Cozy Men’s Cardigan Patterns to Knit and Crochet

My husband has put in a request for a sweater. He doesn’t do this a lot, even though he does love clothes and fashion. He knows that most commercially available sweaters are far more affordable to buy than to have me make. The cardigan he has requested is pictured below. It’s a cashmere cardigan, which means that it is pretty pricey from the store (but still probably less expensive than I could make it for if I were to use cashmere yarn). But it is nice to have something special and handmade and I can adjust it so it fits him the way he wants. And I get the fun (fun?) of figuring out a new pattern. It doesn’t look overly complicated, other than sorting out the collar/opening, but it just occurred to me this morning that the last cardigan I made for myself is a pretty similar construction, so I might begin with that as a starting point.

If you don’t have a wife/partner who will devote hours of their life to knitting a cardigan for you with out a pattern, you can buy one of these here. Or if you don’t want to try to figure out your own pattern to make your beloved a beautiful handmade cardigan, check out some of these patterns for some great options.

You could try the Easy Men’s Hooded Jacket from Vintage Pattern Faves. I think the first sweater I ever knit had a hood, but it was a 3-month old size, for my firstborn. I can’t remember if I kept it (shame if I didn’t). It was yellow with cute red ladybug buttons. It took way less time than a long hooded cardigan like this one would take, but I really love the relaxed style of this cardigan.

I shall not exclude the crocheters from this collection of men’s cardigans and sweaters. Check out the Mountain Ridge Men’s Cardigan Crochet Pattern from MJs Off The Hook Designs if you are a crocheter wanting to try making a cardigan for your loved one or yourself.

This Willem Cardigan Crochet Pattern from Home of the Hook also has a hood! Hooded cardigans for every kind of fibre artist! I would put some pockets on this bad boy (because everyone needs more pockets!), but this one is also pretty cool as is.

The Gear Cardigan Knitting Pattern from Vi Talina Craft is a pattern I considered basing my husband’s cardigan off of. It has a really different collar though, and I think that’s the tricky part. I do love the texture on this cardigan. How do we feel about no buttons on this guy? And also, dammit, where are the pockets?!

The Men’s Easy Knit Cardigan Knitting Pattern from Hobo Hooks gets a pass on no pockets because it’s not a big chunky cardigan. It looks like it would be a relatively quick knit and has a timeless style that I think any guy would appreciate.

Ok, maybe I should just show my husband this bad boy and call it a day. The Men’s Striped Cardigan with Pockets Knitting Pattern from Best Knitting PDF has it all: stripes? Check! Integrated pockets? Check! Oversized shawl collar? Check! Stylish, waist-cinching tie? Check!

Ok, back to crochet. I’m not sure how I feel about this Men’s Crochet Double Fronted Cardigan from Seyhall Crochet Design… it’s not totally my jam, but I do appreciate the wide shawl collar and I love the textural elements. If you’re a crocheter looking for a double-breasted (or double-fronted? What’s up with that?) cardigan sweater pattern for your beau, this is just the thing!

Here’s a gender-neutral cardigan for you. If you need some motivation to make a cardigan for your man, perhaps you can motivate yourself by imagining yourself borrowing it? The Field Day Jacket Knit Cardigan Sweater Pattern from Ozetta is the perfect sweater to borrow for a cozy night in or a stylish walk to the coffee shop.

This Vintage Men’s Cabled Cardigan Knitting Pattern from Hobo Hooks has subtle cables down the sleeves and button band and your man will look just as dapper as this dude wearing this cardigan with integrated pockets that are so nice this guy doesn’t even want to put his hands in them!

Ok, I know we’ve veered away from the cardigan here, but I was perusing looking at all the men’s sweater options in order to find something I might be able to modify. The Men’s Ribbed Sweater Knitting Pattern from Knit a Pattern is a beautiful ribbed knit sweater pattern that is another timeless classic if you are looking for one.

If you’re looking to get started with something simpler, the Men’s Easy Beginner Sweater Pullover Knitting Pattern from Vintage Pattern Faves is another stylish and timeless knit sweater pattern for you to check out. It is made with chunky yarn, so it works up quickly and you’ll be borrowing this sweater from your man in no time!

Ok, now here we are with the ladies. Sorry. I think the Meara Fisherman Cable Sweater Crochet Pattern from Hopeful Honey Designs is a gender-neutral cable sweater pattern that anyone could wear. It’s another classic. And did you see??? It’s CROCHET. Crocheted cables. So awesome… and cozy!

When I saw this Men’s Striped Raglan Pullover Sweater Knitting Pattern from Hobo Hooks, it reminded me of the colours of the cardigan that my husband wants. And honestly, I’m not finding exactly what I’m looking for so far, which is a little disappointing. I hope I can find a nice yarn in the colours he wants! Colour blocking is still pretty in right now, so this throwback vintage pattern is right on trend. So pick it up and get making today!

I hope you found a men’s cardigan or sweater pattern here to make for the man in your life (or yourself!). Grab a pattern and some yarn and get making today. Or pin it for later!

Time to Make a Fall Sweater

It has been quite a hot summer here in Edmonton this year. We only had our first real rainy day last week! We’ve had more 30+ degree (Celcius… 86 F for our American friends) days than any summer on record. I wish I were at a lake or in a pool floating on an inflatable for some of those days instead of renovating my house, but here we are and the only way out is through! Anyway, the slight dip in temperature and a release from one of my favourite pattern designers got me thinking about sweaters, so here’s small collection of stylish patterns to get you started in working on making a sweater in time for the temperatures to turn a little cooler.

The “Super Simple” Sweater Knitting Pattern from ahoneyknits is just what it says: a super simple sweater! Perfect for beginners, the chunky cropped sweater works up quickly and is a great stylish sweater for this fall. Looks so warm and cozy.

The Bubblegum Jumper from Aliza Knits is a fun, textured sweater using super chunky yarn to make a warm and cozy, bobbly, cropped sweater in no time. It has wide balloon sleeves and is size-inclusive with sizeds from XS to 5XL.

The Chainette Turtleneck Crochet Pattern from KnitsNKnotsWpg is a lovely crochet turtleneck with a wide fit in the bust, but with fitted sleeves at the wrist for a flattering fit for all body types. With a really comfortable and roomy fit, this pattern is size inclusive with sizes up to 5X (bust sizes from 28-62″).

The Vivian Sweater Crochet Pattern from The Easy Design is another pullover sweater pattern with a lovely bobbly yoke. The pattern comes in 7 sizes from XS up to 3XL and is a simple crochet pattern, so it’s very beginner friendly. Imagine learning to crochet and then making your very own sweater!

The Cable Crush Hoodie is the new release from Knitatude was the pattern that I just had to snap up and got me inspired to create this pattern round up. This is a cropped, hooded, batwing sweater that ist just so much fun. The hood has a rounded tip, instead of a point and the sleeves taper down to a lovely fit at the wrists. I can’t wait to make this fun sweater!

I’ve been following Sewrella on Instagram and she recently came out with her Folklore collection, inspired by Taylor Swifts Folklore album. One of the options was a kit for the Folklore Cardigan, which LionBrand is also offering as a kit. The pattern itself is free (just scroll down on the kit page and there’s a button to download the pattern), but you can get all the yarn you need in a handy kit from LionBrand, which is always helpful. Watch for a sale and you can always get a good deal on sweater-quantity yarn from LionBrand!

The Dem Bones Sweater Knitting Pattern from Eileen Casey Creations is such a cute and fun knitting pattern, perfect for Halloween. I wish this came in my size; I think it would be so fun. But remembering back to the time when I had fussy toddlers who didn’t want to wear costumes, I think I might have been able to get them into this sweater, which would have been their whole costume. As teenagers now, they would probably even wear it day to day (I really have no idea–I’m often wrong about these things).

Well, that’s all the sweater patterns I have time to wrangle up for you today. I hope you found one that inspires you to get making as the weather turns cool again and we seek to warm up indoors. When I’m happily sitting in my new cozy living room, I’ll be picking up that Cable Crush Hoodie pattern to lounge around in this winter. Grab a pattern today or pin it for later!

It's time to start making your fall sweaters! Get a jump on the cool season ahead by grabbing one of these great knit or crochet sweater patterns and get making today! #KnittingPattern #CrochetPattern #KnitSweater #CrochetSweater #Yarn #Crafts #PatternRoundUp #CraftEvangelist

Unwinding with Cable Knit & Crochet Patterns

There’s just something so special about cables in knitting and crochet: the twists and texture of braids and intricate designs. Cables can appear intimidating to the new crafter, but they’re really pretty simple. They require some careful attention, but they’re nothing mystical: they’re formed exactly how you might imagine, by twisting the work as you go. Whether you’re new to cable knitting or cable crochet (yes, you read that right–you can cable in crochet, too!), I’ve got a lovely selection of cable-knit and cable-crochet patterns for you to try out today.

The winter hat is my go-to project for new ideas and stitches. It’s a great way to learn a new stitch because beanies are small projects that work up quickly, so the reward of accomplishment is more immediate than when working on a larger project. The Dunes Beanie Knitting Pattern from Stitch Hiker Designs is an easy cable knit beanie pattern that calls for super bulky (size 6) yarn, so it works up extra fast! And big yarn is so trendy these days. Top it with a large faux fur pompom (I love the selection from Gingersnap Handmade!)

Once you’ve got the hang of cable knitting, the Blacksod Hat Knitting Pattern from While They Dream is a great next project. With smaller yarn and a little more intricate pattern, you’ll find yourself immersed in a relaxing cable stitch pattern that is unisex. This intermediate knit beanie pattern is a great way to improve your knitting skills!

If you didn’t know before, you can get a cable look with crochet! It’s true! The Camdyn Cable Crochet Hat Pattern from Lakeside Loops is a great first cable crochet project to try out this new technique! This hat comes in 6 sizes: Newborn to Adult Men’s hat. This pattern includes detailed photos and a helpful video along with a graph/chart, which accompany the easy to follow written instructions. You’re sure to have a ball of medium weight (size 4, worsted) yarn on hand to have everything you need to make this lovely crocheted winter hat today!

When you’re feeling more adventurous, you might like to explore a cable knit garment. Start with this Easy Cable Knit Sweater Knitting Pattern from Northern Loop Knitwear. It has a gorgeous cabled sleeve and is made with a large, chunky yarn, which means it will work up quickly with fewer stitches and have a casual cozy vibe!

And you can even crochet a cabled sweater! The V-Neck Cable Sweater Crochet Pattern from Beauty Crochet Pattern also has a lovely cable textured sleeve on this classic pullover sweater pattern! This pattern includes many pictures and a step by step photo tutorial with measurements, stitch counts and extra notes to guide you along your way to making this lovely sweater.

The River Braid Sweater Knitting Pattern from Katrines Designs is knit in one piece–sideways!–in soft merino wool to make up this relaxed, but elegant modern sweater with a loose fit. I just love this style and the lovely gorgeous cabled sleeves!

Moving the cables to the front of the sweater, this Irish Cable Sweater Knitting Pattern from Carraig Designs Crafts is such a lovely modern cable knit top pattern, as well. With a breezy open look and loose relaxed cables, this short sleeved sweater is the perfect layering piece for the office with a classic style.

For some crocheted cables down the front, check out the Crochet Cable Stitch V Neck Sweater from TCDDIY. The textures on this sweater are so lovely and intricate, definitely a project that won’t have you bored with plenty of textures and stitches to enjoy! There are a number of other lovely cable-crocheted patterns in the TCDDIY shop, as well. Definitely worth checking out!

Can you believe that this lovely sweater is crocheted???! The Valencia Infinity Cable Crochet Sweater Pattern from Briana K Designs has a chunky, horizontal twist cable that uses an innovative technique for cables that do not have gaps or holes behind them. These cables pop and have a beautiful start and finish. I think I’m going to get this pattern just to learn this beautiful crochet cable technique! Learning new techniques to level-up my making is one of my favourite things!

I just love this Cozy Celtic Raglan Cable Knit Sweater from Knitatude with its cozy jumbo cowl and lovely celtic cable pattern in the front. Knit with size 6 super bulky yarn, this oversized cropped sweater works up quickly and is so warm for fall and winter!

Similar to the sweater, Knitatude has designed this Cozy Celtic Kerchief Knitting Pattern, which is perfect for layering under a denim jacket (as pictured) without the hassle of trying to fit the bulk of the sleeves in a tighter fitting garment! The look of a chunky cable-knit sweater without the extra bulk! Brilliant! I had to share this because it’s such a unique item that most people wouldn’t even think to search for such a thing!

If garments are not your jam, or you just want to bring that cable texture home, check out this Chunky Oversized Cable Knit Blanket Pattern from Knit Purl Curl. Knit with 2 strands of super bulky yarn held together, this 48″ x 80″ blanket knits up quickly and will add a touch of cozyness to any room! This is the perfect winter throw blanket!

For a more intricate cable knit pattern, try your more experience and patient knitting hands at this November Aran Afghan Knitting Pattern from Tiger Needles. With several beautiful and unique cabled knitting motifs and textures, this pattern is sure to keep you interested and creates a stunning piece. The project is worked in 5 pieces and seamed together for a beautiful bedspread or large throw blanket.

We mustn’t leave the crocheters out of the afghan game: the Calming Cables Crochet Blanket Pattern from Crochet Patterns N More is a lovely crocheted throw pattern that is full of amazing texture and makes a solid yarn look glorious! Such a classic look to this blanket, you will be so proud to display this comfy and gorgeous afghan in your home!

I hope you feel inspired to try out cable knitting or cable crocheting if you haven’t ventured into it before. It’s such a classic and beautiful look and the technique is definitely worth learning! An Oversized Load of Oversized Sweater Knitting Patterns

We have had a very mild winter here so far in Edmonton! It’s been so gorgeous and great to be out walking. And since that’s the only place I really go, the weather has been remarkably cooperative for long walks in the river valley and short ones around the neighbourhood. But I heard on the news that there’s some kind of polar vortex coming our way, which sounds really ominous, but to most Canadians, it really just means “winter.” Ooooohhh it’s going to get really cold and snowy in January and February? Sounds seasonal. Sounds normal. But it also sounds like you’re going to want a big cozy oversized sweater! I’ve found a great collection of oversized cozy sweaters for you to knit to stay warm and cozy during any polar vortext or “winter” or whatever you want to call it. Check out these stylish and cozy oversized sweater patterns and get knitting today for warmth tomorrow!

As you welcome fall this year, it’s a great time to embrace sweater weather! Fall in Edmonton (where I live) is usually a pretty short season. But this year, the weather has been holding so far and the forecast is looking good for the next couple of weeks. I have been taking advantage of the lovely temperatures to enjoy walks in our beautiful river valley. Wearing sweaters is a great way to enjoy the outdoor weather longer.
