Colourwork Beanies

Knit hats, toques, beanies, winter caps: whatever you call them they’re cuter with a fun pattern knit into them. Colourwork is a skill that is a little intermediate, but usually, these kinds of projects only require the basic knit and purl stitches. You just add some colours in there for a fun design. These kinds of projects are great for using up a partial skein of yarn and you can play around with colours to your heart’s content! I’ve found a bunch of great knit hat patterns for you to try out your intarsia or fair isle skills!

Maybe it’s just because I’m a sucker for mustard, but the Sedona Diamond Fair Isle Beanie Pattern has a cute diamond design that is geometric and fun. Knit with chunky yarn, this hat would work up quickly, and with just two colours, it would make a good first colourwork project!

More diamonds! More mustard! The Fair Isle Diamonds Knitting Hat Pattern is another bulky weight knit hat pattern with just two colours to make another good first colourwork project. Which diamond pattern would you choose? I’m having trouble picking one…

The Minnehaha Hat Knitting Pattern is a classic “little hearts” knitting pattern. If you’re new to knitting, those little hearts are just one knit stitch made in a different colour. So it’s really fun to see it come together in dotted little hearts. This pattern is also worked up in a super bulky weight yarn, so it will only take you about 1-2 hours to knit up this little beauty! Imagine making one of these for baby in the same colours as a coffee hat for mama? Adorable little matching “set”!

The Big Heart Beanie Knitting Pattern is a beginner level pattern with video tutorials, and the heart isn’t actually knit into the hat, it’s embroidered on afterwards! So you wouldn’t even have to do any colourwork on this one to achieve the same stunning results!

If you have a little more time on your hands and skill under your belt, Grandpas Garden Fair Isle Hat Knitting Pattern is a sweet-looking little hat, knit with much finer wool, but then you can achieve the gorgeous detail of a dainty garden full of flowers! As we’re yearning for spring in late winter, this hat can bring a little joy as we dress for the elements!

How about some handmade first married Christmas gifts for your favourite newlyweds? The Mrs Beanie Knit Hat Pattern and the Mr Beanie Knit Hat Pattern are matching set for a new husband and wife team.

The Big Zig Beanie Knitting Pattern is another colourwork pattern using bulky weight yarn. I love the sideways chevron design on this sweet beanie. Imagine all the colour combinations you could use on this cute hat pattern!

The Riverbend Beanie in 6 sizes is a perfect hat pattern to whip up the whole family fun and warm winter hats with stripes! The multi-coloured yarn matched with the cream adds a lot of fun to this basic striped hat.

There are so many great bulky weight yarn colourwork hats this year! The Aspen Beanie Knitting Pattern has a simple but interesting design, wouldn’t get boring to knit at all! And again with that large yarn, works up quickly as a last-minute handmade gift!

Update: unfortunately, it doesn’t look like this pattern is available anymore, but check out MbyM Knitwear for some other great options for colourwork hat knitting patterns.

Using only 2 colours and bulky weight yarn, the Skyfall Beanie Knitting Pattern comes with two charts to make two different hats with slightly different designs on them. This is the perfect project for beginners who want to dive into the world of fair isle knitting and a nice quick knit for the fair isle pros. The pattern includes detailed instructions and a tips and tricks page to help you along the way, as well as a very inconspicuous join/jog in the charts!

Finally The Mountaineer Toque Knitting Pattern. I love the trees and the mountains in the background. If you’re venturing out into the great outdoors this winter, this adorable hat would be just perfect! Inspired by the Coastal Mountains of British Columbia, this fair isle knitting pattern is great for adventurous beginners and well as seasoned knitters. Fun for everyone!

So which hat will you choose? With so many options, it is hard! Whatever you choose, it can’t be the wrong decision! So jump in, grab a pattern and a couple of balls of different coloured yarn and get to work! Or pin it for later.

Double Brim Knit Hats

Have you seen this technique for a knit hat brim? These colour-block beanies are very popular right now and this seamless brim is such a great technique for creating a simple hat edge without using ribbing (but you can) or ending up with a rolled edge. So all you need to do is knit (no purling)! It also gives you the opportunity to learn a new technique: provisional cast on, though I’ll include a link to a video that doesn’t require a provisional cast on as well as the provisional cast on. It’s worth learning because the provisional cast on results in a seamless and stretchier brim. Check out these patterns for double brim knit hats that are so popular now and learn a new technique while you’re at it!

First, there’s this super simple pattern in just one colour and straight-forward stockinette stitch, The Doubly. This pattern includes video tutorials and the double brim beanie pattern from Heart Hooked by Tilly.

For a two colour option, you can pick up this Bremner Beanie knitting pattern, which comes in 5 sizes from Amy Wood and Wool.

Or try this option from DeBross NYC, which promises to be a little more slouchy. The slouchy beanies are still super popular this year.  The Savante Two Tone beanie looks great topped with a faux fur pom pom!

By adding just one more colour, you can create this trendy Double Brim Hiker Beanie. This pattern from True North Knits Co comes in sizes for the whole family. Wouldn’t winter family photos be so fun with everyone in one of these adorable hats?

Or you can add a bit of a pattern with this Fisherman Toque by Lamb and Co Designs. I love the super bulky yarn used for this beanie; it makes for a super quick project!

If you’re looking for a more involved pattern and love colourwork, check out this Lake Louise Toque knitting pattern from Woollie and Weft. Isn’t that deep teal colour beautiful?! Love it!

Take some time this winter to learn this new technique of the double brimmed hat. This video is a great tutorial if you already have a good idea of how to make a provisional cast on and you’re working in stockinette. This video has instructions for a provisional cast on, but it is worked in rib stitch, so it’s a little different, but not difficult to adapt to stockinette. And this video includes a whole pattern for free and does not require a provisional cast on. She does show you that you will get a seam, which I do not prefer, so I would use one of the other options for a cast on.

Let me know if you make one of these! Or pin it for later and to share with the world!

I love this cabled Alpine Beanie Pattern. It looks knit, but it’s crochet!

I’ve posted other plaid crocheted hat patterns before, but if you’re a knitter, this Pumpkin Pie Knitting Pattern is a great chunky knit hat for you to practice your plaid.

Check out this awesome diamond embellished Knit Regan Beanie pattern! Also a chunky knit, it would work up quickly! I love the colour choices in this example, too! Which colours would you choose?

Here’s another crocheted pattern, this Crochet Dandelion Slouch Beanie Pattern is worked up with a self-striping yarn, probably with a Caron Cake or something. So cute. I love this colour choice too!

The Toph Slouchy Beanie Hat Knitting Pattern looks almost surreal! As a relatively experienced knitter, I have no idea how I would begin to make this, so I would totally need to buy the pattern! I have about 5 or 6 patterns that I still need to make right now, so I’ll have to put this one on hold for now! Will you make it and show me?

There are so many creative ways to work colour into crocheted hats, like this Speckled Ridge Hat Crochet Pattern. I love the chunky pops of colour. And those yarn pompoms are super easy to make with a pompom maker. I love mine!

I’ve been meaning to learn this woven crochet stitch in this Crochet Hat Pattern! It looks so lovely in this hat! I want one!

Of course, not all of us have time to make it all, but you can still have a handmade Knitted hat with pompom, if you’re willing to part with a little more money! You get the finished work of a skilled craftsperson and none of the work! Sounds like a win to me! With the gift-giving season drawing ever closer, it’s time to get those orders in!

Here’s another great option for the time-crunched, the Ski Bunny Knit Hat. This one is a lovely chunky, cable-knit toque, perfect for the ski hill. How cute will you look skiing this holiday in this gorgeous beanie?

Pick up a pattern and some yarn today and you might have a hat by tomorrow (if you’re fast)! Or pin it so you don’t forget (or share it with your sister so she can make you one… that’s what my sisters do).

This Plaid About You beanie featuring a sweet plaid heart is a great handmade gift idea for anyone you love, though, I think it might be better suited to the ladies. (I don’t know what it is with dudes having a problem with wearing hearts.) I love it though. Super adorable.

I guess a more manly option would be this cool Oso Plaid Beanie in the same Etsy shop: Evelyn & Peter. The plaid bear pattern is so cool. And can you believe these are crocheted? They look so good. I love this style of plaid! And the designs in the midst of them? Genius!

While we’re still talking about this designer, we can’t forget one of my favorite designs: The Flannel Forrest Beanie. I’m still just blown away that these hats are crocheted! Have you made one of these gorgeous hats? If you do, let me know! They’re on my list to make. Again with the lovely fur pompoms… so super trendy and adorable. I had to buy myself a bunch last winter. You can get them here if you’re looking for some. Make sure you get the remove-able ones (mine have snaps!) so you can wash your toque (that’s Canadian for winter hat).

You certainly can’t go wrong with checking out the plaid patterns by Whistle & Ivy. They’re super affordable and super adorable, all at the same time! I made this pattern last year and I must say, her instructions are great and the hat looks fantastic, just like these pictures!

And, while I think plaid can definitely be worn year round, but especially in the fall and winter. there’s something about buffalo plaid that’s just a little bit Christmas-y. So, you have plenty of time to crochet up a couple of these adorable Chalet Rustic Pillow Covers to throw on your couch for the upcoming winter season! The deer pattern is just impeccable! What a fun and festive idea!

Grab some supplies!

The Tegan Beanie

I know it’s not quite winter hat weather right now. In fact, it was such a long winter that I’m not sure I want to see another toque (that’s Canadian for winter beanie) again! But I couldn’t help but post about this after I stumbled upon this lovely pattern the other day.

*Disclosure: some of the following links are affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

Can you believe this is a crochet pattern? I love it! I definitely need to spend some more time crocheting next fall and this one tops my list for lovely colour-work projects for winter!

You can get the pattern for this “The Tegan Beanie” for only $3.33 CAD (today, anyway; the currency-conversion is always shifting, but suffice it to say it’s a reasonably priced pattern!) from Fiber and Fern Designs.
