Yesterday was a perfect summer day in Edmonton. A perfect day to spend outdoors in the garden! It was super calm and sunny, hardly any mosquitoes. I finally got to replacing the wood chips around my garden, which pretty much took the entire (work) day. It feels good to have that done and it was glorious to spend the day outside since I’ve been spending so many of my days indoors due to the rain, as well as working and working on our house! After I had finished working and took a lovely bath, I spent part of the evening sitting on our deck, enjoying a drink, some chill music and some knitting. So, I decided to collect a bunch of patterns for you to consider making this summer, for chill evenings on the deck, and relaxing mornings with a coffee.

Last night, I was actually working on this cute little Pin Me Up Headband from Knitatude. This is one of her patterns that are free on her blog; it’s a pretty quick knit (though not as quick if you modify it to use sock-weight yarn, like I did-haha) and uses up smaller bits of yarn, which I love!

Chantal has also just released her new Tulip Wrap Tank Knitting Pattern which is an intermediate knit wrap tank top pattern that is written in 9 sizes (up to 5 XL)! I’m so pleased to see pattern designers include more sizes in their patterns. All bodies deserve cute hand-knit items; I’m so proud of the efforts that Chantal and other designers have made to increase their size offerings and make hand-knit patterns more accessible to more people. Get the pattern here.

I just love the simple refined look of this Ribbed V-neck cropped tank top knitting pattern. The delicate ribbing makes this easy/intermediate pattern look more difficult than it is. Made with a fingering weight yarn, it will be perfect to wear in the warmer summer months. This is also a size-inclusive pattern including up to 5XL! Get the pattern here.

For an even easier pattern, this Basic Bralette Knitting Pattern is rated “Easy peasy.” Love that. Super cute and quick knit made with a worsted weight yarn, it knits up quickly into a cute and sexy little bralette. Get the pattern here.

For a summer knit tank top that is more work-appropriate, but just as easy of a knit, check out this Silver Spring Knit Tank Top Pattern. You could easily wear this to the office (if that’s where you’re allowed to go these days) or throw a denim or leather jacket on it for a night out! Using worsted weight yarn, this pattern is also size-inclusive in 9 sizes all the way up to 5XL! This is a beginner level pattern and if you check out her Etsy listing, she has included a way to get the pattern for free on her blog. A printable pdf is so handy though, so for just a few bucks and to support this creative designer, get the pattern here.

Another Easy Peasy Tank Top Knitting Pattern! This sexy, relaxed knitting pattern is available in 5 sizes, up to 47-inch chest circumference. Perfect for the beach or just relaxing in the back yard, this intermediate pattern is quick and easy and uses baby cotton for a lovely soft and cool drape. Get the pattern here.

Of course, summer knits don’t have to just be tank tops! You can make yourself a skirt! This Marigold Skirt Knitting Pattern is even appropriate for the office! How cute is this?! This simple pattern uses your personal measurements so that you could make one for yourself and all your friends and everyone would get one just the perfect size for them! Get the pattern here.

For a skirt with a little more swing, The Flirt Skirt Knitting Pattern has a bit more flounce to it. This skirt pattern makes a high-waisted A-line skirt with an elastic waistband. This pattern is also size-inclusive, including 15 sizes, from a 22-inch waist to a 60-inch waist! Any size can wear this cute and flirty skirt! Get the pattern here.

Of course, you can always dress yourself head to toe in summer knits with this Beverly Knit Top and Skirt Set Pattern. This cropped knit tee and high-waisted mini-skirt is a fun and flirty coordinated outfit which features a faux cable ribbing and sleek stockinette stitch. This is a beginner-intermediate pattern available in three sizes (small, medium and large). Get the pattern here.

I know this collection of patterns has mostly been for grown women, but I couldn’t resist including this adorable Baby Bloomers with Skirt Knitting Pattern! How sweet would this be on a new little one this summer? The confident beginner can tackle this pattern as it uses just the basic techniques of casting on, knitting, purling, and binding off. Make these bloomers in 4 different sizes, from 3-6 months all the way up to 2 years with or without the adorable skirt! Get the pattern here.

I certainly wouldn’t want to forget the crocheters out there. You can easily make up this Field Trip Crochet Halter Top Pattern in an afternoon on the deck and have a cute little cropped top for festivals or the beach. While this cute top is written in one small/medium (A/B cup) size, it can easily be modified to fit larger or smaller sizes. Get the pattern here.

You can also crochet up a classy tank top using this Finesse tank top crochet pattern. An intermediate level crochet pattern, this tank top is pattern is written in 5 sizes and uses fingering-weight sock yarn for a delicate drape. Get the pattern here.

If you’re looking for a quick top project for summer, check out this Crochet Pattern for Summer Roadtrip Top. With an open, lacy stitch, this top crochets up quickly and is the perfect project to bring on a road trip or the perfect garment to travel with! This is a great project for beginners and works up quickly! Get the pattern here.

Patterns for Black History Month
I know I missed it by a week, but February is Black History Month, but my life getting in the way is not going to stop me from posting this late. I am not black, but I think it’s important to learn about the history of other people, especially marginalized peoples. Also, there’s been some tension in the “fiber community” (is that a thing? yes, apparently it is) around race lately and I’ve been convicted that if I don’t stand up against racism, my silence and my privilege allows the status quo to continue and the bullies to win. I want to thank Tyne Swedish for giving so much of her time to raise awareness about these issues and stand with the oppressed and stand against racism and oppression. Follow her Instagram account and buy her a coffee if you can!
I’m super sad that people of colour have been made to feel unwelcome in spaces for knitters and crocheters, so today I would like to highlight some patterns by black designers. It’s a small gesture, I know; but it’s what I do, so taking some time to highlight some POC designers seemed like something I could do. Go support some of these great designers by buying a pattern today and sharing it on social media (tag the designer) when you’re done!

First up is Toni Lipsey of

Another lovely (but not exactly perfect for a Canadian winter) pattern from TLYarnCrafts is this Lemonade Top Pattern. I love the open lacy back and it looks like it would make a great beach cover-up.

More appropriate for winter, Toni also has several gorgeous shawls including this recent one in Tunisian crochet, the Ada Shawl. I’ve never crocheted anything in Tunisian crochet, though my mother in law did show me how to do it and I crocheted a row for her, so I kinda know how. I like the way it looks. I should really give it a go… maybe with this pattern. I don’t usually wear shawls, but I do wear a lot of scarves, so I think this looks like I could wear it the same way I would a scarf.

Third Vault Yarns is a lovely designer based in the UK and I quite like these Burn the Capitol Fingerless Gloves. They were designed as a tribute to the Hunger Games for the Third Vault Hunger Games Yarn Club (which sounds awesome, by the way). Super cool and I love these fall

Sol the Summer Doll
After writing up that top 10 summer Etsy picks post, I still found more adorable things to crochet for summer!!! I know it’s August and summer posts are usually written early when everyone’s excited and people are already talking pumpkin spice, but I’m still solidly in summer mode (sort of… ripping apart a bathroom and putting a new plumbing stack in is totally summer mode, right?). I still have a trip ahead of me too, so it’s not a bad idea to have a quick little project to keep my fingers busy while we travel.
