Cozy Men’s Cardigan Patterns to Knit and Crochet

My husband has put in a request for a sweater. He doesn’t do this a lot, even though he does love clothes and fashion. He knows that most commercially available sweaters are far more affordable to buy than to have me make. The cardigan he has requested is pictured below. It’s a cashmere cardigan, which means that it is pretty pricey from the store (but still probably less expensive than I could make it for if I were to use cashmere yarn). But it is nice to have something special and handmade and I can adjust it so it fits him the way he wants. And I get the fun (fun?) of figuring out a new pattern. It doesn’t look overly complicated, other than sorting out the collar/opening, but it just occurred to me this morning that the last cardigan I made for myself is a pretty similar construction, so I might begin with that as a starting point.

I can’t remember if I kept it (shame if I didn’t). It was yellow with cute red ladybug buttons. It took way less time than a long hooded cardigan like this one would take, but I really love the relaxed style of this cardigan.

The Gear Cardigan Knitting Pattern from Vi Talina Craft is a pattern I considered basing my husband’s cardigan off of. It has a really different collar though, and I think that’s the tricky part. I do love the texture on this cardigan. How do we feel about no buttons on this guy? And also, dammit, where are the pockets?!

The Men’s Easy Knit Cardigan Knitting Pattern from Hobo Hooks gets a pass on no pockets because it’s not a big chunky cardigan. It looks like it would be a relatively quick knit and has a timeless style that I think any guy would appreciate.

Ok, maybe I should just show my husband this bad boy and call it a day. The Men’s Striped Cardigan with Pockets Knitting Pattern from Best Knitting PDF has it all: stripes? Check! Integrated pockets? Check! Oversized shawl collar? Check! Stylish, waist-cinching tie? Check!

Ok, back to crochet. I’m not sure how I feel about this Men’s Crochet Double Fronted Cardigan from Seyhall Crochet Design… it’s not totally my jam, but I do appreciate the wide shawl collar and I love the textural elements. If you’re a crocheter looking for a double-breasted (or double-fronted? What’s up with that?) cardigan sweater pattern for your beau, this is just the thing!

Here’s a gender-neutral cardigan for you. If you need some motivation to make a cardigan for your man, perhaps you can motivate yourself by imagining yourself borrowing it? Ok, now here we are with the ladies. Sorry. I think the Meara Fisherman Cable Sweater Crochet Pattern from Hopeful Honey Designs is a gender-neutral cable sweater pattern that anyone could wear. It’s another classic. And did you see??? It’s CROCHET. Crocheted cables. So awesome… and cozy!

When I saw this Men’s Striped Raglan Pullover Sweater Knitting Pattern from Hobo Hooks, it reminded me of the colours of the cardigan that my husband wants. And honestly, I’m not finding exactly what I’m looking for so far, which is a little disappointing. I hope I can find a nice yarn in the colours he wants! Colour blocking is still pretty in right now, so this throwback vintage pattern is right on trend. So pick it up and get making today!

Time to Make a Fall Sweater

It has been quite a hot summer here in Edmonton this year. We only had our first real rainy day last week! We’ve had more 30+ degree (Celcius… 86 F for our American friends) days than any summer on record. I wish I were at a lake or in a pool floating on an inflatable for some of those days instead of renovating my house, but here we are and the only way out is through! Anyway, the slight dip in temperature and a release from one of my favourite pattern designers got me thinking about sweaters, so here’s small collection of stylish patterns to get you started in working on making a sweater in time for the temperatures to turn a little cooler.

I can’t wait to make this fun sweater!

I’ve been following Sewrella on Instagram and she recently came out with her Folklore collection, inspired by Taylor Swifts Folklore album. One of the options was a kit for the Folklore Cardigan, which LionBrand is also offering as a kit. The Dem Bones Sweater Knitting Pattern from Eileen Casey Creations is such a cute and fun knitting pattern, perfect for Halloween. I wish this came in my size; I think it would be so fun. But remembering back to the time when I had fussy toddlers who didn’t want to wear costumes, I think I might have been able to get them into this sweater, which would have been their whole costume. As teenagers now, they would probably even wear it day to day (I really have no idea–I’m often wrong about these things).

An Oversized Load of Oversized Sweater Knitting Patterns

We have had a very mild winter here so far in Edmonton! It’s been so gorgeous and great to be out walking. And since that’s the only place I really go, the weather has been remarkably cooperative for long walks in the river valley and short ones around the neighbourhood. But I heard on the news that there’s some kind of polar vortex coming our way, which sounds really ominous, but to most Canadians, it really just means “winter.” Ooooohhh it’s going to get really cold and snowy in January and February? Sounds seasonal. Sounds normal. But it also sounds like you’re going to want a big cozy oversized sweater! I’ve found a great collection of oversized cozy sweaters for you to knit to stay warm and cozy during any polar vortext or “winter” or whatever you want to call it. Head in the Clouds Sweater knitting pattern from Lauren Aston Designs is inspired by hot air balloons because of its incredible balloon-like sleeves! This beginner knitting pattern works up quickly with super bulky yarn with sizes from 6-28. There are instructions to make it either cropped, waist, hip-length or even longer!

The Ski Lodge Pullover Knitting Pattern from Erin Beth Crochet is another simple pattern with a helpful YouTube video and knits up quickly with Lionbrand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn.

This Cozy Mock Neck Knit Sweater Pattern from Well Loved Knits is a beginner-friendly pattern designed with a cropped silhouette and about 4″ of positive ease. You can make it an oversized fit by knitting a size up. Super cozy with super bulky yarn, this sweater knits up quickly so you’ll be cozy in no time!

A Bakers Dozen Of Fall Sweater Patterns

As you welcome fall this year, it’s a great time to embrace sweater weather! Fall in Edmonton (where I live) is usually a pretty short season. Winter likes to extend its reach well into the fall months, so it’s not uncommon for us to have snow by Thanksgiving or Halloween.
