Cozy Men’s Cardigan Patterns to Knit and Crochet

My husband has put in a request for a sweater. He doesn’t do this a lot, even though he does love clothes and fashion. He knows that most commercially available sweaters are far more affordable to buy than to have me make. The cardigan he has requested is pictured below. It’s a cashmere cardigan, which means that it is pretty pricey from the store (but still probably less expensive than I could make it for if I were to use cashmere yarn). But it is nice to have something special and handmade and I can adjust it so it fits him the way he wants. And I get the fun (fun?) of figuring out a new pattern. It doesn’t look overly complicated, other than sorting out the collar/opening, but it just occurred to me this morning that the last cardigan I made for myself is a pretty similar construction, so I might begin with that as a starting point.

If you don’t have a wife/partner who will devote hours of their life to knitting a cardigan for you with out a pattern, you can buy one of these here. Or if you don’t want to try to figure out your own pattern to make your beloved a beautiful handmade cardigan, check out some of these patterns for some great options.

You could try the Easy Men’s Hooded Jacket from Vintage Pattern Faves. I think the first sweater I ever knit had a hood, but it was a 3-month old size, for my firstborn. I can’t remember if I kept it (shame if I didn’t). It was yellow with cute red ladybug buttons. It took way less time than a long hooded cardigan like this one would take, but I really love the relaxed style of this cardigan.

I shall not exclude the crocheters from this collection of men’s cardigans and sweaters. Check out the Mountain Ridge Men’s Cardigan Crochet Pattern from MJs Off The Hook Designs if you are a crocheter wanting to try making a cardigan for your loved one or yourself.

This Willem Cardigan Crochet Pattern from Home of the Hook also has a hood! Hooded cardigans for every kind of fibre artist! I would put some pockets on this bad boy (because everyone needs more pockets!), but this one is also pretty cool as is.

The Gear Cardigan Knitting Pattern from Vi Talina Craft is a pattern I considered basing my husband’s cardigan off of. It has a really different collar though, and I think that’s the tricky part. I do love the texture on this cardigan. How do we feel about no buttons on this guy? And also, dammit, where are the pockets?!

The Men’s Easy Knit Cardigan Knitting Pattern from Hobo Hooks gets a pass on no pockets because it’s not a big chunky cardigan. It looks like it would be a relatively quick knit and has a timeless style that I think any guy would appreciate.

Ok, maybe I should just show my husband this bad boy and call it a day. The Men’s Striped Cardigan with Pockets Knitting Pattern from Best Knitting PDF has it all: stripes? Check! Integrated pockets? Check! Oversized shawl collar? Check! Stylish, waist-cinching tie? Check!

Ok, back to crochet. I’m not sure how I feel about this Men’s Crochet Double Fronted Cardigan from Seyhall Crochet Design… it’s not totally my jam, but I do appreciate the wide shawl collar and I love the textural elements. If you’re a crocheter looking for a double-breasted (or double-fronted? What’s up with that?) cardigan sweater pattern for your beau, this is just the thing!

Here’s a gender-neutral cardigan for you. If you need some motivation to make a cardigan for your man, perhaps you can motivate yourself by imagining yourself borrowing it? The Field Day Jacket Knit Cardigan Sweater Pattern from Ozetta is the perfect sweater to borrow for a cozy night in or a stylish walk to the coffee shop.

This Vintage Men’s Cabled Cardigan Knitting Pattern from Hobo Hooks has subtle cables down the sleeves and button band and your man will look just as dapper as this dude wearing this cardigan with integrated pockets that are so nice this guy doesn’t even want to put his hands in them!

Ok, I know we’ve veered away from the cardigan here, but I was perusing looking at all the men’s sweater options in order to find something I might be able to modify. The Men’s Ribbed Sweater Knitting Pattern from Knit a Pattern is a beautiful ribbed knit sweater pattern that is another timeless classic if you are looking for one.

If you’re looking to get started with something simpler, the Men’s Easy Beginner Sweater Pullover Knitting Pattern from Vintage Pattern Faves is another stylish and timeless knit sweater pattern for you to check out. It is made with chunky yarn, so it works up quickly and you’ll be borrowing this sweater from your man in no time!

Ok, now here we are with the ladies. Sorry. I think the Meara Fisherman Cable Sweater Crochet Pattern from Hopeful Honey Designs is a gender-neutral cable sweater pattern that anyone could wear. It’s another classic. And did you see??? It’s CROCHET. Crocheted cables. So awesome… and cozy!

When I saw this Men’s Striped Raglan Pullover Sweater Knitting Pattern from Hobo Hooks, it reminded me of the colours of the cardigan that my husband wants. And honestly, I’m not finding exactly what I’m looking for so far, which is a little disappointing. I hope I can find a nice yarn in the colours he wants! Colour blocking is still pretty in right now, so this throwback vintage pattern is right on trend. So pick it up and get making today!

I hope you found a men’s cardigan or sweater pattern here to make for the man in your life (or yourself!). Grab a pattern and some yarn and get making today. Or pin it for later!

If you’re feeling ambitious and have some time to knit over the next month, this stunning The Nelson Pullover Knitting Pattern from Irmian Design is a classic and stylish knit men’s sweater pattern with Aran cables down the shoulders and sleeves. Your dad (or your kids’ dad) is sure to love this sweater!

The Dapper Dad Pullover Crochet Pattern from MJs Off the Hook Designs is a cabled sweater that is CROCHETED! This cozy sweater is modern and stylish and would look great dressed up for a special occasion or warm and casual for sitting around the campfire. This is a size-inclusive pattern with sizes for chest measurements from 34 inches to 64 inches.

I know I don’t usually share a lot of sewing patterns here, but I stumbled across this great Basic Hoodie with Mask Sewing Pattern from Barbarikum Gold that I thought was just fantastic. With a built-in mask, this hoodie looks good whether the mask is up or down or the hood is up or down. And masks don’t just come in handy during global pandemics: they also keep your face warm in the wind! I love the longer length, the front pocket, and the straight, unisex profile. I might just make one of these for myself! The pattern includes 7 sizes from Small to 4XL. You can download and print this pdf pattern on standard 8.5 x 11″ paper and get sewing this hooded sweatshirt today!

If you don’t have quite enough time to knit, crochet or sew a sweater for that special dad in your life, you might have enough time to make him a pair of slippers. This easy crochet pattern from Crochet Milie for Comfy Slippers for Men and Women looks like it would work up quickly for a pair of simple and modern home shoes, perfect for dad!

For a similar loafer-style slipper in a knitting pattern, the All Seasons Slippers Knitting Pattern from by Eline for both men and women, with sizes in Small, Medium, and Large. The sides are knit in brioche stitches (which I still have yet to try!) This pattern is also available in German!

If you both knit and crochet, you can make a pair of these stretchy Mule Slippers for Men from Katu Made. The sole is crocheted and the top is knit. As well, there are instructions for sewing onto a rubber sole to make these slippers super durable.

The Canadians are going to love this pattern! The Beer Thirty Mitten Cozy Crochet Pattern from Sweet Potato 3 Patterns is perfect for early summer camping weekends and sitting by the fire with a drink. The cup cozy has a bottom so you can’t easily drop this drink and it both protects your hand from the temperature of your drink as well as the elements. Maybe the men don’t need this as badly as I do, as my hands are often cold, but it’s such a fun idea and it will make a great conversation piece.

The Beer Mug Beer Cozy Crochet Pattern from You Should Craft is a quick and festive pattern full of fun for dad. Help keep his beer cold and hands warm with this fun beer mug cozy! These work up quickly with worsted yarn, so if you’re looking for something quick, this is your pattern!

Did you know that wool is an insulating fibre? It’s great for keeping things warm and cool! So if you had some wool around, it would make a great yarn for these beer cozy patterns! If you don’t know where to start, KnitPicks has a great selection of wool yarns at affordable prices; the Wool of the Andes yarns would work great for these.

Here’s a quick knitted project for you: The Knitted Bow Tie Pattern from Yorokobiness is a quick little pattern available in both English and Italian. The vintage style of this fun loom-knit pattern will delight your stylish dad. The seed stitch adds a lovely texture and keeps the piece nice and flat!

If you don’t have the skills to make your own crochet beer cozy or knit your dad a tie, you can still get your dad something handmade and special like this adorable beer mug Father’s Day Card from DiMon Handmade. You’ll have to get going on ordering this so it arrives in time for dad’s special day. If you can crochet, you can probably figure out how to make something like this! I couldn’t find a pattern, but give a go and see what you come up with!

Here’s a DIY that you could totally do! You can get a Personalized Paint by Number Kit from Shining Gift Design! Paint your own picture with a custom kit including everything you need to DIY your own custom painting from a beloved picture! Dad would be sure to love this!

Make it Funny

This Father’s Day weekend is also the same weekend as my son’s birthday. And both my son and his father are funny. In quite different ways, as my husband is a comedian and my son loves puns. His father does not like puns. Anyway, here is a little collection of funny patterns to make, most of them crochet patterns, but one funny little cross-stitch at the end.

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

While my husband (along with a lot of people, actually) is kind of afraid of clowns, the classic guy to make you laugh is a clown. If you’re trying to inoculate your children against clown fear, perhaps you can make them a clown from this Amigurumi Clown Crochet Pattern and they will associate clowns with happy toys. Otherwise, they can just avoid clowns altogether, like my family tries to do.

I love to find subtle funny things hiding places, like these Crochet Eyeball Headrest Covers. I think it would just delight me to sit 50 meters away from my car and watch people walk by to see their reactions when they notice these silly headrest covers.

Here’s a great father’s day-inspired crochet pattern you could probably whip up before the day was done. This Crochet Beer Mug Pattern would be a fun piece of decor for the den or the basement bar.

I made my son an oreo ice cream cake for his birthday this year, but he might have appreciated a cake made from this Amigurumi Birthday Cake Crochet Pattern. I don’t know if it would be worth it for him though. He is thirteen now and although I’m in no hurry for him to grow up beyond cute anthropomorphic cakes, I think he might not enjoy this for much longer than the initial reaction.

If you’d like to make your dog something to laugh at, you can dress him up like a bear if you make this Bear Headband for Dog Crochet Pattern. Ah? I’m all for making dogs look silly. Is it cruel? I don’t know, I don’t have a dog. But it doesn’t seem like they mind you laughing at them.

Of course for the cat loves in the bunch there’s the Crochet Cat Butt Coaster Crochet Pattern. 100% of sales proceeds for the month of June (2020) are going to the Black Lives Matter movement, which is awesome, so go grab one of these cute patterns today! My question is… do cat loves love cat butts? Like, as much as I think this is funny, I just don’t know anyone who is serving up their coffee on cat butt coasters…

This is probably more my style of cheeky decor: the Crochet Cactus Pillow Cover Pattern would make a fun piece of decor with a little nod to your favourite succulent, as well as some ’80s hip hop.

I guess it’s a familiar trope that marriage is like a ball and chain? It’s not something I’ve heard a lot recently, but if you are going to make the joke, you can accompany it with a prop made from this Prison Ball and Chain Crochet Pattern. It would make a great costume prop as well for a prisoner costume.

Here’s a fun little cheeky rattle pattern for ya. This Boobie Baby Rattle Crochet Pattern would be a fun little gift for new parents who don’t take themselves too seriously. Babies don’t care what their toys look like, but parents can find some humour in them.

Honestly, you’d be surprised how many penis-inspired crochet patterns there are. If you’re looking for that kind of thing, people seem to like this Penis Can Cozy. Looks a little cumbersome, but good for a laugh.

It is really funny what we find funny. Not sure if I’m going to go this far to make a cross-stitch like this Bathroom Rating Cross Stitch for my bathroom, but it is kind of hilarious to imagine a bathroom rating site. ratemybathroom.com?

I hope you enjoyed this collection of funny patterns to make. Enjoy the funny people in your life today and don’t take yourself too seriously in your making! Life’s too short to be grumpy about crafts! Grab a pattern and make one today or pin it for later!

Men’s Hat Patterns

A lot of knitters and crocheters are people who have men in their lives that they love to make things for. But many of us are attracted to fun pompoms, complicated stitch patterns, and slouchy hats that the dudes in our lives would just not be into. And I’m guilty of this, too. So if you’re looking for some simple, manly hat patterns, you’ve come to the right place. And most of these are crochet! I often lean towards knitting patterns when knitting for men because the fabric ends up being thinner, which is what Mr Evangelist prefers, so I know what a challenge it can be for crocheters to find a good men’s hat pattern. But there are plenty included here! Check them out and try one today!

Who says men’s hats have to be plain? This textured Arrowhead Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern is a great example of a manly hat pattern with a lovely stitch pattern. This pattern comes in 6 sizes, from baby to adult large, so you can make one for the whole family! Add a pompom if you like and it’s a stylish hat for anyone! CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE ARROWHEAD BEANIE PATTERN.

And who says men and boys can’t wear a slouchy hat? Check out this lovely Portland Slouchy Hat and Cowl Set Crochet Pattern. It mimics a knit seed stitch and has a lovely slight slouch to it. It comes in 5 sizes from 6 months to adult, so again, you can make this set for anyone in the family! CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE PORTLAND SLOUCHY HAT AND COWL SET CROCHET PATTERN.

If you’re a new crocheter, The Perfect Slouch and Ribbed Scarf Crochet Pattern Set might just be more your speed. This simple hat is perfect for a beginner as it’s an easy to follow pattern with plenty of helpful photos. It requires only basic crochet skills and materials and is worked seamlessly in the round. CLICK HERE FOR THE PERFECT SLOUCH AND RIBBED SCARF CROCHET PATTERN SET.

The Brighton Beanie Crochet Hat Pattern in 6 Sizes is another lovely crochet hat pattern that has a textured stitch pattern and is totally family-friendly! It has some optional add-ons such as flowers if that’s your thing (perfect for little girls) and also looks great with a faux fur pompom! CLICK HERE FOR THE BRIGHTON BEANIE CROCHET HAT PATTERN.

Who says men’s hat patterns have to be solid colours? The Big Bay Beanie Crochet Pattern is a great multi-coloured pattern worked up with chunky weight yarn in 5 colours and it’s simple enough for a beginner/advanced beginner. I believe this pattern is also available for free on the designer’s blog, but for just a few bucks you can grab an easy-to-read, printable pdf pattern: CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE BIG BAY BEANIE CROCHET PATTERN.

Simple hats like the Basic Knit Beanie for Men and Boys Knitting Pattern is the kind of pattern I usually make for Mr Evangelist. He’s already got a pretty big head, so he doesn’t want to add the bulk of a thick and chunky hat to it. Also, while he’s trying to stay warm, sometimes those chunky hats make him too hot. He’s already pretty hot (woot woot!) so we don’t want to overdo it. 😉 The decreases on this knit hat pattern make a lovely swirled crown that sits nice and flat on the head. It’s a great guide to learning decreases. CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE BASIC KNIT BEANIE FOR MEN AND BOYS KNITTING PATTERN.

For a slightly textured ribbed crochet hat pattern, check out this Men’s Slouchy Knit-Look Crochet Hat Pattern. I love that it’s not super slouchy. That’s just the right amount of slouch for the men that I know. This is an intermediate crochet pattern in two adult sizes. It uses worsted weight yarn, so it’s a lovely project for some of that worsted weight yarn you have in your stash. CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE MEN’S SLOUCHY KNIT-LOOK CROCHET HAT PATTERN.

The Fisherman’s Cap Crochet Beanie Pattern is such a classic pattern that you can’t miss out on it. It’s a perfect beginner pattern made with basic stitches, so if you’re just learning, this pattern is for you! CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE FISHERMAN’S CAP CROCHET BEANIE PATTERN.

The Ribbed Wonder Crochet Hat Pattern is another super easy beginner crochet pattern for a classic simple crochet hat using chunky weight yarn. This works up quickly to make a timeless hat that the man in your life will love. I believe this pattern is also available for free on the designer’s blog, but I love to have a pattern I can print out, take with me and mark up as I go. For just a few bucks, it’s absolutely worth it! CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE RIBBED WONDER CROCHET HAT PATTERN.

The Ripple Hat Crochet Pattern is simple to follow and comes in 4 sizes using under 100 grams of worsted weight yarn and a size H (5 mm) crochet hook. The lovely texture on this pattern makes a great unisex pattern that men, boys and women and girls will all love! CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE RIPPLE HAT CROCHET PATTERN.

This Reversible Knit-Look Beanie Crochet Pattern in 6 Sizes is another hat that Mr Evangelist would be a fan of. So if you’re looking for something streamlined and simple for the man in your life, that looks store-bought, this crochet pattern is for you! I love the look of it and it really does look knit, don’t you think!? And it’s completely reversible! How cool is that?! CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE REVERSIBLE KNIT-LOOK BEANIE PATTERN.

Maybe you’re not looking for a beanie pattern, but something with a little more flair? Or perhaps for a costume? The Fedora Crochet Pattern in 9 sizes is a super fun summer hat pattern comes in 9 sizes so you could make one for a newborn (!HOW CUTE WOULD THAT BE?!) and your grandpa. So fun. CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE FEDORA CROCHET PATTERN.

Or maybe you need a Newsies kind of a hat? The Belmont Scally Cap Newsboys Hat Pattern is a classic 1920’s hat pattern so that you can join in with the Peaky Blinders style. It also includes a bonus size for an 18″ doll! How cute would that be?! CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE BELMONT SCALLY CAP NEWSBOYS HAT PATTERN.

Of course, if you’re really looking for a costume hat or a fun pattern for a little boy, this Knight Helmet Crochet Hat Pattern is a ton of fun. For those of us in cold climates, Halloween can be unpredictable, but it is usually chilly here, so a warm hat to wear out trick-or-treating is a great idea. And many little boys like to play pretend year-round, so a fun hat like this knight helmet can be made for Halloween and worn all winter long! CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE KNIGHT HELMET CROCHET HAT PATTERN.

The Lael Viking Hat Crochet Pattern is another great hat that can be used as a costume or simply a fun hat to keep your little one’s head warm. It comes in three sizes, but it makes a stretchy hat that can be worn by multiple head sizes. CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE LAEL VIKING HAT CROCHET PATTERN.

I know I usually focus on knit and crochet patterns in this blog, but I came across this Leather Bowler Hat Pattern and Video Tutorial and thought it was so cool that I had to share it with you all. So, whether you’re into steampunk or just leather crafting or just have a general appreciation for handmade hats, this cool pattern is for you.
