Hats are the perfect projects for beginner crocheters to learn this new skill! They only require a small investment of a ball of yarn (a partial ball, really!) and a hook for the most basic pattern. They are small projects that can feed a sense of accomplishment, which is what you really need when you’re learning. Also, if your budget is tight this year, learning to crochet some hats for those on your gift list, is a great way to save some money while still giving awesome gifts. I have compiled a bunch of hat crochet patterns with beginner crocheters in mind.

First up is this Estrela Beanie Crochet Pattern by HookedHazel; it features a delicate, interesting textured stitch, that even a beginner crocheter will pick up quickly! Don’t forget to pick yourself up some lovely (faux… because… animals) fur pompoms to finish off the look!
Another easy crochet hat pattern is this lovely twist bobble stitch crochet hat pattern by HM made Belaurs. I know, maybe you don’t believe me, but you could be making stuff like this if you just have the right pattern! Easy peasy!
Update: Unfortunately this pattern is not available any longer. Check out these other crochet bobble hat patterns!
Here’s another super trendy, yet EASY crochet hat pattern, The Linden Beanie by Cozy Moon Designs. (Can you tell I have a thing for the fur pompoms?)
Once you get confident in your skills you’ll be making awesome stuff likeon this lovely Loretta Hat crochet pattern by Erin Nims. Trust me, you can do this!
But if you’re feeling gun-shy on the textures, The Caysen Crochet Hat Pattern is so easy and made with a chunky yarn, so it will come together super quick and you’ll amaze your friends with your mad crochet skills. And they won’t even know you just learned. Before you know it, people will be telling you to open up an Etsy shop.
If your granny ever tried to teach you the granny square, you have almost all the skills you need to make this adorable hat: The Madison Beanie from Darling Be Brave. It’s completely beginner friendly with step by step photo tutorials.
This sweet little hat “My First Hat” by Whimsy Woolies promises to be your first hat: it is designed with the beginner in mind! And you get to learn to crochet that lovely flower! Bonus! Perfect hat for a lovely little newborn!
Christmas is coming! And especially for crafters: if you’re going to make something for your loved ones’ gifts, you need to get going! I often start too late and end up either crocheting long hours and late night or having to go with a store-bought back up plan (or–and you’re welcome to use this idea– giving handmade gift cards for a handmade item… which then gives me the Christmas break to keep working!)
But you still have time to crochet before the gift giving season is upon us, so pick a pattern and get crocheting! Here are some of my crocheted Christmas gifts picks.

In our house, the gift giving starts with opening up a stocking. How about giving a stocking? I love this Brighton Christmas Stocking pattern by Cyprianne Nolan from Pretty Darn Adorable. It calls for a bulky yarn or two strands of worsted held together, so it would crochet up quickly and has lots of pictures to help guide you.
Is there a new baby you’re making for? Check out these adorable Mini Mukluk Booties! Designed with a beginner in mind, any crocheter will be able to make up these lovely slippers in three different sizes: 0-3 month, 3-6 months & 6-12 months. Such a fun little pattern!
Or, for an even more Christmassy pair of baby booties, you could choose these Christmas Baby Booties also at A Frayed Knot Boutique. I love the fuzzy yarn used at the top. Super sweet for a little girl to complete her Christmas outfit!
Ok, babies are only babies for so long and then they grow up and you still want to make them handmade gifts. Winter hats are a fantastic option, especially with all the amazing options out there. Check out this amazing geometric patterned Evie Crochet Beanie Pattern from rubywebbs‘ Etsy shop. (There are lots of other great patterns in that shop, which you should also check out.)
I was almost just going to leave you at that suggestion to go check out the Ruby Webbs Etsy shop for some more great patterns, but I just love The Stevie Crochet Beanie Pattern so much that I had to share it with you. It’s another great gift giving option and comes in 7 different sizes, so you’re sure to be able to make one for anyone on your list!
If you don’t know the hat size of your recipient, you can’t go wrong with a gorgeous cowl! The fringe and buttons add a great finish to this lovely June Berry Cowl from Wild Sapling.
There are many other crocheted gifts you can make besides wearable items, including this fun Vintage Camera Bag Crochet Pattern from The Artisan’s Nook. Sometimes teens can be so hard to buy for and even more difficult to make for, but I think this little camera purse pattern is perfect for a teen gift!
I also find that boys are sometimes hard to make for as well, but I think any little boy would be delighted to receive this Star Wars Yoda and R2D2 set. This is not the only Star Wars inspired amigurumi patterns that Los Sospechosos carries in their shop. There’s a pattern for just about every character in the original series, plus a couple others.
Maybe your recipient is ready to learn to crochet or would like to learn amigurumi. This little pug dog amigurumi kit is a perfect first amigurumi project and contains everything you need to make this adorable little stuffed animal! Or… buy it for yourself to make your first amigurumi and then give the little stuffy away!
If you’re making a gift for your coworkers or your boss, you should consider making them each one of these potted cactus plants from Planet June. You can get a set of eight realistic cactus plant patterns for under $20! June is an amigurumi master! She has so many great patterns: definitely worth checking out her shop!
Well that should get you started on making some lovely gifts for Christmas! Go get yourself a pattern and get started. You have no more time than you have right now! Go go go! And pin this so others can get kickstarted too!
Are you still in love with plaid? It was super hot last year, but I’m still totally into it! And a bunch of great pattern designers have come up with super inventive and gorgeous plaid crochet patterns for us to make! Check out these great pattern finds!

This Plaid About You beanie featuring a sweet plaid heart is a great handmade gift idea for anyone you love, though, I think it might be better suited to the ladies. (I don’t know what it is with dudes having a problem with wearing hearts.) I love it though. Super adorable.
I guess a more manly option would be this cool Oso Plaid Beanie in the same Etsy shop: Evelyn & Peter. The plaid bear pattern is so cool. And can you believe these are crocheted? They look so good. I love this style of plaid! And the designs in the midst of them? Genius!
While we’re still talking about this designer, we can’t forget one of my favorite designs: The Flannel Forrest Beanie. I’m still just blown away that these hats are crocheted! Have you made one of these gorgeous hats? If you do, let me know! They’re on my list to make. Again with the lovely fur pompoms… so super trendy and adorable. I had to buy myself a bunch last winter. You can get them here if you’re looking for some. Make sure you get the remove-able ones (mine have snaps!) so you can wash your toque (that’s Canadian for winter hat).
You certainly can’t go wrong with checking out the plaid patterns by Whistle & Ivy. They’re super affordable and super adorable, all at the same time! I made this pattern last year and I must say, her instructions are great and the hat looks fantastic, just like these pictures!
And, while I think plaid can definitely be worn year round, but especially in the fall and winter. there’s something about buffalo plaid that’s just a little bit Christmas-y. So, you have plenty of time to crochet up a couple of these adorable Chalet Rustic Pillow Covers to throw on your couch for the upcoming winter season! The deer pattern is just impeccable! What a fun and festive idea!
Grab some supplies!
Pick up one of these great patterns and get crocheting today or pin it for later!
With the weather turning cooler and Halloween decorations beginning to show up in stores, I’ve been thinking about making fun hats for the kids, that also double as costumes. Where I live, it could easily be snowing or freezing on Halloween so incorporating a warm knit or crocheted hat into your costume is a smart move.

This simple and adorable Lael Viking Hat crochet pattern looks like it would work up quickly for a last minute costume idea. It comes in all sizes, so it would be great to make for matching family costumes. You could easily crochet one up in a couple of hours, I think. Also, how cute is that kid?
If monsters are more your jam for Halloween, this fun crochet pattern for Bronster and Missy Monster looks like an easy costume to throw together. You could pretty much just wear jeans and a t-shirt, throw this hat on and boom! you’ve got a costume! Simple for the person in your life who doesn’t want to put a lot of extra thought into a costume (I mean, someone’s got to make it, but…)
If you’re looking for a more involved and impressive hat costume, there’s this wild Krampus Hat crochet pattern. Perfect if you’re looking for something for a Where the Wild Things Are costume. Isn’t is amazing? What a fantastic-looking hat!
Of course, there are still a lot of kids who want to dress up as their favorite characters from movies and tv shows and Minions from Despicable Me remains very popular still. Check out this simple, yet sweet little minion hat that would get any kid to wear a hat to school on a cold winter day! Maybe then my kids would stop losing them!
If you’re a knitter and not a crocheter, then there are even some adorable costume hats that you can make. This Kitten Hat Knitting Pattern is much more subtle than some of the other patterns, so it could easily be worn well past the Halloween season, but would also make another super simple last minute costume, if needed.
Foxes are super popular right now, too and this little Foxy & Wolfie Hat Knitting Pattern comes in three sizes: toddler, child and adult, so you could knit a whole family of foxy hats!
The great thing about babies is you can dress them as silly as you like and they always look adorable! This sweet Puppy Dog Crochet Hat Pattern would make a seriously adorable photo prop as shown here or a super simple and warm costume accessory for Halloween.
Which adorable costume hat will you make for yourself or a loved one? One time I made this super sweet Larry Boy crocheted hat for my son. Of course, my kids never give me much time when they decide what they want to be for Halloween, so I was pretty sure I was madly crocheting this hat at the last minute. Turned out pretty good. I didn’t have a pattern then and I don’t have one now, but maybe if enough requests come in, then perhaps I will sit down and try to write one up.

I know it’s not quite winter hat weather right now. In fact, it was such a long winter that I’m not sure I want to see another toque (that’s Canadian for winter beanie) again! But I couldn’t help but post about this after I stumbled upon this lovely pattern the other day.

Can you believe this is a crochet pattern? I love it! I definitely need to spend some more time crocheting next fall and this one tops my list for lovely colour-work projects for winter!
You can get the pattern for this “The Tegan Beanie” for only $3.33 CAD (today, anyway; the currency-conversion is always shifting, but suffice it to say it’s a reasonably priced pattern!) from Fiber and Fern Designs.
Winter has descended on Alberta, so all of a sudden I feel like it’s time to crochet! I’ve rounded up some of my favourite crochet hat patterns and most of them are FREE!
This hat is another favourite. It’s for sale on Etsy by PrettyDarnAdorable and I must agree… it’s pretty darn adorable.
This slouchy LL Bean Copy Cat crochet pattern by Meg Made With Love is also on my list of hats to make. I think my daughter needs a new slouchy hat and this just might be her thing.
Back to slouchy hat patterns. This classy pattern by Croyden Crochet is simple yet stylish. It just occurred to me that this is the only pattern in my list without a pompom. Pompoms are great, though. I love pompoms. Did you know there are pompom makers? They’re the greatest things! There are all sorts of fun ways to make pompoms without a special tool, but these make it seriously so easy and fun. I have 4 different sizes and I love them!
