would make a lovely handmade gift and looks like a ton of fun to make!

Make for Mother’s Day

Since we’re all staying home these days and there are no soccer and no basketball practices or games or concerts to attend, you might find yourself with plenty of time on your hands. There are also not as many stores open, so there’s never been a more perfect time to consider making a gift for your mom this year! And hey, if your mom isn’t around anymore or if your mom isn’t really the person you celebrate, I hope you have a gramma or an auntie or another respected, life-giving woman in your life to celebrate at this time of year. Spring Home Patterns

We’ve finally climbed out of the bone-chilling winter temperatures (and only a month into spring! #whydoilivehere?), so it’s definitely time to celebrate! It’s time to open the windows, enjoy some fresh air, and take walks without a coat (sweaters still required). And it’s definitely time to bring some spring life into our homes. Here in Edmonton, garden centres and greenhouses have been declared essential services during this pandemic(#agree), so I’m so excited that we will be able to get some plants since I didn’t start any seeds this year. There’s still some time, so I might still get to it. Maybe tomorrow afternoon…

Spring Sweater Patterns

While technically “spring is here,” it is currently snowing here in Edmonton. While it’s not unusual for it to snow here this time of year, it is getting a little wearisome. I quite love springtime when it’s cooperating, though. I love the longer days, the warmer weather, the grass emerging and turning green from under its cover of winter snow. I love planting things and getting outside again. I can hardly wait for those things!
