I couldn’t resist this adorable little Hedgehog with a Heart Crochet Pattern from My Crochet Wonders, so I snapped it up shortly after it was released! Little amigurumi patterns like this are delightful because they’re so quick and rewarding to make up! You can sit down a couple of times in a weekend and have an adorable little stuffy. I was still in winter holiday mode when I saw this and I thought since it’s so ball-like, you could hang a little string from it and have a super sweet little tree ornament!

This Fleece Teddy & Bunny Crochet Pattern from All About Ami would be such a thoughtful gift for a little one that you love. It is made with Lionbrand Go for Fleece Yarn, which works up quickly and fills in all the little “holes” of crochet and is super fuzzy and cuddly. I think I have at least one kid who would still enjoy one of these delightful little stuffed animals!

It’s not always easy for knitters to find cute stuffed animal patterns, but this collection of 6 Teddy Bear Variations from Mary Jane’s Tea Room has a variety of options for you to make six different teddy bears. Sweet little skirts and bows for the hair and adorable little shorts and shoes options allow you to customize a cuddly knitted bear stuffy for someone you love. This guy is so sweet and fun, you know you want to make one! And it’s such a deal of a pattern!

Stephanie from All About Ami just released her new Chinese New Year Tiger Crochet Pattern. This is another beautiful pattern by Stephanie; her designs are always great and also available for free on her blog. She is definitely a designer worth following!

Snuggly Handmade Socks to Knit and Crochet

I finally did it! This was the year I knit myself some socks! They’re so great: I love them! They’re so warm! If you want to see my process and finished knit socks, follow me on Instagram to see all the patterns I make! If you have not experienced the joy and warmth of handmade wool socks, you need to get your hands (…feet?) on some of these! I’ve collected a bunch of great sock patterns for you to try out, whether you knit or crochet!

First, for the knitters: The Thicksgiving Socks from Summer Lee Design Co. These socks are an easy, basic, worsted weight sock knitting pattern with three different variations. Theh pattern set includes tips and tricks for working worsted socks by marling two strands of fingering weight yarn together.

The Vanilla Socks on DPNs knitting pattern by Crazy Sock Lady Designs is another straightforward sock design. If you prefer double-pointed needles or that’s all you have, this pattern is for you, specifically designed for double-pointed needles (DPNs), it has an accompanying video tutorial that walks you through how to make the entire sock on DPNs, from setting up the Cast-On to the Kitchener-stitch toe and weaving in your ends!

The Heartnut Socks knitting pattern from Knox Mountain Knit Co is actually a physical item, unlike most of the PDF downloads that I feature here on my blog. The full colour, professionally printed knitting pattern is printed on acid-free, heirloom quality papter and includes a digital download code for Ravelry, which is definitely an interesting delivery method! Let me know if you like this and I will consider featuring something like this in my patterns! I love the beautiful and elegant heartnut inspired cable across the top, so if you’ve been wanting to make socks and also learn cables, this is the pattern for you!

If you’re looking for a deal of a pattern, this Top-Down Adult Socks Knitting Pattern from Zyapa Masha is only $0.66 Canadian! It includes 6 pages of text, charts and pictures. The socks are worked top down, using double-pointed needles OR circular needles, if you use the magic loop method (I love magic loop! I use circular needles for everything!).

If you consider yourself an intermediate knitter, then the River Ripple Socks knitting pattern by Lucy Neatby of little barn studios is the pattern for you. Perfect for showing off a skein of hand-painted yarn, the construction is beautiful! From the description: “These socks are begun with a soft faced cuff with a decorative i-cord inspired detail. This leads into the leg pattern with cabled elongated stitches to highlight the colours in the yarn. A 70% garter stitch short row heel is used (with smaller needles for added durability) and then the leg stitch pattern is reversed with a condensed stitch pattern for the sole, adding strength, warmth and maintaining equal row height with the instep pattern. Finished with a cozy garter stitch toe to coordinate with the heel.” Sounds so good, right?

The Cozy Cabin Socks knitting pattern from Darling Jadore is another lovely worsted-weight sock knitting pattern. “A classic construction with cozy knit stitches on worsted-weight yarn, The Beginner Socks pattern is perfect for first-time sock knitters and seasoned knitters alike. Designed with beginners in mind, this pattern thoroughly guides you through each step and with video guidance. You’ll be amazed by how quickly these socks knit up, and how fun they are to make.”

The House Socks knitting pattern from HandKnit Home is a great knitting pattern for a pair of cute and comfortable ankle-length socks. The pattern is written for Adult Medium size and includes instructions for adding length to the foot for a longer sock. The pattern calls for an Estonian cast on (new cast-on for me! I love learning new techniques!), but will work just as well with a regular long-tail cast on.

How about some colour-work socks? The MIEZI Sock knitting pattern from average pony gives you detailed instructions on how to knit a pair of socks with leopard spots! How cool is that?! (Also, don’t you love the bottom of the foot, too?! The pattern contains detailed descriptions on how to knit cuff, leg, shadow wrap heel, foot and toe of your new sock. The pattern is especially designed with frequent color changes so that you rarely have long floats and none is longer than 9 or 10 stitches. So it’s perfect for practicing colorwork.

While the colourwork socks may be a little more advanced than your skills, the Retro Socks knitting pattern from D19 Eco Friendly Life might be more your speed. The diamond texture adds interest, while still allowing this pattern to be classified as a beginner pattern. So, if you’ve wanted to get started with some socks, but are bored by the plain socks of traditional beginner knit sock patterns, check out this pattern

Looking for some sock yarn? KnitPicks has a wide variety of sock yarns at a variety of price points, in a wide range of fibre contents. Local yarn shops are also great place to pick up a skein of lovely sock yarn. Since you usually only need one hank of yarn for a pair of socks, it’s a great time to splurge on some hand-dyed local yarns!

Ok, now for the crocheters. We don’t immediately think crochet for socks because the fabrci that is created is typically bulkier and holier at the same time, than I prefer in a sock. But this quote from the listing for this book is worth considering: “Having been a sock knitter for many many years, when it came to crochet socks I found it difficult to find any patterns that didn’t look bulky, stiff and uncomfortable. Tempted to try my hand at knitting lacy socks but lacking the confidence, I turned to my trusty crochet stitches and a new love was born. You really can make crochet socks that are comfortable, beautiful and practical.” The Crochet Sock Collection is a physical printed booklet from Vicki Brown Designs. If you want to get going right away, though, you can add a note to the seller and you will also be sent a PDF copy. Try out some crochet socks with this great collection os 6 crochet sock patterns!

The Herringbone Socks Crochet Pattern from Heart Hook Home is a toe-up, short row heel sock using the Herringbone Half Double Crochet stitch. Available in 5 sizes from Women’s 5 to Men’s 13, you can whip up a pair of these for all your favourite poeple.

The Pearl Socks Crochet Pattern from mon petit violin was originally published in Inside Crochet magazine, issue 101. With lovely texture on the leg portion of the sock, these socks will be stunning to look at outside of the boots and perfect to wear inside of boots to keep your feet warm this winter!

The Happy Socks are an easy crochet pattern as far a socks go! This socks from this pattern by Rich Textures Crochet are made using simple single crochet stitches and worked from the cuff down. It includes a video tutorial includes the full instructions to make a women’s pair of size 5/6 (US) socks. In fact, if you don’t mind reading a pattern online, this pattern is available for free on the Rich Textures Crochet blog (there’s web address in the listing description)!

Cables are typically reserved for knitting, but the Cable Car Socks Crochet Pattern from A la Sascha incorporates beautifully textured cables into these crocheted socks that are not stiff or uncomfortable at all. These socks look so beautifully constructed, it’s very tempting to consider making many pairs of these adorable socks!

Love that Texture: Beautiful Bobble Stitch Patterns!

And now, for the crocheters! You defintely won’t be left out because there are PLENTY of bobble patterns for you! You’ll need DK yarn for this project. I would recommend KnitPicks Swish Yarn as an affordable superwash yarn in a wide variety of colours or KnitPicks CotLin (Cotton/Linen blend) which also comes in a wide variety of colours.

For a bobbly hat, check out the Posh Puffs Beanie Crochet Hat Pattern from Kathy’s Crochet Closet. Make For Your Fall Living Room

It’s been a little while since I’ve shared some crafty patterns with you all and I’ve missed it! We have been renovating our main floor this summer, so the last 3 1/2 months have been spent crafting our home! It’s been busy and hard work. We ended up having the flooring done for nearly the entire main floor all at once, which meant moving nearly all of our belongings into a storage pod for a few weeks. It was a lot of work in the middle of a summer of a lot of work! We’ve been slowly finishing up, enjoying a fully functioning kitchen and moving back in. And now it’s time to think about decorating! What better way to decorate than to make your own decor?

So, whether you’re starting from scratch decorating a new space or just freshening up with some fall decor, I’ve collected some lovely patterns to make your space homey and unique. You’re sure to enjoy making these beautiful patterns and making your space your own with them!

You probably need a place to rest your feet afert a long day and this Crocheted Bobbles Pouf from isWoolish is a cute, textured floor pouf sure to add interest and comfort to your living room! This downloadable pattern includes links to YouTube instructional videos, so if you prefer to watch step by step videos, all the resources you need are included.

Of course, if you’re a knitter, isWoolish also has athe Knitted Pouf Pattern for you! Same structure, different craft, different texture. Links to the video tutorials are also included with this pattern. If you knit and crochet, which of these poufs would you choose? Knit or crochet? I can’t decide! I love them both!

I did make my own like this one from a free pattern MJ’s Off the Hook Designs (a pdf version is also available from Etsy here). I stuffed it with an old comforter and some old pillow forms, so it’s a little wonky. I think if I were to do it again, I would get a better form for it so it kept its shape better.

If you can get your hands on some giant yarn/wool roving then you can make the stunning The Petiionville Extreme Knit Pouf pattern from DeBrosseNYC. Isn’t it fantastic? Don’t you just want one in white even though you have kids and you know a white floor pouf is a really bad idea? No? Just me? The super fun part about this pattern is that it is an arm knitting pattern! Meaning, you use your arms as knitting needles! How fun is that? If you’re new to knitting, I think you might be surprised at how accessible arm knitting is! And the larger the yarn, the fewer the stitches, meaning it takes WAAAAAY less time to knit up a project like this. So, yes, the yarn is a little pricey; but, what you spend in yarn, you save in time.

Ok, next up: throw blankets. Throw blankets make your space look warm and cozy and they keep the people in them warm and cozy. Amazing. Right now I am leaning towards making a faux fur throw blanket like The Paix Faux Fur Throw Knitting Pattern from DeBrosseNYC. You can get the pattern for free in the kit from Lion Brand Yarn.

For the crocheters, you can also crochet a throw blanket with this yarn with the Softest Blanket Crochet Pattern by KayleeKnots. I’ll give you a little warning though: while I have crocheted with this yarn (and have a crochet pattern that is soon to be released made with this yarn), it is much more difficult to keep track of your stitches with crochet than with knitting. Knitting has the stitches all perched on a needle; with crochet, you’ve got to feel your way through the project. The beautiful part about this yarn for crochet is that it hides all the holes and makes a super soft and warm blanket about 4′ x 5′ in only 6 hours!

Another direction that I am considering is adding some more pops of colour. We’ve gone pretty neutral on our finishings and furniture, so now we can add some colour with accessories! What do you think about this Pom Pom Stripe Crochet Blanket? It is available in a kit from SolidMarl; I didn’t see it listed separately in the patterns section of the shop, but a kit is always a nice way to jump into a project: getting everything you need delivered to you so you’re ready to go. Love it. I love these fun pom poms and matching stripes. Subtle, but still really fun.

Or perhaps you prefer to knit some more subtle designs into your throw blankets with this Seton Portage Blanket Knitting Pattern from KnittedWishes. The winter scene is subtle enough that it could easily be part of your decor all winter, but definitely has a classic holiday festive style for a stylish home.

I could also get on board with this Moonstone Plaid Blanket Knitting Pattern from Two of Wands. I love the neutrals in this version, but I think I would want some brighter colours for my space. What colours would you choose? If you want to make one in exactly these colours, you can grab a kit from Lion Brand Yarn (there are also options to customize the colours if you choose).

Ok, still loveing the plaid thing and of course, throw pillows are another great way to incorporate handmade items into your living room. I love this Plaid About You Throw Pillow Crochet Pattern from LuleesCrochet. This is a crochet meets weaving pattern: the pillow is crocheted corner-to-corner in the moss stitch and the woven details are worked into the front side after crocheting is complete. How fun is that?

Patterns to Make Your Own Plants and Hangers

I don’t know if your plant collection has been growing during this global panorama, but mine has! Plants are life! If you’re running out of places to put them, then I’ve got a great collection of knit and crochet planters for you to make so you can hang them on your wall or from your ceiling! If you have not had much luck with your plants, I even have a few patterns to knit or crochet your own plants, which require next to no care or green thumb at all!

The more I look at this functional little crochet pocket, the more I think I might even be able to use one of these in my kitchen for plastic lids! There have not been a lot of options for knitters this week. The dreaded lily beetle has been ravaging gardens here in Edmonton and it’s a constant battle for gardeners to keep their lilies looking beautiful with this vicious pest around. You won’t have to fight the lily beetle if you just crochet yourself some lilies instead!

Or knit yourself a little succulent. The Succulent Plant Knitting Pattern from Knit the Stars is a quick and easy pattern that will use up some of your scraps and wouldn’t these darling little plants make perfect co-worker gifts or teacher gifts or housewarming gifts?

I have not had a lot of success with growing vines, but I love it when plant hangers have long draping foliage, so I’m definitely eyeing up this 5 Crochet Plant Vines Crochet Pattern from Keeleys Crochet. The beauty of these no-maintenance plants is that you can hang them up high in a place that is difficult to get to and you don’t have to worry about watering them.

I think the plant that has gained the most popularity over the last 16 months is the monstera. Making for the Kitchen – Knit, Crochet & Sewing Patterns

We are about to head into a pretty major kitchen renovation in a few days, so I have kitchen on the brain. And while I probably won’t have a lot of extra time for making the finishing touches in the kitchen just yet, thinking about them helps me get motivated to do the dirty work of cleaning up and preparing for the weeks of chaos ahead of us. In the mean time, you all can enjoy some great modern knit and crochet patterns for the kitchen. One of the reasons I love knit and crochet so much is that you can make custom solutions for little problems in your life or just add something extra special, that matches perfectly and functions well. Check out these great patterns.

A little kitchen rug is a nice touch by the sink to add some cushion beneath your feet and absorb the little splatters from the faucet. The Modbob Rug Crochet Pattern from The Cozy Knot Crochet is a cute and modern, bobble-embellished crochet pattern that would work at a kitchen sink, as a bathmat, or as an entry rug.

If you need to get some yarn for this project, crochet.com has a great variety of cotton yarns, like Dishie… they even have the Dishie Cone, which is 400 grams of 100% cotton worsted yarn.

The Easy Kitchen Towel Topper Crochet Pattern from Stitching Together is a quick and easy kitchen towel topper that is innovatively attached to the top corner and then uses the towel itself to wrap around the handle of your stove. It makes a quick little housewarming gift when you don’t have a lot of advanced notice and it’s a great little project to use up some scrap cotton yarn. This pattern is also available for free here. Here’s another quick and useful project for you: the Sunburst Dish Scrubby Crochet Pattern from Bash Yarn Works is a super quick and functional dish scrubby made with nylon yarn or 3″ spooled tulle. So many people I know love having a handy little dish scrubby like this one in their kitchen!

DeBrosse NYC once again has a modern and gorgeous coaster pattern for your contemporary kitchen. The Croix Crochet Coaster Pattern. This stylish and modern take on the coaster provides the perfect pop of chic to your coffee table. The clean lines of the waistcoat stitch paired with the curvature of the wooden ring create a simple but stunning combination. If you haven’t checked out DeBrosse NYC patterns before, it is definitely worth your time-all of her patterns are sleek and clean and NOT your granny’s crochet patterns!

Another handy crocheted item for the kitchen is this Easy Crocheted Hanging Basket from Iknit For Cozy Home. Made with jute (or cotton: Lionbrand 24/7 Cotton is also a great choice and comes in 37 different colours! The colour Hay Bale is almost exactly a jute colour!) These hanging baskets would be great to hold plants, utensils, or other items you want to keep handy, but off your countertop!

I’m sure you were wondering how long it was going to take me to get around to the most obvious handmade kitchen accessory: the dishtowel. The Turtle Trunk has this great Farmhouse Dish Set Crochet Pattern, which includes easy patterns and instructions for three different towels: a dishcloth/washcloth pattern (8.5″ x 8.5″), a dish towel (13″ x 21″), and a hanging towel (8.5″ x 19″). Dishie yarn is a great choice for this set, too!

Don’t worry, knitters, I haven’t forgotten about you! The Ocean View Dishcloth Knitting Pattern from Goose Creek Knits is a nautical-themed dishcloth pattern and features alternating rows of garter stitch and ribbing, which keeps it laying nice and flat. Knit from corner to corner, it uses a simple combination of knit, purl, increase, and decrease stitches. This is a great beginner knitting pattern!

Are you concerned about the amount of water it takes to process cotton? Re-Up Yarn from Lion Brand is a recycled 100% cotton yarn that is great for these dishcloth patterns and other kitchen items. By using one 70 gram ball of Re-Up Yarn, you are saving 1,400 liters of water!

There are so many great options out there for knit dishcloth patterns! The Woven Waves Dish Towel knitting pattern from Nich Knits uses slip-stitch knitting to create a woven fabric using basic stitches. This pattern is beautiful, reversible, and thick enough for a great dish towel.

While not strictly a pattern for the kitchen, this Egg-cellent Apron Crochet Pattern from Heart Hook Home is just what you need if you have backyard chickens and need to collect eggs. Not only does it include individual egg pockets to accommodate 19 eggs, but there’s also a larger pocket for your cell phone, to-do list, pen, or whatever else you might need to carry. Heart Hook Home also offers this pattern for free (with ads) on her blog.

If sewing is more your jam, did you know you can buy digital sewing patterns online? The Jess Apron Sewing Pattern from Bouquet Clothing is an easy sewing pattern for beginners to make their own custom apron. This classic pattern includes options to sew a full or half vintage-inspired apron and the options for your own embellishments are details are endless!

If you prefer the casual and full coverage style of a Japanese pinafore apron, the Crossback Apron Sewing Pattern from TOTO shop UA is a lovely classic and simple apron pattern with two front large pockets. I love this style of apron because it has no ties to get tangled and wrinkled in the wash.

If you wanted to embellish your apron (or something else) with embroidery, you should check out Florals and Floss Stick and Stitch Embroidery Designs. Add your very own customization to your apron or tea towels for your own unique kitchen accessories! Perhaps when we’re all finished with our kitchen project, I’ll spend the upcoming fall and winter evenings peacefully stitching up some custom tea towels to adorn my new fun kitchen. (And maybe my family won’t use THOSE ones to mop up the dirtiest messes in the kitchen as they have with all my other new towels so that every bloody one is stained… uh oh, now I’m starting to rant; time to wrap up!)

Play with Your Knit & Crochet!

I just love the versatility of yarn crafts! You can make garments and accessories, blankets, pillows, wall hanging, but also TOYS! There are patterns for dolls, animals and stuffed friends of all kinds, but did you know you can also make interactive toys? Check out this great collection of toys and games that you can make with knit and (mostly) crochet!

I bet you weren’t thinking of chess pieces! First off, finding this pattern was inspired by my middle child who has developed a keen interest in chess. He’s quite good! He and Mr. Evangelist played 3 games last weekend and the almost 14-year old won all three games! I was crocheting while they were playing and he couldn’t find a piece, so I searched and found this incredible Set of Chess Piece Amigurumi Patterns from Vliegende Hollander includes instructions in both English and German for making all six chess pieces. Made with worsted weight yarn, they work up to be 8″-15″ tall, so it would be quite large if you made a whole set of pieces! I would love to try to make these with a smaller sized yarn to see if I really could replace the lost piece!

We also have a big soccer fan in our family. Our youngest child has dreams of playing in the pros! This Soccer Ball Crochet Pattern, also from Vliegende Hollander looks like it would be a far quicker project than a set of chess pieces (and definitely less complex). If you’re new to crochet amigurumi, this would be a great first project for you, learning to make a ball shape and adding some pentagons.

Play food is such a fun crocheted toy to make! This inventive Crocheted Peelable Watermelon pattern from honeybee69 wraps up into a round watermelon shape and is totally baby-safe with no loose or small parts. Completely wash- and dry-able, this is a lovely toy for a small child to enjoy as they mimic mom and dad cutting up their own watermelon!

Similarly, honeybee69 also has this cute Crocheted Peelable Orange Amigurumi Pattern in a series of interactive food patterns that include apples, corn, pears, bananas, kiwis, and more! Check out all of the great food patterns!

I’ve always wondered why there aren’t more crocheted puppet patterns. It seems like such a good idea! This Crocheted Giraffe Hand Puppet Pattern is an adorable, baby-safe pattern complete with 30 photos and 13 pages of detailed description for how to make this sweet and cartoonish crocheted giraffe puppet!

Alright, knitters, this one’s for you (sorry: knitting just doesn’t lend itself to toys as well as crochet does!), but this Super Sonic Froggie Knitting Pattern from Phoenix Knits just makes me smile! With elastic through his body and down his arms, he can be shot off across the room by putting a finger down each of his front feet and pulling his back legs to stretch the elastic and letting go! How fun is that!? This would make a fun and delightful little gift for a fun-loving kid in your life!

The summer heat really hit in full force for us here in Edmonton (even though it is technically still spring). Having a water balloon fight is a fun way to cool down with the kids, but I don’t like the waste and mess of conventional water balloons. If you don’t want to make your own, there are plenty of makers who will make these for you!

Even if you can’t figure out how to modify this pattern to turn make it hold your pyjamas, it’s still so full of character, it would be sure to delight any child!

The cup cozy has a bottom so you can’t easily drop this drink and it both protects your hand from the temperature of your drink as well as the elements. Maybe the men don’t need this as badly as I do, as my hands are often cold, but it’s such a fun idea and it will make a great conversation piece.

Did you know that wool is an insulating fibre? It’s great for keeping things warm and cool! So if you had some wool around, it would make a great yarn for these beer cozy patterns!
