Gifts for Knitters

If you have a knitter on your list and don’t know what to get them, well let me steer you in the right direction! When you know someone does a craft, sometimes it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the options of things that you don’t know what to do with. Well, I am here to guide you!

A yarn bowl is always a great idea for a lovely gift for a knitter. Many knitters don’t own one yet (even me)! I usually wind a center-pull ball, but a yarn bowl is still a lovely knitting accessory and isn’t this wooden one beautiful?

Here’s another super adorable yarn bowl. Don’t you love this ceramic sheep yarn bowl? So cute.

Unique buttons also make a lovely gift. It’s always great to have an assortment on hand for finishing up a project without having to go shopping for buttons. And sometimes buttons can inspire a project all by themselves. These gorgeous carved wooden bird buttons are adorable and so unique! I love handmade!

These boho painted wooden buttons are another great option, if your recipient are a trendy button option. How fun would it be to give such a simple, but special and thoughtful gift from an independent artisan?

Stitch markers also make a lovely little gift, a perfect little stocking stuffer. Check out these adorable sheep stitch markers… so cute.

Alternatively, if your recipient is more of the minimalist type, these delicate raindrop shaped brass stitch markers are another stitch marker gift.

I have never knit with a knitting ring before, but they look so interesting. If your knitting loved one does a lot of colour-work, then they might like to figure out how to knit or crochet with one of these knitting rings

Almost any knitter would be delighted with some luxurious, wonderfully-coloured yarn. Check out this gorgeous autumn colourway wool yarn from Fashion Touch Supplies.

Or a full kit full of yarn enough for a complete shawl in a teal to browns. So many knitters will have spent the pre-Christmas season making gifts for others. What a delight it would be to be given supplies to make a lovely treat for themselves!

I hope you find these suggestions helpful for shopping for the knitter in your life! Pin it on Pinterest to share with your friends or find it later!

Christmas for Baby

Are you crafting for a baby this Christmas? Baby items are great beginner projects because they’re so small. (And adorable!) You can start to get the feel for how a knit sweater is constructed or practice a new crochet stitch with a baby pattern and oh-my-goodness if some of the patterns are THE.CUTEST.EVER.

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

First of all, booties. How much do you love this crochet pattern for Converse-inspired baby booties? So.much.cuteness. It even comes with a printable box template that you can print and give as a gift! I love that.

If you were thinking of more Christmas-themed booties, then you should make these adorable crocheted reindeer booties! How sweet would these be on the baby in front of the Christmas tree? Perfect!

Update: unfortunately, it looks like this pattern is no longer available. Check out these other Crochet Reindeer Booties Crochet Patterns for some good options.

Of course a handmade stuffed animal is another adorable baby gift idea. How sweet is this little reindeer crochet pattern? I love her little pull along sled! So cute! It would make great holiday decor or a lovely baby gift (just make sure you use some safety eyes and not buttons).

Update: unfortunately, this little pattern is no longer available. There are some other crochet reindeer patterns here if you’re interested in looking for some options.

Or maybe one of these adorable Christmas-themed amigurumi dolls is more your style? This bundle pack of North Pole patterns is a great deal! I think the elf is my favourite!

If it’s baby’s first Christmas, baby needs a stocking, right? Baby should start life right with a handmade crocheted stocking from you! I’m quite fond of this crocheted stocking pattern with this tree design. Simple and unique! It looks like it’d be easy enough to make one for the whole family!

Or maybe since a baby is small, baby just needs a teensy-weensy, itty-bitty super cute little stocking. Actually, these are for decoration, but wouldn’t they also make a fantastic advent calendar? You could totally make your own and it would be fantastic!

Less Christmas-themed, but still a perfect Christmas gift for a new baby is this Eve Romper All in One Knitting Pattern. Perfect for the beginner, this garter-stitched romper would make an adorable outfit for baby photos. I love the rustic wooden buttons!

If you’re still thinking about good photo props, this sweet elf stocking cap crochet pattern is a great idea. So cute.

I also love these patterns for these crocheted stuffed letters. What a beautiful way to introduce a child to the love of reading! You could make just a couple of their initials, a name, or make the whole set as a fun learning toy.

Of course, we don’t always have time to make handmade gifts, which is another reason that Etsy is so great. I didn’t find a pattern for this super adorable little lamb hat, but that means you can just get BabaMoon to make one for you! Wouldn’t it be so perfect for a Christmas nativity play at church? Oh-my-goodness I could just eat this little lamb up!

I hope you now have some great ideas for Christmas baby gifts to make. Pin it for later or to share with your friends!

Cosy Cocoon Cardigans

Cozy or cosy? Whichever way you spell it, it spells warm! I’m having a tough time adjusting to the change in temperature this year (especially in my office where someone is randomly turning on the AC!), so I’ve been looking for a cardigan I can keep at my desk to deal with the fluctuating temperatures and stay toasty while I work! I’ve collected a few patterns that I like here. These cocoon cardigans have been very popular and they look super warm. What do you think? Which one will you put on your needles/hook?

I really like the woven stitch detail on the cuffs and edging of this Celtic Cocoon Sweater Crochet Pattern from byaccessorize. This looks super cozy for warming up at work.

Then there this Oversized Scoop Sweater knitting pattern from bromefields. It looks like a super easy knitting pattern that I could make while I watch tv. That’s the beauty of knitting… if it’s an easy enough pattern, you don’t even have to look at it for a good chunk of the time. I once knit a scarf for my brother in law while I read a book!

If you are relatively new to crochet and all you remember is a granny square that your granny taught you, you could try this Granny Cocoon Shrug crochet pattern by Rove Handmade. This might be too “airy” for my needs though. But it’s super stylish and straight-forward if you’re looking for a nice accessory.

This easy knitting pattern for a cocoon cardigan from Knitty Sunny looks like it would also be an easy knit. One of my favourite things about easy knitting patterns is that when you are an intermediate or advanced knitter, these projects look SOOO good. Sometimes I stretch myself by knitting something complicated. Sometimes I knock it out of the park and knit something easy that looks incredible.

This beautiful cable-knit Silver Cocoon knitting pattern from Bummbul looks cozy and lovely as well. Tell me, which one would you choose? Or maybe I’ll come up with my own pattern…

Later edit: I did come up with my own pattern! Check out my Free Crysalis Cardigan Knitting Pattern!

So Many Fingerless Mittens!

Does anyone else have frozen mousing hand syndrome? I mean, maybe I need an ergonomics assessment so I can figure out ways to get some warm blood flowing to my hands, but for now I’m trying to decide on a pair of fingerless mittens to make so that I can keep up my computer-related work while keeping my hands warm! (And even crochet with them on!!! Bonus!) I’ve found a bunch, so I hope you’re prepared for a big list. There are so many! How do I decide?!

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

Whistle and Ivy has this lovely pattern for a lacy pair of crocheted fingerless mittens. They look like they’d be quick and easy to crochet up and I could have my hands warm by this evening! (You can also get the pattern for free on her website here.)

I also like this simple crochet pattern for a stylish pair of fingerless mittens with an adorable button accent. I like the finishing detail on the top and bottom of these mittens, so I’d be really interested to get the pattern to see what method yarngodess used to get that finish! It’s really subtle, but very lovely!

If you prefer a crocheted wrist warmer pattern with a little more flair, you should check out these Long Dragon Scale gloves from Happy Seal Design. The dragon scale stitch is a lovely way to embellish any garment. And I also like the look of using a self-striping yarn, as shown in the picture to add another layer of interest.

Speaking of wrist warmers with flair, how about a pattern with some humour, too? These fun fingerless hedgehog mitts are super fun and would make anyone smile.

As much as I love to crochet, finished items tend to be a little bulkier, so knit wrist warmers can be much more pleasant to wear while you work. If you’re not a knitter, or you just plain don’t have time to knit a pair before you need your hands warmed, you can purchase a pair of these handmade Knitting Gloves from Suzann61. I love the beautifully embroidered flowers on this delicate, but simple pair of fingerless mittens! Gorgeous!

Here is another slim fitting and delicate looking pattern for these Wishbone Mitts. I love the cable knit detail along the back of them to add an extra layer of interest to an otherwise simple knit gloves pattern. The designer of this pattern has an Etsy shop full of lovely and classi knitting patterns you should definitely check out if you love knitting!

If you’re looking for a more whimsical knitting pattern AND maybe you’re a football fan AND maybe you’re a loom-knitter, you could make this pair of Loom-Knit Football Themed Fingerless Mittens.

Of course, if you’re looking to knit a pair of fingerless mittens as a gift, this adorable Christmas Heart Fingerless Mittens Knitting Pattern by Little Pickle Knits would be a lovely quick knit handmade gift for the little girl (or boy: hearts are for everyone!) in your life!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There are also some great-looking free patterns out there. I have my eye on this pair of Wannabe Vintage Mitts on Ravelry!

There’s also this lovely pattern for cabled Fingerless Gloves by Crazy Hands. They look quite warm and lovely!

Well, that’s about all I have time to show you right now, but if you want some more ideas, follow my Pinterest Knit and Crochet: Mittens board because I’m always posting there! So many great ideas!!! Choose one today or Pin it for later!

Knit Scamander Scarf

It’s my first pattern! I finally did it! I created my own pattern! Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve made many things without a pattern and have modified others’ patterns to suit my yarn or my tastes, but this is the first time that I’ve written it all down and have prepared something that someone else might actually be able to make. So, here it is! It’s free for you! If you would like a printable PDF version of this pattern, it is available in my Etsy shop for a small fee.

Free knitting pattern for this Newt Scamander Scarf from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them! Perfect handmade gift idea for the Harry Potter fan! #craftevangelist #freepattern #knitting #knitpattern #pattern #scarf #potterhead #harrypotter #newtscamander #fantasticbeasts #yarn #crafts

This scarf is based on the scarf worn by Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I created this pattern for my son who is going as Newt Scamander for Halloween this year. Halloween is such a great time to get crafty!

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

The Knit Scamander Scarf is knit in a rib pattern with a bulky yarn so it knits up quickly and lays flat. I used Loops & Threads Charisma. This is a bulky yarn (5) if you need to find a suitable replacement.

Materials

  • Main Colour: 2 (100 g) balls Loops & Threads Charisma in Charcoal (you will only need about 40 g of the second ball).
  • Contrasting Colour: 1 (100 g) ball Loops & Threads Charisma Heather in Gold (Bulky)

Tools

Abbreviations

  • MC: Main Colour
  • CC: Contrasting Colour
  • K: Knit
  • P: Purl
  • K2togR: Knit 2 stitches on right needle together

Pattern

  1. Cast on 22 stitches in Charcoal (MC)
  2. Row 1: K1 P1 across (22 stitches). Turn.
  3. Row 2: Slip first stitch purlwise, P1, *K1 P1 across (22 stitches). Turn.
  4. Row 3-14: Repeat Row 2. Turn.
  5. Row 15: Switch to Gold (CC), leaving the tail of both colours to be woven in later. Repeat Row 2. Cut MC from ball of yarn, leaving a tail to weave in later. Tie joining ends together with a half knot.
  6. NOTE: When changing colours, continue to slip the first stitch of the row, which will be in the colour of the previous stripe. Once you the ends are tightened up at the colour-changes, the stripes will look more even and not carry over into the next stripe.
  7. Row 16-22: Repeat Row 2
  8. Row 23-34: Switch to Charcoal, continue in the rib pattern (Repeating Row 2) for 12 rows.
  9. Gold stripes should be 8 rows. Charcoal stripes should be 12 rows. The first and last Charcoal stripes are 14 rows instead of 12.
  10. Continue in this pattern until you have 12 Gold stripes.
  11. Final Charcoal stripe: continue in pattern for 13 rows.
  12. To bind off: Slip first stitch purlwise, P1, K2togR, *K1, K2togR, P1, K2togR. Repeat from * to end. This creates a stretchy bind off very similar to a long tail cast on. Cut end and weave in all tails.

Fringe

Cut 20 strands of CC 12 inches long and 24 strands of MC. Using 2 strands of CC and your crochet hook, fold yarn in half and pull through the centre of the scarf. Distribute 4 other CC tassels evenly along the same edge, two on each side, with space for MC tassels between them. There should be a tassel in the MC on each end, with 5 CC tassels alternating across.

Pro tip: Trim the tassels of a scarf with a rotary cutter for a quick job with a consistent length! #craftevangelist
Pro Tip: Trim the ends of the tassels with a rotary cutter.

Blocking

Blocking is not necessary for this scarf, but I’ve found that the stitches distribute nicely and the rib comes together so it looks more like stockinette (which is how the original scarf appears to be constructed), if you gently pull on the scarf as you go.

I hope you enjoy this pattern! If you would like a PDF printable pattern (it fits all on one page, too!), you can pick that up in my Etsy shop here. If you would share it on Pinterest or your other social channels for me, I would really appreciate it!

Super Slipper Patterns Shortlist

Remember how I said my feet are cold because it’s all cold here super early this year? Well, I don’t know why, as a knitter & crocheter that I never seem to have a good pair of slippers, but I really need to make myself a pair. Now I’m trying to decide which pattern to make. Can you help? Here’s my shortlist.

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

While I like the ease of slip-on clogs, Mr Evangelist does not like the look of the crocs I bought when I was pregnant and my feet were swelling and I still wanted to take my toddler to the park. This pattern isn’t intended for outdoors (but there are a couple options to make them that way!), but I like the simplicity and the slip-on ease of this crochet knit-look clog slipper pattern. Personally, I think I like the cord-soled option, though with some Phentex, the crocheted sole would also be a good option for making your slippers last a little longer.

Don’t know how to crochet? Learn with a subscription to

This sweater slipper clog pattern is another contender, also by the same designer, Sophie & Me Pdf Pattern Design. Another clog pattern. Cute and has a fun sweater stripe pattern to it. I love the idea of lining them like this, but I’m not sure I would ever get around to it. My feet just get all cold and I’d want to wear them right away.

Magic for Kids has this lovely design for a pair of women’s clog slippers with jute rope soles. I’m partial to the yellow that they are shown in and that the pattern is designed with jute rope soles.

I also love these Oma House Slippers available in all the sizes from Mamachee. It looks like a super cute and simple pattern, similar to a pair I made a few years ago, but I didn’t put a good sole on it, so they wore out quickly on the bottom.

These Children’s Mary Jane Skimmer Slippers from sylver are the perfect little ballet slipper for kids! Look how fun they are in all these bright colours!

Now into more of the knit booties family of slippers, I’ve found this cute pattern for 3-in-1 button boots. They button up into full booties or fold down for the sweet look above.

Need to learn to knit first? Check out some online classes from Blueprint.

I’ve also made this crocodile stitch booties pattern from Bonita Patterns a few years ago. I didn’t test my gauge and they ended up being huge, which was unfortunate, but then I had a revelation from above and I pulled them over the hideous crocs that Mr Evangelist hates the look of so much. They ended up looking like giant baby booties, which is kind of funny, but also functional for hiding crocs. The crocs aren’t very cosy inside, so they’re really just for looking ok. The soles were holding up surprisingly well until I washed them and then they fell apart. I still have them, but don’t wear them much because they look bad.

So, what do you think I should make to warm my toes this upcoming season? Let me know here or comment on this pin:

Halloween is coming up, so there’s no better time to start making some adorable little not-so-frightening handmade stuffed toys! There are so many fun patterns to make! These would make great decor items to spruce up your house for the spooky season ahead.

First off, check out this adorable bat pattern from the Etsy shop, Manuska. I love the lacy wings on this crocheted bat doll: such a unique feature! And she’s just so sweet worked up in the pink and grey with the little bow on her head! Not like a gross, dusty real bat at all!

How are these little guys for adorable and non-scary Halloween amigurumi? Have you ever seen such cute little dolls? What a fun trio of costumed dolls. And you can get all three patterns together here. So cute.

If little ghosts are more your thing, check out this adorable little ghost amigurumi pattern. So sweet! He looks like he would work up really quickly for a last minute project… or maybe some little treats for the special trick-or-treaters in your neighbourhood!

Not wanting to leave my knitters in the lurch, if you’re a knitter, you should also check out this fabulous and sweet knitting pattern for a pumpkin-costumed stuffed bunny! So sweet! (I think I had a costume just like this one when I was little!)

Here’s another sweet little adorably innocent-looking Halloween pumpkin: it’s already crocheted up for you so you don’t have to do any work, but I’m sure you could find another pattern and modify it to make up a similar one for yourself if that was more your thing.

Just because monsters are usually scary, doesn’t mean they have to be. While these crocheted monsters with an underbite definitely sport a grumpy expression, there’s no denying they’re absolutely loveable!

Another adorable monster!!! This little monster-costumed doll crochet pattern would make a sweet little handmade gift for any child! Does she remind you of the little girl in Monsters Inc? Maybe not scary… definitely cute.

This sweet little monster looks shy and scared himself: no way he’s scaring anyone else! This little stuffed toy would make a fetching addition to any nursery! Perfect unique handmade gift for a child!

If you like these patterns, you should go pick one up from Etsy. There are many more adorable Halloween amigurumi patterns that I didn’t have time to tell you about. Etsy also has plenty of other Halloween inspiration here.

Costume Hats

With the weather turning cooler and Halloween decorations beginning to show up in stores, I’ve been thinking about making fun hats for the kids, that also double as costumes. Where I live, it could easily be snowing or freezing on Halloween so incorporating a warm knit or crocheted hat into your costume is a smart move.

Lael Viking Hat by Mamachee

This simple and adorable Lael Viking Hat crochet pattern looks like it would work up quickly for a last minute costume idea. It comes in all sizes, so it would be great to make for matching family costumes. You could easily crochet one up in a couple of hours, I think. Also, how cute is that kid?

Bronster & Missy Monster Crochet Hat Pattern

If monsters are more your jam for Halloween, this fun crochet pattern for Bronster and Missy Monster looks like an easy costume to throw together. You could pretty much just wear jeans and a t-shirt, throw this hat on and boom! you’ve got a costume! Simple for the person in your life who doesn’t want to put a lot of extra thought into a costume (I mean, someone’s got to make it, but…)

Krampus Hat by MoraleFiber

If you’re looking for a more involved and impressive hat costume, there’s this wild Krampus Hat crochet pattern. Perfect if you’re looking for something for a Where the Wild Things Are costume. Isn’t is amazing? What a fantastic-looking hat!

Minion Hat Crochet Pattern

Of course, there are still a lot of kids who want to dress up as their favorite characters from movies and tv shows and Minions from Despicable Me remains very popular still. Check out this simple, yet sweet little minion hat that would get any kid to wear a hat to school on a cold winter day! Maybe then my kids would stop losing them!

Kitten Hat Knitting Pattern

If you’re a knitter and not a crocheter, then there are even some adorable costume hats that you can make. This Kitten Hat Knitting Pattern is much more subtle than some of the other patterns, so it could easily be worn well past the Halloween season, but would also make another super simple last minute costume, if needed.

Foxy & Wolfie Hat Knitting Pattern

Foxes are super popular right now, too and this little Foxy & Wolfie Hat Knitting Pattern comes in three sizes: toddler, child and adult, so you could knit a whole family of foxy hats!

Puppy Dog Crochet Hat Pattern

The great thing about babies is you can dress them as silly as you like and they always look adorable! This sweet Puppy Dog Crochet Hat Pattern would make a seriously adorable photo prop as shown here or a super simple and warm costume accessory for Halloween.

Which adorable costume hat will you make for yourself or a loved one? One time I made this super sweet Larry Boy crocheted hat for my son. Of course, my kids never give me much time when they decide what they want to be for Halloween, so I was pretty sure I was madly crocheting this hat at the last minute. Turned out pretty good. I didn’t have a pattern then and I don’t have one now, but maybe if enough requests come in, then perhaps I will sit down and try to write one up.

What a cool Larry Boy Hat! I wish there was a pattern for this, but it'll just have to be cool by itself! Fun costume hats on this blog!

Harry Potter Patterns

It’s hard to believe that the first Harry Potter books hit the shelves over 20 years ago! My kids are all Potterheads (well, the last one is just starting the books now, but he will be)! We love Harry Potter! There are so many great Harry Potter inspired craft projects to try. I’ve found some great ones for you today!

Look at this amazing knitting pattern for this sweet Harry Potter doll by TutosDelphine! This pattern is available in both English and French and if you’re not a knitter, this is definitely a beautiful-looking pattern that will inspire you to learn! Gorgeous!

While this pattern is unfortunately no longer available, there are some other similar looking wizard amigurumi patterns available here.

First thing’s first, get yourself sorted into a house! You can crochet this fun sorting hat pattern and figure out if you’re a Hufflepuff, a Gryffindor, a Ravenclaw or a Slytherin. (My daughter and I are Ravenclaws.)

UPDATE: This pattern is no longer available, but you can find some other similar hat patterns here.

I was so pleased to find a crochet pattern to make a snowy owl like Hedwig! And it’s a vintage pattern, which I think is cool. Honestly, most vintage patterns look a little wonky, IMHO, but I think this pattern looks great and would be perfect to make the Potterhead in your life their very own owl!

If you’re looking to make a unique gift for the Harry Potter fan in your life, you can’t go wrong with this adorable, grumpy Mandrake amigurumi crochet pattern! Thankfully these stuffed toys will not scream like a “real” mandrake!

This fall season with back to school and Halloween approaching just get me in the mood for Harry Potter. I’m so pleased to have started reading the books again with my youngest son. It’s been a while for me! I hope you enjoy these Harry Potter inspired knitting and crochet patterns!
