Warm Winter Weather Wear

Well, the winter weather has arrived, at least where I live. It’s not too bad just yet, so don’t mistake my announcement for complaining. But it is definitely time to break out the knit and crochet accessories to keep ears, necks, heads and hands warm this season. If you’re looking for a pattern to make for a gift to give this season or to keep yourself warm this winter, I’ve got a great collection of fashionable knit and crochet accessory patterns for you!

First off, these twisted ear warmers are all the rage this year. Great for keeping your ears warm while not messing up your top knot or ponytail. The River Ear Warmer twisted headband crochet pattern is a great and simple crochet pattern that a beginner could handle. The beauty of these little projects is that they only take a couple of hours and a partial skein of yarn. They make great stash-busting projects!

The Woven Headwarmer crochet pattern has a little more texture and has that lovely bowtie twist to finish it off! Super cute and what a fun pattern to highlight a soft and luscious yarn. Buffalo plaid is still super cute and trendy and it’s so super fun to see three colours of yarn come together to form this fun pattern. Don’t you love the large wooden button on this Buffalo Plaid Crochet Cowl Pattern? I love fun finishing touches like that. It makes a piece look so much more professional!

Here’s another gorgeous cowl to try out: the Triangle Scarf Crochet Pattern is a textured granny-stitch style cowl that would be a great welcome back to crochet project for those whose grannies taught them the simple granny square and that’s all they really remember. This would also be a great pattern to highlight some special yarn you’ve been saving.

Check out the fringe on this June Berry Cowl crochet pattern… with buttons as well! I love the gorgeous texture on this cowl pattern and fringe is so on-trend right now. It’s a great time to get working on this beautiful scarf, for you or for a friend!

If you’ve always wanted to try cables, the Cascades Big Knit Scarf Pattern is a great first cable project. With bulky yarn and just one big braid cable through the scarf, it’s a great project to practice and learn. Just a tip: if you’re just learning, using a light coloured yarn will help you to more easily see your work and make it easier to fix any mistakes.

These chunky mittens look so warm and cozy! My fingerless mittens just aren’t cutting it anymore; I’m going to need to get me some tips!

Don’t worry: I haven’t left the crocheters’ hands out in the cold. The Cadence Mittens crochet mitten pattern is a lovely textured crochet mitten pattern with a cable-like textured stitch to practice something new for crocheters looking for a little more of a challenge.

Now, THIS is a fun hat pattern! I love seeing the animal print that is making its way into knitwear! Check out this super fun Animal Attraction Leopard Print Pompom Hat knitting pattern! What a fun winter accessory!

Handmade Holiday Gifts

It’s go time! November always takes me by surprise. Before November, if I had started thinking about Christmas gifts or making anything, I was so super early and ahead of the game. Once November hits, I always feel behind. It’s stupid, really. But the maker mom in me wants to handmake something for everyone. Besides making everyone some coasters or ornaments, it just isn’t practical to start in November. But just because you can’t make something elaborate for everyone, doesn’t mean that you can’t make something elaborate for someone special. So, I’ve rounded up a group of patterns to make for some beautiful handmade holiday gifts! Check them out and get to work!

Or… here’s the other trick, if you’re starting in November, you can still get a handmade gift made for you! Cardigan Season

It’s sweater weather! Now that the temperatures are dropping in my part of the world, I’ve got sweaters on my body and on the brain! Fall is a great time to cozy up with some yarn and make yourself or someone you love a beautiful handmade cardigan! I love the longer cardigans that can be thrown over a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and you’ve got an instantly classy look that keeps you warm and cozy. I’ve rounded up some great cardigan patterns for you to consider making this season

The Uptown Cardigan from All About Ami is probably one of my favourites; this was my late summer/early fall cardigan project. It’s a super simple knit and if there was a pattern rating system, I would put this one in the category of “Easy to knit while watching Netflix.” It’s lovely working with the delicate Coboo yarn from Lion Brand. It’s a worsted weight yarn that is sooooooo soft and has a lovely drape. Stephanie also recently created this simple Rosewood Cardigan Crochet Pattern, also made with Coboo yarn. It’s similarly styled to the knit version, but for crocheters! This is also offered as a kit from Lion Brand and with 40% off right now, it’s a great time to pick it up!

This chunky cable-knit Braid Cardigan looks like it would work up really quickly with the chunky yarn and mostly garter stitch. And how cozy does it look? I love the cable braid detail.

Do you love the seed stitch? I love the look of it and as a continental knitter, switching between knitting and purling is pretty quick for me. The Autumn Sweater is another easy-level knitting pattern, worked up with chunky yarn, so it would come together quickly. It looks so warm!

Bundle of Baby Booties

It may be due to the birthday of my youngest this month, but I’ve got babies on the brain. Let me be clear, I do not want any more babies on a permanent basis in my house, but I could definitely do with some baby snuggles. And baby booties just might be the most adorable of the handmade items for babies. So, if you have a baby due in your life that you would like to make for, check out this beautiful bundle of baby bootie patterns.

Check out these modern booties, the Taika Boot crochet pattern. These hiking boot-inspired booties would make a lovely pair of slippers for a little baby boy. They would make a great baby shower gift!

For a more sporty bootie, check out this Converse-inspired high top baby booties crochet pattern! I think these would be great for the baby boy or baby girl of a guy friend or relative. I think it’s easy for guys to feel a little left out of the whole baby thing. My husband preferred to dress our kids as little people, instead of as dolls, which took a little adjusting for me with our baby girl, but he always had good taste.

Not entirely forgetting the knitters, this adorable Baby booties knitting pattern is embellished with this cute flower design, I love the double-lined look to add extra cosiness and help keep those booties on baby’s feet! The last thing you want someone to do is to lose one of these adorable handmade slippers out of a stroller or car seat!

Chunky Knit Hats

Cooler temperatures are coming, whether we care to admit it or not. So it’s time to start choosing some patterns, order some yarn and pompoms and get knitting! So here are some fantastic knit hat patterns that will work up quickly and stock your shelves for fall craft fairs (if you do that kind of thing) or start checking people off of that gift list while you make up some of these gorgeous patterns.

Back to School

It’s back to school time again. While my kids are excited and definitely not complaining about their days being full again, the trope that kids are dragging their feet back to school while the parents are celebrating persists. If your kids are wishing the summer would go on and on, I have a few patterns for you that might brighten their spirits while they return to school.

Our Maker Life

Today is Our Maker Life make meet up! I’m so pleased that I was able to get a ticket! It’s in Calgary, which is less than 3 hours’ drive for me, which is also great news! And it happens to be my and Mr Evangelist’s anniversary that day, so he is coming down with me and we are having a little getaway on the side! He’s such a good sport about my maker life… it’s OUR maker life! haha

Anyway, in honour of Our Maker Life, I wanted to highlight the OML 2019 presenters and their patterns! Check out these great designers and pick up one of their fabulous patterns. Support individual makers: their creativity and discipline in putting out incredible designs make this maker life so much more rich!

One of my all-time favourite designers is Stephanie from All About Ami. It was only in the last year or so that I learned she was from Edmonton, just like me! I’m so excited to meet her and hear her speak at OML! She designs beautiful knit and crochet patterns, from amigurumi to garments and bags, baskets, blankets & more! Her pdf patterns are really reasonably-priced, and you can even get them for free on her blog! The pattern above is her new Wildrose Backpack Crochet Pattern, which I’ve been meaning to make, but there’s just so much to make!!!

This Spring Bunnies Crochet pattern is an example of some of her great amigurumi patterns. These would make an adorable baby shower gift or a super sweet handmade Easter gift!

The Midtown Cardigan knitting pattern is a beautiful example of one of her wearable knit designs. I’m thinking I’m going to put this one on the docket to make this fall…

The other keynote speaker for OML 2019 is Chantal from Knitatude. She is from Calgary and I’m super excited to meet her and learn from her as well! She has a whole shop full of great knit garment patterns. I really like the Easy Eyelet Yoke Lite Sweater Pattern above. It looks like a lovely design to wear in warmer months and would layer well for the cooler seasons!

I also love this Cozy Celtic Raglan Cable Knit Sweater. Maybe it’s the gorgeous mustard coloured yarn that it’s made with, but I love the chunky yarn and the cozy jumbo cowl with the cropped body! Super cute!

Chantel’s knit dress patterns are absolutely to die for! This super cute Diamond Knit Dress pattern has made an appearance on my blog before, but it’s so cute, I can’t stop telling you about it!

Canada Patterns

Happy Canada Day! I love this great country we live in and if you’re up for celebrating with some red and white, maple leaves, moose, beavers, sweaters, mountains, and the outdoors, then have I got some patterns for you!

Even in Canada right now, it’s too warm to wear this Oh Canada Maple Leaf Vintage Canadian Style sweater, but it’s not too early to get working on it for fall!

Knit & Crochet for Kids

Kids are going to be out of school for summer soon. And some already are. Do you want to teach your kids to knit or crochet this summer? It’s so great to have the kids looking at something besides screens and keeping busy. Check out some of these great patterns to make for your kids or to teach them to make!
