Delightful Knit & Crocheted Christmas Amigurumi Patterns

As we become further and further buried under snow here in Edmonton, there is an extreme pull to sit under blankets and cuddle up with a blanket and a project. They are relatively quick to make, they often allow you to use up yarn you already have in your stash and it’s just so fun to see the character of them come alive as you work! Crochet Patterns are Among Us

If you have kids that are the same age as my kids (10-15), you have heard of Among Us. A few weeks ago, we got Mr Evangelist a new phone and our youngest got a hand-me-down phone that was new enough to be able to download Among Us and he was pretty happy about that. Conversations overheard with the three of them talking about it is a little weird since they’re talking about being the imposter and killing people. … uh yeah, this is fine, right? Anyway, they’re all the rage right now and I think every kid is going to want their own Among Us character for Christmas. So I collected some Among Us inspired crochet patterns for you here to make your own fun gifts for some kids that you love.

So, this is the basic character, a crewmate… and a dead crewmate. Let’s not dwell too much on their anatomy, shall we? You can use this Among Us Crewmate and Corpse Crochet pattern from Frannito Crafting to make these two characters and any Among Us loving kid is sure to recognize them and enjoy them. The fun is that the crewmates are all kinds of colours, so you can use whatever your kid likes and any yarn you have on hand!

I’m not really sure what the ghost does, but every time I talk to my kids about this, their answers are always really basic, so like, I bed the ghost just like haunts things or moves things around… and it’s the ghost of a murdered crewmate…

Crocheted Creatures

As the weather warms and we venture outside more, the desire to sit under heavy sweaters and blankets passes and at the end of a day of gardening or spending time outside or renovating your bathroom (true story), sitting on the deck with a cold drink and a crochet hook to make some little stuffed creatures is just the sort of craft to keep your fingers busy in the evening. Amigurumi is a Japanese word for small stuffed, crocheted creatures. In its most limited meaning of the word, they are anthropomorphic and crocheted: think little cupcakes with faces. But in the more broad sense, it applies to knit and crocheted creatures, including dolls and stuffed animals. And I’ve had forest creatures on my mind today as I was sharing a story how we dealt with bears at camp with my youngest son this morning. So I’ve collected a bunch of adorable crocheted creature patterns for you to choose from to keep yourself busy this spring.

So naturally, since it was bears that inspired this pattern round up, the first amigurumi creature I have for you is this 3-in-1 Teddy Bear Crochet Pattern. The 3-in-1 part means that there are also 2 other options included in this pattern: options to change the pattern in order to make a bunny and a cat. So cute! And this fuzzy plush yarn works up quickly and makes a super soft and cuddly toy any child will love! (Also: yellow bear! So cute!)

While bears are an obvious choice for a handmade stuffed toy, why don’t you try something a little unique, like this Amigurumi Shrew Crochet Pattern? Don’t you love its long snout and little ears? And what shrew is complete without a little sweater? Absolutely adorable. It’s so fun to make and give handmade amigurumi gifts and for the recipients to have a toy made just for them that no one else one just like it.

My exploration into crocheted creatures for you was not limited to just land animals. Hue the Manatee Amigurumi Pattern is an adorable crochet pattern. If you check out the pattern, you’ll see that you don’t just have to make this Manatee in a traditional grey, but you can use a striping yarn or other bright colours to make this sweet, easy to follow pattern in whatever custom colour you choose!

We’re still loving alpacas, right? Alicia the Alpaca Amigurumi Pattern is an adorable, fuzzy crocheted stuffed animal that will make anyone smile, with her colourful, little pannier blanket, she would make a great handmade gift for a loved one.

Do hamsters live in the wild? You know I saw this super cute Hamster Crochet Pattern and thought it also looked like a full-cheeked chipmunk! So adorable and cartoonish, don’t you agree? One of these little guys would be a cute project to work on while camping and to keep in your trailer as a cuddly little trailer guest (who won’t eat through your pantry!).

I thought this Little Hamster Crochet Pattern resembled the pet hamsters that so many kids had or elementary school classes passed around for kids to take home. I was never in a class that had a class pet, so maybe that was just on television or by the time I was a kid they realized how traumatic it was for a creature to be passed around to different children. My eldest did bring home the class fish for a week or something. We thankfully didn’t kill it, but I think fish would probably prefer to stay in one place too.

Another under-represented stuffed animal is the badger. But you can make your own unique stuffed toy with this Bradley the Badger Amigurumi Crochet Pattern. Isn’t he adorable? I love his stripey black mask and his fuzzy coat.

Check out this adorable Leia the Turtle Amigurumi Crochet Pattern. Turtles make such adorable stuffed animals and while many kids seem to want a turtle as a pet, they’re not the easiest pet to keep. This little turtle would be super easy to keep and is just my speed as far as pets go. Her little shell is removable and has a cute little ties to fasten it on

If you like desert animals, check out this 4-in-1 Desert Creatures Amigurumi Patterns. It’s a bundle of patterns from Loopy Pattern and all her pattern bundles are 40% cheaper than buying the patterns separately. If you like a designer and their pattern style, buying a bundle of patterns is a great way to save a little money. And check out those adorable little creatures! This awesome bundle gets you an owl, a chameleon, a meerkat and a fennec (which is an African fox). What a fun and adorable bundle of creatures to make!

Here’s another unique toy to make: this Lemur Amigurumi Crochet Pattern also from Loopy Pattern is so adorable with his long slender striped tail. Lemurs gained a great deal of popularity after the Disney movie Madagascar was released. This sweet little stuffed toy would like to “move it, move it” along with a fun kid friend!

I know sheep are not exactly forest animals, but when I found this Bobble Sheep Amigurumi Crochet Pattern, it made me think of the New Zealand sheep, Shrek who escaped shearing for 6 years. When he was finally found and sheared, his fleece weighed in at more than 60 lbs! This little bobbly stuffed sheep will certainly not weigh 60 lbs, but he will certainly sit contentedly on your bed or couch as a fun conversation piece.

Cuddly Creatures

I’m sure we could all use a little extra comfort right now. A crocheted (or knit!) cuddly creature is the perfect thing to make to get a feeling of accomplishment with only a few hours of work (well, depending on the pattern). Smaller amigurumis (crocheted stuffed toys) can come together in one to three hours. It’s so fun to watch your yarn turn into a cuddly little friend. What better gift to give to your child or grandchild than a handmade stuffed toy for a little bit of extra comfort? Check out these adorable amigurumi patterns to make! One of my favourite amigurumi designers, Manuska, has created this beautiful Maya Angelou Crochet Doll Pattern, celebrating a strong and accomplished woman. What a lovely way to introduce a young woman to this excellent female role model!

Of course, if you’re all about the animals, this Pug Shpuntic Dog Amigurumi Crochet Pattern is a hilarious, cartoony amigurumi pattern that you simply must try! I love all his folds and crazy eyes!

For my knitters, I haven’t forgotten about you! It’s just not as easy to find cute knitted toys. The visibility of increases and decreases in knitting just doesn’t lend itself as well to amigurumi. But these Moss the Sheep Knitting Patterns are an exception! Fluff and Fuzz has quite a few adorable amigurumi knitting patterns, so if you’re not interested in learning crochet, check out the great variety of knitting patterns in the Fluff and Fuzz shop.

This one was another favourite from Fluff & Fuzz, the Berry Bear knitting pattern. In this fuzzy yarn, you can’t tell it’s knit at all! It looks so good! My kids would love one of these adorable scruffy-looking stuffed bears.

I know that some of you may have difficulty getting out to get supplies if you’re either quarantined or social distancing or if stores have temporarily closed in your area. Most online retailers continue to ship and in my city, Michaels is still offering curbside pick up. It’s not quite the same as making a trip into a store and squishing all the yarn, but Knitpicks and Lionbrand Yarn have a wide selection of yarn and other supplies that you can order and have shipped to you if you need some supplies to make these cute amigurumi toys.

Mini Amigurumi

Amigurumi is one of my favourite things to make to give as a gift! It’s so fun to be able to make your own stuffed animals. And the great thing about mini amigurumi is that the projects come together pretty quickly! And my kids love them! While they can be a little bit finicky if you’re working with fine yarn, the stitch count is lower so you can have a small toy made in a few hours or so. If you want a special handmade gift for the love in your life, check out one of these adorable patterns. You still have plenty of time to whip some up for Valentine’s day!

This Shihtzu puppy is absolutely adorable! We don’t have any pets in our house, but my kids love the idea of one. I think they like the stuffed dogs even more, though. Because as much fun as real dogs are to play with, they also do other things that my kids don’t like as much. And frankly, I’m happier with stuffed dogs as well. This little Shihtzu is just our speed. UPDATE: Unfortunately, this cute pattern is no longer available, but there’s another realistic looking Shih tzu crochet pattern here.

If you’re looking for some yarn for this project, check out these cotton yarns from Lion Brand. For mini amigurumi, Bonbons are a good option if you want to get a bunch of colours, but don’t want the expense and leftover yarn of a full-sized skein.

And of course, you have to have a Kitty amigurumi. This sweet little kitty is so adorable and fits in the palm of your hand. One of the best things about an amigurumi kitty is it stays a kitten forever. It’s always cute and it never poops in your garden.

Speaking of gardens, as much as I know that bees are good for my garden, they kind of terrify me a little bit in real life. But not Barry the Bee! This little toy stands just 8 inches tall and has a cute little flower. With bright yellow and black stripes, this little doll is sure to add a pop of colour to any kids room.

Maybe Easter is on your mind. You can get making this Elendan Bunny amigurumi pattern to have an adorable little bunny rabbit for an Easter gift. I love the brushed yarn for the fur, which makes such a realistic-looking stuffed animal!

Amigurumi for Christmas

I just love amigurumi! According to Wikipedia: Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures. The word is a portmanteau of the Japanese words ami, meaning “crocheted or knitted”, and nuigurumi, meaning “stuffed doll”. And this time of year is the perfect time to make some. Amigurumi is perfect for Christmas, as gifts for children, as decorations for your home or tree, as gifts for co-workers. They work up pretty quickly and are really fun to make; you can also use up some of your odds and ends of yarn since they’re usually pretty small and you can customise their colours to whatever you have on hand! So many people are delighted by amigurumi, it makes the perfect whimsical addition to this festive season! Adorable Halloween Amigurumi

Halloween is coming up, so there’s no better time to start making some adorable little not-so-frightening handmade stuffed toys! There are so many fun patterns to make! These would make great decor items to spruce up your house for the spooky season ahead.

First off, check out this adorable bat pattern from the Etsy shop, Manuska. I love the lacy wings on this crocheted bat doll: such a unique feature! And she’s just so sweet worked up in the pink and grey with the little bow on her head! Not like a gross, dusty real bat at all!

Harry Potter Patterns

It’s hard to believe that the first Harry Potter books hit the shelves over 20 years ago! My kids are all Potterheads (well, the last one is just starting the books now, but he will be)! We love Harry Potter! There are so many great Harry Potter inspired craft projects to try. I’ve found some great ones for you today!

Look at this amazing knitting pattern for this sweet Harry Potter doll by TutosDelphine! This pattern is available in both English and French and if you’re not a knitter, this is definitely a beautiful-looking pattern that will inspire you to learn! Gorgeous!

While this pattern is unfortunately no longer available, there are some other similar looking wizard amigurumi patterns available here.

First thing’s first, get yourself sorted into a house! You can crochet this fun sorting hat pattern and figure out if you’re a Hufflepuff, a Gryffindor, a Ravenclaw or a Slytherin. (My daughter and I are Ravenclaws.)

I was so pleased to find a crochet pattern to make a snowy owl like Hedwig! And it’s a vintage pattern, which I think is cool. Honestly, most vintage patterns look a little wonky, IMHO, but I think this pattern looks great and would be perfect to make the Potterhead in your life their very own owl!

Fall Amigurumi

In my last post, I was protesting that it was still summer, but I must admit now that fall is fast approaching. The weather here turned quickly and now I am faced with covering my tomatoes on Monday to deal with nearly freezing temperatures. This shouldn’t be happening already. But you can’t fight the inevitable!

Fall is the perfect time of year to get back into crochet and warm up with a cup of tea under balls and balls of yarn! I have found some beautiful fall amigurumi for you to enjoy, that will warm your heart and help you embrace this new season.

The start of fall means the start of school for us and while I’m sure your kids’ teachers already have plenty of apple paraphernalia, I bet ya they don’t have an amigurumi apple.

I love play food patterns! They make such great toys for kids! This is a beautiful apple pattern that would be a fun twist on an old classic gift for a teacher. And hey, if they don’t have a use for it, they can put it in with the play kitchen at their school!

If you have any fall babies in your life, this little fall reindeer essential oil diffuser toy is so fun! It’s not a pattern, but it’s such a good idea for a little handmade gift for a new baby!

I love how the little mice are poking their heads out of the pumpkin! I know most of my readers are Americans, but we Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving at the beginning of October, so these little guys would be great decor for the upcoming Thanksgiving celebrations!
