Embroidery Patterns and Kits for Everyone

While I mostly share knit and crochet patterns here, I have been dabbling in embroidery a little bit recently. It’s a nice break from knitting and crocheting. I first learned to embroider in grade eight Home Ec class and let’s just say it wasn’t my favourite. I think we got some bad instructions. But last year, I was drawn to some really beautiful embroidery projects I saw on Etsy and I just had to try one out. If you’ve been looking at trying embroidery, I’ve gathered up a great collection of pretty little projects for you to try out here.

This cute little Honey Bee Embroidery Kit was the kit that I bought from Florals and Floss that restored my faith in embroidery. Her instructions were so much better than I received in grade eight. I made consistent pretty little french knots (a stitch that eluded me as a young teenager) and ultimately, my project looks pretty similar to the example here. I’m very pleased with it.

I was very intrigued by the Monstera Deliciosa Magnetic Needle Minder from Florals and Floss so I picked up one of these with my embroidery kit and then I wondered what I did without them! I now have this one attached to my knitting pouch, where it keeps my tapestry needles easily accessible.

So when I bought another kit from Florals and Floss, I also picked up her new Wildflower Magnetic Needle Minder. It is super handy for not losing your needle while you’re stitching. And it magnets right to your work so you don’t put any extra holes in your work!

This is the next kit I bought: the Wildflower Bouquet Embroidery Pattern. <– That link is just for the pattern because I don’t think she has the kit in stock at the time of writing, but check out her kits to see if it’s stock. I haven’t started it yet, but I just love her kits! They’re wrapped so prettily and are complete with everything you need. When you’re busy and there’s a pandemic, you don’t want to spend forever in a craft store checking to make sure you’ve got all the right colours of floss just to get home and discover you can’t find your needle! So handy to get everything in a cute little kit.

Once I got reacquainted with embroidery, I thought that Mr Evangelist‘s new office space that we carved out of our sitting room needed a little piece of handmade art. I never would have had the audacity to try making this Appa embroidery from Avatar the Last Airbender if I hadn’t have been reintroduced to embroidery with the kit from Florals and Floss. I couldn’t find an embroidery pattern or kit that I liked, so I found an image online and traced it onto a piece of linen (a piece of an old bedsheet) and got stitching. I’m pretty happy with how he turned out.

This adorable Bicycle Embroidery Kit or Pattern (you can choose either one) from iHeartStitchArt is such a simple and cute little stitching pattern. I love the basket full of flowers. It’s beginner-friendly, so if you’re new to embroidery or you’d like to introduce a loved one, this kit would be a sweet introduction.

The Hipster Stitcher has this Floral Garden Hand Embroidery Kit which is also designed for a beginner. It has a great selection of stitches included in it, so the beginner stitcher can try their hand at a variety of techniques and get a good foundation for embroidery.

I love the simplicity of this Blown Kiss Embroidery Kit from Bijoudebroderie. If you don’t read French, don’t worry “cerceau” means hoop, so ignore the French options and choose the English option kit with hoop (or without hoop). What a pretty little gift this would make for a loved one.

Once you feel like you have a handle on french knots, or if you just want A LOT of practice, try the Coloured Heart Embroidery Kit also from Bijoudebroderie. The pattern is already printed on the fabric, so you can just pop your fabric in the hoop, thread your needle and get stitching!

Another favourite from Bijoudebroderie is this Geometric Deer Head Emboirdery Kit. Simple and classic, this beginner-friendly kit is easy with just one colour of floss, but will make a lovely piece of decor hanging in your home. A perfect little gift for that hard-to-buy-for loved one.

This Bee Kind Hand Embroidery Kit from The Hipster Stitcher is another simple little embroidery kit that is full of whimsy and is sure to make you smile every time you see it. (And can you tell I love bees yet?… I can’t help it, they’re yellow!)

I love the fun 70’s vibe this Mushroom Embroidery Kit from Hook Line Tinker is putting out. These adorably decorated little mushrooms are just so fun. I may need to find a place in my sitting room for this fun little hoop!

Have you had enough florals yet? No? Didn’t think so. This Earthy Floral Embroidery Pattern from Florals and Floss has such a lovely classic design to it. It might have to be my next kit once I finish the one I’ve got. (How am I going to get all this knitting done if I’m constantly stitching?!)

Have you ever thought about embroidering on your clothes? Florals and Floss has these perfect Stick and Stitch Embroidery Designs which are perfect for putting anywhere and stitching some cute little embellishments on your clothes. Embroidery on hand-knit or hand-crocheted items just makes them that much more special. And embroidery on jeans is super trendy right now too. Make your clothes one of a kind!

While this doesn’t exactly look like a beginner pattern to me, look what can be done with embroidery! Needle-painting! How adorable is this Cute Little Bird Needle Painting Pattern from Neva Reef Decor?! It’s just the pattern, but this is definitely something to aspire to. What would you put this little bird on?

I hope you’ve found some inspiration for a new craft and some great resources to get started with embroidery. Check out these great embroidery patterns and kits today and get stitching! Or pin it for later!

Handmade Holiday Gifts

It’s go time! November always takes me by surprise. Before November, if I had started thinking about Christmas gifts or making anything, I was so super early and ahead of the game. Once November hits, I always feel behind. It’s stupid, really. But the maker mom in me wants to handmake something for everyone. Besides making everyone some coasters or ornaments, it just isn’t practical to start in November. But just because you can’t make something elaborate for everyone, doesn’t mean that you can’t make something elaborate for someone special. So, I’ve rounded up a group of patterns to make for some beautiful handmade holiday gifts! Check them out and get to work!

Or… here’s the other trick, if you’re starting in November, you can still get a handmade gift made for you! There are so many makers who make a gorgeous handmade gift for you, wrap it beautifully and ship it to you in time for Christmas. Just take note of any special order-by dates, so you can be sure to get what you want in time for your gift-giving!

Stuffed toys are always a great gift idea for children! Even adults find them hard to resist! This sweet Friendy Wendy the Lamb crochet pattern would make a lovely handmade gift!

The beauty of holiday time is that you can decorate with stuffed toys! When else can you display stuffed toys if you’re not a kid (or my mother-in-law in her spare bedrooms)? You can make this Kevin the Snowman Amigurumi Pattern and put him on your mantle or give him as a loveable Christmas toy!

These Christmas Minis set of crochet toy patterns are another opportunity to make and display some cute little amigurumi toys for the holidays! If you attached some string to these little guys, they would make great hanging ornaments or gift toppers!

My little Oak hubby crochet toy pattern is a sweet little amigurumi toy pattern to make as a lovey for a child. What an adorable earthy little doll! He looks perfectly suited for the woodsy outdoors.

Maybe the hype of Frozne is over now, but I know there are still some die-hard fans out there and kids still love Olaf. If you have a fan in your life, you could make one of these detachable Olaf Snowman crochet patterns. How much fun is it to have an interactive handmade toy to play with!?

Play food is such a fun handmade gift! This amigurumi cup of hot cocoa is a cute and quick-to-make little pattern that will delight any recipient! How much fun would it be to put out an amigurumi cup of cocoa and cookies for Santa this year?

For an older child or teen, this Crochet Pillow Lips Amigurumi Pattern would make a great throw pillow for their bed. Made with fuzzy blanket yarn, this little pillow would be so cozy to snuggle up to!

For the knitters in the group looking to make a garment, the Lodgepole Cowl knitting pattern is a lovely colour-work knitting pattern, made with just two colours. Cowls make great handmade gifts because you don’t need to have someone’s exact measurements to make a garment that is going to fit and they knit up rather quickly, so you can make lots for all your friends!

If you’ve got a little more time to craft this year, you could make up one of these Winter Star Crochet Blanket Patterns and have a fabulous afghan to enjoy or delight someone with a gorgeous handmade gift!

Or if winter stars are not your thing, check out this Midnight Diamond Blanket Crochet Pattern. I love the pattern on this; it almost looks like a Scandinavian rug! I wonder if I could make it with t-shirt yarn and make a fun rug?

So, if you’re not a maker, or you are and you just don’t have time to make one of these lovely patterns, there are still makers out there who have time to make a great gift for you in time for the holidays. Like this incredible Crocheted fairy house teapot cosy from Pleasant Things Store. Remember last year when I made my teapot cosy for the silent auction? Well, this maker makes them, too! And she is far more prolific than I am! I tell ya, for all the work that goes into a piece of art like this, her prices are a good deal!

Or maybe you would prefer to give a Luxury Sparrow Beanie made by my friend Jasmine at KichekoDesigns with hand-dyed superwash Merino wool. I love the giant faux fur poms; they’re still so trendy and fun. This gorgeous hat would be loved by any recipient! If you want to make your own, you can grab the pattern from HaileyBailey.

Do you have a new baby coming into the family soon? Jasmine would also make you a Little Ombre Blanket made with naturally soft merino. Perfect baby stroller blanket! It’s such a delight to receive a handmade gift, so you can be sure to let your recipient know that this blanket was handmade in Canada by a delightful woman in Revelstoke, BC!

Pre-order your Knit Hat with Faux Fur Pom from a fellow Edmonton maker, GingerfullyCozy. This mustard yellow is such a great colour this fall; I’m so glad it’s still on-trend: it’s one of my favourite colours!

For a chunky option, GingerfullyCozy also has this cute textured knit hat with faux fur pom. The grey is so classic and goes with everything!

So, whether you’re kicking your making into high-gear this month or organizing yourself for the gift-giving season ahead, you’ve got a bunch of great options to have a lovely handmade holiday! I’m always so pleased to push handmade on people; it’s a far superior option in so many ways. If you make it yourself, you can save some money by just buying some yarn that’s within your budget and add so much value with some of your time. It makes such a special gift for the recipient because of your input of time and thought. If you buy from an independent maker, you’re usually getting a super great deal and you’re directly supporting creative handiwork! We shouldn’t lose these skills! We need to value them and we need to value the time that makers spend making and coming up with beautiful patterns for the rest of us! So, what are you waiting for? Go get one of these patterns or put your order in for a handmade item by a talented maker! Pin this for later so you can find it next time you’re looking for it.

Gifts for Knitters

If you have a knitter on your list and don’t know what to get them, well let me steer you in the right direction! When you know someone does a craft, sometimes it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the options of things that you don’t know what to do with. Well, I am here to guide you!

A yarn bowl is always a great idea for a lovely gift for a knitter. Many knitters don’t own one yet (even me)! I usually wind a center-pull ball, but a yarn bowl is still a lovely knitting accessory and isn’t this wooden one beautiful?

Here’s another super adorable yarn bowl. Don’t you love this ceramic sheep yarn bowl? So cute.

Unique buttons also make a lovely gift. It’s always great to have an assortment on hand for finishing up a project without having to go shopping for buttons. And sometimes buttons can inspire a project all by themselves. These gorgeous carved wooden bird buttons are adorable and so unique! I love handmade!

These boho painted wooden buttons are another great option, if your recipient are a trendy button option. How fun would it be to give such a simple, but special and thoughtful gift from an independent artisan?

Stitch markers also make a lovely little gift, a perfect little stocking stuffer. Check out these adorable sheep stitch markers… so cute.

Alternatively, if your recipient is more of the minimalist type, these delicate raindrop shaped brass stitch markers are another stitch marker gift.

I have never knit with a knitting ring before, but they look so interesting. If your knitting loved one does a lot of colour-work, then they might like to figure out how to knit or crochet with one of these knitting rings

Almost any knitter would be delighted with some luxurious, wonderfully-coloured yarn. Check out this gorgeous autumn colourway wool yarn from Fashion Touch Supplies.

Or a full kit full of yarn enough for a complete shawl in a teal to browns. So many knitters will have spent the pre-Christmas season making gifts for others. What a delight it would be to be given supplies to make a lovely treat for themselves!

I hope you find these suggestions helpful for shopping for the knitter in your life! Pin it on Pinterest to share with your friends or find it later!
