Mittens to Make

What is it they say? “Cold hands, warm heart”? I think that might have been made up just be to make the cold- handed among us feel better for having ice-cold hands! It is unpleasant and my heart does not feel very warm with my cold hands! But there is a solution! Mittens!!! So, if you or someone you love has notoriously cold hands, you can knit or crochet them up a pair of one of these incredible pairs of mittens to make their hands match the temperature of their heart* (*no guarantees on exact temperature increases!). Check out some of these lovely mitten patterns to make!

I’ve started out with a bunch of crochet patterns here for you. But I’ve carefully selected patterns that aren’t hole-y! Crocheted items are often holey and therefore not as warm as one would like them, but that should not be a problem with these crochet patterns! This One Night Mittens Crochet Pattern from Cool Knitters is a great beginner/intermediate pattern made with bulky-weight yarn and a 5.00 mm hook, so it works up in one night! You can have warm hands for your walk tomorrow!

UPDATE: Unfortunately, this pattern is no longer available on Etsy, so if you love Etsy, here are some other Crochet Mitten Patterns for you to check out.

If you have not made anything with LionBrand’s Go For Faux, you need to try out this fuzzy and cozy yarn! While it is a bit of a challenge to crochet with as you have to crochet by feeling more than by seeing, the result is so luxurious and warm that it is worth the patience needed! These Crochet Faux Fur Mittens & Headband Patterns from All About Ami include some great instructions for this in the pattern and also the pattern is available for free on her blog! You can also purchase a kit from LionBrand Yarn which includes all the yarn and the pattern to make this cute set!

The Remy Mittens Crochet Pattern is an easy crochet pattern from Ruby Webbs that comes in 4 sizes, so you can make matching mittens for the whole family! I love the stitch pattern on these lovely mittens which use worsted weight yarn, which means that you should be able to find a suitable yarn in your local big box store or your local yarn store with ease.

The 3 Hour Chunky Crochet Mittens Pattern from Make And Do Crew is crocheted with what is called the knit stitch or the waistcoat stitch. It basically just puts a single crochet stitch in a different spot. Check out this YouTube tutorial from Mama in a Stitch for a video on how to make this stitch. It’s a lovely stitch that is excellent for closing up the holes that we regularly find in single crochet, so well-worth learning!

The Noelle Knitted Look Mittens Crochet Pattern from Hooked On Tilly uses a different stitch (Half-double crochet in the third loop) which creates a horizontal knit-look stitch and also creates a tight fabric. Doesn’t it look so lovely in that faded yarn?

Ok, time for the knitting patterns! The Easy Knit Mittens Knitting Pattern from Darling Jadore is made with the classic garter stitch which makes a nice thick warm fabric for your mittens. It does involve double-pointed needles (which aren’t that hard to use, really!), so while this is a pretty easy pattern, it is classified as an intermediate pattern, but you can do this! Learn a new skill! There are so many people on YouTube or the internet in general who want to teach you how to do things! Or get yourself a Craftsy subscription! Anytime I want to improve a technique or if I don’t know how to do something, I search Craftsy and there’s always a great tutorial for how to do it!

The Grove Mittens Cable Knit Mittens Knitting Pattern also from Darling Jadore is another great classic knitting pattern for gorgeous cable knit mittens! I love the large woven-like cable which flows down the centre and is delicately flanked by two smaller rope-like cables against a backdrop of delicate stockinette stitches! This is a classic must-have staple that would make an excellent handmade gift or the perfect addition to your winter outerwear wardrobe!

I know I’ve shared The Helix Mittens Knitting Pattern from Lee And Evelyn before, but it’s just such a fun and simple knitting pattern that I can’t help but share it again! The delicate purl stitches spiral around the length of the mitten, which are quick to work up in a bulky (size 5) yarn. This mitten pattern is perfect for adventurous beginners looking for the perfect first pair of handknit mittens!

The Piper Mittens from Yankee Knitter Designs are an easy chunky cable knit mittens pattern made with a single cable down the front. The instruction sare easy to follow and the pattern includes insturction for both double pointed needles and the Magic Loop method (another method worth learning!).

The Mittens My Love Fair Isle Mittens Knitting Pattern from Design by Evvash is a delicate, fair-isle knitting pattern which comes in an impressive 13 sizes! So these are sure to be a pair of mittens that will be a perfect fit for everyone in the family! I love the little hearts that the alternate colours of stranded colourwork produce; so cute!

Speaking of little heats, a pair of thrummed mittens are the perfect combo of cute and warm! The Thrummed Mittens Knitting Pattern from Blue Bird Pine Shop works up quickly with bulky yarn and the pattern is worked in the round for a seamless finish. The thrums create a fuzzy and warm lining, which feels like wearing a stuffy as a mitten and sure to keep your hands toasty all winter long!

If you crochet and are interested in making a pair of thrummed mittens, keep your eyes on All About Ami’s blog or Instagram for her upcoming crocheted thrummed mittens pattern! She has used the waistcoat stitch and these will definitely make a pair of super toasty warm mittens! I can hardly wait for her pattern to be released!

This is the pair of mittens I made this winter. The Sagostad Mittens by Sofiz Kammeborn was a bit of a challenge for me, as I ventured into learning how to improve my fair isle skills (Thanks Craftsy!). I had purchased the Yarn kit for Sadostad Fairy Tale Town Mittens (this kit does not include the pattern; you need to buy that separately on Ravelry) last year and started to make them, but I got a little distracted and discouraged, so I set them aside until this Christmas break when I determined to finish these lovely mittens. I finished them and then I actually added a knit lining, which there is no pattern for, but it was such an interesting challenge that I had to figure out how to do it. The result is just lovely. I shared a few more pictures in this Instagram post with a peek inside the mittens to look at the lining. I’m so impressed that I don’t have to contend with the strands of yarn held behind the colourwork and can just feel the smoothness of the lining. It was pretty much like knitting another pair of mittens, but it was so worth it!

I hope you enjoyed this collection of mittens to make and that you are inspired to grab and pattern and get making today! Your hands will thank you!

Make an adorable pair of mittens with the great collection of knit and crochet mitten patterns. Ranging from beginner to advanced mitten patterns, these mittens are sure to delight and keep your hands warm this winter!

Warm Winter Weather Wear

Warm Winter Wear

Well, the winter weather has arrived, at least where I live. It’s not too bad just yet, so don’t mistake my announcement for complaining. But it is definitely time to break out the knit and crochet accessories to keep ears, necks, heads and hands warm this season. If you’re looking for a pattern to make for a gift to give this season or to keep yourself warm this winter, I’ve got a great collection of fashionable knit and crochet accessory patterns for you!

*Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click on them and buy something, you don’t pay any extra, but I may get a small commission.*

First off, these twisted ear warmers are all the rage this year. Great for keeping your ears warm while not messing up your top knot or ponytail. The River Ear Warmer twisted headband crochet pattern is a great and simple crochet pattern that a beginner could handle. The beauty of these little projects is that they only take a couple of hours and a partial skein of yarn. They make great stash-busting projects!

The Woven Headwarmer crochet pattern has a little more texture and has that lovely bowtie twist to finish it off! Super cute and what a fun pattern to highlight a soft and luscious yarn. If you only have one skein of beautiful and expensive yarn, this is your project. You can make up a few of these with that one gorgeous skein and have gifts for your closest friends!

Buffalo plaid is still super cute and trendy and it’s so super fun to see three colours of yarn come together to form this fun pattern. Don’t you love the large wooden button on this Buffalo Plaid Crochet Cowl Pattern? I love fun finishing touches like that. It makes a piece look so much more professional!

Here’s another gorgeous cowl to try out: the Triangle Scarf Crochet Pattern is a textured granny-stitch style cowl that would be a great welcome back to crochet project for those whose grannies taught them the simple granny square and that’s all they really remember. This would also be a great pattern to highlight some special yarn you’ve been saving.

Check out the fringe on this June Berry Cowl crochet pattern… with buttons as well! I love the gorgeous texture on this cowl pattern and fringe is so on-trend right now. It’s a great time to get working on this beautiful scarf, for you or for a friend!

If you’ve always wanted to try cables, the Cascades Big Knit Scarf Pattern is a great first cable project. With bulky yarn and just one big braid cable through the scarf, it’s a great project to practice and learn. Just a tip: if you’re just learning, using a light coloured yarn will help you to more easily see your work and make it easier to fix any mistakes.

If you have a little more experience knitting, you might like to try knitting yourself this Chunky Mittens Knitting Pattern to keep your fingers warm this winter. These chunky mittens look so warm and cozy! My fingerless mittens just aren’t cutting it anymore; I’m going to need to get me some tips!

Ooooh! Or here’s another cute mittens pattern! The Bit of Honey Mittens Knitting Pattern has a sweet honeycomb textured stitch pattern that is subtle and gorgeous! This is a great project to spend a little more time and care with, but has a great finished result!

Update: It looks like this pattern is sold out right now, but the Honey Mitts Knitting Pattern is another pattern that is very close!

Don’t worry: I haven’t left the crocheters’ hands out in the cold. The Cadence Mittens crochet mitten pattern is a lovely textured crochet mitten pattern with a cable-like textured stitch to practice something new for crocheters looking for a little more of a challenge.

Now, THIS is a fun hat pattern! I love seeing the animal print that is making its way into knitwear! Check out this super fun Animal Attraction Leopard Print Pompom Hat knitting pattern! What a fun winter accessory!

And back to plaid. This one is a knitting pattern, though, and only made with 2 colours of yarn. The Super Bulky Buffalo Plaid Hat knitting pattern is a quick knit made with super bulky yarn; don’t you just love it with a big faux fur pom on top?

And while not exactly a wearable accessory, this Textured Christmas Crochet Stocking Pattern is a great project to get working on this time of year. It would make a lovely gift for a friend or loved one! Don’t you just love the beautiful bobble stripes? I love the natural coloured yarn used here, but I think any solid colour would look delightful in this pattern!

So there’s this week’s collection of fabulous patterns to knit and crochet. Making them and wearing them will keep you warm all season! Pick up a pattern today and find some yummy yarns to make one of these patterns. Or pin it for later!

Patterns to Warm Up With

Are you experiencing a polar vortex where you are? It’s still very cold here. I mean, it’s Canada. It’s the middle of winter, but still. I’m done with this weather. But it, apparently, is not done with us. Fortunately, I have a degree in yarn crafts, with an internet minor. So, we can solve this. Even if I had a degree in meteorology, I wouldn’t be able to change the weather, but with my fictitious degree in yarn crafts, I can change how I (and others) experience it. #takethatscience

First off, I’d like to introduce you to The Frost Beanie, designed by my friend Alicia from Lee & Evelyn (you’re my friend now, Alicia). I test-knit this little beauty of a beginner toque (Canadian for winter hat/beanie) for Alicia and it’s a lovely pattern, with great instructions for a seamless colour-change and it has been just re-released in sizes newborn to adult male! So, if you already purchased this adorable hat, you’ll get an update sent to you. If not, now you can get sizes for everyone! It knits up very quickly in a super bulky size yarn. I knitted up a couple of the kid sizes in a day!

The Frost Beanie in all sizes! Knit by @craftevangelist

I knit these beauties up in The Wool by We Are Knitters, but I would recommend experimenting with the more fitted versions she suggests. The thickness of the The Wool just doesn’t have the drape that other yarns do, but it’s sooo lovely and soft and the colours are to die for!

As it turns out, there are other results on Etsy when you search “Frost Beanie” including this sweet crochet pattern by Jennifer White Designs. These textured crochet patterns (especially with buttons) are so adorable and trendy. Pick one up and get crocheting: they’re so cute!

Of course, if it’s cold outside, you’re going to need something to keep your fingers warm and these Frost Lined Mittens are just the thing. The outer mitten is worked first, then stitches are picked up around the inside of the cuff and the lining is worked in the opposite direction. Once completed, the lining is tucked into the outer mitten. Looks like the perfect pattern to keep warm this polar vortex season.

Sometimes it’s a bit frosty in my office. They’ve tried to tell me it’s not air conditioning, but it’s cold air blowing out of the same vent that the air conditioning comes out of, so… it doesn’t much matter to me. It’s minus bajillion outside and there’s cold air blowing out of a vent in my office #I’llcallitwhateverIwantthanks. But perhaps, a pair of these Frost Fighters might help?

Back to hat patterns, though. I’m sure we all know that you lose most of your heat from your head, so hats are important. Check out this beautiful textured Winter Frost Chunky Beanie crochet pattern which is a gorgeous way to stay warm this polar vortex.

You probably underestimate how warm a scarf can keep you. But warm up your neck with this Frost infinity cowl and see how toasty you will be! You can drape it over your head to keep your head warm, too and keep the wind from your neck! With this beautiful textured knit pattern, it would make a lovely gift for a loved one, too!

Stay warm friends. Get making and keep yourself and your loved ones warm this polar vortex. If it’s above freezing where you are, just keep it to yourselves. The rest of us don’t need that in our lives. What can we do about it besides knit and never leave the warmth of our electric blankets?

Marvellous Mittens

I posted a round up of fingerless gloves I was choosing between a few weeks ago when I was complaining of my freezing fingers in my office.  I did make a pair, but now we’re onto full-on winter in these parts, so you need mittens whenever you venture out of the house. Which pair should I make next? There are so many lovely knit and crochet patterns to make. Which do you like? (They also make great gifts, especially chunky crocheted mittens: they work up super quickly!

I’m a big fan of these chunky knit Cabled Hat and Mittens Pattern. Bonus hat pattern! Right? So classic and perfect for showing off a lovely yarn!

The Helix Mittens knitting pattern is another great knit mitten pattern. Look at the fun swirl in these lovely mittens!

The Jesse Mittens crochet pattern has a nice texture with a contrasting cuff, they set off any winter outfit. This same designer also has a hat pattern that matches!

Cabled Mittens Crochet Pattern by All About Ami (fellow Edmontonian!) are a cute mitten with a cable knit pattern for crocheters. I think the cable-knit look is what a lot of crocheters are kind of envious of knitters for. You can learn both! I learned to knit after I learned to crochet, so I knit continental and it feels so much more natural than the English method to me.

Frosty Forest Mittens crochet pattern are another chunky crochet mitten pattern that look toasty warm and would crochet up quickly for a last minute gift!

One day I want to make some of these ultra warm Alpaca Thrum Mittens! All that roving inside makes them super warm and cozy and the little puffy heart stitch on the outside is adorable!

I’m a huge fan of simple knitting patterns, so I love these Frisco Mittens, which are another pattern that would highlight and show off a beautiful yarn! Sometimes you save that lovely stuff for just the right project. These cozy mittens look just right for that.

Keep your fingers busy and then warm with one of these lovely pair of mittens! Pick up a pattern today! Or pin it for tomorrow!
