Gifts You Can Make with Crochet

I fully intended to be much more obnoxious about getting on you all to get your handmade gifts made earlier this year, but I fear I have failed you. But it is only November! It’s the beginning of November! If you are determined and you sets your sights realistically, you can make handmade gifts for everyone you truly love. I shared this funny quote in my Instagram stories the other day, so I think you all should see it.

So, yes, if you want to make sweaters for your loved ones, you’d better only have two loved ones (maybe just one depending on the sweater), but if you are happy giving your colleagues something a little more manageable, you do still have time to make some handmade gifts for your loved ones! It’s Time to Start Making Christmas Gifts

Ok, yes, it seems weird to start thinking about Christmas as we’re just getting started with real Spring and Summer, but if we don’t start thinking about it now, we end up in a mad, hand-cramping, making frenzy in December or giving homemade gift cards for something we need to finish up in January-or worse-buying something! But if we start now, get some ideas, make some plans, and start working consistently, we can use the love we have for our friends and family to guide our making plans over the next 6 months and still enjoy holiday festivities come December. And won’t it be so exciting to present our loved ones with beautiful, thoughtful handmade gifts that we’ve been waiting with anticipation to give them?! So, once a month over the next 6 months, I will gather up a group of ideas and patterns to get us excited and motivated to start making some great gifts for our friends and family!

You thought I was going to start with complex patterns, didn’t you? But The New London Wool Roving Pillow Cover Knitting Pattern from The Autumn Acorn is a quick and easy pattern made with wool roving, so it works up super quickly and makes a thick, warm, and luxurious accessory. I’ve included it here for a couple of reasons: you might need some time to locate the materials you need, but the project will be quick and you’ll get the payoff of being able to check an item off of your make list, which will help keep you going!

Again, we don’t have to make elaborate gifts for everyone. The Hillcrest Cowl Knitting Pattern from Peony Knits is a relatively quick and easy knitting pattern. This would be a great project if you’re a new knitter and you want to make some stylish gifts for your friends.

This sweater is so versatile; it can be worn year round and it’s so on-trend, your fashion-loving friend will adore this sweater. It is size-inclusive, with sizes from XS to 5XL

If you’re less confident about your recipient’s size, you can make this Boho Poncho with Fringe Crochet Pattern from A Frayed Knot Boutique. This fun poncho can be a great way to use up some half skeins of yarn and you can make them in just about any combo for a different look each time.

Again, just because we’re starting early doesn’t mean we need to make everyone a sweater. I might just make one of these for myself! The pattern includes 7 sizes from Small to 4XL. You can download and print this pdf pattern on standard 8.5 x 11″ paper and get sewing this hooded sweatshirt today!

If you don’t have quite enough time to knit, crochet or sew a sweater for that special dad in your life, you might have enough time to make him a pair of slippers. This easy crochet pattern from Crochet Milie for Comfy Slippers for Men and Women looks like it would work up quickly for a pair of simple and modern home shoes, perfect for dad!

The Canadians are going to love this pattern! The Beer Thirty Mitten Cozy Crochet Pattern from Sweet Potato 3 Patterns is perfect for early summer camping weekends and sitting by the fire with a drink. The cup cozy has a bottom so you can’t easily drop this drink and it both protects your hand from the temperature of your drink as well as the elements. Maybe the men don’t need this as badly as I do, as my hands are often cold, but it’s such a fun idea and it will make a great conversation piece.

The Beer Mug Beer Cozy Crochet Pattern from You Should Craft is a quick and festive pattern full of fun for dad. Help keep his beer cold and hands warm with this fun beer mug cozy! These work up quickly with worsted yarn, so if you’re looking for something quick, this is your pattern!

Did you know that wool is an insulating fibre? It’s great for keeping things warm and cool! So if you had some wool around, it would make a great yarn for these beer cozy patterns! If you don’t know where to start, KnitPicks has a great selection of wool yarns at affordable prices; the Wool of the Andes yarns would work great for these.

Quick Handmade Gifts

Did you leave making your handmade gifts until December? I may or may not have done this, intending every year to start earlier, but then getting easily distracted and finding the fall having slipped by without my having made a bunch of handmade gifts. My family may be getting used to receiving handmade “gift cards” of promises of handmade goods for the future. I usually have much more time between Christmas and New Years to knit and crochet, so I sit and knit/crochet and drink coffee with Baileys. If you have a knitter on your list and don’t know what to get them, well let me steer you in the right direction! When you know someone does a craft, sometimes it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the options of things that you don’t know what to do with. Well, I am here to guide you!

A yarn bowl is always a great idea for a lovely gift for a knitter. Many knitters don’t own one yet (even me)! I usually wind a center-pull ball, but a yarn bowl is still a lovely knitting accessory and isn’t this wooden one beautiful?

Unique buttons also make a lovely gift. It’s always great to have an assortment on hand for finishing up a project without having to go shopping for buttons. Are you crafting for a baby this Christmas? Baby items are great beginner projects because they’re so small. (And adorable!) I know many of us to have grandiose ideas about getting our act together and making everyone on our holiday lists beautiful handmade Christmas gifts, but then the reality of life sets in and you need to accept that you just might have to compromise a little. You can still give great handmade gifts! And you can support real people with small businesses who are trying to make it as artisans. It’s one of the main reasons I love Etsy. It’s a great place to find unique, handmade gifts made ethically (and sometimes even locally!). Check out some of my handmade holiday gift picks.

First of all, you know I’ve pointed you in the direction of many great handmade hat patterns you can knit or crochet. It’s often hard to find a nice handmade gift for the man in your life. I always think that I might like to make Mr Evangelist a hand-knit sweater, but I never leave myself enough time. I would absolutely consider one like this men’s winter-themed knitted sweater. Christmas-y but not an ugly Christmas sweater. You need to get your order in quickly to give this crafter some time because I think it’s made to order, but it’s so lovely!
