Affordable and Unique Living Room Decor Ideas

We renovated our living room (what we call the family room) last summer, along with our kitchen. I love them both and the changes we made in our living room/dining room area make the space so much more functional than it was before! I don’t consider myself to be the best interior designer, but I’m happy with the bones of what we have put together. I am slowly building out the rest of the “dressing” of this room. And a few weeks ago, I finally got a few things up on the walls. There’s still more to do and I’m always considering new ideas. But let me share what we did and give you some ideas for your rooms!

This space above this side of the couch now sports this series of Winter Gallery Wall prints from Seven Paper Prints in Ikea Ribba frames. They do have a very lovely wintery vibe to them. I have plans to switch them out twice a year for another seasonal set of prints.

I bought this set of floral digital prints, plus a couple more from BohoRina to have printed and put in the same frames for spring.

I also considered this Set of 6 Watercolor Greenery Prints from Art Space Lia. The fun thing about digital prints is that you can download them immediately, send them off to your favourite printer, pop them in some frames and voila, super affordable, near-instant art!

There are some super fun custom decor pieces you can get as well for a very affordable price, especially if you have access to a good printer, like this Custom Family Portrait from Love Becca Designs.

On our fireplace accent wall, I actually painted a very subtle design with two different sheens of the same colour paint. You can only tell it’s there if you are looking from the right angle where the light hits it just so. It’s for the best since it’s a pretty busy wall with a fireplace, a mantel, and the TV, but if there wasn’t so much going on with it, I absolutely would have considered a fun stencil like this Herringbone Wall Stencil from Stencilit.

My kids are a little old for this, but I love this fun “Look What I Made” Sign from Grow and Company. I’d probably hang it in the dining room, above our sideboard. Kids love having their art on display and it’s always nice to have a place to display it that is easy to swap new works of art out.

However, since my kids aren’t really demanding that I display their artwork as much as they used to, I think these beautiful Rustic Floating Wood Shelves from iirntree are probably a little more appropriate for the space above the sideboard. We’ve become very accustomed to storing our wine glasses in the kitchen, but some floating shelves like this in the dining room would make some more space in the kitchen cabinets for some other things.

Get those cute spice jars!

This fun Set of 3 Wooden Arrows from Cherry Tree Gallery are another option to consider and would look good in my living room. Is the arrows thing getting a little outdated? I never really jumped on this trend, but it seems like it might be waning a little.

This is not our fireplace wall, but we did go with a mantel very similar to this Wood Beam Mantel from Anjowga Woodworks. We found a local guy on who made ours for us and it was great. It has French Cleat mounting hardware just like this one, which made it super easy to hang and it’s super sturdy.

We put in a fireplace insert under it, which I love. This is the one we got:

Would it really be a post by me if it didn’t include a pattern or two? One of the great things about knitting and crochet is that you can make your own decor: beautiful, luxury pieces custom made by you to add your own special touch. Throw pillows are a great place to do this, like this Symphony Crochet Cushion Pattern from Knitted Decor. The diamond/chevron pattern adds an interesting texture and is a classic geometric-inspired piece.

Or maybe you would prefer this Boho Crochet Pillow Pattern from Seacliffe Cottage. The fun bobble pattern make for an interesting project and you will love to display this unique pillow on your couch!

Are you updating your living room decor this season? What kinds of things are inspiring you? What ideas do you have for your space to really come together? It doesn’t necessarily take a lot of money to design a space that you love. With some creative thinking, a little bit of time and attention to detail, you can make a space that is cozy and inviting for your family to enjoy. Pin it for later!

Making for the Kitchen – Knit, Crochet & Sewing Patterns

We are about to head into a pretty major kitchen renovation in a few days, so I have kitchen on the brain. And while I probably won’t have a lot of extra time for making the finishing touches in the kitchen just yet, thinking about them helps me get motivated to do the dirty work of cleaning up and preparing for the weeks of chaos ahead of us. In the mean time, you all can enjoy some great modern knit and crochet patterns for the kitchen. One of the reasons I love knit and crochet so much is that you can make custom solutions for little problems in your life or just add something extra special, that matches perfectly and functions well. Check out these great patterns.

A little kitchen rug is a nice touch by the sink to add some cushion beneath your feet and absorb the little splatters from the faucet. The Modbob Rug Crochet Pattern from The Cozy Knot Crochet is a cute and modern, bobble-embellished crochet pattern that would work at a kitchen sink, as a bathmat, or as an entry rug.

If you need to get some yarn for this project, crochet.com has a great variety of cotton yarns, like Dishie… they even have the Dishie Cone, which is 400 grams of 100% cotton worsted yarn.

If you prefer the half-circle variety of rug, you could make this Half Moon Rug Crochet Pattern from Malkishu Art. This pattern crochets up quickly using t-shirt yarn and double-crochet, so you could probably whip up a new rug for your kitchen in a couple of hours!

For a quicker rug, you can make these adorable little mug rugs. The Betty Mug Rug Crochet Pattern from Wool And Wax Dreams is a quick and easy little crochet pattern that will replace your coasters with a cute little rug to protect your coffee table from your hot mugs.

The Easy Kitchen Towel Topper Crochet Pattern from Stitching Together is a quick and easy kitchen towel topper that is innovatively attached to the top corner and then uses the towel itself to wrap around the handle of your stove. It makes a quick little housewarming gift when you don’t have a lot of advanced notice and it’s a great little project to use up some scrap cotton yarn. This pattern is also available for free here. (Also, if you need some yarn, Dishie would work well for this project, too!)

Here’s another quick and useful project for you: the Sunburst Dish Scrubby Crochet Pattern from Bash Yarn Works is a super quick and functional dish scrubby made with nylon yarn or 3″ spooled tulle. So many people I know love having a handy little dish scrubby like this one in their kitchen!

DeBrosse NYC once again has a modern and gorgeous coaster pattern for your contemporary kitchen. The Croix Crochet Coaster Pattern. This stylish and modern take on the coaster provides the perfect pop of chic to your coffee table. The clean lines of the waistcoat stitch paired with the curvature of the wooden ring create a simple but stunning combination. If you haven’t checked out DeBrosse NYC patterns before, it is definitely worth your time-all of her patterns are sleek and clean and NOT your granny’s crochet patterns!

Another handy crocheted item for the kitchen is this Easy Crocheted Hanging Basket from Iknit For Cozy Home. Made with jute (or cotton: Lionbrand 24/7 Cotton is also a great choice and comes in 37 different colours! The colour Hay Bale is almost exactly a jute colour!) These hanging baskets would be great to hold plants, utensils, or other items you want to keep handy, but off your countertop!

Update: Sadly, this pattern is no longer available, but check out these other great crocheted hanging basket patterns for some good substitutions!

I’m sure you were wondering how long it was going to take me to get around to the most obvious handmade kitchen accessory: the dishtowel. The Turtle Trunk has this great Farmhouse Dish Set Crochet Pattern, which includes easy patterns and instructions for three different towels: a dishcloth/washcloth pattern (8.5″ x 8.5″), a dish towel (13″ x 21″), and a hanging towel (8.5″ x 19″). Dishie yarn is a great choice for this set, too!

Don’t worry, knitters, I haven’t forgotten about you! The Ocean View Dishcloth Knitting Pattern from Goose Creek Knits is a nautical-themed dishcloth pattern and features alternating rows of garter stitch and ribbing, which keeps it laying nice and flat. Knit from corner to corner, it uses a simple combination of knit, purl, increase, and decrease stitches. This is a great beginner knitting pattern!

Are you concerned about the amount of water it takes to process cotton? Re-Up Yarn from Lion Brand is a recycled 100% cotton yarn that is great for these dishcloth patterns and other kitchen items. By using one 70 gram ball of Re-Up Yarn, you are saving 1,400 liters of water!

There are so many great options out there for knit dishcloth patterns! The Woven Waves Dish Towel knitting pattern from Nich Knits uses slip-stitch knitting to create a woven fabric using basic stitches. This pattern is beautiful, reversible, and thick enough for a great dish towel.

While not strictly a pattern for the kitchen, this Egg-cellent Apron Crochet Pattern from Heart Hook Home is just what you need if you have backyard chickens and need to collect eggs. Not only does it include individual egg pockets to accommodate 19 eggs, but there’s also a larger pocket for your cell phone, to-do list, pen, or whatever else you might need to carry. Heart Hook Home also offers this pattern for free (with ads) on her blog.

If sewing is more your jam, did you know you can buy digital sewing patterns online? The Jess Apron Sewing Pattern from Bouquet Clothing is an easy sewing pattern for beginners to make their own custom apron. This classic pattern includes options to sew a full or half vintage-inspired apron and the options for your own embellishments are details are endless!

Update: This apron pattern is unfortunately no longer available. Check out these other apron sewing patterns for some good options.

If you prefer the casual and full coverage style of a Japanese pinafore apron, the Crossback Apron Sewing Pattern from TOTO shop UA is a lovely classic and simple apron pattern with two front large pockets. I love this style of apron because it has no ties to get tangled and wrinkled in the wash.

If you wanted to embellish your apron (or something else) with embroidery, you should check out Florals and Floss Stick and Stitch Embroidery Designs. Add your very own customization to your apron or tea towels for your own unique kitchen accessories! Perhaps when we’re all finished with our kitchen project, I’ll spend the upcoming fall and winter evenings peacefully stitching up some custom tea towels to adorn my new fun kitchen. (And maybe my family won’t use THOSE ones to mop up the dirtiest messes in the kitchen as they have with all my other new towels so that every bloody one is stained… uh oh, now I’m starting to rant; time to wrap up!)

I hope you’ve been inspired to make something useful and beautiful for your kitchen! Grab one of these great patterns today and get making! Or pin it for later!

Crochet Cushions & Throws

Cushions and throws are a great way to add a new twist to your decor. It’s easy to re-purpose an old pillow by putting a new cover on it. They’re also perfect to make this time of year as it grows warmer outside and you don’t want a heavy project sitting on your lap. Crocheted cushions are great projects to work on while you travel, too! I know not many of us are travelling these days, so taking a smaller project to make on the deck is also a good idea.

Even though we’re still working on our bathroom renovation (and I don’t plan on putting any throw cushions in there), all this renovating (as it creeps into more and more rooms in the house) has me thinking about refreshing the decor all over our house. New covers for cushions are a great way to use up a few skeins of yarn and add a fresh new look to (almost) any room! So check out these great cushions and throws crochet patterns that I’ve curated for you!

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

This round Rosewheel Cushion Crochet Pattern has a neat embossed look to it with the front post stitches that form the beautiful pinwheel flower design on the front. I love crocheting in the round and this pillow pattern looks like it would work up quickly, keeping my interest with the embossed design on the front.

Here’s another lovely textured cushion cover, the Boho Tassel Throw Pillow Crochet Pattern has a lovely fringe for a casual, vintage vibe. The bobbles and tassels make this cushion cover interesting to crochet, but also a lovely textural experience to just cuddle up to and play with while watching TV.

I’m also completely enjoying the vintage vibe of this Summer of 77 Rainbow Pillow Crochet Pattern. The fun bobbles along the rows of the rainbow. And it’s so easy to be inspired to make this cushion in whatever colours suit your taste! This would look great in a teen’s room as well, with a funky and fun vibe, but not too baby-ish.

While it’s not a cushion, this Love for Frida Blankie Crochet Pattern would make a great throw blanket to add a splash of colour to any room with a fun vintage vibe. If you love Frida Kahlo and her bright and colourful style, you’ll definitely be inspired to make this colourful blanket! It’s a flexible pattern that can be modified easily to use up your existing stash! There’s nothing better than a project that you don’t have to buy more yarn for!

Haha, I bet you weren’t thinking this when you were thinking cushions. But this Cactus Pincushion Crochet Pattern is such a fun little project idea. Super quick to make up and it would make an excellent gift for someone who loves to sew. I definitely think I need one of these in my craft room!

I know I’m not exactly sticking to the theme here today, but I think this Dahlias and Leaves Tapestry Crochet Bag Pattern is so lovely and I think you could easily modify it to close it up and make it a throw pillow. But how cute is this pattern? Love it!

Father’s Day is coming up and you probably don’t have quite enough time to make this Crocheted Cheeseburger Ottoman Pattern unless you start crocheting like a mad-woman, but isn’t it so fun? This would be so fun in a family room, a game room, or a teen’s room. Such a fun idea!

A throw can be a cushion, a blanket or a rug! Check out this Black and White Scandinavian Rug Crochet Pattern. Isn’t it fun? I’m definitely feeling this vibe for our family room, whenever we get to that project (but it’s coming up more and more in conversation these days, so *fingers crossed*!). I’ve been wanting to crochet a rug for a while and this one seems like just the right vibe. Simple, but with enough changes in the pattern to keep me interested.

So back to pillows! This Cowhide Pillow Cover Crochet Pattern is so funky and no cows have to be harmed in its making! I love the funky cowhide inspiration, here! Perfect for a farmhouse vibe or a great gift for a farm family!

I also love this Tropical Leaf Pillow Cover Crochet Pattern. All these different designs on pillows are so fun to cycle into your decor. All you need to do is put a button or zipper closure on this lovely pillow cover and you can easily store away the cover and cycle it in at the start of a new season.

I’m also loving this Super Star Pillow Cover Crochet Pattern. It totally reminds me of the Dr Seuss “The Sneeches” story. But, you know, if you made it in blue and white, you’d have a fun American flag-inspired pillow to display for Independence Day celebrations (you know, if you’re into that… I’m Canadian, so it’s not really my thing, but the stars are pretty cool). This throw pillow would also go well in a beachy themed room and could make a nice addition to a teen’s room, with a little more sophistication.

While a little less sophisticated, this Crochet Donut Pillow Pattern is full of fun! Made with velour yarn, this fun cushion would be so adorable in a kids’ room or a funky family room. It would be so fun to delight a kid with this sweet pillow!

Or if donuts aren’t your thing, check out this Crochet Dog Pillow Pattern. Again, made with the velour/blanket yarn, this cute puppy pillow would be a great pattern to make for a dog-loving kid!

Cute Crocheted Cushions

Winter time is a great time to decorate! It’s a great time to do some online shopping (since who feels like leaving the house?) and it’s a great time to order your supplies and make some handmade decor items. I’m somewhat of a throw pillow convert, in that I used to be much more boring and practical and didn’t see why a person would want so many pillows around when they just seem to get in the way of sitting and sleeping and whatnot. But there are so many cute options, so I’ve come around! And now I’ve found so many fun patterns to make your own (and I’ve got a pattern idea in the works for a special custom pillow for my craft room… wait and see!!!). Check out the great patterns that I’ve found to make your own crafty pillows!

Starting off today’s pattern round-up is this adorable floral-embellished crocheted cushion pattern from Annie Design. I love the lacy texture on this pillow cover and the sweet little floral appliques really add a delicate touch.

Decor embellished with words is still totally on trend, so if you’re into that kind of thing, this crochet pattern for this rustic “blessed” throw cushion is a sweet farmhouse style pattern by Two Little Birds Patterns.

This adorable Love to Cuddle Pillow crochet pattern from The Turtle Trunk utilizes the popular faux fur (get some here) to make this completely cuddle-able cushion, perfect for the upcoming Valentine’s day holiday!

Monogrammed pillows would make for a lovely wedding gift, don’t ya think? Or super fun for a kid’s bedroom, as well. Check out these Brixton Monogram Pillow Crochet Patterns also from Two Little Birds Patterns.

Of course, for some reason, the poop emoji pillow is a thing. Kids are so weird. But if yours seems to have a fascination with poop emojis, perhaps you would like to make them this bizarre pillow pattern from Soul Moon Rising?

Personally, I’d much rather have one of these Shark Pillows hanging around in my kids’ rooms. Super fun and whimsical crochet pattern from Spina Yarn Studio.

Beautiful Wreaths for Every Month of the Year

I have a thing for wreaths. I have made a few. I want to one day have wreaths for every season, maybe even different ones for every month! (But where would I keep them?!) Anyway, I have these really lovely french doors in the front of our house and I have 2 hanging spots for wreaths up there, and sadly, I only put wreaths up a Christmas-time. But I’ve found some great inspiration for when I get it together to get wreaths up there year round.

*Disclosure: some of the following links are affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

January

I love this gorgeous, simple spring wreath with lovely cream-coloured berries! Perfect for winter after Christmas is over.

February

As much as I love pink and hearts, I’m not all that interested in super sappy-wreaths hanging on my front door, so this twine-wrapped wreath with pink felt flowers is my kind of Valentine’s Day wreath. Perfect for February!

March

I love this green “Lucky” wreath, which is perfect for St Patrick’s Day, but also fine to leave up for the whole month of March, since it’s not so obviously decked out with St Patrick’s Day paraphernalia.

April

Look at these matching Easter wreaths for my double french doors! Perfect! This would really add some spring life to my front door!

May

This wreath full of tulips would be perfect for Mother’s Day and the rest of May! So springy and full of colour!

June

This is a little bit of an unconventional wreath because it’s more like a pot of flowers, but it’s so fun, bright and cheery, full of gerbera daisies and greenery!

July

Now, I live in Canada, so we celebrate Canada Day on July 1, and this one is not actually a finished wreath, but a pattern for only $2.50. Get the pattern here.

And because so many of my readers are in the US, I’ve picked 2 wreaths for July, so that my American friends can view the beautiful wreaths for Independence Day (I must say, SOOOO many more options of July 4 wreaths than Canada Day wreaths, so I might be a little jealous). I love this Americana Wreath, so classic.

August

My August wreath pick is this lovely faux boxwood wreath with a monogram. Get your customized monogram and choose your colour. This wreath works for year-round use and is super classic.

September

I love this sunflower wreath! Gorgeous! I wish I had time to make one just like it! Check out all the wreaths for every month of the year that craft evangelist has found!

I love yellow and I love sunflowers! This Sunflower Wreath is my September pick for a lovely sunflower wreath to remind you that summer isn’t quite over yet!

October

I’ve decided to go with a Halloween-themed wreath for October, even though Canadian Thanksgiving is in October. I love this adorable spider web wreath, an understated, classic Halloween-themed wreath.

November

So, for the Canadians, we’ll kindly wait until November for the Thanksgiving pick. I love this Thankful wreath, a beautiful wreath to celebrate fall and Thanksgiving and the beauty and abundance of the season.

December

I’m not sure if this beautiful paper red rose & pinecone wreath will be suitable for outside or not, but IT IS SO GORGEOUS. Such a lovely classic wreath for Christmas-time! It’s too bad I already have Christmas wreaths, because I would totally get a couple of these. They’d look so good on my white french doors!

I hope all the wreaths I’ve found will give you some inspiration for making a wreath of your own, or just picking one up from one of these fantastic Etsy sellers! So many gorgeous wreaths! One day I’ll have one for every month of the year!

Farmhouse Style

We bought an old house almost 8 years ago, right before we had our third child, so it’s been pretty overwhelming. It needed some work. We did some work. It needed more work. We did some more work. It needed more work. We did some more work. We’re kind of tired of doing work, but it still needs more.

*Disclosure: some of the following links are affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

We’ve taken a little break over the past little while, but now I’m planning and dreaming again. We’re not really sure this house is going to work for us over the next 10 years, but we need to get some stuff finished up before we try to sell it. One of the important projects is getting our family room renovated properly. There are some ceiling issues from a leaky roof and window that we got fixed up and the flooring needs to be replaced as well. There’s a wall we might take out, but we’re still on the fence about it.

I think our family room would look great decorated in a farmhouse style. I already have some great plans for a DIY project for our table. It’s a double-pedestal oak table, with 2 large leaves. It can seat 10 people when fully expanded. I’m hoping to do this to it:

I’m not a big fan of really obvious fake-weathered things, but I like the rustic vibe of some farmhouse style. Check out these awesome Etsy finds for some pretty awesome farmhouse decor. I’m totally going to try to DIY some of these, or maybe even splurge on a few of them!

I love this rustic chalkboard calendar. I’m a big fan of the chalkboard look, as you may know.

There’s also this beautiful giant clock! I think I might be able to make one of these myself with this tutorial by Gather & Flourish.

I made a similar doily rug to this one for my bathroom, but I improvised a lot with on the pattern, so this way you actually have a pattern if you want to make one yourself. Here’s mine:

Beautiful doily rug made from recycled t-shirt yarn created by craft evangelist

I made this bathmat out of recycled t-shirts!

The same person who designed the doily rug pattern also created a pattern for these lovely crocheted baskets, which I think are absolutely adorable and fit in so well with farmhouse style decor or any decor, really! So sweet!
