Vacation Makes to Get Away With

I just received my first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine yesterday, so I am hopeful that one day soon we might be able to take vacations again! But what better way to spend my time while I wait for my second dose and wait for my fellow humans to get vaccinated than to make some vacation and summer-inspired patterns? I have collected a bunch of patterns that are great to wear on vacation or great projects to make on vacation, as we all look longingly ahead to knitting and crocheting on the beach!

The Sarafan Dress Crochet Pattern from Mon Petit Violon Designs is a lacy little summer crochet dress pattern for sizes 9 months up to 5 years. You can easily adjust the length of the dress to suit the child or their preference. That’s the lovely thing about making your own clothing: you can customize it according to your preference. I love it when designers include instructions for customization!

This girly little crocheted Sea Breeze Dress pattern also from Mon Petit Violin Designs is a lovely textured lace crochet pattern available for sizes from 0 months up to 10 years! (Wow! Talk about a grading project!). You can easily make matching dresses for siblings with just this one pattern. I love the different stitches incorporated into this cute sundress, making it interesting to make and such a lovely keepsake to treasure and pass down.

For a crocheted dress pattern for yourself, check out this sweet Synthesis Crocheted Dress Pattern from Mermaid Cat Designs. The lacy peekaboo waistband adds a delicate and flirtatious little touch and the scoop back makes this a perfect summery dress to keep cool. Walk on the beach or a night out on a patio, this sweet little sundress is so adorable. It comes with instructions for just small, medium, and large, though, so if you are outside those size ranges, this might not be the pattern for you. But if you’re good with gauge and numbers, you might be able to figure out how to make it in your size.

I just loved the ethereal quality of the photos of the Discovery Crocheted Maxi Off-the-Shoulder Dress, which is also designed by Mermaid Cat Designs. Plenty of pictures are included every step of the way. This dress is also limited in its sizes, again offering only S, M, L. This would look so pretty as a beachy dress or even a wedding dress!

A knit beach cover-up is just the thing you need this summer or for your next beach vacation! This See Through Beach Cover Up Knitting Pattern from Julie Malic Patterns is suitable for the beginner knitter, but only in sizes XS, S & M. That’s just weird. Humans come in more sizes, designers! This is a cute beach cover-up, but you’ll have to make significant adjustments if you’re larger than a Medium.

This Beach Beauty Cover Up Crochet Pattern from Knot Yourself Out makes another cute beach cover-up, it is just one size, but it does contain instructions for adjusting the size to suit, as it is just made up of two rectangles stitched together, leaving room for the neck, arms and side slits.

The Juliette Top Crochet Pattern from Ruby Webbs is a lovely staple summer top pattern. I love the way the vertical lines of the rows (worked sideways!) make a subtle texture. This pattern is very easy and suitable for the beginner crocheter. It is written to includes sizes extra small to extra large, from a 28″ – 46″ bust.

If you are looking for a quick and easy summer crop top pattern, check out this cute Crocheted Crop Top Pattern from Knitcro Addict. This pattern is a little more size-inclusive, including sizes from XS-XXL. I love the little peekaboo butterfly in the middle of the top. This pattern would be easy to adjust to your length preference. It includes 7 pages of written instructions and photo tutorial, as well as a link to a helpful video to guide you along the way.

The knitters can make the Riveria Summer Sweater Knitting Pattern from Jolly Knits, which is a gorgeous and versatile light summer sweater in sizes S, M & L. I love the eyelet yoke and the lacy body for a lovely summer top that can easily go from the beach to the office.

This adorable summer hat crochet pattern is so on-trend! The Devon Hat Crochet Pattern comes written with 9 different sizes from baby to adult size large (15.5″-24.5″ head circumference). It is crocheted with raffia yarn, which I think looks so casual and summery and it really adds a lovely structure to the hat. This easy pattern requires only basic techniques, so it’s the perfect pattern for beginner crocheter to making something stunning and trendy!

For a little different style, this lovely Bow Hat Crochet Pattern from Uy Uy Crochet makes a sweet, wide-brimmed hat with instructions for two different sizes, fitting head circumferences of 20-23 innches. What a fun and pretty hat for summer!

A beach bag is always a good idea and this Beach Front Bag Knitting Pattern from Barley and Flax is a quick-to-knit pattern that will look so great at the beach or the farmers market. This casual bag will hold up to anything you can fit in it and when blocked, has this lovely airy look. It’s definitely got a boho vibe that just screams summer.

I hope you found something to make that helps you dream of summer and vacation and that knitting or crocheting one of these lovely patterns will hurry along the time until we can all get on planes and go to lovely warm vacation spots again! Until then, grab yourself a pattern and get making! Or pin it for later so you don’t forget!

10 Fabulous Handmade Bag Patterns

To schlep or not to schlep, that is the question. What is schlepping? I’m not sure I’ve ever read a formal definition, but when used in context I would define it as “transporting (usually large amounts of) things from one place to another, especially by foot, especially multiple times, especially on vacation.” This is a word that entered my vocabulary via my older sister who, while claiming to despise schlepping of all kinds, tends to be the kind of person who has thought to bring everything you need when you didn’t even know you needed it. I admire her commitment to order and covet her organizational prowess, but just can’t seem to stay on top of the ever-present clutter and chaos invading my own home. But I can crochet little chair socks in a pinch, so it’s kind of a trade-off, ok?

Anyway, this post is dedicated to my sister who hates to schlep. Schlepping is reduced by having great bags to tote your stuff around in (also, by getting a beach-front room at the resort). So check out some of these great handmade handbag patterns you can make to reduce your schlepping, or at least do it in style.

I’ve been enamored with this Mochila Handbag Crochet Pattern for the last couple of weeks. I love the fun cherry/floral vibe paired with the geometric triangles. What a fun handbag, perfect for a boho vibe, getting out and about this summer, walking through town or in the park. I’m totally fascinated to try this tapestry crochet technique because the fabric looks so solid and secure. Once I get myself a set of tunisian crochet hooks (I have my eye on these ones from KnitPicks), I’m going to give this a try. Get this amazing pattern HERE.

If you can finally bring your bags to your market again, then you knitters could make up one of these sweet and lightweight Pike Place Market Bag Knitting Patterns to schlep your vegetables home. This little bag will fit easily in your purse and then expand to fit all your fabulous market finds and haul them home. Make it from washable cotton yarn and you can wash and reuse this lovely bag over and over. Find this sweet pattern HERE.

Don’t hoard all that handmade goodness for yourself, though. You can make this adorable Panda Purse Crochet Pattern for one of your littles (or yourself, I don’t judge). I don’t know what it is with my kids, but it seems to take them a while to get the hang of bags to haul their stuff in. The littlest will stumble his way from the house to the truck, tripping over his blanket, grabbing his favourite stuffy, an Etch-a-Sketch, his computer mouse, a different bag (that for some unknown reason does not contain the other stuff) and a bottle of water. Perhaps if he had an adorable stuffy-like bag, he would put it all in there (doubtful… but one can try!) Maybe it will work for your kid. Get this adorable pattern HERE.

By now we should all know how much I love lemons. I love the flavour of tart lemonade and the bright vibrant colour of lemons. It might be a bit of overkill (a lot of yellow and lemons have leaked into my wardrobe), but perhaps I’ll make one of these delightful little Lemon Bag Crochet Patterns to go along with some of my adorable yellow attire. Or maybe I’ll just hang it in my bathroom to contain a few odds and ends. If you want to make one yourself, you can get this cute pattern HERE.

I love the sophistication of this Bryce Bag by Lakeside Loops Crochet Pattern. I love the subtle colour blocking and the crocheted rope handles. This pattern comes in 2 sizes, so you can make a matching one for your little one. The gorgeous pattern has such a lovely simplicity to it with the single crochet stitch pattern crocheted in the round. And the colour options are endless! Stripes and colour blocking. So easily customizable! This should absolutely be your next project! Buy the pattern HERE.

Check out Stephanie’s new Camellia Tote Bag Crochet Pattern! Don’t you just love the different simple stitch patterns joined together in this adorable new tote bag? I’m absolutely in love with this Boho Tote Bag Crochet Pattern! I love the tassel and the sling feel of this bucket purse. Perfect for the beach or just a super relaxed beach accessory. Pair this gorgeous tote with a pair of cut-off jeans, your favourite breezy tank and a large straw sunhat for a fun summer outfit. This quick and easy pattern works up quickly so you can make it in time for the weekend. Find the pattern at THIS LINK.

For a more sturdy and simple bag, check out this Simple Beauty Market Bag Crochet Pattern. You can schlep all your odds and ends in this gorgeous bag made with a cross stitch single crochet for a night tight fabric. Haul your crochet hooks and projects in this adorable tote or it’s sturdy enough to carry a bottle of wine! Don’t forget to add a beautiful custom leatherette tag to add that touch of professional flair to your handmade items. Find the pattern by clicking HERE.

Don’t worry, knitters: I haven’t forgotten about you (but seriously, learn to crochet because it is all kinds of awesome). If knitting is your thing–or even if it’s not totally your thing–then even a beginner knitter can handle this gorgeous and simple Drawstring Backpack Knitting Pattern. Patterns with simple stitch patterns like this one are so approachable for new knitters. I love it when you can surprise a beginner with a project idea that isn’t just a hat or scar (nothing wrong with hats, but hey, you’ve only got one head!) This backpack is just fabulous and you’ll get to say over and over again, “Thanks, I made it.” And can we just say how much of a mood this photo is. Like, I want to go to there. Get the pattern going to THIS LINK.

And we shan’t leave you knitters with only a backpack, you can also join the relaxed crew with this super chill Everyday Knit Bag Pattern. Haul your towel and dry clothes to the beach and swing this cute tote over your shoulder for an easy vibe that just screams summer. Make it in all kinds of stripes or solids to fit any outfit or look you’re going for. Find this pattern HERE.

I hope you’ve found a lovely bag pattern here to haul all your stuff so you can reduce the dreaded schlepping, especially summer schlepping, which is sure to be sweaty and cutting into your valuable relaxing time. No need to schlep if you can haul it all in one trip! Grab one of these great patterns today or pin it for later.

Handmade Handbags

While I’ve never really thought of myself as a handbag person, as it turns out, I’m quite drawn to them. I tend to under-purchase in general, so I tend not to buy myself too many. I have made myself a couple of bags before, but they’ve never turned into my regular handbag. I use one to hold WIPs and another I made to carry some supplies to church. It might just be time to make another because I’ve found some great looking patterns! Check out these beautiful handmade handbag patterns!

This Audrey Hobo Bag by Hooked on Patterns caught my eye most recently. I love the slouchy hobo bag style with the sturdy textured stitch at the top. This looks like it would make a lovely bag to transport projects!

I am also very drawn to this Window Frost Handbag Crochet Pattern by Outstanding Crochet. I love the lacy flower motif. It looks so delicate and could easily be dressed up or down.

Some people don’t have time for all the crafty stuff. For them, there’s this made to order Crochet Lomo Camera Purse from the shop Meemanan. If you’re really keen on making one yourself, you can find a pattern for a similar camera purse here.

The Kiara Bag crochet pattern from the shop Ruby Webbs is a lovely textured handbag that comes in 2 different sizes, one of which looks large enough to hold a laptop! I love how sturdy it looks!

Need some more skills under your belt before you can tackle this awesome bag? Grab a subscription to Blueprint for some super helpful online crochet classes!

I guess all of these patterns have been crochet up until now. If you haven’t quite ventured into hooking, the Horseshoe Cable Handbag pdf knitting pattern from the Etsy shop LOTCP is a lovely looking cable-knit pattern for a handbag. If you’re looking for some wooden bag handles, check out some of these.

Another lovely knitting pattern for a handbag is this Cherry Blossom Felted Bag Knitting Pattern from the shop Splendid Sparrow. If you’ve never felted before, a handbag is a perfect project to experiment with that! Size isn’t quite as important as a garment, so if it ends up a little smaller than anticipated, it isn’t the end of the world. And isn’t that lovely cherry blossom embroidered embellishment lovely?

UPDATE: Unfortunately this pattern is no longer available. Check out these other Felted Knit Bag Patterns for some beautiful options.

I hope you’ve found some inspiration for some handmade handbag patterns. Please pin it for later or to share with your friends!
