Snuggly Handmade Socks to Knit and Crochet

I finally did it! This was the year I knit myself some socks! They’re so great: I love them! They’re so warm! If you want to see my process and finished knit socks, follow me on Instagram to see all the patterns I make! If you have not experienced the joy and warmth of handmade wool socks, you need to get your hands (…feet?) on some of these! I’ve collected a bunch of great sock patterns for you to try out, whether you knit or crochet!

First, for the knitters: The Thicksgiving Socks from Summer Lee Design Co. These socks are an easy, basic, worsted weight sock knitting pattern with three different variations. Theh pattern set includes tips and tricks for working worsted socks by marling two strands of fingering weight yarn together.

The Vanilla Socks on DPNs knitting pattern by Crazy Sock Lady Designs is another straightforward sock design. If you prefer double-pointed needles or that’s all you have, this pattern is for you, specifically designed for double-pointed needles (DPNs), it has an accompanying video tutorial that walks you through how to make the entire sock on DPNs, from setting up the Cast-On to the Kitchener-stitch toe and weaving in your ends!

The Heartnut Socks knitting pattern from Knox Mountain Knit Co is actually a physical item, unlike most of the PDF downloads that I feature here on my blog. The full colour, professionally printed knitting pattern is printed on acid-free, heirloom quality papter and includes a digital download code for Ravelry, which is definitely an interesting delivery method! Let me know if you like this and I will consider featuring something like this in my patterns! I love the beautiful and elegant heartnut inspired cable across the top, so if you’ve been wanting to make socks and also learn cables, this is the pattern for you!

If you’re looking for a deal of a pattern, this Top-Down Adult Socks Knitting Pattern from Zyapa Masha is only $0.66 Canadian! It includes 6 pages of text, charts and pictures. The socks are worked top down, using double-pointed needles OR circular needles, if you use the magic loop method (I love magic loop! I use circular needles for everything!).

Wondering what knitting needles I use? KnitPicks Interchangeables are my go to needles!

If you consider yourself an intermediate knitter, then the River Ripple Socks knitting pattern by Lucy Neatby of little barn studios is the pattern for you. Perfect for showing off a skein of hand-painted yarn, the construction is beautiful! From the description: “These socks are begun with a soft faced cuff with a decorative i-cord inspired detail. This leads into the leg pattern with cabled elongated stitches to highlight the colours in the yarn. A 70% garter stitch short row heel is used (with smaller needles for added durability) and then the leg stitch pattern is reversed with a condensed stitch pattern for the sole, adding strength, warmth and maintaining equal row height with the instep pattern. Finished with a cozy garter stitch toe to coordinate with the heel.” Sounds so good, right?

The Cozy Cabin Socks knitting pattern from Darling Jadore is another lovely worsted-weight sock knitting pattern. “A classic construction with cozy knit stitches on worsted-weight yarn, The Beginner Socks pattern is perfect for first-time sock knitters and seasoned knitters alike. Designed with beginners in mind, this pattern thoroughly guides you through each step and with video guidance. You’ll be amazed by how quickly these socks knit up, and how fun they are to make.”

The House Socks knitting pattern from HandKnit Home is a great knitting pattern for a pair of cute and comfortable ankle-length socks. The pattern is written for Adult Medium size and includes instructions for adding length to the foot for a longer sock. The pattern calls for an Estonian cast on (new cast-on for me! I love learning new techniques!), but will work just as well with a regular long-tail cast on.

How about some colour-work socks? The MIEZI Sock knitting pattern from average pony gives you detailed instructions on how to knit a pair of socks with leopard spots! How cool is that?! (Also, don’t you love the bottom of the foot, too?! The pattern contains detailed descriptions on how to knit cuff, leg, shadow wrap heel, foot and toe of your new sock. The pattern is especially designed with frequent color changes so that you rarely have long floats and none is longer than 9 or 10 stitches. So it’s perfect for practicing colorwork.

While the colourwork socks may be a little more advanced than your skills, the Retro Socks knitting pattern from D19 Eco Friendly Life might be more your speed. The diamond texture adds interest, while still allowing this pattern to be classified as a beginner pattern. So, if you’ve wanted to get started with some socks, but are bored by the plain socks of traditional beginner knit sock patterns, check out this pattern

Looking for some sock yarn? KnitPicks has a wide variety of sock yarns at a variety of price points, in a wide range of fibre contents. Local yarn shops are also great place to pick up a skein of lovely sock yarn. Since you usually only need one hank of yarn for a pair of socks, it’s a great time to splurge on some hand-dyed local yarns!

Ok, now for the crocheters. We don’t immediately think crochet for socks because the fabrci that is created is typically bulkier and holier at the same time, than I prefer in a sock. But this quote from the listing for this book is worth considering: “Having been a sock knitter for many many years, when it came to crochet socks I found it difficult to find any patterns that didn’t look bulky, stiff and uncomfortable. Tempted to try my hand at knitting lacy socks but lacking the confidence, I turned to my trusty crochet stitches and a new love was born. You really can make crochet socks that are comfortable, beautiful and practical.” The Crochet Sock Collection is a physical printed booklet from Vicki Brown Designs. If you want to get going right away, though, you can add a note to the seller and you will also be sent a PDF copy. Try out some crochet socks with this great collection os 6 crochet sock patterns!

The Herringbone Socks Crochet Pattern from Heart Hook Home is a toe-up, short row heel sock using the Herringbone Half Double Crochet stitch. Available in 5 sizes from Women’s 5 to Men’s 13, you can whip up a pair of these for all your favourite poeple.

The Pearl Socks Crochet Pattern from mon petit violin was originally published in Inside Crochet magazine, issue 101. With lovely texture on the leg portion of the sock, these socks will be stunning to look at outside of the boots and perfect to wear inside of boots to keep your feet warm this winter!

The Happy Socks are an easy crochet pattern as far a socks go! This socks from this pattern by Rich Textures Crochet are made using simple single crochet stitches and worked from the cuff down. It includes a video tutorial includes the full instructions to make a women’s pair of size 5/6 (US) socks. In fact, if you don’t mind reading a pattern online, this pattern is available for free on the Rich Textures Crochet blog (there’s web address in the listing description)!

Cables are typically reserved for knitting, but the Cable Car Socks Crochet Pattern from A la Sascha incorporates beautifully textured cables into these crocheted socks that are not stiff or uncomfortable at all. These socks look so beautifully constructed, it’s very tempting to consider making many pairs of these adorable socks!

What about you? Have you picked a pair of socks to make? They’re actually a pretty quick project. I worked on mine a fair bit over just a few days. It’s so satisfying to watch them come together and then the warmth on the feet! Wow! So worth it! So, grab yourself a pattern and some supplies and get making! Or pin it for later so you don’t forget.

Unwinding with Cable Knit & Crochet Patterns

There’s just something so special about cables in knitting and crochet: the twists and texture of braids and intricate designs. Cables can appear intimidating to the new crafter, but they’re really pretty simple. They require some careful attention, but they’re nothing mystical: they’re formed exactly how you might imagine, by twisting the work as you go. Whether you’re new to cable knitting or cable crochet (yes, you read that right–you can cable in crochet, too!), I’ve got a lovely selection of cable-knit and cable-crochet patterns for you to try out today.

The winter hat is my go-to project for new ideas and stitches. It’s a great way to learn a new stitch because beanies are small projects that work up quickly, so the reward of accomplishment is more immediate than when working on a larger project. The Dunes Beanie Knitting Pattern from Stitch Hiker Designs is an easy cable knit beanie pattern that calls for super bulky (size 6) yarn, so it works up extra fast! And big yarn is so trendy these days. Top it with a large faux fur pompom (I love the selection from Gingersnap Handmade!)

Once you’ve got the hang of cable knitting, the Blacksod Hat Knitting Pattern from While They Dream is a great next project. With smaller yarn and a little more intricate pattern, you’ll find yourself immersed in a relaxing cable stitch pattern that is unisex. This intermediate knit beanie pattern is a great way to improve your knitting skills!

If you didn’t know before, you can get a cable look with crochet! It’s true! The Camdyn Cable Crochet Hat Pattern from Lakeside Loops is a great first cable crochet project to try out this new technique! This hat comes in 6 sizes: Newborn to Adult Men’s hat. This pattern includes detailed photos and a helpful video along with a graph/chart, which accompany the easy to follow written instructions. You’re sure to have a ball of medium weight (size 4, worsted) yarn on hand to have everything you need to make this lovely crocheted winter hat today!

It has a gorgeous cabled sleeve and is made with a large, chunky yarn, which means it will work up quickly with fewer stitches and have a casual cozy vibe!

And you can even crochet a cabled sweater! The V-Neck Cable Sweater Crochet Pattern from Beauty Crochet Pattern also has a lovely cable textured sleeve on this classic pullover sweater pattern! This pattern includes many pictures and a step by step photo tutorial with measurements, stitch counts and extra notes to guide you along your way to making this lovely sweater.

The River Braid Sweater Knitting Pattern from Katrines Designs is knit in one piece–sideways!–in soft merino wool to make up this relaxed, but elegant modern sweater with a loose fit. I just love this style and the lovely gorgeous cabled sleeves!

Moving the cables to the front of the sweater, this Irish Cable Sweater Knitting Pattern from Carraig Designs Crafts is such a lovely modern cable knit top pattern, as well. With a breezy open look and loose relaxed cables, this short sleeved sweater is the perfect layering piece for the office with a classic style.

For some crocheted cables down the front, check out the Crochet Cable Stitch V Neck Sweater from TCDDIY. The textures on this sweater are so lovely and intricate, definitely a project that won’t have you bored with plenty of textures and stitches to enjoy! There are a number of other lovely cable-crocheted patterns in the TCDDIY shop, as well. Definitely worth checking out!

Can you believe that this lovely sweater is crocheted???! The Valencia Infinity Cable Crochet Sweater Pattern from Briana K Designs has a chunky, horizontal twist cable that uses an innovative technique for cables that do not have gaps or holes behind them. These cables pop and have a beautiful start and finish. I think I’m going to get this pattern just to learn this beautiful crochet cable technique! Learning new techniques to level-up my making is one of my favourite things!

I just love this Cozy Celtic Raglan Cable Knit Sweater from Knitatude with its cozy jumbo cowl and lovely celtic cable pattern in the front. Knit with size 6 super bulky yarn, this oversized cropped sweater works up quickly and is so warm for fall and winter!

Similar to the sweater, Knitatude has designed this Cozy Celtic Kerchief Knitting Pattern, which is perfect for layering under a denim jacket (as pictured) without the hassle of trying to fit the bulk of the sleeves in a tighter fitting garment! The look of a chunky cable-knit sweater without the extra bulk! Brilliant! I had to share this because it’s such a unique item that most people wouldn’t even think to search for such a thing!

If garments are not your jam, or you just want to bring that cable texture home, check out this Chunky Oversized Cable Knit Blanket Pattern from Knit Purl Curl. Knit with 2 strands of super bulky yarn held together, this 48″ x 80″ blanket knits up quickly and will add a touch of cozyness to any room! This is the perfect winter throw blanket!

The project is worked in 5 pieces and seamed together for a beautiful bedspread or large throw blanket.

An Oversized Load of Oversized Sweater Knitting Patterns

We have had a very mild winter here so far in Edmonton! It’s been so gorgeous and great to be out walking. And since that’s the only place I really go, the weather has been remarkably cooperative for long walks in the river valley and short ones around the neighbourhood. But I heard on the news that there’s some kind of polar vortex coming our way, which sounds really ominous, but to most Canadians, it really just means “winter.” Ooooohhh it’s going to get really cold and snowy in January and February? Sounds seasonal. Sounds normal. But it also sounds like you’re going to want a big cozy oversized sweater! I’ve found a great collection of oversized cozy sweaters for you to knit to stay warm and cozy during any polar vortext or “winter” or whatever you want to call it. Check out these stylish and cozy oversized sweater patterns and get knitting today for warmth tomorrow!

As you welcome fall this year, it’s a great time to embrace sweater weather! Fall in Edmonton (where I live) is usually a pretty short season. But this year, the weather has been holding so far and the forecast is looking good for the next couple of weeks. PATTERN RELEASE: Tufted Toque!

I’m so excited to announce that I have released my Tufted Toque pattern! It’s been quite the learning curve: writing up the pattern, getting it tech-edited, working with test knitters and learning the ropes of adding the pattern information to Ravelry and Etsy.

So, today’s the day! And here it is! The Tufted Toque pattern is a textured, slightly slouchy hat made with a fun stitch pattern that is made up of a few simple rows of knits and purls. Put them together in the right order and you’ve got this beautifully textured seersucker stitch! Worked in the round on circular needles, this pattern knits up quickly with a gorgeous, pillowy result!

You can buy the pattern for only $6.00 CAD from Ravelry by clicking the little buy now button above. If you prefer to use Etsy, it’s available here.

After working with testers of various levels of knitting skill and experience, I would say that this pattern is perfect for the advanced beginner, or an adventurous beginner. It doesn’t require a lot of specialized stitches, just knits and purls, increasing and decreasing. It’s a great pattern to practice following a pattern and watching the diamond tufts take shape. Even though it is accessible for beginners, my advanced knitters also enjoyed knitting up this pattern.

The pattern is written in 9 sizes, from Newborn to Adult Extra Large (I couldn’t leave out my big-headed husband, could I?), so you can make one for every member of the family and have matching toques for everyone!

Will you please share this cute hat pattern with your knitting friends and followers? Here’s a pin you can share to Pinterest!

Tufted Toque knit beanie pattern. This cute pillowy textured beanie comes in 9 sizes, from newborn to Adult X Large. It's a slightly slouchy beanie knitting pattern, perfect with a large faux fur pompom! Great pattern by #craftevangelist

Often, a knitter’s first project is a dishcloth. Dishcloths make a great first project because it’s small and simple, so it doesn’t take very long before you can cast off and have something you can show your mom and use. Try this Easy Knit Dishcloth Pattern to get your start. You can use these lovely cloths in the kitchen or the bathroom as a luxury face cloth!

If you’re an absolute beginner and have no supplies, a kit is a great way to get started. It means you don’t have to decipher all the information on a pattern and find all the supplies you need. Everything is included in this great Learn to Knit Dishcloths Kit from Gibson and Grey. Try one of these out to get the yarn, pattern, and needles that you need to make it all.

Once you’ve got the hang of that, you can whip up this Homespun Kitchen Set, which adds some simple details. The pattern includes instructions for both a dishcloth and a towel, as well as the i-cord detail to use to hang the cloths up.

Another simple first project is a knitted scarf. This classic knit scarf pattern is in pdf format with links to videos for additional tips to make this easy knit scarf, perfect for men, women or children!

If you’d like to try a snood, which is a circular cowl or infinity scarf, you can get a Chunky Snood Knitting Kit, with the option of having needles included if you don’t already have them. This kit includes a How to Knit manual, which will review all the basics of knitting, including how to cast on, cast off, knit, purl and sew. The yarn is chunky and the needles are 9 mm, which means that it’s a project that will work up quickly due to the large yarn and needles. Another easy garment idea is a knit shawl. This one is definitely more delicate and will absolutely be a great project if you have a lot of time to sit and wait, so it’s perfect for travelling or taking on the go while you wait to pick up kids from school or activities. So, if you’re loving knitting and want a bigger project that is still simple that you can work on, this is definitely for you. It’s designed with fingering or sock yarn in mind, but it’s a pretty flexible pattern, so you could use just about any yarn that you have on hand.

And I keep seeing more and more jumbo yarn options at Michael’s, so it’s getting easier and easier to find the supplies to make these blankets.

Of course, you can also find kits for these chunky blankets as well. I love the look of this natural wool chunky knit blanket. The kit includes 25 mm birch circular knitting needles, which are perfect for blankets! The kit includes 16 balls of wool to make a 46″ x 65″ throw blanket. And don’t you just love those giant tassels on the bottom? LOVE!

The Linden Hat is a super chunky knit hat pattern knits up quickly and is perfect to grab on a cold winter day to keep your ears warm!

And believe it or not, YOU COULD KNIT YOURSELF A SWEATER! That’s right! This Simple Knit Sweater Pattern is an adult-sized knit sweater pattern that can be worked up in a weekend and is so very easy! It’s made using only a few rectangles, some seaming and squishy yarn! It’s a great project for those still new to knitting!
