Make For Your Fall Living Room

It’s been a little while since I’ve shared some crafty patterns with you all and I’ve missed it! We have been renovating our main floor this summer, so the last 3 1/2 months have been spent crafting our home! It’s been busy and hard work. We ended up having the flooring done for nearly the entire main floor all at once, which meant moving nearly all of our belongings into a storage pod for a few weeks. It was a lot of work in the middle of a summer of a lot of work! We’ve been slowly finishing up, enjoying a fully functioning kitchen and moving back in. And now it’s time to think about decorating! What better way to decorate than to make your own decor?

So, whether you’re starting from scratch decorating a new space or just freshening up with some fall decor, I’ve collected some lovely patterns to make your space homey and unique. You’re sure to enjoy making these beautiful patterns and making your space your own with them!

You probably need a place to rest your feet afert a long day and this Crocheted Bobbles Pouf from isWoolish is a cute, textured floor pouf sure to add interest and comfort to your living room! This downloadable pattern includes links to YouTube instructional videos, so if you prefer to watch step by step videos, all the resources you need are included.

Of course, if you’re a knitter, isWoolish also has athe Knitted Pouf Pattern for you! Same structure, different craft, different texture. Links to the video tutorials are also included with this pattern. If you knit and crochet, which of these poufs would you choose? Knit or crochet? I can’t decide! I love them both!

I did make my own like this one from a free pattern MJ’s Off the Hook Designs (a pdf version is also available from Etsy here). I stuffed it with an old comforter and some old pillow forms, so it’s a little wonky. I think if I were to do it again, I would get a better form for it so it kept its shape better.

If you can get your hands on some giant yarn/wool roving then you can make the stunning The Petiionville Extreme Knit Pouf pattern from DeBrosseNYC. Isn’t it fantastic? Don’t you just want one in white even though you have kids and you know a white floor pouf is a really bad idea? No? Just me? The super fun part about this pattern is that it is an arm knitting pattern! Meaning, you use your arms as knitting needles! How fun is that? If you’re new to knitting, I think you might be surprised at how accessible arm knitting is! And the larger the yarn, the fewer the stitches, meaning it takes WAAAAAY less time to knit up a project like this. So, yes, the yarn is a little pricey; but, what you spend in yarn, you save in time.

Ok, next up: throw blankets. Throw blankets make your space look warm and cozy and they keep the people in them warm and cozy. Amazing. Right now I am leaning towards making a faux fur throw blanket like The Paix Faux Fur Throw Knitting Pattern from DeBrosseNYC. You can get the pattern for free in the kit from Lion Brand Yarn.

For the crocheters, you can also crochet a throw blanket with this yarn with the Softest Blanket Crochet Pattern by KayleeKnots. I’ll give you a little warning though: while I have crocheted with this yarn (and have a crochet pattern that is soon to be released made with this yarn), it is much more difficult to keep track of your stitches with crochet than with knitting. Knitting has the stitches all perched on a needle; with crochet, you’ve got to feel your way through the project. The beautiful part about this yarn for crochet is that it hides all the holes and makes a super soft and warm blanket about 4′ x 5′ in only 6 hours!

Another direction that I am considering is adding some more pops of colour. We’ve gone pretty neutral on our finishings and furniture, so now we can add some colour with accessories! What do you think about this Pom Pom Stripe Crochet Blanket? It is available in a kit from SolidMarl; I didn’t see it listed separately in the patterns section of the shop, but a kit is always a nice way to jump into a project: getting everything you need delivered to you so you’re ready to go. Love it. I love these fun pom poms and matching stripes. Subtle, but still really fun.

Or perhaps you prefer to knit some more subtle designs into your throw blankets with this Seton Portage Blanket Knitting Pattern from KnittedWishes. The winter scene is subtle enough that it could easily be part of your decor all winter, but definitely has a classic holiday festive style for a stylish home.

I could also get on board with this Moonstone Plaid Blanket Knitting Pattern from Two of Wands. I love the neutrals in this version, but I think I would want some brighter colours for my space. What colours would you choose? If you want to make one in exactly these colours, you can grab a kit from Lion Brand Yarn (there are also options to customize the colours if you choose).

Also, complete side note, but see those tassels on there? They don’t look like they use this technique, but I think they should absolutely be made with the Twisted Fringe technique, as explained here at Briana K Designs. No fraying! No knotting! I love this technique!

Ok, still loveing the plaid thing and of course, throw pillows are another great way to incorporate handmade items into your living room. I love this Plaid About You Throw Pillow Crochet Pattern from LuleesCrochet. This is a crochet meets weaving pattern: the pillow is crocheted corner-to-corner in the moss stitch and the woven details are worked into the front side after crocheting is complete. How fun is that?

The On the Bias Throw Pillow Knitting Pattern from Two of Wands is also worked diagonally in the garter stitch, so if you are new to knitting, this pillow cover is perfect for you!

I also LOOOOOOVE The Labadee Diamond Bobble Pillow from DeBrosseeNYC! I think I’ve featured this pattern two or three times already. One of these days, I will make it! Patterns to Make Your Own Plants and Hangers

I don’t know if your plant collection has been growing during this global panorama, but mine has! Plants are life! If you’re running out of places to put them, then I’ve got a great collection of knit and crochet planters for you to make so you can hang them on your wall or from your ceiling! If you have not had much luck with your plants, I even have a few patterns to knit or crochet your own plants, which require next to no care or green thumb at all!

This Air Plant Holder from La Leh Crochet is perfect for silk plants or air plants. I bet you could even get a small succulent in this little planter and hang it from a wall just about anywhere. This simple little pattern will work up quickly and use up a bit of scrap yarn. This kind of project is perfect to bring in the car with you (while someone else drives!) and make on the go!

This set of 5 Hanging Crochet Planter Patterns from Of Mars is a great way to get a variety of planters made for your home. While I myself have not done macrame since my Girl Guide days in the ’80s (unless you count my friendship bracelet making days of the ’90s), the Luna Macrame Wall Plant Hanger Pattern from cotton dreamer is totally inspiring me to pick up some macrame cotton and tie some knots! The more I look at this functional little crochet pocket, the more I think I might even be able to use one of these in my kitchen for plastic lids! I love how crochet can mimic other crafts, like this Macrame-Inspired Boho Plant Hanger Crochet Pattern from Simply Made By Erin. The chevron pattern around the planter would make in blend in nicely with modern decor. I love these planters made in neutral colours like this, but anything that would work for your space is acceptable. What would you do? Bright colours or muted neutrals?

There have not been a lot of options for knitters this week. This realistic looking crocheted tiger lily is stunning! I missed this pattern in my February bouquet round up, but I didn’t want to forget it altogether! The dreaded lily beetle has been ravaging gardens here in Edmonton and it’s a constant battle for gardeners to keep their lilies looking beautiful with this vicious pest around. You won’t have to fight the lily beetle if you just crochet yourself some lilies instead!

Or knit yourself a little succulent. The Succulent Plant Knitting Pattern from Knit the Stars is a quick and easy pattern that will use up some of your scraps and wouldn’t these darling little plants make perfect co-worker gifts or teacher gifts or housewarming gifts?

I have not had a lot of success with growing vines, but I love it when plant hangers have long draping foliage, so I’m definitely eyeing up this 5 Crochet Plant Vines Crochet Pattern from Keeleys Crochet. The beauty of these no-maintenance plants is that you can hang them up high in a place that is difficult to get to and you don’t have to worry about watering them.

I think the plant that has gained the most popularity over the last 16 months is the monstera. Learn to Crochet This Year!

Happy New Year! This year, diets are out and learning is IN! It’s a great year to learn a new craft, like crochet. Since we are all still staying home for a while and it’s a little chilly here in Edmonton, there’s no better time to learn to crochet. I learned to crochet just before Christmas break one year in college. She taught me one stitch: single crochet. That Christmas break, I crocheted a rather large blanket in single crochet and gave it as a gift to my friend. It was probably not very good. I crocheted VERY loosely with the wrong sized hook. My mom tried to teach me double crochet because she noticed how loosely I was crocheting and double crochet would have sped up the process, but I was a stubborn cow, so I said no and tediously finished my project. Now it’s come back around because my kids don’t really like to learn from me either, so I guess it runs in the family. Anyway, all that to say, learning to crochet can happen at any age and if you have a mom/grandma/friend who will teach you, you should accept some help and then you will be able to make some of these cute crochet patterns even sooner. FREE PATTERN: Gnome Tea Towel Topper Crochet Pattern

Hello friends! I am taking a slight diversion from my regularly scheduled sharing of other people’s patterns and here I am sharing my own. I just wrote this pattern today, so it’s super fresh and it’s super-fast, just in time for last-minute gifts for friends, family and colleagues who you want to give something special to, but you have no idea what to get them? Got a nephew who is too old for $20 in a card, but you still want to give a little gift to? Perfect! Got a mom who has everything? She would be delighted by this little handy character! Got a co-worker you hardly know that gave you an unexpected gift and you want to reciprocate? I gotcha.

Meet Snaanbag, the Tea Towel Topper Gnome! Even better, Snaanbag isn’t just a tea towel topper, he’s a tea towel holder! That’s right! He’s got a wooden ring that holds your tea towel so you can easily wash it. You can make this adorable gnome in neutral or Christmassy colours, depending on your mood or decor. He’s a little grumpy, but if you dry your hands quickly on his beard, you’ll be ok.

Supplies

Crochet Hook: H/8 or 5.00 mm hook
Yarn Weight: (4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight (I used Red Heart Super Saver)
Yarn colours: Hat: Grey (or colour of your choice) Nose: Beige (or colour of your choice)
Stitch markers (1 of any kind, 2 locking), yarn needle, needle & thread for stitching button
Embellishments: 60 mm (2.5 in) wooden ring – measurement taken from the outer edges of ring. (You can also use a covered elastic hair tie), 15 mm (.6 in) button, small amount of polyfill for nose

Finished Size

Tip of the hat to bottom of nose unfolded, laid flat, length: 22 cm (8.625 in).
Folded & buttoned: 11 cm.
The hat only unfolded, laid flat: 20 cm (8 in).
At the widest point of hat, width: 11 cm (4.25 in)

US Terminology

Rnd = Round
MC = Magic Circle
SC = Single Crochet
St = Stitch
YO = Yarn Over
Inv Dec = Invisible Decrease

Special Techniques

Invisible Fasten off – Pull yarn tail through loop and thread onto a yarn needle. Skipping the stitch next to the last stitch of the Rnd, insert the needle under the top 2 loops of the next stitch (where you would insert your hook for a stitch) and pull yarn through. Insert the needle into the middle of the last stitch of the round and down through to the back of the work. Secure yarn by weaving the yarn under 2-4 stitches; do not cut excess tail yarn. (Crochet Arcade has a good tutorial if you need more visuals.)

Invisible Decrease – insert hook under front loop of the first stitch and leave the loop on the hook. Insert hook under front loop of next stitch, YO, pull through 2 (front) loops on hook, YO, pull through 2 loops on hook to complete SC. (All About Ami has a good tutorial!)

Hat

Rnd 1: 5 SC into a MC. (5 sts)

Rnd 2: 2 SC in 1^st st. Place marker in 1^st st of Rnd. SC to marker. (6 sts)

Always place the marker back in the 1st st of the new Rnd.

Rnd 3-21: Repeat Rnd 2 until you have 25 st in the Rnd. (7-25 sts)

Rnd 22 (add the ring): 2 SC in 1^st st, SC 4, SC 8 around the wooden ring: Place wooden ring under working yarn, behind the work (inside the hat). Insert hook in next stitch and YO under the ring, pull through 1 loop, YO above the ring and pull through 2 loops, completing the SC (8 times total). SC to marker. (26 sts)

Rnd 23-32: Repeat Rnd 2. (27-36 sts)

At this point, the wooden ring should be hidden when the hat is laid flat. If it is not, repeat Rnd 2 until it is. If you need more rows here, your st count total will differ from the pattern going forward.

Place nose positioning markers: Before continuing, place 2 locking markers 2 sts from start of Rnd and 10 sts from start of Rnd on the right side of the work. These will remain in place until the nose is positioned.

Rnd 33 (make the button hole): 2 SC in 1^st st. SC 12. Ch 1. Skip next st. SC around to marker. (37 sts)

Rnd 34: 2 SC in 1^st st, SC around, treating Ch 1 as a st. (38 st)

Ensure you can fit your button through the button hole you have created.

Cut yarn, leaving a 46 cm (18 in) tail.

Use the Invisible Fasten Off technique, weaving the yarn in the direction of where the nose will be placed and DO NOT CUT the excess yarn tail. We will use this yarn to secure the nose in place.

Attach the button

Lay the hat flat with the ring at the back. Secure the button in between Rnds 3 & 4, in the centre of the front of the hat, when laid flat.

Nose

Rnd 1: 5 SC in MC. (5 sts)

Place the marker in the 1^st st of Rnd 2. Always place marker back in 1st st of Rnd.

Rnd 2: 2 SC in each st around. (10 sts)

Rnd 3: *2 SC in st, SC. Repeat from * around to marker. (15 sts)

Rnds 4-6: SC around to marker. (15 sts)

Rnd: 7: *Inv Dec, SC. Repeat from * around to marker. (10 sts) Stuff firmly with polyfil.

Rnd 8: Inv Dec around to marker (5 sts)

Cut yarn leaving a 20 cm (8 in) tail and pull through. Thread a yarn needle and weave the needle through the front loops of the 5 stitches of the last Rnd. Pull to tighten and fasten off. Weave the tail inside the stuffing of the nose cut the excess yarn.

Attach the nose

Position the nose with Rnd 1 facing out and between the 2 markers on the underside of the hat along Rnd 5 of the nose. Using the excess tail yarn from the hat, attach the nose with by pushing the needle through one stitch of Rnd 5 of the nose and to the front of the hat. Backstitch along Rnd 32 of the hat onto Rnd 5 of the nose, using the previously placed markers to position the nose. Secure and weave tail through 5-10 stitches of the hat and ending in the nose. Pull slightly and snip tail yarn so the end disappears into the stuffing of the nose.

That’s it! Loop your new little friend to your stove handle or your dishwasher handle and add a tea towel (I like these ones!) to the wooden ring and you can dry your hands on his beard until it’s time for it to be washed!

As we become further and further buried under snow here in Edmonton, there is an extreme pull to sit under blankets and cuddle up with a blanket and a project. And there are few things more satisfying to make than Amigurumi stuffed toys! They are relatively quick to make, they often allow you to use up yarn you already have in your stash and it’s just so fun to see the character of them come alive as you work! Crochet Cushions & Throws

Cushions and throws are a great way to add a new twist to your decor. It’s easy to re-purpose an old pillow by putting a new cover on it. They’re also perfect to make this time of year as it grows warmer outside and you don’t want a heavy project sitting on your lap. Crocheted cushions are great projects to work on while you travel, too! I know not many of us are travelling these days, so taking a smaller project to make on the deck is also a good idea.

Even though we’re still working on our bathroom renovation (and I don’t plan on putting any throw cushions in there), all this renovating (as it creeps into more and more rooms in the house) has me thinking about refreshing the decor all over our house. New covers for cushions are a great way to use up a few skeins of yarn and add a fresh new look to (almost) any room! So check out these great cushions and throws crochet patterns that I’ve curated for you!

I love crocheting in the round and this pillow pattern looks like it would work up quickly, keeping my interest with the embossed design on the front.

The bobbles and tassels make this cushion cover interesting to crochet, but also a lovely textural experience to just cuddle up to and play with while watching TV.

And it’s so easy to be inspired to make this cushion in whatever colours suit your taste! This would look great in a teen’s room as well, with a funky and fun vibe, but not too baby-ish.

While it’s not a cushion, this Love for Frida Blankie Crochet Pattern would make a great throw blanket to add a splash of colour to any room with a fun vintage vibe. If you love Frida Kahlo and her bright and colourful style, you’ll definitely be inspired to make this colourful blanket! It’s a flexible pattern that can be modified easily to use up your existing stash! There’s nothing better than a project that you don’t have to buy more yarn for!

Haha, I bet you weren’t thinking this when you were thinking cushions. But this Cactus Pincushion Crochet Pattern is such a fun little project idea. Super quick to make up and it would make an excellent gift for someone who loves to sew. I definitely think I need one of these in my craft room!

I know I’m not exactly sticking to the theme here today, but I think this Dahlias and Leaves Tapestry Crochet Bag Pattern is so lovely and I think you could easily modify it to close it up and make it a throw pillow. But how cute is this pattern? Love it!

Father’s Day is coming up and you probably don’t have quite enough time to make this Crocheted Cheeseburger Ottoman Pattern unless you start crocheting like a mad-woman, but isn’t it so fun? This would be so fun in a family room, a game room, or a teen’s room. Such a fun idea!

A throw can be a cushion, a blanket or a rug! Check out this Black and White Scandinavian Rug Crochet Pattern. Isn’t it fun? I’m definitely feeling this vibe for our family room, whenever we get to that project (but it’s coming up more and more in conversation these days, so *fingers crossed*!). I’ve been wanting to crochet a rug for a while and this one seems like just the right vibe. Simple, but with enough changes in the pattern to keep me interested.

So back to pillows! This Cowhide Pillow Cover Crochet Pattern is so funky and no cows have to be harmed in its making! I love the funky cowhide inspiration, here! Perfect for a farmhouse vibe or a great gift for a farm family!

I also love this Tropical Leaf Pillow Cover Crochet Pattern. All these different designs on pillows are so fun to cycle into your decor. All you need to do is put a button or zipper closure on this lovely pillow cover and you can easily store away the cover and cycle it in at the start of a new season.

I’m also loving this Super Star Pillow Cover Crochet Pattern. It totally reminds me of the Dr Seuss “The Sneeches” story. But, you know, if you made it in blue and white, you’d have a fun American flag-inspired pillow to display for Independence Day celebrations (you know, if you’re into that… I’m Canadian, so it’s not really my thing, but the stars are pretty cool). This throw pillow would also go well in a beachy themed room and could make a nice addition to a teen’s room, with a little more sophistication.

While a little less sophisticated, this Crochet Donut Pillow Pattern is full of fun! Made with velour yarn, this fun cushion would be so adorable in a kids’ room or a funky family room. It would be so fun to delight a kid with this sweet pillow!
