Patterns to Make Your Own Plants and Hangers

I don’t know if your plant collection has been growing during this global panorama, but mine has! Plants are life! If you’re running out of places to put them, then I’ve got a great collection of knit and crochet planters for you to make so you can hang them on your wall or from your ceiling! If you have not had much luck with your plants, I even have a few patterns to knit or crochet your own plants, which require next to no care or green thumb at all!

This Air Plant Holder from La Leh Crochet is perfect for silk plants or air plants. I bet you could even get a small succulent in this little planter and hang it from a wall just about anywhere. This simple little pattern will work up quickly and use up a bit of scrap yarn. This kind of project is perfect to bring in the car with you (while someone else drives!) and make on the go!

This set of 5 Hanging Crochet Planter Patterns from Of Mars is a great way to get a variety of planters made for your home. How fun would a collection of these hanging at various heights in a window be? While I myself have not done macrame since my Girl Guide days in the ’80s (unless you count my friendship bracelet making days of the ’90s), the Luna Macrame Wall Plant Hanger Pattern from cotton dreamer is totally inspiring me to pick up some macrame cotton and tie some knots! I love it when you can hang plants on the wall and this wall hanging combines the beautiful macrame wall hanging design with the function of a plant hanger! Beauty! These simple and adorable Plant Pocket Crochet Pattern from Sass And Stitch Crochet are perfect for air plants or silk plants or other little bits of greenery that you can just tuck into a little pocket on the wall! The more I look at this functional little crochet pocket, the more I think I might even be able to use one of these in my kitchen for plastic lids! There have not been a lot of options for knitters this week. The dreaded lily beetle has been ravaging gardens here in Edmonton and it’s a constant battle for gardeners to keep their lilies looking beautiful with this vicious pest around. You won’t have to fight the lily beetle if you just crochet yourself some lilies instead!

Or knit yourself a little succulent. The Succulent Plant Knitting Pattern from Knit the Stars is a quick and easy pattern that will use up some of your scraps and wouldn’t these darling little plants make perfect co-worker gifts or teacher gifts or housewarming gifts?

I have not had a lot of success with growing vines, but I love it when plant hangers have long draping foliage, so I’m definitely eyeing up this 5 Crochet Plant Vines Crochet Pattern from Keeleys Crochet. The beauty of these no-maintenance plants is that you can hang them up high in a place that is difficult to get to and you don’t have to worry about watering them.

I think the plant that has gained the most popularity over the last 16 months is the monstera. This unique plant is just stunning to look at and the beautiful fenestrations just make it such an inspiring plant. Making for the Kitchen – Knit, Crochet & Sewing Patterns

We are about to head into a pretty major kitchen renovation in a few days, so I have kitchen on the brain. And while I probably won’t have a lot of extra time for making the finishing touches in the kitchen just yet, thinking about them helps me get motivated to do the dirty work of cleaning up and preparing for the weeks of chaos ahead of us. In the mean time, you all can enjoy some great modern knit and crochet patterns for the kitchen. One of the reasons I love knit and crochet so much is that you can make custom solutions for little problems in your life or just add something extra special, that matches perfectly and functions well. Check out these great patterns.

A little kitchen rug is a nice touch by the sink to add some cushion beneath your feet and absorb the little splatters from the faucet. The Modbob Rug Crochet Pattern from The Cozy Knot Crochet is a cute and modern, bobble-embellished crochet pattern that would work at a kitchen sink, as a bathmat, or as an entry rug.

The Easy Kitchen Towel Topper Crochet Pattern from Stitching Together is a quick and easy kitchen towel topper that is innovatively attached to the top corner and then uses the towel itself to wrap around the handle of your stove. It makes a quick little housewarming gift when you don’t have a lot of advanced notice and it’s a great little project to use up some scrap cotton yarn. This pattern is also available for free here. Here’s another quick and useful project for you: the Sunburst Dish Scrubby Crochet Pattern from Bash Yarn Works is a super quick and functional dish scrubby made with nylon yarn or 3″ spooled tulle. So many people I know love having a handy little dish scrubby like this one in their kitchen!

DeBrosse NYC once again has a modern and gorgeous coaster pattern for your contemporary kitchen. The Croix Crochet Coaster Pattern. This stylish and modern take on the coaster provides the perfect pop of chic to your coffee table. The clean lines of the waistcoat stitch paired with the curvature of the wooden ring create a simple but stunning combination. If you haven’t checked out DeBrosse NYC patterns before, it is definitely worth your time-all of her patterns are sleek and clean and NOT your granny’s crochet patterns!

Another handy crocheted item for the kitchen is this Easy Crocheted Hanging Basket from Iknit For Cozy Home. Made with jute (or cotton: Lionbrand 24/7 Cotton is also a great choice and comes in 37 different colours! The colour Hay Bale is almost exactly a jute colour!) These hanging baskets would be great to hold plants, utensils, or other items you want to keep handy, but off your countertop!

I’m sure you were wondering how long it was going to take me to get around to the most obvious handmade kitchen accessory: the dishtowel. The Turtle Trunk has this great Farmhouse Dish Set Crochet Pattern, which includes easy patterns and instructions for three different towels: a dishcloth/washcloth pattern (8.5″ x 8.5″), a dish towel (13″ x 21″), and a hanging towel (8.5″ x 19″). Dishie yarn is a great choice for this set, too!

Don’t worry, knitters, I haven’t forgotten about you! The Ocean View Dishcloth Knitting Pattern from Goose Creek Knits is a nautical-themed dishcloth pattern and features alternating rows of garter stitch and ribbing, which keeps it laying nice and flat. Knit from corner to corner, it uses a simple combination of knit, purl, increase, and decrease stitches. This is a great beginner knitting pattern!

Are you concerned about the amount of water it takes to process cotton? Re-Up Yarn from Lion Brand is a recycled 100% cotton yarn that is great for these dishcloth patterns and other kitchen items. By using one 70 gram ball of Re-Up Yarn, you are saving 1,400 liters of water!

There are so many great options out there for knit dishcloth patterns! The Woven Waves Dish Towel knitting pattern from Nich Knits uses slip-stitch knitting to create a woven fabric using basic stitches. This pattern is beautiful, reversible, and thick enough for a great dish towel.

While not strictly a pattern for the kitchen, this Egg-cellent Apron Crochet Pattern from Heart Hook Home is just what you need if you have backyard chickens and need to collect eggs. Not only does it include individual egg pockets to accommodate 19 eggs, but there’s also a larger pocket for your cell phone, to-do list, pen, or whatever else you might need to carry. Heart Hook Home also offers this pattern for free (with ads) on her blog.

If sewing is more your jam, did you know you can buy digital sewing patterns online? The Jess Apron Sewing Pattern from Bouquet Clothing is an easy sewing pattern for beginners to make their own custom apron. This classic pattern includes options to sew a full or half vintage-inspired apron and the options for your own embellishments are details are endless!

If you prefer the casual and full coverage style of a Japanese pinafore apron, the Crossback Apron Sewing Pattern from TOTO shop UA is a lovely classic and simple apron pattern with two front large pockets. I love this style of apron because it has no ties to get tangled and wrinkled in the wash.

If you wanted to embellish your apron (or something else) with embroidery, you should check out Florals and Floss Stick and Stitch Embroidery Designs. Add your very own customization to your apron or tea towels for your own unique kitchen accessories! Perhaps when we’re all finished with our kitchen project, I’ll spend the upcoming fall and winter evenings peacefully stitching up some custom tea towels to adorn my new fun kitchen. (And maybe my family won’t use THOSE ones to mop up the dirtiest messes in the kitchen as they have with all my other new towels so that every bloody one is stained… uh oh, now I’m starting to rant; time to wrap up!)

Play with Your Knit & Crochet!

I just love the versatility of yarn crafts! You can make garments and accessories, blankets, pillows, wall hanging, but also TOYS! There are patterns for dolls, animals and stuffed friends of all kinds, but did you know you can also make interactive toys? Check out this great collection of toys and games that you can make with knit and (mostly) crochet!

I bet you weren’t thinking of chess pieces! First off, finding this pattern was inspired by my middle child who has developed a keen interest in chess. He’s quite good! He and Mr. Evangelist played 3 games last weekend and the almost 14-year old won all three games! I was crocheting while they were playing and he couldn’t find a piece, so I searched and found this incredible Set of Chess Piece Amigurumi Patterns from Vliegende Hollander includes instructions in both English and German for making all six chess pieces. Made with worsted weight yarn, they work up to be 8″-15″ tall, so it would be quite large if you made a whole set of pieces! I would love to try to make these with a smaller sized yarn to see if I really could replace the lost piece!

We also have a big soccer fan in our family. Our youngest child has dreams of playing in the pros! This Soccer Ball Crochet Pattern, also from Vliegende Hollander looks like it would be a far quicker project than a set of chess pieces (and definitely less complex). If you’re new to crochet amigurumi, this would be a great first project for you, learning to make a ball shape and adding some pentagons.

This is a great deal of a pattern, as it also includes the patterns for all of the foods that the hungry caterpillar eats!

Interactive Quiet Play Books like this Bundle of Patterns from Joanite Theron Designs are fun to make and fun for keeping little hands and mind occupied during quiet times. This bundle of patterns includes the Dinosaur Playbook, the Out in Space Playbook, and the Pirate Playbook, a great collection of patterns for the adventure-seeking kid in your life!

Play food is such a fun crocheted toy to make! This inventive Crocheted Peelable Watermelon pattern from honeybee69 wraps up into a round watermelon shape and is totally baby-safe with no loose or small parts. Completely wash- and dry-able, this is a lovely toy for a small child to enjoy as they mimic mom and dad cutting up their own watermelon!

Similarly, honeybee69 also has this cute Crocheted Peelable Orange Amigurumi Pattern in a series of interactive food patterns that include apples, corn, pears, bananas, kiwis, and more! Check out all of the great food patterns!

I’ve always wondered why there aren’t more crocheted puppet patterns. It seems like such a good idea! This Crocheted Giraffe Hand Puppet Pattern is an adorable, baby-safe pattern complete with 30 photos and 13 pages of detailed description for how to make this sweet and cartoonish crocheted giraffe puppet!

Alright, knitters, this one’s for you (sorry: knitting just doesn’t lend itself to toys as well as crochet does!), but this Super Sonic Froggie Knitting Pattern from Phoenix Knits just makes me smile! With elastic through his body and down his arms, he can be shot off across the room by putting a finger down each of his front feet and pulling his back legs to stretch the elastic and letting go! How fun is that!? This would make a fun and delightful little gift for a fun-loving kid in your life!

The summer heat really hit in full force for us here in Edmonton (even though it is technically still spring). Having a water balloon fight is a fun way to cool down with the kids, but I don’t like the waste and mess of conventional water balloons. You can crochet reusable water balloons for your kids with this quick and free crochet pattern and Bernat Blanket Yarn. If you don’t want to make your own, there are plenty of makers who will make these for you!

I was just so delighted when I saw this hilarious Crocheted Monster Amigurumi Pattern from aNZeesCraft. Even if you can’t figure out how to modify this pattern to turn make it hold your pyjamas, it’s still so full of character, it would be sure to delight any child!

It’s Time to Start Making Christmas Gifts

Ok, yes, it seems weird to start thinking about Christmas as we’re just getting started with real Spring and Summer, but if we don’t start thinking about it now, we end up in a mad, hand-cramping, making frenzy in December or giving homemade gift cards for something we need to finish up in January-or worse-buying something! But if we start now, get some ideas, make some plans, and start working consistently, we can use the love we have for our friends and family to guide our making plans over the next 6 months and still enjoy holiday festivities come December. And won’t it be so exciting to present our loved ones with beautiful, thoughtful handmade gifts that we’ve been waiting with anticipation to give them?! So, once a month over the next 6 months, I will gather up a group of ideas and patterns to get us excited and motivated to start making some great gifts for our friends and family!

You thought I was going to start with complex patterns, didn’t you? This sweater is so versatile; it can be worn year round and it’s so on-trend, your fashion-loving friend will adore this sweater. It is size-inclusive, with sizes from XS to 5XL

Again, just because we’re starting early doesn’t mean we need to make everyone a sweater. If you don’t have quite enough time to knit, crochet or sew a sweater for that special dad in your life, you might have enough time to make him a pair of slippers. The cup cozy has a bottom so you can’t easily drop this drink and it both protects your hand from the temperature of your drink as well as the elements. Maybe the men don’t need this as badly as I do, as my hands are often cold, but it’s such a fun idea and it will make a great conversation piece.

The Beer Mug Beer Cozy Crochet Pattern from You Should Craft is a quick and festive pattern full of fun for dad. Help keep his beer cold and hands warm with this fun beer mug cozy! These work up quickly with worsted yarn, so if you’re looking for something quick, this is your pattern!

Did you know that wool is an insulating fibre? It’s great for keeping things warm and cool! So if you had some wool around, it would make a great yarn for these beer cozy patterns! If you don’t know where to start, KnitPicks has a great selection of wool yarns at affordable prices; the Wool of the Andes yarns would work great for these.

Vacation Makes to Get Away With

I just received my first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine yesterday, so I am hopeful that one day soon we might be able to take vacations again! But what better way to spend my time while I wait for my second dose and wait for my fellow humans to get vaccinated than to make some vacation and summer-inspired patterns? I have collected a bunch of patterns that are great to wear on vacation or great projects to make on vacation, as we all look longingly ahead to knitting and crocheting on the beach!

This is a cute beach cover-up, but you’ll have to make significant adjustments if you’re larger than a Medium.

This Beach Beauty Cover Up Crochet Pattern from Knot Yourself Out makes another cute beach cover-up, it is just one size, but it does contain instructions for adjusting the size to suit, as it is just made up of two rectangles stitched together, leaving room for the neck, arms and side slits.

The Juliette Top Crochet Pattern from Ruby Webbs is a lovely staple summer top pattern. I love the way the vertical lines of the rows (worked sideways!) make a subtle texture. This pattern is very easy and suitable for the beginner crocheter. It is written to includes sizes extra small to extra large, from a 28″ – 46″ bust.

If you are looking for a quick and easy summer crop top pattern, check out this cute Crocheted Crop Top Pattern from Knitcro Addict. This pattern is a little more size-inclusive, including sizes from XS-XXL. I love the little peekaboo butterfly in the middle of the top. Florals and Floss also has great embroidery kits if you’re just getting started or you don’t want to shop around for all the different colours of floss you don’t have. I have purchased two of her kits and her instructions are great and the kits are so beautifully packaged. If you live in Edmonton, you can pick it up for free (and usually the next day!)

These gorgeous Wildflowers on Transparent Background embroidery kits from 55 Tree are just incredible, aren’t they? I am seriously considering making some of these for decorating our family room when we’re finally done renovating? (Did I mention we’re renovating again, soon? Well, that is the plan, anyway.)

Or you could make your mom a squishy, Chunky Bobble Crochet Pillow with this pattern by my friend Candace at Hello Wildflower Co. This pattern crochets up quickly with super fluffy chenille yarn. It calls for Linen100 yarn (which I’m not familiar with, but I bet Lionbrand 24/7 Cotton Yarn would work great, too!

This Boho-Style Jute Eco-Bag Crochet Pattern from LapaLand is relaxed and textured and makes a perfect summer crossbody handbag for keeping your things near while taking a stroll in the park or at a festival (Do we get festivals again? Soon? Please?) I just love the natural colours of the jute and the wooden button. There’s just something so calming about these neutral colours and natural fibres. Sometimes it’s hard to find jute yarn, but you can get some here on Amazon, but I’ve also found it at the dollar store.

Bags are for knitters, too! This Easy Chunky Knit Crochery Bat Pattern from Striks And Mix Pattern is extra beginner-friendly with NO PURL stitches! So if you hate to purl or you’re just looking for a mindless pattern to use up a ball of your stash, this is the pattern for you! You can make multiple sizes by using different size yarns and the corresponding needles.

I just love the beautiful texture and drape on The Sweetpea Top Crochet Pattern from Evelyn And Peter. This is a size-inclusive pattern written in 8 sizes (S-5X) and calls for Lionbrand Truboo Yarn, which is a 100% bamboo yarn with a gorgeous sheen and a delicious drape! It is so soft so it makes the perfect yarn to make lightweight garments! This pattern is also available as part of a Lionbrand Kit, so if you want to get the yarn and pattern altogether, pick up the kit and save yourself the trouble of sourcing the yarn and pattern separately.

Isn’t this gauzy Summer Knit Top Pattern from ileaiye just dreamy? It is made with chunky yarn and some extra large knitting needles, which makes for a quick and easy project with this stunning, easy-breezy, boho style. If you’re not afraid to show some skin, it would make a gorgeous top to wear out and about or as a beach cover-up. So pretty! This is a super easy pattern and would work up quickly with the large needles!

I love the simplicity of the Silver Spring Knit Tank Pattern from wise knits designs. This easy knitting pattern is quick and easy and uses 550-1500 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn. I would recommend Lionbrand’s Cotton Ease Yarn for this project.

Did you know you can knit your own shorts? I never would have thought of it before, but these look so light and comfy! This Light Summer Shorts Knitting Pattern from Holly C Watson makes a pair of high-waisted shorts with a drawstring waistband and flowy, wide legs with a rolled cuff. I think these would feel lovely in this Bambu 7 Yarn from Lionbrand.
