Unwinding with Cable Knit & Crochet Patterns

There’s just something so special about cables in knitting and crochet: the twists and texture of braids and intricate designs. Cables can appear intimidating to the new crafter, but they’re really pretty simple. They require some careful attention, but they’re nothing mystical: they’re formed exactly how you might imagine, by twisting the work as you go. Whether you’re new to cable knitting or cable crochet (yes, you read that right–you can cable in crochet, too!), I’ve got a lovely selection of cable-knit and cable-crochet patterns for you to try out today.

The winter hat is my go-to project for new ideas and stitches. It’s a great way to learn a new stitch because beanies are small projects that work up quickly, so the reward of accomplishment is more immediate than when working on a larger project. The Dunes Beanie Knitting Pattern from Stitch Hiker Designs is an easy cable knit beanie pattern that calls for super bulky (size 6) yarn, so it works up extra fast! And big yarn is so trendy these days. Top it with a large faux fur pompom (I love the selection from Gingersnap Handmade!)

Once you’ve got the hang of cable knitting, the Blacksod Hat Knitting Pattern from While They Dream is a great next project. With smaller yarn and a little more intricate pattern, you’ll find yourself immersed in a relaxing cable stitch pattern that is unisex. This intermediate knit beanie pattern is a great way to improve your knitting skills!

If you didn’t know before, you can get a cable look with crochet! It’s true! These cables pop and have a beautiful start and finish. I think I’m going to get this pattern just to learn this beautiful crochet cable technique! Learning new techniques to level-up my making is one of my favourite things!

I just love this Cozy Celtic Raglan Cable Knit Sweater from Knitatude with its cozy jumbo cowl and lovely celtic cable pattern in the front. Knit with size 6 super bulky yarn, this oversized cropped sweater works up quickly and is so warm for fall and winter!

Similar to the sweater, Knitatude has designed this Cozy Celtic Kerchief Knitting Pattern, which is perfect for layering under a denim jacket (as pictured) without the hassle of trying to fit the bulk of the sleeves in a tighter fitting garment! The look of a chunky cable-knit sweater without the extra bulk! Brilliant! I had to share this because it’s such a unique item that most people wouldn’t even think to search for such a thing!

Men’s Hat Patterns

A lot of knitters and crocheters are people who have men in their lives that they love to make things for. But many of us are attracted to fun pompoms, complicated stitch patterns, and slouchy hats that the dudes in our lives would just not be into. And I’m guilty of this, too. So if you’re looking for some simple, manly hat patterns, you’ve come to the right place. And most of these are crochet! I often lean towards knitting patterns when knitting for men because the fabric ends up being thinner, which is what Mr Evangelist prefers, so I know what a challenge it can be for crocheters to find a good men’s hat pattern. But there are plenty included here! Check them out and try one today!

This pattern comes in 6 sizes, from baby to adult large, so you can make one for the whole family! Add a pompom if you like and it’s a stylish hat for anyone! And who says men and boys can’t wear a slouchy hat? Check out this lovely Portland Slouchy Hat and Cowl Set Crochet Pattern. It mimics a knit seed stitch and has a lovely slight slouch to it. It comes in 5 sizes from 6 months to adult, so again, you can make this set for anyone in the family! CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE PORTLAND SLOUCHY HAT AND COWL SET CROCHET PATTERN.

Who says men’s hat patterns have to be solid colours? The Big Bay Beanie Crochet Pattern is a great multi-coloured pattern worked up with chunky weight yarn in 5 colours and it’s simple enough for a beginner/advanced beginner. I believe this pattern is also available for free on the designer’s blog, but for just a few bucks you can grab an easy-to-read, printable pdf pattern: CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE BIG BAY BEANIE CROCHET PATTERN.

Simple hats like the Basic Knit Beanie for Men and Boys Knitting Pattern is the kind of pattern I usually make for Mr Evangelist. He’s already got a pretty big head, so he doesn’t want to add the bulk of a thick and chunky hat to it. Also, while he’s trying to stay warm, sometimes those chunky hats make him too hot. He’s already pretty hot (woot woot!) so we don’t want to overdo it. 😉 The decreases on this knit hat pattern make a lovely swirled crown that sits nice and flat on the head. It’s a great guide to learning decreases. CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE BASIC KNIT BEANIE FOR MEN AND BOYS KNITTING PATTERN.

For a slightly textured ribbed crochet hat pattern, check out this Men’s Slouchy Knit-Look Crochet Hat Pattern. I love that it’s not super slouchy. That’s just the right amount of slouch for the men that I know. This is an intermediate crochet pattern in two adult sizes. It uses worsted weight yarn, so it’s a lovely project for some of that worsted weight yarn you have in your stash. CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE MEN’S SLOUCHY KNIT-LOOK CROCHET HAT PATTERN.

The Fisherman’s Cap Crochet Beanie Pattern is such a classic pattern that you can’t miss out on it. It’s a perfect beginner pattern made with basic stitches, so if you’re just learning, this pattern is for you! CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE FISHERMAN’S CAP CROCHET BEANIE PATTERN.

PATTERN RELEASE: Tufted Toque!

I’m so excited to announce that I have released my Tufted Toque pattern! It’s been quite the learning curve: writing up the pattern, getting it tech-edited, working with test knitters and learning the ropes of adding the pattern information to Ravelry and Etsy.

So, today’s the day! And here it is! The Tufted Toque pattern is a textured, slightly slouchy hat made with a fun stitch pattern that is made up of a few simple rows of knits and purls. Put them together in the right order and you’ve got this beautifully textured seersucker stitch! Worked in the round on circular needles, this pattern knits up quickly with a gorgeous, pillowy result!

You can buy the pattern for only $6.00 CAD from Ravelry by clicking the little buy now button above. If you prefer to use Etsy, it’s available here.

After working with testers of various levels of knitting skill and experience, I would say that this pattern is perfect for the advanced beginner, or an adventurous beginner. It doesn’t require a lot of specialized stitches, just knits and purls, increasing and decreasing. It’s a great pattern to practice following a pattern and watching the diamond tufts take shape. Even though it is accessible for beginners, my advanced knitters also enjoyed knitting up this pattern.

The pattern is written in 9 sizes, from Newborn to Adult Extra Large (I couldn’t leave out my big-headed husband, could I?), so you can make one for every member of the family and have matching toques for everyone!

Will you please share this cute hat pattern with your knitting friends and followers? Here’s a pin you can share to Pinterest!

Tufted Toque knit beanie pattern. This cute pillowy textured beanie comes in 9 sizes, from newborn to Adult X Large. It's a slightly slouchy beanie knitting pattern, perfect with a large faux fur pompom! Great pattern by #craftevangelist

Colourwork Beanies

Knit hats, toques, beanies, winter caps: whatever you call them they’re cuter with a fun pattern knit into them. Colourwork is a skill that is a little intermediate, but usually, these kinds of projects only require the basic knit and purl stitches. You just add some colours in there for a fun design. These kinds of projects are great for using up a partial skein of yarn and you can play around with colours to your heart’s content! I’ve found a bunch of great knit hat patterns for you to try out your intarsia or fair isle skills!

Warm Winter Weather Wear

Warm Winter Wear

Well, the winter weather has arrived, at least where I live. It’s not too bad just yet, so don’t mistake my announcement for complaining. But it is definitely time to break out the knit and crochet accessories to keep ears, necks, heads and hands warm this season. If you’re looking for a pattern to make for a gift to give this season or to keep yourself warm this winter, I’ve got a great collection of fashionable knit and crochet accessory patterns for you!

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

First off, these twisted ear warmers are all the rage this year. Great for keeping your ears warm while not messing up your top knot or ponytail. The River Ear Warmer twisted headband crochet pattern is a great and simple crochet pattern that a beginner could handle. The beauty of these little projects is that they only take a couple of hours and a partial skein of yarn. They make great stash-busting projects!

The Woven Headwarmer crochet pattern has a little more texture and has that lovely bowtie twist to finish it off! Super cute and what a fun pattern to highlight a soft and luscious yarn. If you only have one skein of beautiful and expensive yarn, this is your project. You can make up a few of these with that one gorgeous skein and have gifts for your closest friends!

Buffalo plaid is still super cute and trendy and it’s so super fun to see three colours of yarn come together to form this fun pattern. Don’t you love the large wooden button on this Buffalo Plaid Crochet Cowl Pattern? I love fun finishing touches like that. It makes a piece look so much more professional!

Here’s another gorgeous cowl to try out: the Triangle Scarf Crochet Pattern is a textured granny-stitch style cowl that would be a great welcome back to crochet project for those whose grannies taught them the simple granny square and that’s all they really remember. This would also be a great pattern to highlight some special yarn you’ve been saving.

Check out the fringe on this June Berry Cowl crochet pattern… with buttons as well! I love the gorgeous texture on this cowl pattern and fringe is so on-trend right now. It’s a great time to get working on this beautiful scarf, for you or for a friend!

If you’ve always wanted to try cables, the Cascades Big Knit Scarf Pattern is a great first cable project. With bulky yarn and just one big braid cable through the scarf, it’s a great project to practice and learn. Just a tip: if you’re just learning, using a light coloured yarn will help you to more easily see your work and make it easier to fix any mistakes.
