My husband has put in a request for a sweater. He doesn’t do this a lot, even though he does love clothes and fashion. He knows that most commercially available sweaters are far more affordable to buy than to have me make. The cardigan he has requested is pictured below. It’s a cashmere cardigan, which means that it is pretty pricey from the store (but still probably less expensive than I could make it for if I were to use cashmere yarn). But it is nice to have something special and handmade and I can adjust it so it fits him the way he wants. And I get the fun (fun?) of figuring out a new pattern. It doesn’t look overly complicated, other than sorting out the collar/opening, but it just occurred to me this morning that the last cardigan I made for myself is a pretty similar construction, so I might begin with that as a starting point.

If you don’t have a wife/partner who will devote hours of their life to knitting a cardigan for you with out a pattern, you can buy one of these here. Or if you don’t want to try to figure out your own pattern to make your beloved a beautiful handmade cardigan, check out some of these patterns for some great options.
You could try the Easy Men’s Hooded Jacket from Vintage Pattern Faves. I think the first sweater I ever knit had a hood, but it was a 3-month old size, for my firstborn. I can’t remember if I kept it (shame if I didn’t). It was yellow with cute red ladybug buttons. It took way less time than a long hooded cardigan like this one would take, but I really love the relaxed style of this cardigan.
This Willem Cardigan Crochet Pattern from Home of the Hook also has a hood! Hooded cardigans for every kind of fibre artist! I would put some pockets on this bad boy (because everyone needs more pockets!), but this one is also pretty cool as is.
The Gear Cardigan Knitting Pattern from Vi Talina Craft is a pattern I considered basing my husband’s cardigan off of. It has a really different collar though, and I think that’s the tricky part. I do love the texture on this cardigan. How do we feel about no buttons on this guy? And also, dammit, where are the pockets?!
The Men’s Easy Knit Cardigan Knitting Pattern from Hobo Hooks gets a pass on no pockets because it’s not a big chunky cardigan. It looks like it would be a relatively quick knit and has a timeless style that I think any guy would appreciate.
Ok, back to crochet. I’m not sure how I feel about this Men’s Crochet Double Fronted Cardigan from Seyhall Crochet Design… it’s not totally my jam, but I do appreciate the wide shawl collar and I love the textural elements. If you’re a crocheter looking for a double-breasted (or double-fronted? What’s up with that?) cardigan sweater pattern for your beau, this is just the thing!
Here’s a gender-neutral cardigan for you. If you need some motivation to make a cardigan for your man, perhaps you can motivate yourself by imagining yourself borrowing it? The Field Day Jacket Knit Cardigan Sweater Pattern from Ozetta is the perfect sweater to borrow for a cozy night in or a stylish walk to the coffee shop.
This Vintage Men’s Cabled Cardigan Knitting Pattern from Hobo Hooks has subtle cables down the sleeves and button band and your man will look just as dapper as this dude wearing this cardigan with integrated pockets that are so nice this guy doesn’t even want to put his hands in them!
Ok, I know we’ve veered away from the cardigan here, but I was perusing looking at all the men’s sweater options in order to find something I might be able to modify. The Men’s Ribbed Sweater Knitting Pattern from Knit a Pattern is a beautiful ribbed knit sweater pattern that is another timeless classic if you are looking for one.
If you’re looking to get started with something simpler, the Men’s Easy Beginner Sweater Pullover Knitting Pattern from Vintage Pattern Faves is another stylish and timeless knit sweater pattern for you to check out. It is made with chunky yarn, so it works up quickly and you’ll be borrowing this sweater from your man in no time!
Ok, now here we are with the ladies. Sorry. I think the Meara Fisherman Cable Sweater Crochet Pattern from Hopeful Honey Designs is a gender-neutral cable sweater pattern that anyone could wear. It’s another classic. And did you see??? It’s CROCHET. Crocheted cables. So awesome… and cozy!
When I saw this Men’s Striped Raglan Pullover Sweater Knitting Pattern from Hobo Hooks, it reminded me of the colours of the cardigan that my husband wants. And honestly, I’m not finding exactly what I’m looking for so far, which is a little disappointing. I hope I can find a nice yarn in the colours he wants! Colour blocking is still pretty in right now, so this throwback vintage pattern is right on trend. So pick it up and get making today!
I hope you found a men’s cardigan or sweater pattern here to make for the man in your life (or yourself!). Grab a pattern and some yarn and get making today. Or pin it for later!
It has been quite a hot summer here in Edmonton this year. We only had our first real rainy day last week! We’ve had more 30+ degree (Celcius… 86 F for our American friends) days than any summer on record. I wish I were at a lake or in a pool floating on an inflatable for some of those days instead of renovating my house, but here we are and the only way out is through! Anyway, the slight dip in temperature and a release from one of my favourite pattern designers got me thinking about sweaters, so here’s small collection of stylish patterns to get you started in working on making a sweater in time for the temperatures to turn a little cooler.

The Cable Crush Hoodie is the new release from Knitatude was the pattern that I just had to snap up and got me inspired to create this pattern round up. This is a cropped, hooded, batwing sweater that ist just so much fun. The hood has a rounded tip, instead of a point and the sleeves taper down to a lovely fit at the wrists. I can’t wait to make this fun sweater!
I’ve been following Sewrella on Instagram and she recently came out with her Folklore collection, inspired by Taylor Swifts Folklore album. One of the options was a kit for the Folklore Cardigan, which LionBrand is also offering as a kit. The pattern itself is free (just scroll down on the kit page and there’s a button to download the pattern), but you can get all the yarn you need in a handy kit from LionBrand, which is always helpful. Watch for a sale and you can always get a good deal on sweater-quantity yarn from LionBrand!
The Dem Bones Sweater Knitting Pattern from Eileen Casey Creations is such a cute and fun knitting pattern, perfect for Halloween. I wish this came in my size; I think it would be so fun. But remembering back to the time when I had fussy toddlers who didn’t want to wear costumes, I think I might have been able to get them into this sweater, which would have been their whole costume. As teenagers now, they would probably even wear it day to day (I really have no idea–I’m often wrong about these things).
Well, that’s all the sweater patterns I have time to wrangle up for you today. I hope you found one that inspires you to get making as the weather turns cool again and we seek to warm up indoors. When I’m happily sitting in my new cozy living room, I’ll be picking up that Cable Crush Hoodie pattern to lounge around in this winter. Grab a pattern today or pin it for later!
We have had a very mild winter here so far in Edmonton! It’s been so gorgeous and great to be out walking. And since that’s the only place I really go, the weather has been remarkably cooperative for long walks in the river valley and short ones around the neighbourhood. But I heard on the news that there’s some kind of polar vortex coming our way, which sounds really ominous, but to most Canadians, it really just means “winter.” Ooooohhh it’s going to get really cold and snowy in January and February? Sounds seasonal. Sounds normal. But it also sounds like you’re going to want a big cozy oversized sweater! I’ve found a great collection of oversized cozy sweaters for you to knit to stay warm and cozy during any polar vortext or “winter” or whatever you want to call it. Check out these stylish and cozy oversized sweater patterns and get knitting today for warmth tomorrow!

While this Go With the Flow Cropped Wool Sweater knitting pattern from HappyLoveCo is knit with bulky yarn and oversized sleeves, it’s cropped, so it’s not quite as warm as others, but it’s definitely stylish and cropped sweaters are super fun and quick to knit.
The more I looked at oversized sweaters, the more I found from HappyLoveCo, like this The Zoey Cardigan knitting pattern. There are a bunch more, so I’ve grouped them all together here. This oversized cardigan is perfect for throwing over a t-shirt or a tank top and lounging around the house. I love its relaxed feel and the speckled yarn choice here is spot on! I love the ridged seed stitch pattern chosen which adds lovely texture and interest, so even if you chose a solid yarn, there would still be plenty of interest in this summer cardigan!

So, go ahead and get knitting. Grab one of these great patterns today and pick up some yarn or pin it for later!
As you welcome fall this year, it’s a great time to embrace sweater weather! Fall in Edmonton (where I live) is usually a pretty short season. Winter likes to extend its reach well into the fall months, so it’s not uncommon for us to have snow by Thanksgiving or Halloween. But this year, the weather has been holding so far and the forecast is looking good for the next couple of weeks. I have been taking advantage of the lovely temperatures to enjoy walks in our beautiful river valley. Wearing sweaters is a great way to enjoy the outdoor weather longer. And a great way to keep your hands busy as you cuddle up in front of the fire or the TV. Check out some of these great knit and crochet sweater patterns, perfect to make for fall!

Sweaters and other garments benefit from wet blocking, which is a process of washing or steaming the garment (or garment pieces before assembly) and gently stretching or positioning it to the proper measurements, pinning it to a blocking mat and allowing it to dry. While technically “spring is here,” it is currently snowing here in Edmonton. While it’s not unusual for it to snow here this time of year, it is getting a little wearisome. I quite love springtime when it’s cooperating, though. I love the longer days, the warmer weather, the grass emerging and turning green from under its cover of winter snow. I love planting things and getting outside again. I can hardly wait for those things! But while it still snows here, I may as well think about the indoor activities of knitting and crocheting while I look forward to what I will wear in the coming warmer months ahead. Will you join me? Here’s a collection of 10 spring sweater patterns for you to choose from to make while we anticipate soon being about to wear them outside!

It’s a great time to #StandWithSmall so check out these great patterns below and support a designer with a small purchase from Etsy. I love promoting Etsy patterns for this reason! I know many of the designers are moms and side hustlers trying to eek out a bit of a living from their creative work. For more great unique and handmade items from small indie businesses, check out the editor’s picks here. It’s a tough time for a lot of people right now, so if you’re able to throw some support to small businesses, it means so much to us!
While not technically a sweater, this Crochet Ratchet-Up Ruana Wrap Pattern is a perfect option for spring! Throw it over your shoulders in a chilly office, or wear it as an open breezy accessory for spring walks. This easy pattern would work up quickly with a lacy crochet stitch and would be suitable for a confident beginner. It’s worked up all in one continuous piece, so no seaming! I love the tassels on the end of this piece! This is definitely a contender for a spring make for me!
I just love this Calla Lily Cardigan Crochet Pattern from All About Ami. This beautiful and romantic cardigan can be worn two ways and if you make it in the recommended Cotton Bamboo yarn, you will love the drape and feel of this garment!

Stephanie’s patterns are always easy to follow and great for beginner knitters!
This Painted Sky Shrug Beginner Knitting Pattern is another easy knitting pattern that works well with a hand-dyed yarn. This vintage Women’s Loose Fit Top Knitting Pattern is an 80’s knitting pattern, but I think it could totally pass for a trendy garment right now if you’d just calm your hair down (haha!). The lovely thing about vintage patterns that you can get on Etsy now is that they’re in pdf format, but they’re also really inexpensive: this cute pattern is just a couple of bucks!
Knitatude has a bunch of cute knitting patterns to check out, including this great Striped Down Cardi Knitting Pattern. Recommended for an advanced beginner, this light cotton cardigan pattern comes in sizes small to extra large. There’s something about the bobble sleeves of this Indy Cardigan Crochet Pattern that just has me completely enamored. I think I should make one of these fun button down cardigans! The Uptown Cardigan from All About Ami is probably one of my favourites; this was my late summer/early fall cardigan project. It’s a super simple knit and if there was a pattern rating system, I would put this one in the category of “Easy to knit while watching Netflix.” It’s lovely working with the delicate Coboo yarn from Lion Brand. It’s a worsted weight yarn that is sooooooo soft and has a lovely drape. It’s totally worth ordering the kit from Lion Brand, especially if you can get a good 40% off kits deal that Lion Brand is offering right now with the code 40KITS!
Stephanie also recently created this simple Rosewood Cardigan Crochet Pattern, also made with Coboo yarn. It’s similarly styled to the knit version, but for crocheters! This is also offered as a kit from Lion Brand and with 40% off right now, it’s a great time to pick it up!
This chunky cable-knit Braid Cardigan looks like it would work up really quickly with the chunky yarn and mostly garter stitch. And how cozy does it look? I love the cable braid detail.
Do you love the seed stitch? I love the look of it and as a continental knitter, switching between knitting and purling is pretty quick for me. The Autumn Sweater is another easy-level knitting pattern, worked up with chunky yarn, so it would come together quickly. It looks so warm!
Chantal from Knitatude has released this lovely cable knit chunky sweater as well. The Cable Crush Coat is knit with super bulky We Art Knitters The Wool (use my code: MGMKTKWSM to get $12 off!).
The Nina Cardigan is a crochet pattern for a long oversized cardigan with pockets. Pockets! We all love pockets! So you can make yourself a beautiful long cardigan whether you knit or crochet! This pattern is crocheted top-down, which is an excellent construction to work with for a sweater, so there are no surprises about how long it is because you can try it on as you go!
The Telavi Crocheted Cardigan Pattern has a lovely open lace stitch pattern, making a beautiful addition to your wardrobe, blending light and airy with soft and cozy.
So, are you ready for sweater weather? Which of these gorgeous patterns are you hoping to work up this season? Grab a pattern today or pin it for later!
Now that Christmas is over, it’s time to start dreaming of selfish projects! Winter is such a great time to cozy up with some yarn and a more involved project to make for yourself! I think it’s a great year to make a sweater for myself, don’t you? Check out some of these lovely sweater patterns and choose one to make for yourself (or as ANOTHER gift, I guess, you generous maker, you).

While this model may be sporting a pair of cutoffs with this sweater, I think this Clarke Pullover pattern would make a great all season sweater. Cute and comfy for summer evenings or winter weekends. I love stripes, so this pullover is just my style! Definitely a contender!
I love the stylish simplicity of this Drift Cable Knit Raglan Sweater Pattern. I love this grey wool and that it is knit seamlessly in the round from top down. If you’ve never knit top-down before, it is the cat’s meow! Why? You can be sure it’s the right length! No more too short or too long pullovers! Hold it up to yourself as you go and ensure the length is to your preference. Also, seamless! No seams means extra comfort, and no sewing afterward!
Update: Unfortunately this pattern is no longer available. Check out these other cable knit sweater patterns to try out.
This Christmas, I found myself looking for a festive sweater to wear to holiday events. We don’t usually attend very fancy Christmas parties, so a nice sweater will almost always suffice. I had a hard time finding just what I wanted, so I might just have to make something that will work for me. This Icelandic snowflake yoke sweater pattern is sweet and winter-y without being overly Christmassy, which is nice because then you can wear it all season instead of just at festive events.
Perhaps a cardigan is more you thing. A couple years ago, I knit myself a similar cardigan to this Greystone Cardigan (but mine doesn’t have POCKETS like this one does!!!) during Lent while I gave up Facebook. It was so lovely to get something so lovely made instead of just staring at a screen. I’m a little embarrassed to say that I didn’t give up Facebook permanently from that time, but recently I’ve pulled back my time spent there and my time spent on my phone overall, which I’m happy with. So, if you are trying to wean yourself off screens a little bit more, perhaps you should pick up your knitting again!
I’m a big fan of very simple and classic patterns, so this Easy Raglan Sweater Pattern with Video Tutorial is a great beginner project, but also a beautiful way to show off a favourite yarn and knock the execution out of the park to make a really professional looking final product.
But back to stripes. Here’s another striped pattern paired with a casual pair of cutoffs. I love this Sea Breeze Sweater Knitting Pattern by All About Ami. Again, I think this sweater would make a lovely all season sweater, perfect for both winter and summer! And STRIPES!
Which sweater do you like? Are you planning a more involved project for this winter? I loved my Lenton knitting project from 2016; knitting is a great time for reflection and meditation, keeping your hands busy and your mind in and out of focus on the pattern and your thoughts. Lovely. Pin this so you don’t forget about these lovely projects later!
Cozy or cosy? Whichever way you spell it, it spells warm! I’m having a tough time adjusting to the change in temperature this year (especially in my office where someone is randomly turning on the AC!), so I’ve been looking for a cardigan I can keep at my desk to deal with the fluctuating temperatures and stay toasty while I work! I’ve collected a few patterns that I like here. These cocoon cardigans have been very popular and they look super warm. What do you think? Which one will you put on your needles/hook?

Then there this Oversized Scoop Sweater knitting pattern from bromefields. It looks like a super easy knitting pattern that I could make while I watch tv. That’s the beauty of knitting… if it’s an easy enough pattern, you don’t even have to look at it for a good chunk of the time. I once knit a scarf for my brother in law while I read a book!
If you are relatively new to crochet and all you remember is a granny square that your granny taught you, you could try this Granny Cocoon Shrug crochet pattern by Rove Handmade. This might be too “airy” for my needs though. But it’s super stylish and straight-forward if you’re looking for a nice accessory.
This easy knitting pattern for a cocoon cardigan from Knitty Sunny looks like it would also be an easy knit. One of my favourite things about easy knitting patterns is that when you are an intermediate or advanced knitter, these projects look SOOO good. Sometimes I stretch myself by knitting something complicated. Sometimes I knock it out of the park and knit something easy that looks incredible.
This beautiful cable-knit Silver Cocoon knitting pattern from Bummbul looks cozy and lovely as well. Tell me, which one would you choose? Or maybe I’ll come up with my own pattern…
