Handmade Holiday Gifts

It’s go time! November always takes me by surprise. Before November, if I had started thinking about Christmas gifts or making anything, I was so super early and ahead of the game. Once November hits, I always feel behind. It’s stupid, really. But the maker mom in me wants to handmake something for everyone. Besides making everyone some coasters or ornaments, it just isn’t practical to start in November. But just because you can’t make something elaborate for everyone, doesn’t mean that you can’t make something elaborate for someone special. So, I’ve rounded up a group of patterns to make for some beautiful handmade holiday gifts! Check them out and get to work!

Or… here’s the other trick, if you’re starting in November, you can still get a handmade gift made for you! There are so many makers who make a gorgeous handmade gift for you, wrap it beautifully and ship it to you in time for Christmas. Just take note of any special order-by dates, so you can be sure to get what you want in time for your gift-giving!

Stuffed toys are always a great gift idea for children! Even adults find them hard to resist! This sweet Friendy Wendy the Lamb crochet pattern would make a lovely handmade gift!

The beauty of holiday time is that you can decorate with stuffed toys! When else can you display stuffed toys if you’re not a kid (or my mother-in-law in her spare bedrooms)? You can make this Kevin the Snowman Amigurumi Pattern and put him on your mantle or give him as a loveable Christmas toy!

These Christmas Minis set of crochet toy patterns are another opportunity to make and display some cute little amigurumi toys for the holidays! If you attached some string to these little guys, they would make great hanging ornaments or gift toppers!

My little Oak hubby crochet toy pattern is a sweet little amigurumi toy pattern to make as a lovey for a child. What an adorable earthy little doll! He looks perfectly suited for the woodsy outdoors.

Maybe the hype of Frozne is over now, but I know there are still some die-hard fans out there and kids still love Olaf. If you have a fan in your life, you could make one of these detachable Olaf Snowman crochet patterns. How much fun is it to have an interactive handmade toy to play with!?

Play food is such a fun handmade gift! This amigurumi cup of hot cocoa is a cute and quick-to-make little pattern that will delight any recipient! How much fun would it be to put out an amigurumi cup of cocoa and cookies for Santa this year?

For an older child or teen, this Crochet Pillow Lips Amigurumi Pattern would make a great throw pillow for their bed. Made with fuzzy blanket yarn, this little pillow would be so cozy to snuggle up to!

For the knitters in the group looking to make a garment, the Lodgepole Cowl knitting pattern is a lovely colour-work knitting pattern, made with just two colours. Cowls make great handmade gifts because you don’t need to have someone’s exact measurements to make a garment that is going to fit and they knit up rather quickly, so you can make lots for all your friends!

If you’ve got a little more time to craft this year, you could make up one of these Winter Star Crochet Blanket Patterns and have a fabulous afghan to enjoy or delight someone with a gorgeous handmade gift!

Or if winter stars are not your thing, check out this Midnight Diamond Blanket Crochet Pattern. I love the pattern on this; it almost looks like a Scandinavian rug! I wonder if I could make it with t-shirt yarn and make a fun rug?

So, if you’re not a maker, or you are and you just don’t have time to make one of these lovely patterns, there are still makers out there who have time to make a great gift for you in time for the holidays. Like this incredible Crocheted fairy house teapot cosy from Pleasant Things Store. Remember last year when I made my teapot cosy for the silent auction? Well, this maker makes them, too! And she is far more prolific than I am! I tell ya, for all the work that goes into a piece of art like this, her prices are a good deal!

Or maybe you would prefer to give a Luxury Sparrow Beanie made by my friend Jasmine at KichekoDesigns with hand-dyed superwash Merino wool. I love the giant faux fur poms; they’re still so trendy and fun. This gorgeous hat would be loved by any recipient! If you want to make your own, you can grab the pattern from HaileyBailey.

Do you have a new baby coming into the family soon? Jasmine would also make you a Little Ombre Blanket made with naturally soft merino. Perfect baby stroller blanket! It’s such a delight to receive a handmade gift, so you can be sure to let your recipient know that this blanket was handmade in Canada by a delightful woman in Revelstoke, BC!

Pre-order your Knit Hat with Faux Fur Pom from a fellow Edmonton maker, GingerfullyCozy. This mustard yellow is such a great colour this fall; I’m so glad it’s still on-trend: it’s one of my favourite colours!

For a chunky option, GingerfullyCozy also has this cute textured knit hat with faux fur pom. The grey is so classic and goes with everything!

So, whether you’re kicking your making into high-gear this month or organizing yourself for the gift-giving season ahead, you’ve got a bunch of great options to have a lovely handmade holiday! I’m always so pleased to push handmade on people; it’s a far superior option in so many ways. If you make it yourself, you can save some money by just buying some yarn that’s within your budget and add so much value with some of your time. It makes such a special gift for the recipient because of your input of time and thought. If you buy from an independent maker, you’re usually getting a super great deal and you’re directly supporting creative handiwork! We shouldn’t lose these skills! We need to value them and we need to value the time that makers spend making and coming up with beautiful patterns for the rest of us! So, what are you waiting for? Go get one of these patterns or put your order in for a handmade item by a talented maker! Pin this for later so you can find it next time you’re looking for it.

Gifts for Knitters

If you have a knitter on your list and don’t know what to get them, well let me steer you in the right direction! When you know someone does a craft, sometimes it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the options of things that you don’t know what to do with. Well, I am here to guide you!

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

A yarn bowl is always a great idea for a lovely gift for a knitter. Many knitters don’t own one yet (even me)! I usually wind a center-pull ball, but a yarn bowl is still a lovely knitting accessory and isn’t this wooden one beautiful?

Here’s another super adorable yarn bowl. Don’t you love this ceramic sheep yarn bowl? So cute.

Unique buttons also make a lovely gift. It’s always great to have an assortment on hand for finishing up a project without having to go shopping for buttons. And sometimes buttons can inspire a project all by themselves. These gorgeous carved wooden bird buttons are adorable and so unique! I love handmade!

These boho painted wooden buttons are another great option, if your recipient are a trendy button option. How fun would it be to give such a simple, but special and thoughtful gift from an independent artisan?

Stitch markers also make a lovely little gift, a perfect little stocking stuffer. Check out these adorable sheep stitch markers… so cute.

Alternatively, if your recipient is more of the minimalist type, these delicate raindrop shaped brass stitch markers are another stitch marker gift.

I have never knit with a knitting ring before, but they look so interesting. If your knitting loved one does a lot of colour-work, then they might like to figure out how to knit or crochet with one of these knitting rings

Almost any knitter would be delighted with some luxurious, wonderfully-coloured yarn. Check out this gorgeous autumn colourway wool yarn from Fashion Touch Supplies.

Or a full kit full of yarn enough for a complete shawl in a teal to browns. So many knitters will have spent the pre-Christmas season making gifts for others. What a delight it would be to be given supplies to make a lovely treat for themselves!

I hope you find these suggestions helpful for shopping for the knitter in your life! Pin it on Pinterest to share with your friends or find it later!

Handmade Holiday Gift Guide

I know many of us to have grandiose ideas about getting our act together and making everyone on our holiday lists beautiful handmade Christmas gifts, but then the reality of life sets in and you need to accept that you just might have to compromise a little. You can still give great handmade gifts! And you can support real people with small businesses who are trying to make it as artisans. It’s one of the main reasons I love Etsy. It’s a great place to find unique, handmade gifts made ethically (and sometimes even locally!). Check out some of my handmade holiday gift picks.

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

First of all, you know I’ve pointed you in the direction of many great handmade hat patterns you can knit or crochet. But if you don’t have time to make one, you can get an Arrow Beanie made to order from Nina Bella Co. Super cute, eh? (Also, if you’re more of the crafty type and have some time to knit, you can grab the pattern here.)

As always, while we’re shopping for others, we find some great things for ourselves. This winter sweatshirt is adorable and casual for the festive season. You can get one for your sister, or for yourself.

While I’m not really a pet person, I love pet people. And pet people love their pets. Doesn’t this Felted Wool Cat Cave Pebble look so cozy for your kitty? Super sweet and would look stylish in any living space!

Got a baby on your list? This simple and sweet crib sized heart baby blanket makes a lovely gift for a new baby. If you still have some time to knit, check out one of these patterns to make a special gift for the little one in your life.

It’s often hard to find a nice handmade gift for the man in your life. I always think that I might like to make Mr Evangelist a hand-knit sweater, but I never leave myself enough time. I would absolutely consider one like this men’s winter-themed knitted sweater. Christmas-y but not an ugly Christmas sweater. You need to get your order in quickly to give this crafter some time because I think it’s made to order, but it’s so lovely!

Handmade stockings are such a nice family gift. If you don’t have time to crochet some yourself (I love this pattern), you can get these hand-crocheted Christmas stockings made for you by Creative Thread Yarn.

While dishcloths can be a great handmade gift for colleagues and mother-in-laws, if your first try at crocheting isn’t going so well, you can pick up a couple of these handmade textured dishcloths for your MIL and pass them off as yours (we won’t tell).

Ok, this isn’t something I could make, but somebody makes them and they’re gorgeous! If you have a baker on your list (maybe me!?), I sure would I’m sure they would love one of these embossed rolling pins to make gorgeous holiday cookies! Or maybe you’re a baker and you could get yourself one of these lovelies to make some homemade cookies as gifts! Options!

Handmade toys make such special gifts! Give this crocheted amigurumi deer stuffed animal to a special child in your life. Or if you have a little bit of time to crochet your own, check out one of these other reindeer amigurumi patterns here.

I hope you’ve got a good start on your list, so you can get everyone taken care of and enjoy the festivities of the Christmas season ahead. You don’t have to do it all yourself, there are plenty of artisans who would be happy to help you get some special gifts for your loved ones. If you like these ideas, please share them on Pinterest!

Crocheted Christmas Gifts

Christmas is coming! And especially for crafters: if you’re going to make something for your loved ones’ gifts, you need to get going! I often start too late and end up either crocheting long hours and late night or having to go with a store-bought back up plan (or–and you’re welcome to use this idea– giving handmade gift cards for a handmade item… which then gives me the Christmas break to keep working!)

But you still have time to crochet before the gift giving season is upon us, so pick a pattern and get crocheting! Here are some of my crocheted Christmas gifts picks.

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

In our house, the gift giving starts with opening up a stocking. How about giving a stocking? I love this Brighton Christmas Stocking pattern by Cyprianne Nolan from Pretty Darn Adorable. It calls for a bulky yarn or two strands of worsted held together, so it would crochet up quickly and has lots of pictures to help guide you.

Is there a new baby you’re making for? Check out these adorable Mini Mukluk Booties! Designed with a beginner in mind, any crocheter will be able to make up these lovely slippers in three different sizes: 0-3 month, 3-6 months & 6-12 months. Such a fun little pattern!

Or, for an even more Christmassy pair of baby booties, you could choose these Christmas Baby Booties also at A Frayed Knot Boutique. I love the fuzzy yarn used at the top. Super sweet for a little girl to complete her Christmas outfit!

Ok, babies are only babies for so long and then they grow up and you still want to make them handmade gifts. Winter hats are a fantastic option, especially with all the amazing options out there. Check out this amazing geometric patterned Evie Crochet Beanie Pattern from rubywebbs‘ Etsy shop. (There are lots of other great patterns in that shop, which you should also check out.)

I was almost just going to leave you at that suggestion to go check out the Ruby Webbs Etsy shop for some more great patterns, but I just love The Stevie Crochet Beanie Pattern so much that I had to share it with you. It’s another great gift giving option and comes in 7 different sizes, so you’re sure to be able to make one for anyone on your list!

If you don’t know the hat size of your recipient, you can’t go wrong with a gorgeous cowl! The fringe and buttons add a great finish to this lovely June Berry Cowl from Wild Sapling.

There are many other crocheted gifts you can make besides wearable items, including this fun Vintage Camera Bag Crochet Pattern from The Artisan’s Nook. Sometimes teens can be so hard to buy for and even more difficult to make for, but I think this little camera purse pattern is perfect for a teen gift!

I also find that boys are sometimes hard to make for as well, but I think any little boy would be delighted to receive this Star Wars Yoda and R2D2 set. This is not the only Star Wars inspired amigurumi patterns that Los Sospechosos carries in their shop. There’s a pattern for just about every character in the original series, plus a couple others.

Maybe your recipient is ready to learn to crochet or would like to learn amigurumi. This little pug dog amigurumi kit is a perfect first amigurumi project and contains everything you need to make this adorable little stuffed animal! Or… buy it for yourself to make your first amigurumi and then give the little stuffy away!

If you’re making a gift for your coworkers or your boss, you should consider making them each one of these potted cactus plants from Planet June. You can get a set of eight realistic cactus plant patterns for under $20! June is an amigurumi master! She has so many great patterns: definitely worth checking out her shop!

Well that should get you started on making some lovely gifts for Christmas! Go get yourself a pattern and get started. You have no more time than you have right now! Go go go! And pin this so others can get kickstarted too!

Like I’ve said before, I love browsing Pinterest and Etsy to look at all the cool handmade stuff and all the great supplies and patterns to make my own cool handmade stuff. There are so many unique handmade items available on Etsy. It’s a favourite place of mine.

Today I’d like to share with you some awesome Etsy listings for some great gifts for moms. Mother’s Day is coming, you know! As a mom and as a person with a mom, I know what would make an awesome Mother’s Day Gift.

*Disclosure: some of the following links are affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may receive a small commission.*

For the gardening mom, personalized garden tools. Awesome!

Personalized Garden tools for the gardener in your life. These would make a lovely mother's day or father's day gift

You can get these here.

Another awesome gift for the gardener is this great Milkmade Apron (and it’s currently on sale right now!).

The Milkmaid Apron. Great all-purpose linen apron for gardening, collecting eggs from chickens. Vintage cross back linen apron with deep pockets

Oh, and you have the check out this excerpt from the description. First, a pretty normal description:

It is the attention to detail on this apron that really makes it stand above the rest. The leather tabs and grommets hold the straps securely, giving more durability than the average apron and allowing for easy adjusting to fit any size. The vintage, blue striped fabric is in limited supply and, due to popularity, will not last long. The three large pockets are cut on a slant, with a tall thin pocket, perfect for utensils, paint brushes, or gardening tools, a middle pocket for larger items and a smaller one for a cell phone or other odds n’ ends, making it an ideal kitchen apron, garden apron or craft apron.

Then here’s my favourite line:

Put it on and you will be prancing through fields of wild lavender and baking bread from scratch in no time!

Haha! Awesome!

And now, for the knitting mom:

Haha! Love it!! Knit fast, Die warm! PDF printable art perfect for the craft room!

As a knitter, I think this is awesome. As a gift, this sign is super budget-friendly because it is a printable sign. It is also great for kids who procrastinate a lot because it’s an instant download. So, buy it, download it, print it, frame it and wrap it up. You’re good to go.

Maybe your mom doesn’t have enough mugs. Or maybe she just needs a really hilarious one! This one is good for a laugh.
