Free Knitting Pattern: Chrysalis Cardigan

One of my goals for 2019 was to write more patterns. I want to write/publish one per month. Even though January was the Longest.Month.Ever, I still managed to miss my first marker. Partly because I’m new to this and partly because I’m a bit of a perfectionist, it’s probably not as great as I want it to be. But probably, they’re going to get better.

I wanted to wait until I had better photos. I wanted to wait until I got all my feedback from my test knitters. But I’m new to test knitters and my test knitters are new to test knitting. But I’m going to do it anyway. And I’m going to learn and maybe I’ll re-release it when it’s better. But here it is. If you make it and give me feedback, I will love you forever and I will send you an ad-free pdf of the pattern, and all updates when they come out.

This is a one-size pattern. If you want a smaller or bigger fit, try casting on fewer/more stitches in multiples of 3 and adjusting the total stitches accordingly. Ensure that you have an odd number of stitches for the edging stage. This will make the cardigan wider. To make it longer, knit more rows (try 24 inches of body).

Supplies needed

  • Size 11 (8.00 mm) 32” circular needles (I love my KnitPicks!)
  • Size 10.5 (6.5 mm) 45” circular needles
  • 4 – 7 oz (198 g) balls Bernat Premium Tweeds yarn (or comparable yarn to achieve gauge. You will hold 2 strands together for this pattern)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Skills used

  • Knit, purl, increase, decrease
  • Provisional cast on
  • Knitting in the round

Need to sharpen your knitting skills to take on this project? Check out some online knitting classes from Blueprint!

Abbreviations

  • k – knit
  • p – purl
  • yo – yarn over
  • sl1pw – slip 1 purl-wise
  • k2tog – knit 2 stitches together
  • ssk – slip, slip, knit
Chrysalis Cardigan FREE Knitting Pattern at www.craftevangelist.ca

Gauge

4” x 4” = 12 stitches x 16 rows in the main body pattern. If your gauge is different, adjust by using larger or smaller needles.

Special stitches

Knit 2 together (k2tog): insert your right needle under the next 2 stitches and knit them together. This is a right-leaning decrease stitch.

Slip, slip, knit (ssk): slip 1 stitch from left needle to right needle knit-wise (as if you were to knit it). Slip another stitch knit-wise. Insert your left needle back into the 2 slipped stitches from the back and knit the 2 stitches together through the back loop. This is a left-leaning decrease stitch.

Pattern

Provisional cast on

With 2 strands of yarn held together, using 32” size 11 (8.00 mm) circular needles, loosely cast on 105 stitches with a provisional cast-on using the 45” circular needle cable for the base of your provisional cast on. Find provisional cast on using circular needle cable instructions here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XIr2GiqjQg&t=182s

Alternate cast on

If you prefer to use a regular cast on, you may do so, but it will result in a seam along the edge where you join the cast on edge with the working edge.

Foundation Row

(WS) *k1, p1* repeat to last stitch, k1

Lace Pattern on the Chrysalis Cardigan FREE Knitting Pattern at www.craftevangelist.ca
This is what the lace pattern of the body will look like.

Body

Row 1 (RS): sl1pw, p1, *k2tog, yo, p1* repeat from * to last stitch, k1
Row 2 (WS): sl1pw, k1 *p2, k1* to last stitch, k1
Row 3 (RS): sl1pw, p1, *yo, ssk, p1* repeat to last stitch, k1
Row 4 (WS): work as row 2

Continue in this pattern until work measures 22 inches from cast on edge, ending with a wrong side row.

Note: As the pattern takes shape, if you can’t remember if the last right side row was a row 1 or a row 3, pay attention to where the YO space is from the previous RS row.  On each right side row, you will be closing up the space you created with the YO of the last right side row. And creating a new YO space in an alternating space.

On the WS, you should be knitting the knits and purling the purls & YOs. If you missed a YO in the previous row, it is easy to pick up a YO in the WS row.

You will notice that we are knitting the last stitch and slipping purl-wise the first stitch of every row. This creates a clean edge which will make up the arm holes.

Armhole edge on the Chrysalis Cardigan FREE Knitting Pattern at www.craftevangelist.ca

Join cast on edge using the provisional cast on

Use the right needle of the size 10.5 circular needle that you used for the provisional cast with the left needle of the size 11 needle to work the first half of edging round 1.

Round 1 (RS): Turn. Sl1pw. K1, p1 to end of the row. Remove size 11 needle. Place a marker.

Fold the cast on edge up to meet the working edge, right side facing you and begin using the smaller needle from the cast on edge.

Joining cast on edge with working edge on the Chrysalis Cardigan FREE Knitting Pattern at www.craftevangelist.ca

Join cast on edge using a regular cast on

If you used a regular cast on, pick up and knit 105 stitches along the cast on edge with the size 10.5 circular needle.

Seed stitch edging

You should now be using only the size 10.5 circular needles. K1, p1 to last stitch in round. Join to the beginning of the previous round by k2tog the last stitch & the first stitch of the previous row. This will decrease the total stitches in the round to 209.

All Remaining Rounds (RS): *p1, k1 around. The odd number of stitches means you will be knitting the purls & purling the knits, resulting in the seed stitch pattern.

Continue in this pattern until seed stitch edge measures 5 inches, using the stitch marker as your round beginning/end. Bind off with your preferred stretchy bind off. (I like this method).

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

You can add an optional button closure with a small i cord button hole loop just above chest level to help keep the cardigan closed.

Vest Patterns

I found some great patterns for you to check out today! Vests. Are they cool? I hope so, because I’m really liking them lately! Which one do you like?

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

This lacy Daydreamer Crochet Vest pattern from Megmade with Love looks easy and carefree. Don’t you love that fringe?

In a similar style, but with a little more warmth, The Wanderer Vest from KayKrochets also boasts an adorable fringe… and maybe a little less chain stitch!

I’m LOVING this faux fur crocheted vest pattern from Mama in a Stitch. This is definitely near the top of my list and is a fantastic use of Lion Brand’s new Go For Faux yarn.

I think knitting might be a little easier with this Go For Faux yarn though. I think it’d be easier to keep track of your stitches if they were on your needles all the time. This Go For Faux Vest knitting pattern from Knitatude looks simple and cute.

Another long fringe-y vest pattern… hmmm… I wonder what I should make? I keep looking at really similar patterns, so… ? hahaha. Also, I love the name of this vest from Hopeful Honey Designs: Whispering Birch Bohemian Vest.

My mind doesn’t immediately go to a pattern like this for a vest, but this Chain Link Armored Cowl Crocheted Vest Pattern from Woods and Wool Shop is super cozy looking.

I’m also quite liking this asymmetrical crocheted vest pattern: The Sherwood Vest from Newborn Knots: simple and trendy. Also, I love large buttons like that.

Here’s another knitting pattern for the knitters in the bunch. This Justice Vest Knitting Pattern from Bromefields is a great beginner pattern. Even as a more advanced knitter, sometimes a beginner pattern is just so refreshing because you can make it look amazing without as much effort or concentration as a more advanced pattern.

If you’re looking for a vest pattern, be sure to check some of these out and pin it to share with your friends!

Handmade Handbags

While I’ve never really thought of myself as a handbag person, as it turns out, I’m quite drawn to them. I tend to under-purchase in general, so I tend not to buy myself too many. I have made myself a couple of bags before, but they’ve never turned into my regular handbag. I use one to hold WIPs and another I made to carry some supplies to church. It might just be time to make another because I’ve found some great looking patterns! Check out these beautiful handmade handbag patterns!

This Audrey Hobo Bag by Hooked on Patterns caught my eye most recently. I love the slouchy hobo bag style with the sturdy textured stitch at the top. This looks like it would make a lovely bag to transport projects!

I am also very drawn to this Window Frost Handbag Crochet Pattern by Outstanding Crochet. I love the lacy flower motif. It looks so delicate and could easily be dressed up or down.

Some people don’t have time for all the crafty stuff. For them, there’s this made to order Crochet Lomo Camera Purse from the shop Meemanan. If you’re really keen on making one yourself, you can find a pattern for a similar camera purse here.

The Kiara Bag crochet pattern from the shop Ruby Webbs is a lovely textured handbag that comes in 2 different sizes, one of which looks large enough to hold a laptop! I love how sturdy it looks!

Need some more skills under your belt before you can tackle this awesome bag? Grab a subscription to Blueprint for some super helpful online crochet classes!

I guess all of these patterns have been crochet up until now. If you haven’t quite ventured into hooking, the Horseshoe Cable Handbag pdf knitting pattern from the Etsy shop LOTCP is a lovely looking cable-knit pattern for a handbag. If you’re looking for some wooden bag handles, check out some of these.

Another lovely knitting pattern for a handbag is this Cherry Blossom Felted Bag Knitting Pattern from the shop Splendid Sparrow. If you’ve never felted before, a handbag is a perfect project to experiment with that! Size isn’t quite as important as a garment, so if it ends up a little smaller than anticipated, it isn’t the end of the world. And isn’t that lovely cherry blossom embroidered embellishment lovely?

UPDATE: Unfortunately this pattern is no longer available. Check out these other Felted Knit Bag Patterns for some beautiful options.

I hope you’ve found some inspiration for some handmade handbag patterns. Please pin it for later or to share with your friends!

Sweet Sweaters

Now that Christmas is over, it’s time to start dreaming of selfish projects! Winter is such a great time to cozy up with some yarn and a more involved project to make for yourself! I think it’s a great year to make a sweater for myself, don’t you? Check out some of these lovely sweater patterns and choose one to make for yourself (or as ANOTHER gift, I guess, you generous maker, you).

While this model may be sporting a pair of cutoffs with this sweater, I think this Clarke Pullover pattern would make a great all season sweater. Cute and comfy for summer evenings or winter weekends. I love stripes, so this pullover is just my style! Definitely a contender!

I love the stylish simplicity of this Drift Cable Knit Raglan Sweater Pattern. I love this grey wool and that it is knit seamlessly in the round from top down. If you’ve never knit top-down before, it is the cat’s meow! Why? You can be sure it’s the right length! No more too short or too long pullovers! Hold it up to yourself as you go and ensure the length is to your preference. Also, seamless! No seams means extra comfort, and no sewing afterward!

Update: Unfortunately this pattern is no longer available. Check out these other cable knit sweater patterns to try out.

This Christmas, I found myself looking for a festive sweater to wear to holiday events. We don’t usually attend very fancy Christmas parties, so a nice sweater will almost always suffice. I had a hard time finding just what I wanted, so I might just have to make something that will work for me. This Icelandic snowflake yoke sweater pattern is sweet and winter-y without being overly Christmassy, which is nice because then you can wear it all season instead of just at festive events.

Perhaps a cardigan is more you thing. A couple years ago, I knit myself a similar cardigan to this Greystone Cardigan (but mine doesn’t have POCKETS like this one does!!!) during Lent while I gave up Facebook. It was so lovely to get something so lovely made instead of just staring at a screen. I’m a little embarrassed to say that I didn’t give up Facebook permanently from that time, but recently I’ve pulled back my time spent there and my time spent on my phone overall, which I’m happy with. So, if you are trying to wean yourself off screens a little bit more, perhaps you should pick up your knitting again!

Update: this pattern is no longer available, but you can find some other good knit cardigan pattern options here.

I’m a big fan of very simple and classic patterns, so this Easy Raglan Sweater Pattern with Video Tutorial is a great beginner project, but also a beautiful way to show off a favourite yarn and knock the execution out of the park to make a really professional looking final product.

But back to stripes. Here’s another striped pattern paired with a casual pair of cutoffs. I love this Sea Breeze Sweater Knitting Pattern by All About Ami. Again, I think this sweater would make a lovely all season sweater, perfect for both winter and summer! And STRIPES!

Which sweater do you like? Are you planning a more involved project for this winter? I loved my Lenton knitting project from 2016; knitting is a great time for reflection and meditation, keeping your hands busy and your mind in and out of focus on the pattern and your thoughts. Lovely. Pin this so you don’t forget about these lovely projects later!

Winter Break Projects

Even though I’m not quite finished up the knitting & crochet projects that I have planned for Christmas gifts (I still have 10 DAYS, people. Don’t judge me), I have already begun to think about a more involved project for the Christmas break. I am fortunate enough to work for an organization where I get the days between Christmas and New Years off, and it is quite lovely. So during that time, I often embark on a more involved project, which involves sitting on the couch for days at a time, getting up only to replenish my coffee (& Baileys). Which one should I make this year?

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

I hadn’t seen this lovely cocoon-style cardigan, the Inmost Cardigan crochet pattern when I was looking at cocoon cardigans a little while ago. I love the colour this is made in and the zigzag rows in this pattern. This looks really interesting to crochet!

I’m a huge fan of All About Ami! She has the most gorgeous photos of her knit and crochet work! The Midtown Cardigan Knitting Pattern is a lovely casual cardigan; it looks so cosy to stay warm in the office. (Also, I love that colour!)

Or maybe I should work on a classic sweater for myself. I have an idea for a sweater that I can’t seem to find anywhere else but I think this
Rainbow Trail pullover knitting pattern might give me a good base for where to start. I’ve knit myself cardigans and shrugs, but never a pullover. Also, I love stripes.

If I were to make this Crochet Poncho Pattern, I would have to make it in a different colour, because it is nearly identical to a store-bought knit poncho that I already own. It is pretty and simple and crochet!

Blankets also make lovely more involved projectst. The Makawee Blanket crochet pattern looks like it would be great to snuggle under by the fire while you work on it. So cosy.

I’m not sure I’m going to get to these before Christmas, but I know my husband would love a pair of these Adidas Inspired Sneakers for Men

Or maybe I should finally conquer the sock? I’ve knit stockings. That’s like turning a heel, right? Is that the hard part? Anyway, this Bywater Striped Sock Knitting Pattern looks like a straight-forward and simple knit sock pattern, which seems like exactly where I’d like to start.

Or I could work on a more involved amigurumi like this Garik the Pug crochet pattern. Isn’t he cute?

I know I’m not going to get to these Hamilton Amigurumi Patterns before Christmas time, but I know one thirteen year old who would be super impressed by these! I would probably have time to get them all made by her birthday.

Or possibly, I’ll take on a whole new craft. I have done a little bit of embroidery before, but mostly in junior high home ec class. This Blossoming Garden Embroidery Kit is gorgeous and would make a lovely little piece of decor for spring. It’s just around the corner, right?

So, what are your plans over the Christmas break? Do you get some extra time off to hang out with your family or to make some crafts? What would you make for a winter break project?

Marvellous Mittens

I posted a round up of fingerless gloves I was choosing between a few weeks ago when I was complaining of my freezing fingers in my office.  I did make a pair, but now we’re onto full-on winter in these parts, so you need mittens whenever you venture out of the house. Which pair should I make next? There are so many lovely knit and crochet patterns to make. Which do you like? (They also make great gifts, especially chunky crocheted mittens: they work up super quickly!

I’m a big fan of these chunky knit Cabled Hat and Mittens Pattern. Bonus hat pattern! Right? So classic and perfect for showing off a lovely yarn!

The Helix Mittens knitting pattern is another great knit mitten pattern. Look at the fun swirl in these lovely mittens!

The Jesse Mittens crochet pattern has a nice texture with a contrasting cuff, they set off any winter outfit. This same designer also has a hat pattern that matches!

Cabled Mittens Crochet Pattern by All About Ami (fellow Edmontonian!) are a cute mitten with a cable knit pattern for crocheters. I think the cable-knit look is what a lot of crocheters are kind of envious of knitters for. You can learn both! I learned to knit after I learned to crochet, so I knit continental and it feels so much more natural than the English method to me.

Frosty Forest Mittens crochet pattern are another chunky crochet mitten pattern that look toasty warm and would crochet up quickly for a last minute gift!

One day I want to make some of these ultra warm Alpaca Thrum Mittens! All that roving inside makes them super warm and cozy and the little puffy heart stitch on the outside is adorable!

I’m a huge fan of simple knitting patterns, so I love these Frisco Mittens, which are another pattern that would highlight and show off a beautiful yarn! Sometimes you save that lovely stuff for just the right project. These cozy mittens look just right for that.

Keep your fingers busy and then warm with one of these lovely pair of mittens! Pick up a pattern today! Or pin it for tomorrow!

Cosy Cocoon Cardigans

Cozy or cosy? Whichever way you spell it, it spells warm! I’m having a tough time adjusting to the change in temperature this year (especially in my office where someone is randomly turning on the AC!), so I’ve been looking for a cardigan I can keep at my desk to deal with the fluctuating temperatures and stay toasty while I work! I’ve collected a few patterns that I like here. These cocoon cardigans have been very popular and they look super warm. What do you think? Which one will you put on your needles/hook?

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

I really like the woven stitch detail on the cuffs and edging of this Celtic Cocoon Sweater Crochet Pattern from byaccessorize. This looks super cozy for warming up at work.

Then there this Oversized Scoop Sweater knitting pattern from bromefields. It looks like a super easy knitting pattern that I could make while I watch tv. That’s the beauty of knitting… if it’s an easy enough pattern, you don’t even have to look at it for a good chunk of the time. I once knit a scarf for my brother in law while I read a book!

If you are relatively new to crochet and all you remember is a granny square that your granny taught you, you could try this Granny Cocoon Shrug crochet pattern by Rove Handmade. This might be too “airy” for my needs though. But it’s super stylish and straight-forward if you’re looking for a nice accessory.

This easy knitting pattern for a cocoon cardigan from Knitty Sunny looks like it would also be an easy knit. One of my favourite things about easy knitting patterns is that when you are an intermediate or advanced knitter, these projects look SOOO good. Sometimes I stretch myself by knitting something complicated. Sometimes I knock it out of the park and knit something easy that looks incredible.

This beautiful cable-knit Silver Cocoon knitting pattern from Bummbul looks cozy and lovely as well. Tell me, which one would you choose? Or maybe I’ll come up with my own pattern…

Later edit: I did come up with my own pattern! Check out my Free Crysalis Cardigan Knitting Pattern!
